Black & Decker 20v Battery - Rebuild / Replace 2 cells
Black & Decker 6ah Battery (fake) - rebuild/replace two cells
10/30/2024
In this video, I replaced two cells in my fake Black and Decker 6ah battery.
The battery pack contains 10) 18650 batteries.
I bought 4) batteries, charger, and the welder for about $40 delivered.
This will give me a couple spare batteries for the next one.
Note that on my fake, cheap, “get what you pay for” batteries, they say 20v “max”.
They are labeled as 3.6v, which means their nominal voltage is only 5x3.6=18.0v.
The old batterie cells are just over 3 years old.
I use two of these batteries to run each of my “12v” Dune Racer electric kid cars. That gives me a run time of 45? minutes. Those Dune Racers run awesome!
This is my second battery pack to go bad. I recycled the first. Those spot welds were too intimidating to me… Until I saw a video with this spot welder. It looked so easy, and it was relatively cheap.
The welder instructions are pretty decent, but I don’t understand most of the settings. But it worked very well right out of the box. I used “gear” setting 7. The provided nickel strips are about 0.1mm thick.
According to the Ali web listing:
This spot welding machine has 11 adjustable output powers that can be adjusted according to the different materials you spot weld.
1-3 gear mobile phone battery,
3-6 gear 0.1mm nickel plate,
6-11 gear 0.12-0.15 nickel plate.
One charge can spot weld more than 200 times.

    So my van has had the auxiliary battery changed when I first got my Pacifica. The mechanics had said the stop/start had been caused by the bad battery. I just got my second new main battery put in in less than two years. A month or so ago my stop/start went again and since I don't like it I haven't worried about it (I drive a lot and put a lot of miles on) but now I'm confused and pretty pissed at the shop that charged me $600 for the parts and labor at the shop I took it to. So my aux battery seems fine other than that and I prefer the stop/start not working, can it be disabled permanently? Anyway I was just reading how the auxiliary battery has nothing to do with the stop/start.

      @robertveldman1901 2 дні тому

      While I'm not an trained expert, I've heard that disconnecting the aux battery will disable the stop/start. If the aux battery is bad, I read that you should disconnect it to avoid it draining the main battery.

    how often do we have to change the salt?

    • @robertveldman1901
      @robertveldman1901 4 дні тому

      You don't actually change the salt, you keep adding to it. The salt is used to flush/recharge the resin beads. Then the salt is flushed out the drain. How often you add salt is dependent on the hardness setting, the hardness of your water, and how much water you use. The resin beads usually last the life of the softener.

    I have a 2019 too. The guy who I took my truck to did a complete electrical check and said my battery was getting low, though it always started fine. Today, I went to the dealer and was going to get a new battery along with having a recall dealt with. He said the battery install costs $59. I was shocked. I thought they would put it for free or for $5. They are making money from the battery anyway. So, I will either do it myself, following this procedure, or go somewhere they install them for you, such as Autozone. What a rip for a battery install, By the way, to put the computer on it and check for problems, they chage $209. The repair shop I take my truck to does hat for free!

    • @robertveldman1901
      @robertveldman1901 12 днів тому

      The dealers are such rip-offs. Cars are getting so complex, that you don't have a choice in many cases. Any many times, they can't figure it out. But I avoid dealers at all costs. My rule for electrical issues is to replace the battery first. A battery is a lot cheaper than the dealer diagnostics fee from the dealer; $200-500. And many times, the battery solves the problem

    Curious why it’s a Battery Monitor System when the actual truck has no method to monitor the battery. There is no instrument panel gauge or software imbedded on the display screen to actually see the state of the battery voltage or state of input voltage from the alternator.

    • @robertveldman1901

      After looking at the information and disinformation out there, I believe the BMS monitors the battery and charging system volts and amps for the main purpose of a slight improvement in fuel mileage; via the ECM. It has a direct function on the auto stop/start; unplugging the BMS will disable it. Apparently, it is part of the system to control (reduce) the charging voltage. The higher the charging voltage, the more drag on engine, and reduced hp and fuel economy. (Not that we would notice). So, you are correct; the BMS doesn't share info with us on what it is doing.

    • @robertveldman1901
      @robertveldman1901 24 дні тому

      I never gave it any thought. I would guess the restriction of the water softener is insignificant. I'm on a well and have a well tank. The water pressure will normally vary several psi during normal operation of the well and the tank. That being said, pretty much any device in the water flow (including pipe and fittings) will affect water flow and pressure.

