Across the board, this is a thoroughly enjoyable performance of Un Ballo in maschera. José Carreras was still in his twenties and sings with purity of tone and freshness along with an innate sense for Verdi. Ghena Dimitrova alternates from dramatic outbursts the likes of which would put any Wagnerian soprano to shame, with displays of beautifully crafted legato singing. Piero Cappuccilli rounds out the cast as Anckarström. How often do the stars align to give you not one, not two but three titans like this under the same roof.
