This is an interesting recording. A young Ghena before she controlled the vibrato and an early bright dictioned Carreras before he blew his lyric tenor voice out on this repertoire. The Oscar ( Stramaglia) is very much the bright, birdy Italian soubrette which is very welcome, considering how many types of coloraturas have sung this with no charm or urgency. The Ulrica is Italian and she is rather careful with the bottom voice, oddly enough which is DULL. Cappucilli is solid and even with great diction/line. The orchestra is very loud and the downbeat is devastatingly terrifying turning this opera into an exciting horror show. This definitely is not a boring rendition. Carreras is miscast though. The primo uomo just has to have a huge voice. That said it highlights everyone else very well as the King dies anyway.
