Had this issue when I first started in the credit game. Had over 15 cards 🤦🏾♂️ but that was over 10 years ago and I’ve since got it down to 3 cards that suit my lifestyle
Quick note, Capital One does not limit you to two cards. That only applies to their sub-prime cards. I had a QuickSilver and Venture for many years and applied for a SavorOne this year with no issue.
Great concept to go over how you’d start over. However, I can confirm it is possible to have 3 personal active cap 1 cards (as pointless as one of them is) as I have a Vx, S1 , and quicksilver
🐘 Finished my gardening from Chase 5/24 and last few months was approved for Marriott Boundless and Aeroplan card. Kind of regret not jumping on Venture X when the card came out, but was super focused on getting back on the Chase bus. Now hearing about how strict Capital One is makes me hesitant if i should apply and also use those 5/24 slots. Anyway thank you for the content Sebby!
🐘 the one thing I have learned is that hotel cards tend to be more powerful than airline cards. It also pays to have good relationships with Chase, Amex and Citi regardless of bonus hunting.

🐘 Hey Sebby, Allen here. Personally, after Chase, due to 6/24 (and I used AA miles to book that first class trip to Japan), I would focus on Barclays before Capital One. If one has gotten Ink cards and eligible for business cards, I'd do Barclays Aviator Business (to stay at 6/24), then the Barclays Aviator Red. Afterwards, it would be a free-for-all. I would also mix in the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select to go along with the personal version to beef up on those powerful AA miles. Fortunately I don't regret skipping out on any credit issuer (particularly U.S. Bank) because those rewards don't benefit me. Once I get back under 5/24, I'd go for the Chase Aeroplan card since those miles can be powerful for travel to Asia as well.
I would have kept my Citi Card that I opened in May 2000, just kept it open and not let it cancel due to inactivity. It was closed with 100% good standing in 2015. Its my one of my only regrets.
Sitting on 20 personal cards, 4 business cards, and almost $7,000 in annual fees - I'm a happy camper. Was able to apply for eighteen of these cards in the last 18 months picking up a lot of all-time high signup bonuses. Last two years has been a lot of luxury international trips for little to no money.
Hey Sebby! Just wanted to leave a quick data point for your point about the two personal card limit for Capital One (9:30). I got the Capital One Journey student card (later product-changed to Quicksilver) in Fall 2020, the Venture X in Fall 2022, and the SavorOne Student in Summer 2023.
🐘 I love this video! I did Flex, CSP and AmEx Plat (welcome bonus was too good). Player 2 did another Flex and Amazon. Working well...but Plat may not be a keeper...
🐘 Luckily I got started with the Chase Trifecta (after PCing my Chase Freedom Student to the OG Chase Freedom) but right after that, I moved out of Chase for a while. If I could do it again, I'd go for even more Chase cards off the bat to maximize my 5/24 status. This is a solid blueprint for sure!!
🐘 love the set up strategy. Definitely gonna get my player 2 started soon on her CC journey. Any particular reason you opted for the Chase IHG Premier over Chase Bonvoy Boundless? Thanks!

🐘hey sebby, why do we get the student card and then turn it into a savor-one? Was it because savor-one is hard to get or because the student has some better welcome bonus or avoids a one time fee? Everything else was clear in the video!

