Great video sir. For those people not in the business of repairing / restoring, seeing you do it by hand is very helpful and appreciated. But for those who might want to get into this line of work and don't have 40+ years experience, I would hope there's a tool or drill attachment that can help quicken the process. Thanks for making this and your other awesome videos.

That looks great Rudy! I’ve done hundreds of headliners over the last 31 years. And I’ve done it the same way you showed. Except I use a wheel wire brush on my drill to remove the old foam. Then I use a wire brush to clean it off smooth clean. It is messy. I’ve used the same glue and spray gun. I installed it back immediately in the vehicle after I’m done . To replace a headliner on a Jetta with Sun roof is very tedious. Thanks for the video and keep posting more. I enjoy watching!! Ed

Perfect timing and great video as always sir. Drove the truck today and I was sitting in the driveway looking up at where there should be a headliner. But all I see is where someone hacked the material out and left the old brown foam so it falls on me like brown snow while I'm driving. Louisiana with no a/c yet so windows down. That isn't going to wait for cooler temps, it's gotta go. Keep 'em coming and stay blessed.
I did my 77 Coupe Deville like this less than four years ago. It has already gone to powder & sagging! I am so rural I can only do mail order. My problem is avoiding garbage products on the market these days. This time I'm trying black poker table foam that appears pretty durable & some nice suede over that.
Thank you so much for your great instructions. This video inspired me to do the headliner in my 1996 Isuzu Hombre, which has been dangling on my head for years, and more recently creating a public nuisance by creating dangerous driving conditions! Thank you for such a good video. Much appreciated. Since I am in Denmark, and I want to do it myself on my old Land Rover, I've taken the headliner out of the car, and taken off the old material, plus the foam. The precious owner (I recently bought the car) used spray glue which of course did nothing good, and then staples. I could take off the foam and the staples with no problem, but the styropor (the firm plate) is super sticky. It's a bit like the spray glue kind of semi melted the top of the styropor surface a little bit, if that makes sense. Should I clean this stickyness off, before I spray new glue on with my spraygun, or not? And if I should remove the stickyness, what to use, so I avoid dissolving the styropor? Really could use an advice for this from a professional like you. Much appreciated. Kind regards, Redfox.

Good morning Sir, your content is amazing. Thank You. I have a VW with the sticky stuff underneath. It’s a pain in the behind and it’s a mess. Do I need to remove all of it before I install the new one?. I got most of it off. Should I use goo gone to remove the rest? If I use the goo gone do I need to remove that before using the adhesive. Thank You so much.
Hello Xavier, Thank you so much for saying so! I hope this video can be helpful for you for glue removal. ua-cam.com/video/L-z0T-Z4_Uk/v-deo.html Please keep liking and watching!
Yup, been putting off replacing it despite the new material sitting there. Question though, the new material has folds in it, should I iron it, can I iron foam, steam it maybe? Heat gun? Blow dryer? Just lay it out and wait?
Hmmmmm think imma do this now on my truck head liner looking a bit crunchy so seems like a good idea. Plus keeps me from being bored out of my skull lol.
Hello J, I guess you could, but I wouldn't. Not only would it shred the soft fiberglass headliner base and destroy it, but the wire wheel will load up in seconds from the foam and old glue. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Kenny, The easiest fabric would be headliner fabric which has the stretch and foam added already. You could use 1/8" - 1/4" foam. Make sure the fabric that you are using is not to thin as the glue will soak through. Be sure the fabric has a very good stretch. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello. Iove your videos! I attempted my DIY headliner installation. Rookie mistake, I caused a few fingerprints indents. Is there actually no way to take these fingerprints out? Maybe steamer, Hot flat iron, or potentially just leave it out in the Texas Sun for foam to puff back out? Or is it a lost cause and have to redo?
Hello Julio, Thank you so much for saying so. Try pulling it out with a fine needle. I usually wait till the next day for the glue to dry for this reason. Remember, learning is doing! Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery it's been bugging me all day, so I took a quick run back to the house to check on it. Finger print was still there. But I placed the heat gun in that area and smoothed it out. Took care about 90% of it. Looks a lot better to the point where you can't even tell. I will place it out in this 100+ degree weather on Sunday and try to smooth the others out. I think it will work, hopefully. Lol
I'm trying my luck with black vinyl for headliner. I'm using a drill with hard bristles (might be quicker). I've got a 2000 bmw 323i and a 1994 sierra k1500 that need this job done.
Hello Pg, Good luck with that! Vinyl is very unforgiving. Headliner fabric is much better on the curves. Be extra careful using your drill on the '94 GMC truck headliner since the headliner itself is made from a very loose fiberglass insulation. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery thanks for the tip. You're right. I've watched other videos and since this is my first time doing it I'm going to play it safe I have to buy foam for the vinyl anyway. Your videos are the best, Thank you so much. Not sure this will get seen or answered but just in case I’ve had a headliner question for a while and I’m not sure who better than you to answer it. On old chevys with the bow type headliners. Most people say to trim back the loops the bows run through until they “look right” during installation. There’s no way they were messing around with that on the assembly line when the car was built. I’ve actually been told by an old guy that worked at the factory, it was two guys on the line, and they spent about 5 minutes or less installing the headliner. So, are the aftermarket ones just not made like the originals, or do you really not need to do that, or maybe it just makes it a little better? What do you think?
Hello 78, You are so welcome! Thank you so much for saying so. Well, I think the fit depend on who the manufacture is. In 44 years, I have never installed a premade headliner myself. I have always made mine. What I do is trim back the listings at the bends of the bow. Perfect every time it's tried. Please keep liking and watching!

Hadn’t seen you on UA-cam and have been doing research for awhile on finding the best teacher for upholstery. Luckily I’m getting a Juki (junky) and found you that way. Im starting my upholstery journey and hope to have a business up and running here in the near future. Was going to sign up for a a course that teaches from the ground up. Hello Deested, Welcome aboard! My best advice is that when you get your sewing machine, just put it to work. Sew anything you can. No need to study a course or worse yet to be an apprentice. (1) Remember, learning is doing. (2) This is not rocket science. (3) Know that upholstery is 10% knowledge and 90% technique learned over time. I am sure you will do just fine in your new business.
