    We used to have perch like that here in Michigan but that was before walleyes and zebra mussels changed the lake Huron ecosystem. We still have perch, but you don't see 14" size in the Saginaw Bay much any more.

      I'm in Ontario and on Georgian Bay so I know what you mean, everything is always changing but never for the better it seems.

      Harder to catch them on sag bay these days but there still here. Last year I caught multiple 14 to 15 inchers. Heading out Thursday to try to find some in the shallows.

      That's because the zebra mussels munch on the zoo plankton lake perch used to feed on.

    They look a lot like our european perch which grow a little bigger, 20" are possible, while the biggest getting close to 23-24", weighing well above 7lbs.

    Was this filmed this year or last winter? Definitely on my list of lakes to go to now that I am retired, it looks like like I should come out with the ATV with the tracks on due to the snow depth on the lake.

    People illegally put Northern Pike in the Idaho Panhandle lakes of Idaho in the 80's. When I was a kid it was common to catch large, not necessarily jumbo, perch at most lakes without much effort. Now you are hard pressed to find a medium sized one.

    Any follow-up on the tag? How old? Did you record the info from the tag? Did you even report it? They are PACKED with eggs.

    Can’t stress enough the need to release those jumbos

    • @randyreading562
      @randyreading562 Місяць тому +3

      Actually on that lake that is not true. I know the biologist and a few years back the jumbo population was down because prior to that there were too many (bigger perch) and they ate too many of the juvenile perch so recruitment of the larger perch was hurt. Now, after numbers of bigger perch were down, more smaller perch survived and grew into the larger fish. This lake just simply is not harmed because pressure is low and in fact it's OK to keep the larger fish to allow more of the small ones to survive. But even then, you are going to have fluctuations because of the natural population cycles not being disrupted by fishing pressure Part of it is the fishing culture where trout & salmon get more attention, and the fact that most of the pressure on perch is during the winter.

      Learn the science. Fish and Game has studied this for years. Angler harvest has no impact on the population of jumbos on the lake. There is no limit.

    We had 14 to 15 inches in the70's and 80's until white perch were put in. What was a great lake for nice fish has been a dead body of water ever since. Those of you from south central PA knows where I mean.
