    Technique #2015: lay a paper towel over the contact cement then soak it with mineral spirits when the cement is dry and old. Let it sit for quite some time. If it's really bad, lay plastic wrap over it and it can soak for hours without drying up.

    I was the one who exclusively did tops in our shop for a few years in the late 70’s. One year I did 1000. Most were padded Cadillacs Buicks and Oldsmobiles. I have the arthritis in my hands to prove it. (And I did buy a few windshields.)

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  11 місяців тому +3

      Hello Fire, my brother! Yep, I used to get a lot of new cars from the dealer and put tops on for them to get more profit. Padded tops, French rear windows, 1/4 and 1/2 tops. Later were the simulated convertibles. See, I'm going down memory lane. Please keep liking and watching!

    If that were my car, Id have the vinyl removed, and would not re-install vinyl. The paint looks great, without the vinyl. We use custom made stuffer tools, made from teflon. They are soft, smooth, and no chance of scratch's. Nice job !

    I'm willing to bet the owner just purchased the car recently and the seller did the cheapest/quickest install to maximize his profit of the sale and the current owner is now paying a "second time" to have you install it properly. When I bought my Alfa I waited until I found one that wasn't "restored" so I knew no corners were cut in the restoration. Nice install and beautiful results.

I have been a master mechanic for many years even done my own paint jobs but I have never tackled a vinyl top I was afraid of the sewing part and the stretching part. You made it all very clear thank you thank you thank you. You just save me $2,500 from having to take it to a an upholstery shop. Is there a certain type of vinyl I should get? And where should I get it from?

      Hello MW, You are so welcome! I love hearing good news like this. Just Google "Upholstery supplier near me" and ask for vinyl top vinyl, or Landau vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!

    You could have put silicone across the front window to keep the air from getting up under there it would have never bubbled up😅😂❤❤

    That top looks great. All I've seen underneath vinyl were rusted out.

    Great job. Wow you really explained every thing so great. Would you mind saying what vinyl and thread to use for a vinyl top please?

      Hello Michael, Thank you so much! For the vinyl, is specifically made for vinyl tops. It's called landau vinyl. Most upholstery suppliers should have it. I use size 92 bonded nylon or polyester thread. Please keep liking and watching!

    Great job. Thanks for the demonstration. My only question is how to make the pattern to include a strip of vinyl below the rear window for example on 1977 Chrysler New Yorker.?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  11 місяців тому +1

      Hello Little, Thank you so much! I would never make a pattern for the lower rear window strip. I would just cut out what I needed and install it. Not rocket science, don't over think it, just do it. Please keep liking and watching!

    Hey Rudy, I like that red paint job on the roof. Quality sprayed. Maybe the owner should have just left it as a 100% red painted car? Good for you though. Easy removal.

    Hi there. I been watching so many of your videos and you are truly a master of your craft. Not only in skill but in how you teach it. I have not come across a video on how you layout a top stitch for diamond pattern back rest and center of seat cushions. Do you have a video for this? Thank you in advance and keep up the excellent videos.