Sapphire data point - I was an authorized user on an account which received the SUB 4+ years ago. I applied for the CSP in May - denied because I “already received the bonus”. Called chase support for an hour. Supervisor told me - because I was an AU , I was not eligible for the sapphire bonus - the 48mo counter for another bonus is from account/card close NOT from when bonus was received Overall a very surprising and frustrating data point. I kinda went about it completely wrong and now I am gardening at 6/24 until next year. And in pop up jail. I feel the discover it is also a great option. And like most people also in pop up jail. All I am really missing at this point is the freedom unlimited or the business version of it.
Last? 🐘. Sebby I have 8 consumer and 4 business. At the beginning it was torture when Applying, so I stopped Applying for Barclay's . Then I discovered your channel And Applying was like riding a slide. (NO Barclay cards) I Thank you.....
We have an ancient Amex Skymiles with 150k miles and 2 other old cards with minimal points. I am considering starting with the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business card for the 120k bonus (spend $15k within 9 months). I'd time it to reach the $15k spend in January, so then I'd have at least 135k RR points (120k+15k) to qualify for a SW Companion Pass that would be good for two full years. After that, I'll go for the Sapphire Reserve or Venture X for the travel perks.
🐘 I've noticed no American Express account in the early stages. What route would you recommend for American Express (personal and business) if playing the long game? Most interested in amassing a lot of MR points for a redemption in 2024 or 2025. Overall goal would be to maximize international travel redemption.
You talked about product changing the Chase Student to a Flex or Unlimited. I currently only have the Student and am coming up one one year. Should I product change to one of the two (flex or unlimited) and then apply for the other one? I lose out on one sign up bonus but I keep my status at 2/24 rather than 3/24. Thoughts?
I think the Chase 5/24 is a soft rule, because I was at exactly 5/24 with 4 months before falling below it, and got a business card without issue. I also have a decent holding with them though, so maybe that’s influencing it some?
I am 4/24 with no chase cards. Looking for a travel card , I have one half of the Cap1 duo but leaning toward either VX or the CSP/ CSR..... really the CSR. Are the chase travel cards still pretty effective without the other two cards ? I have one trip overseas and 3 trips domestically in the next 6 months. Thanks.
CSP vs. CSR calculator: www.asksebby.com/credit-card-reviews/csp-vs-csr I would do CSP/CSR first and then finish off C1 Duo. The Freedom are "nice to have" but the CSP/CSR is still the meat.
Just depends on where you travel my friend and what hotel brands are there. I live in San Diego and I have all 3. I try to stay at Hyatt hotels but my second option is Marriott then ihg. Ihg is easier to use in terms of booking stays with points and with Marriott, you will end up having to use more points for stays.
hey! @8:31 you talked about stacking hotel nights, free anniversary nights expire after 12 months, so are you talking about getting 1 IHG and 1 bonvoy card and staying at 2 hotels? Or what exactly are you talking about? Thanks!
@asksebby my Hyatt business card shows up in my personal credit report. Did I do something wrong when filling the application? I was sure to fill in TIN rather than SSN unless forced to. What do you think happened? Or should I ignore that it's even there? The card put me at 5/24. Thanks!
Idk man I called chase and they said as soon as I pay off my closed slate I would be immediately eligible even with my 7 cards opened . Since I had a card previously
🐘Currently have the Venture X and Apple Card and 2 older cap1 starter cards. Since I’m at 2/24 I’ve got room to play sitting on 90k offer for Amex gold but I just don’t know where to go from here. I have side a business but the minimum spends are so high I just don’t think I can justify it
@AskSebby I got to the airport and discovered that my itinerary had been canceled. I had to reroute. I almost got rebooked on the same itinerary but their was no response from the travel company Capital uses.
🐘 Im at 2/24. I started with CapitalOne Platinum(Oct 2020), my 2nd is Chase Freedom Unlimited (Oct 2022)with 50k+ points earned. Today I'm pre-approved for both CSP and CSR (both with 60k bounus offerd), but being suggested CSP and CIU. I could choose CSR than downgrade to a CFFlex (If needed), or go CSP to CSR and then CIU. ???
It doesn't matter how you spend your money, it doesn't have to be business. Some people even use the card just to buy gift card ( say amazon gift or apple gift card,...) to hit the spend requirement
Low priority given the meta/rules in play. You can easily get it in the late game. Put another way, if you have 20 cards, Bilt will still happily approve you. Same with Amex. Not necessarily the case for Chase/Citi/BofA/etc. Almost impossible for C1.
Doesn't make sense for first 5 (5/24 and opportunity cost there) Neither does it for C1 and long-term opp cost. Maybe in place of Citi / Barclays / US Bank / BofA? Even then, I'd rather grab the Citi Premier first and lock in the intro bonus of 60k TY (worst case - we've seen it at 80k in the past). Even with Bay Area / NYC rent of let's say $5k/month, that's 12 months before you get the same value as the Citi Premier at 60k TY.
wait the way you always talked about it before i thought 5/24 was inquires not cards? so i can just apply for chase cards when ever? i dont apply for credit cards that often but my inquiries i though were always too high lol and by inquires i mean hard pulls
🐘ahhhhh, youtube mobile didn't send the words, have to edit. so i got the saphire preferred as my first serious card (i got the amazon prime card a month before) and it's been about 10 months since then. i'd like to get the reserve for the priority pass and travel benefits, but want to know how to still get the intro bonus. can i upgrade the preferred to the reserve and get it? or do i need to completely cancel the card, wait out the remainder of the 48 months from whenever i cancel, and the re-apply for the reserve?
The 48 month clock starts when you get your bonus not when you cancel. You have to have the card for one year before you can product change to the reserve and you will not receive a bonus.
Answered but will reiterate: 1) No bonus for upgrading 2) Wait 48 months from CSP bonus to get CSR (via a fresh new card application) if you want the bonus
Definitely jumped too quickly into the 🐘, brushing past Chase too quickly in the process... 🙃 I don't really know what my ideal setup is to be honest... I don't really get much time to travel in reality, and have some brand loyalty for honestly not too many good reasons (Alaska, Marriott). Grandfathered into the old AS BofA with no minimum spend for companion fare. I feel like I know about all these sweet spots and strategies, but would never act on them due to time and loyalty... I *could* spend MR/UR/whatnot, but then that one less non-award flight could make me loose status... do I care about that...? Tradeoffs... 😣
Wow that was a great video once again, that one is a great view for someone who is just starting out definitely. I will look at your video a few more times so I can set my kid up, they r authorized on 2 of my NFCU No annual fee card but I want them to get their own since they r off to college I will look at the first card you suggested. How about Amex Blue prfd.? Groceries 6% which is exceptional, Gas 3%, better than most. And for those who don’t travel much it is better than most you listed. Also for those of us who live rural Amazon Prime with 5% back on purchases. Obviously, no Whole Foods in rural areas but we get an average of two or three item each week from Amazon and there is no delivery cost. Both of these cards have an annual fee but the fee is negligible compared to the rewards and benefits.
@@WhatsThePoints1 for several years, I had Amex Platinum which for a small business owner was a superior card. Also had Chase Ink which was equally as good. Now being retired, the Amex Blue Prfd is my only Amex card. Hope your situation with Amex changes soon.

