Rheem RHWSC Softener Cleaner
2/16/2024
I bought this water softener a four months ago to replace my Sears Kenmore softener that finally died after 20+ years.
This video does not show you how to install, repair or operate the softener. It just covers resetting the “CLEAN” reminder, and how to add the cleaner solution.
There will be a “CLEAN” reminder every 4 months.
You don’t have to “clean” your softener, but it does extend your Rheem warranty to 5 years. Scan the bar code on the bottle and follow the instructions.
I probably won’t clean mine but a few times. Other than a few maintenance “repairs”, I used 2 Sears softeners over 35? years.

YAY A NEW VIDEO! THANKS ROB
Thanks Rob great video! Very nicely done ✅🇺🇸
Thanks for the video! I needed this
I'm so glad it helped!
Thank you Rob!
Thank you for this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you
Thank you for the instructions on the video, however, I wonder did you ever do an update to let us know if it made any difference? We are in a new house with a new water softener, but at the other house, we never cleaned it and it never required cleaning. I can’t imagine what the difference would be? Thanks and let us know please
I feel the same as you. I'm not sure what cleaning really does and if it's really needed.
In my area I use the salt crystals in the same unit. I have been using this cleaner every 4 months since I got in April of 2023. Here is my issue the inside of the tank that holds the salt, it appears to have black stuff on the walls, it does not smell but the water that comes out of the sink smells very musty. Page 13 talks about the Bypass Blending Valve. Also I have seen some talk about adding bleach. I am a bit overwhelmed and do not want to break anything. So any help to get rid of the musty mildew smell would be great. I already reached out to my water company and they claim its not on there end.
Thank you for explaining clean
Thanx brother.
Thanks. This came in a clutch
good for you!
Thank you very much!!!
And Thank You!
Thank you Sir!
...and thank you! Glad to help.
Thanks for the video, I was thinking of buying this same unit. I have a question ...We live in a house with a septic system so there isnt a drain in the floor in our basement.
I was wondering if the drain system for the softener is pressurized or not or does it just flow. I'm asking because I need to run a water line across the basement through the rafters to the laundry sink.
Also does the 32 meet your needs?
The 32 is plenty for my house of 2 people and 45 hardness. The HomeDepot website says it is recommended for 3-4 people.
The owners manual is available at:
images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/31/31be086f-8bcb-4fc5-a3c8-bce902d61e1d.pdf
On page 7 it states the the drain line should not be more than 30ft, nor elevated more than 8ft above the floor. So, apparently it is pressurized (or pumped).
Hi again, thanks for responding and answering my questions.....I promise I only have one more.
The brine overflow hose, says it's gravity flow ...this also has to go to a drain, how often and what would cause this to drain? . Is it a daily occurrence? Does it happen on regeneration cycles? Or is this for an emergency over flow that could possibly fun to a pan or small bucket?
Thanks again
@@andrewduffett9363 The overflow is gravity. It's just a hole with hose at the top of the tank. It is emergency only. I've only had the tank (hose) overflow one time in 40 years, when the valve got stuck on the softener. If you do have an overflow, it will probably keep running until you shut off the water, and fix the softener.
I've only lived in few different houses, and they all had a sump pump. It seems strange that you have a basement with no sump pump.
@@robertveldman1901 I do have a sump pump. But it's way at the other end on the house.
This house was originally on a well and a septic bed system. But now the house is still on septic bed system but has a town water supply instead of my drilled well.
All houses that I know that have the septic systems don't have drains in the basement floors. There has to a lift system of some sort to get the water out of basement. Even my laundry tub and washing machine have to go through a lift pump to get discharged into the septic system.
I do have a sump pump in case of a basement flood....but it is about 50 feet away from where I have to install the softener.
Just a bit of a pain with this older country property set up.
Did you install the softener yourself? I'm just wondering......I have a 3/4 water line coming into my house. Then it steps down to 1/2 inch and my entire house is 1/2 inch from that point. I have the option of installing the softener piped inline of the 3/4 feed. I can also install it on the 1/2 inch side before it feeds the house lines.
Do you think the flow/ pressure would be the same at my taps regardless of where I install it. Or do you think installing in the 3/4 pipe was have less chance of losing pressure/flow?
Is my Rheem RHS32 do a regeneration cycle every week or after a certain number of gallons used. Thank you.
It regens based on the number of gallons; based on what you set the hardness value at. The higher the hardness number, the more frequent the regens.
@robertveldman1901 Thanks. Last week l changed the salt to pellets then 2 days later did a Rheem cleaner, because of how dirty the crystals were in the tank, washed everything inside down with bleach water than just water. So l guess those two cleaning cycles changes the time. My setting is at 40. The water still feels a bit sticky, and once in a while there is a slight smell but it goes away letting the faucet run a little bit. I am hoping the next regeneration will clear things up even more and make the water even softer.
Do you need to pull out the service handle when doing this?
No. Don't pull the service/bypass handle.
@ No wonder because I did pulled it and it absolutely flooded with water while recharging. Good to know thanks
My softener keeps overflowing. I’m getting suction from the Venturi and my unit does drain. Any ideas?
I really got nothing. Unfortunately, I'm not a repair guy.
Did you check if the float moves freely?
Hello, thank you for this video. I am running my first cleaning & recharge. I notice the salt tank is filling slowly with water. Did you experience this also? Is it normal? Thank you
Yes, I think so. That's what the recharge cycle does.
This works with hot or cold weather
The water softener only gets cold water. The water heater is further "downstream"
@ I got it thanks a lot for ur help really appreciate appreciated
Cleaning is good for people with excessive minerals in the water that don’t come out with the salt rinse. IE iron, the cleaner is an acid that will clean the resin beads. If it’s not needed it will actually slowly dissolve the resin beads. If you’re on a well and get iron even with the softener running you’re going to want to use cleaner often. For most people on municipal water it is completely unnecessary.
Thanks. That kinda makes sense. I did it that one time. Not planning to do it again.
Should I run my sinks etc after the recharge is complete?
It shouldn't be necessary to flush out your lines after a recharge. I never have.
@robertveldman1901 I went ahead and did it for 6-7 minutes. This stuff is acid, and I'm terrified of harsh chemicals.
But thank you for your reply 👍🏻
@@amandamarkisen2120 I'm not an expert; just a guy with a water softener.
The Rheem cleaner does contain the weak acid; phosphoric acid, which is also used in soda. I'm pretty sure that most of it is flushed out during the recharge cycle. Pretty sure.
It certainly can't hurt to flush your lines, but you'll probably want to run the cold water for the flush. Don't forget that you have a 40-50 gallon water heater. Of course that much hot water would also further dilute any acid.
Rheem extends the warranty if you do the clean cycle as directed.
That is true. I should have mentioned that.
PUSH A BUTTON DID NOT WORK, ADD THE CLEANER, COMPUTER STUCK ON FLASHING CLEAN
The instructions are pretty clear to press any button to clear the "Clean" message.
If the message doesn't clear, try unplugging the power and restarting it. Then run the "recharge now", since you poured in the cleaner.
If that doesn't work, try calling Rheem for help.