    Okay this is where I am at. I cleaned out the tank where the salt goes I used bleach water and did this 3 times. Then I added the salt pellets and then did a regeneration cycle. The water still had a light musty smell. Rheem said to re-run the cycle but with 3 ozs of bleach. It helped a little so know in the morning I have to let the faucet run for 20 to 30 seconds till there is no smell. I let them know that. They got back to me and said there may still be some bacteria in the resin beads part of the tank and to run a regeneration cycle again add 3oz of bleach but this time to unplug the softener use the bypass valve when all the water from where the salt is in the resin tank let it sit for 20 minutes, this should kill whatever bacteria is still there??? What they did not tell me how long I have to wait for the water to be in the resin tank, I have the RHS32. Do You know how long??? Any help would be appreciated.

You will need to set-up the % on the new gage. Check the instructions. I would recommend using "Method 2: After fully charging the battery, press the '%' button to display the percentage (probably 0%). Then hold the '%' button down for 3 seconds to set the full capacity to display 100%". You can also search UA-cam for videos on setting up the gage.

Walmart just warranted it and gave me a new one so I am covered for another 2 years. the Pacifica doesn't get driven much these days so that's probably contributing to the dead battery.

    • @robertveldman1901
      @robertveldman1901 Місяць тому

      There's a couple things about K&N filters... I've actually had two of them on two cars. So, based on my limited experience and some research: One: They can increase the air flow and horsepower, but I believe they do do this by sacrificing filtration; the allow more "dirty" air thru. Two: The K&N filter depends on oil to trap the dirt. It can be difficult to control the amount of oil you apply. And the worst thing is the oil gets vaporized and will deposit the oil on your MAF sensor. The MAF sensor has a built-in heater, and the heat bakes the oil onto the sensor, and causes the sensor to malfunction; car idles and runs terrible. (And no check engine light!) The good news is the sensor can be cleaned with MAF cleaner, once you find the sensor. Both my cars were fixed with MAF cleaner. That being said, go ahead and use the K&N filter, but be aware of the risks; more dirty air and dirty MAF sensor.

      @@amandamarkisen2120 I'm not an expert; just a guy with a water softener. The Rheem cleaner does contain the weak acid; phosphoric acid, which is also used in soda. I'm pretty sure that most of it is flushed out during the recharge cycle. Pretty sure. It certainly can't hurt to flush your lines, but you'll probably want to run the cold water for the flush. Don't forget that you have a 40-50 gallon water heater. Of course that much hot water would also further dilute any acid.

    Thanks for your review Rob! I was apart of the Industrial Design team that worked on this. (I did the design for the battery box, handles and triggers.) It was definitely a challenge to design since things had to be changed for the lower price point. But our goals were to make it easier to manufacture and more intuitive and comfortable to use. Hope you liked it!

    I do agree with repairing a stock battery from Milwaukee, DeWalt, Craftsman and Ryobi. However, those packs will have an actual BMS to protect every cell and to balance them out. The pack you have repaired does not have a bms and that makes that pack an extreme fire hazard. That's why there are so many battery fires! Packs from Amazon are fakes and rarely even have a bms. There is a girl on youtube forgot her name, but she was given several Makida batteries and found one that was in the process of thermal runaway and threw it outside where it eventual bursted into flames!

      Thank you for your well intended warnings. Lithium based batteries are potentially very dangerous, especially when over-heated, over-charged, over-discharged. or physically damaged. They certainly scare me. I cannot answer for whether any of my batteries have a "real" BMS. And there have also been name-brand batteries that have been recalled.

      Good idea! I'm not sure what the true function of the BMS is. Supposedly, you need to reset it, because you changed the battery? Personally, I'd be tempted to just change the battery and let the BMS relearn the new battery. Has anyone tried that?

  • @unclejohn5012
    @unclejohn5012 Місяць тому

    Hey mate, couple things to note. When you replace individual cells you want to match the capacity to the old cells. Ideally you would want to replace every cell so they are closely matched, voltages of every cell need the be matched in the pack as well. Having 2 cells higher capacity then the rest will cause balance issues within just a couple charge cycles and may kill the rest of the pack in a short periods of time. I did notice your cells are already badley balanced when you assembled the pack so unfortunately there's already a issue. As for spot welding, the nickel strip on the battery has a slit in it, you ideally want to have this slit inbetween your probes as it allowes the current to flow through the battery cap and not just across the top of the nickel. I do apologise for stamping down your success but unfortunately your method is unsafe but I do understand that we go into things sometimes with not enough knowledge and don't know it! One other note, your charger, get a proper charger, you should not have been seeing more then 4.2V when you checked it with your Multimeter, very concerning. If you want any suggestions on brands etc feel free to ask! Otherwise great video :)

    • @robertveldman1901
      @robertveldman1901 Місяць тому

      Thank you for your polite and sensible criticism. I was fairly aware of the balance concerns on the batteries. I have a similar concern on my Ryobi mower batteries. Slitting the strips makes a lot of sense. I should have figured that out when seeing the slits in the existing "strips".