@@mattleathen445 same… super frustrating. Just don’t want to call support for another hour to figure it out lol
Then I discovered your channel
And Applying was like riding a slide.
(NO Barclay cards) I Thank you.....
Glad the content was helpful! :)
🐘 for me, it worked out that I did it in a similar fashion. I was in LOL/24 for a while too though
Are you applying to any new cards?
I hv VentureX & CapOne Miles card w/$39per year for 2PPC (my first credit card). Should I downgrade the Miles card to no annual fee?
Yeah, I have so many credit cards… but the ones I still have do provide value…
Had over 15 cards 🤦🏾♂ but that was over 10 years ago and I’ve since got it down to 3 cards that suit my lifestyle
🐘 I've noticed no American Express account in the early stages. What route would you recommend for American Express (personal and business) if playing the long game? Most interested in amassing a lot of MR points for a redemption in 2024 or 2025. Overall goal would be to maximize international travel redemption.
There's not really a route for Amex. Mainly the "once in a lifetime" rule, so the strategy is to apply for cards when there's an elevated offer.
🐘 Do you have this visually plotted on a timeline on your website? That would be helpful!
Im pretty content with my current collection of 21 cards. Only thing I would do differently is add a hotel card sooner
Thanks.
CSP vs. CSR calculator: www.asksebby.com/credit-card-reviews/csp-vs-csr
I would do CSP/CSR first and then finish off C1 Duo. The Freedom are "nice to have" but the CSP/CSR is still the meat.
@@AskSebby , that calculator tool is🔥🔥.
I’m not so sure about 50% rule..just got Chase Amazon card with only $500 balance other card is $6700…..
What would you prefer for a hotel keeper card? I have the WOH already and looking for another hotel card, would recommend the boundless or IHG ?
Just depends on where you travel my friend and what hotel brands are there. I live in San Diego and I have all 3. I try to stay at Hyatt hotels but my second option is Marriott then ihg. Ihg is easier to use in terms of booking stays with points and with Marriott, you will end up having to use more points for stays.
🐘 could I pay for college tuition with Ink Business Unlimited to meet SUB, or would that be against the business card policy?
hey! @8:31 you talked about stacking hotel nights, free anniversary nights expire after 12 months, so are you talking about getting 1 IHG and 1 bonvoy card and staying at 2 hotels? Or what exactly are you talking about?
Thanks!
Are you still not able to talk about Discover cards?
does the 5/24 rule count if you call them and you have history with Chase?
It still does. Only way to get around the 5/24 is if you are a high investor/customer of Chase like have their Chase Sapphire Savings accounts.
Thanks!
Appreciate you! :)
@asksebby my Hyatt business card shows up in my personal credit report. Did I do something wrong when filling the application? I was sure to fill in TIN rather than SSN unless forced to. What do you think happened? Or should I ignore that it's even there? The card put me at 5/24. Thanks!
Sorry if you covered this, but how are you getting the JAL tickets? I am closing in on 110,000 Alaska points from two bonuses.

