    Nice place Austin. I'm liking the trees! For me it makes a big difference when you can hear birds outside rather than just cars and honking.

    Wow that is a really nice place for that price. The view alone was stunning!! I loved all of the windows in the main bedroom. Don’t care that it was small and the bed was by the window, it made it look amazing. It proabably felt like your bed was on top of a sea of trees.

    Best thing about Chengdu is that if you feel hungry at 2am you can go to the nearest street and find lots of BBQ hotpot places that are still opening.

    Hi Austin! Thank you for giving us a look into what living in China is like! I started watching your videos when I took an interest in the Chinese language. Though most of your videos are about the culture and food in China, would you ever be interested in making a video about the language? How you learned it, advice to people learning it good study habits/practice techniques, how long it took you before you felt like you were fluent etc. I know you've gone over it a little in the past, though I'd be interested in seeing a longer and more up to date video about it. Anyway thanks for the videos. :)

    How's the roach problem in Sichuan? When I was in Shanghai, I didn't have much of a problem. Maybe once a month, I'd run into one, if that. But down here in Guangdong? Jeez, it' a never-ending battle.

    Most universities pay a max cap of $400 -1K per month, you must be working at a hell of a training school because gov owned Uni’s never paid that much. The very best training school I taught at just paid 1.6Wan

    • @austinguidry2
      @austinguidry2  2 роки тому

      Universities have upped their game in recent years...the two unis I taught at in Chengdu paid 8,400 yuan / month and 11,600/month (after bonuses and flight allowance etc.). When I was shopping around for jobs in Spring 2021, I was seeing universities all around offering 14-18k / month...more often than not. I had heard about that over the years, but enjoyed the job I was at, regardless of the pay. Yeah, training schools can pay REALLY well if you're at the right one and if you sell a lot of demo classes hahaha that's where I made the real money! The lowest salary I ever had was 4000 / month, but they provided an on-campus apartment for me. Also, that was in 2012 in Gansu, one of the poorest provinces in China. That's basically unheard of now....if you're thinking the max cap of university teachers is 1k USD, I'd recommend checking different jobs websites or check a different region. I can't think of a single place that pays foreign teachers as low as what you're saying....that's lower than local Chinese salaries nowadays. My wife made more than $400 USD / month as a barista at Starbucks in Chengdu years ago.

    Hey man, I've just been watching a few videos on your channel and came to this one. Looks like a really nice place, clean and good natural light. Can I ask does it have any of those small but irritating things, like windows that don't quite shut or plaster that's not finished properly?
    I just wonder if its a problem with my apartment or one that's universal all over China.
    Thanks man, keep making these video on your channel, really interesting!

    • @austinguidry2
      @austinguidry2  8 років тому

      The plastering problem is all over China.....drives me nuts!!! I really hate it - I recently went looking for apartments and had to say no to a lot of them for that reason and mold. Ugh. Windows not shutting properly is a fairly easy fix - I've never had that problem in all the apartments I've had in China (I actually just moved again last week - will post that video soon).

If you'll be out in Wenjiang, I'm not really sure. There aren't too many apartment buildings super close to that campus, I don't think

    Is that near the 1st,2nd or 3rd ring road? In any case, your place works out at about 2,500 Yuan. In Zhejiang, near Hangzhou, I was paying 1000 a month for a 2 bedroom and in Guilin I was paying the same for a huge 3 bedroom apartment. This worries me a bit as I'm coming to Chengdu next month. I'm going to be out near the 3rd ring road 4th section...you think I can get a reasonable 1 bedroom for 1000 Yuan in that area?

    • @discoverydavid
      @discoverydavid 8 років тому

      +Austin Guidry Thanks for your reply. Good to know! My teaching gig there gives me a 1000 stipend, so an extra 500 a month isn't so bad. If you don't mind, I've got one more question: Will living out on the 3rd ring road in Chengdu give me proximity to the countryside? A 20 minute bicycle ride?

    • @jzvr5842

  • @gregmcqueen4540

    • @austinguidry2
      @austinguidry2  2 роки тому

      Around 15% of my salary went to housing...something like that, if I remember correctly. Pay all depends on the job...education salaries go all the way from 11,000 yuan a month all the way up to 50,000+, depending on the job and location. I'm in Hangzhou now, and the average is around 5,000 USD / month for high school teachers (private high schools). Paying for housing is no issue haha it wasn't an issue in Chengdu, either
