    The NFL needs to have a Cy Young award... just like pitchers in baseball, there should be an award for best QB of the year, separate but almost equivalent to MVP/best position player of the year.
    The NFL desperately needs to acknowledge that QBs are just a totally different breed/league from any position player. The only fun the MVP has had in the last 20 years has been " _which_ QB will get it?" And if a non QB position player gets MVP, it downright almost feels disingenuous because QBs are the backbone of NFL teams, love it or hate it.

      Except, pitchers can win both the Cy Young and the MVP in the same season. It's been done many times, two semi-recent examples being Clayton Kershaw in 2014 and Justin Verlander in 2012. In fact, the existence and prestige of the Cy Young has, at times, been used to rob deserving pitchers of the MVP award. In 1999 Pedro Martinez was the obvious MVP, but a few voters completely left him off their ballot because he was a pitcher and he was just supposed to settle for the Cy Young, so he came in second in MVP despite more first place votes. The Cy Young award and Hank Aaron award in MLB are already equivalents to the Offensive and Defensive players of the year in the NFL. In all of those cases, a player can win one of those awards and then also MVP. If you want to compare to another, the NHL with its wide variety of different awards would be a better template to emulate for the NFL. They've got specific awards for several positions as well as for statistical leaders in different categories.

In a single game against Detroit, he Blocked a field goal, scored a safety, caused a fumble that he then recovered and flipped to J. Earl Campbell was another case that had a shortened career and got in without a Super Bowl, but the stuff he did the first 3 years of his career was so insane. He gained 5000 yards rushing in those 3 years, even Jim Brown or Walter Payton didn't do that, partially because he was the entire Oilers offense at the time. So you need to have been a major contributor to a Super Bowl and/or historically dominant to get in off a shortened career. His 2003 season saw him throw 29 touchdowns which somehow is more impressive than Holmes' 27 rushing touchdown. Then there was Kurt Warner who put up better numbers in 2008 with a team who basically never tasted success before him, and in 2009, both Drew Brees and Brett Farve arguably had better overall seasons than Peyton. As good as Peyton was, only 2 of his MVPs were 100% deserved while the other 3 are easily questionable

    In my opinion, the 70s was the greatest era in NFL history and the RB was one of, if not THE, most important position in the game and oh how I miss those days of hard-hitting, super competitive smashmouth football!
    The early to mid-90s was a great period as well but since then I think the game has just been much like the NBA, yeah, far too easy to score and put up massive offensive stats as the defenses literally are handcuffed. This makes the stats and players from yesteryear suffer.
    If you have a solid O-line and a damn good defense and a great running back that is all you really need, so long as you run the ball consistently in the first half regardless of success.
    By doing this you are using the clock, keeping your defense fresh and bringing the opponents DB's and LB's one step closer to the line and that will set up the play action pass and you can do that with just an average QB and WR corp.
    If you think that smashmouth is boring, go watch some of the full-length games from 1977 (seem to be quite a few from that season on here and with good copies) and tell me that isn't great football that is as good as it gets.

    I'm not from the U.S. but I'vee been a football fan since I was a kid and I'm 40+... What strikes me the most is how many unsung heroes plays and played the NFL. The big guys especially seem to receive the worst treatment. To the QB and goal-line breakers the glory, but even über-talented QBs and pass catchers are nothing without the wall of toughness that is the foundation of every play. Even recent examples have shown us how HoF caliber QBs can get overwhelmed without good protection...

    • @blue_rapier
      @blue_rapier Рік тому +2

      yeah its very disappointing since we have loads of examples of decent or even outright bad QBs making it to superbowls thanks to great lines, recently the 2017 Eagles with Wentz and Foles come to mind, they had 3 all pros on the line in Kelce, Brooks, and Peters, Kelce being a lock for Canton and Peters probably has a pretty good shot himself
      the issue is that quantifying a lineman's value is really hard, same goes for great linebackers and corners for that matter but its by far the worst for offensive linemen

    • @TheJusticefornone
      @TheJusticefornone 10 місяців тому

      Exactly. I think issuing the current MVP award should now be done as follows; have a Most Valuable Quarterback Award (MVQB), as well as have a Most Valuable Player award (MVP) that would subsequently be issued to only positions that are not quarterbacks. This would make other positions a lot more competitive for the award, as this would eliminate a quarterbacks natural advantage because of the positions perception

    Sorry, NFL traditionalist, but sometimes greatness must be recognized as being downright GREAT. So, if someone on defense(as WaTT was in 2014) has an all-time, uniquely dominant season. Besides getting the Defensive Player of the Year award. The dude should definitely get the outright NFL MVP award for his play. Especially in a year where no QB or RB had an unmatched statistical year... Even the old farts who decide the MLB awards will recognize those crazy unique years when a pitcher has a generationally great season, and thus, they will give him both the Cy Young and the MVP award. NFL should take a page outta their book.🎉

Without Taylor, the Colts would win very few games -- as you saw this season. Kupp got more attention because he played for a better team in a much bigger market. But Taylor was the best.