@@AskSebby thank you!! See you there!!
Bilt would have to be the first card you get after 5/24, especially if you pay rent.
I have side a business but the minimum spends are so high I just don’t think I can justify it
I did the Capital One deal but their travel service department completely dropped the ball. Fixing it cost hundreds. No thank you.
Dang. What happened? Sorry to hear that :(
@AskSebby I got to the airport and discovered that my itinerary had been canceled.
Do each every 6 months
How is someone going to meet the spend requirement on a business card if they teach piano lessons?
It doesn't matter how you spend your money, it doesn't have to be business. Some people even use the card just to buy gift card ( say amazon gift or apple gift card,...) to hit the spend requirement
@@Hinata-EN Sure, but thats a violation of terms and conditions and is therefore risky
Any tips for the venture x app? I have 8 ccs and don’t want to get blocked.
Shot your shot :)
🐘 Any reason why you excited BILT? Was it just a systematic exclusion because it's a unicorn or because you wouldn't want one?
Low priority given the meta/rules in play. You can easily get it in the late game.
Put another way, if you have 20 cards, Bilt will still happily approve you. Same with Amex.
Not necessarily the case for Chase/Citi/BofA/etc.
Almost impossible for C1.
Doesn't make sense for first 5 (5/24 and opportunity cost there)
Neither does it for C1 and long-term opp cost.
@@AskSebbynot sure in other cities, but in NYC bilt also gives 8x on dining on a lot of NYC restaurants, which is really really high added value.
wait the way you always talked about it before i thought 5/24 was inquires not cards? so i can just apply for chase cards when ever? i dont apply for credit cards that often but my inquiries i though were always too high lol and by inquires i mean hard pulls
It's cards.
Answered but will reiterate:
1) No bonus for upgrading
2) Wait 48 months from CSP bonus to get CSR (via a fresh new card application) if you want the bonus
Are 🐘the litigious, cease and desist types that don't like being mentioned in videos unless it's in a positive light?
No AmEx?
Usually better in the late game as your spend increases. Lots of people in popup jail due to low spend: www.asksebby.com/guides/amex-application-rules
Definitely jumped too quickly into the 🐘, brushing past Chase too quickly in the process... 🙃
I don't really know what my ideal setup is to be honest... 😣
Airline status overrated. Harder to get free upgrades nowadays.
Wow that was a great video once again, that one is a great view for someone who is just starting out definitely. I will look at your video a few more times so I can set my kid up, they r authorized on 2 of my NFCU No annual fee card but I want them to get their own since they r off to college I will look at the first card you suggested. Once again great content keep it coming thanks for sharing
I’m claiming FIRST because I can. #TeamRoseGoldAlwaysWins
🐘 what’s the timeline for this? 10+ years?
Timeline is what fits your lifestyle.
10 years sounds about right with pure organic spend
Elephant
Year 5 and I’m still going strong on chase cards only 😂
Yup Chase Freedom, Chase Flex, Chase Preferred and World of Hyatt.
@@ds5651 then restart with the sapphires after 48 months lol

How many cards do you have? Or how many cards is too much cards?
Too many cards is when you lose track of them. I would only get a number that fits your lifestyle.
The limit does not exist

How about Amex Blue prfd.? Groceries 6% which is exceptional, Gas 3%, better than most. And for those who don’t travel much it is better than most you listed. Also for those of us who live rural Amazon Prime with 5% back on purchases. Obviously, no Whole Foods in rural areas but we get an average of two or three item each week from Amazon and there is no delivery cost. Both of these cards have an annual fee but the fee is negligible compared to the rewards and benefits.
Blue works great for me especially with 6% on streaming and Amazon card works too
I think he’s just saying stay away from Amex till late game which I can vouch for from perma-jail
@@WhatsThePoints1 for several years, I had Amex Platinum which for a small business owner was a superior card. Also had Chase Ink which was equally as good. Now being retired, the Amex Blue Prfd is my only Amex card. Hope your situation with Amex changes soon.
