I haven't sewn anything yet. That is why I am watching your channel, to learn as much as I can before I even buy a machine, hoping I will at least have a pretty good idea of what to do and what not to do. Thank you for your videos.. 🙂 Phillip Hall
Hello Phillip, I prescribe to you to get that first sewing machine ASAP. Even a used industrial sewing machine with reverse, a walking foot and a welt foot. The best thing you can do for yourself is sew through a machine to learn. Imagine watching all the videos how to drive a car. Sound silly now doesn't it? Remember learning is doing! I continue to be a Plumbing Contractor at my 51st. year. When you make a comment regarding experience I really get it. I am also a car guy and love leather upholstery. I am fortunate to have done a large project at GST Auto Leathers in Rochester Hills, Mich. where I live. The contact person that works for them is a great guy and offered me to pick out some hides of my choice ! I made a roll around stand for them out of 4" PVC pipe. I have a 1968 Porsche 911 that I would like to cover the dash pad and also the door panels. So I am ready and hungry to learn. Now I need to ask what kind of machine should I look for ? Are there any on the used market, where do I start looking for one ? Thank You for this channel sir !
Hello Guitar, You are so welcome! Us old school guys need to stick together right? I am sure you will do just fine with your 911. Really any new or used industrial sewing machine with reverse, a walking foot and a welt foot will do just about anything you can throw at it. Many upholstery suppliers offer used sewing machines. I got mine from a sewing machine dealer. Remember you are your best teacher. Learning is doing!! Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Mary, I guess I wouldn't know as I always sit in front of my sewing machine. I also do seats for a lot of semi trucks and never had a problem. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Steve, Thank you so much for saying so. Any good upholstery supplier should have the pre-wound bobbins for your industrial sewing machine. I use the coats brand. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Star, Most upholstery suppliers should be able to help. I use Keyston Bros. (Not sponsored) They have several locations in the USA and they ship. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery yes I'll keep watching but my question is to lock the thread in your supposed to go forwards and then backwards for a few stitches and then go forward again. Isn't it going to come loose easily if you don't do that?
@@akbananachucker2441 Hello AK, I see. If you are sewing two panels together I definitely would lock the stitch. But in this video, It is just a demonstration of sewing a straight line, not an assembly or actual job. Please keep liking and watching!

ok hello i have a question nothing to do with this video so i bought a spray gun that has a cup to pour glue in but its a hassle to clean up all the time what do i need so i want have to go thur this hassle
Hello Arturo, Easy. I never clean my gun. As long as I often use it, the glue does not dry inside. It would be necessary to clean if the glue is allowed to dry inside for a very long time in very hot temperatures. I am busy all the time, so I use the glue all the time. Please keep liking and watching!
hey OG, I'm looking to get started on a small project - I got a motorcycle seat pan, need to cut foam and them upholster some leather. Any recommendations on a kit to get? i see them on Amazon but not sure what I need to get started,
Hello Xen, It sounds like you are on your way to getting your cycle seat done. In 45 years, I have never bought a kit. I just make it myself. Sorry I do not know. Please keep on liking and watching!
What psi do you use on your glue /paint sprayer. I've got a el cheapo harbor freight paint sprayer and it has a sticker on it that says 45 psi max. At that pressure it sputters out randomly.
Hello Mr, Yep el cheapo. Some Spanish lingo there... Hehe. For small jobs, I can go as low as 20 psi. Larger jobs as high as 65 psi. Please keep liking and watching!
Love your content! Good humour and great tips 👍. What model machine do you use? I have a "heavy duty" home machine, but thinking a decent second-hand Juki would be very beneficial 😊
Hello Paul, Thank you so much for the kind words! I use a Juki Lu-2810. I think any industrial sewing machine with a walking foot, reverse, and a welt foot will get you by just fine. Please keep liking and watching!
Great tips, thanks!. I've been running through lots of "clearance special" fabric from the local sewing center, trying to perfect my lines. Question, I notice that my stitches are not straight and in line, how do you get the individual stitches straight, end to end, similar to this: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and not like: \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (exaggerated angle). Is it the needle type or is something going on with the sewing machine that needs to be addressed? Is it possibly a tension issue? Thanks for all of your content, I'm learning a lot from you and your channel!
Hello Zing, You are so welcome! It is definitely the sewing machine and not you. There will be some of that, \\\ to some degree. Thicker thread sizes will show that. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello The Highlander, I know the type of chalk your talking about. I have never used that one. Any kind of marker would work. Please keep liking and watching!
When the piece is wider than the machine neck? You fold it up, but it's trying to unfurl, hitting the body of the machine, and your machine is the old clutch style, not a smooth rheostat. A slow tap-tap-tap.... then zip! Almost straight!😉
Hello Martin, Sewing a strait line is much harder than driving a car strait. Just think of it. Nobody ever drives their car in a perfectly strait line. The car will always deviate left or right. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!

Machinist chalk is great for precision chalk lines. Same stuff as school chalk, but it's a thin shard instead of a cylinder

thank you Rudolph!

Any chance of seeing some seat spring/suspension repair? Thanks for all the great videos .

Rudy, I love your tip on putting a green tape in front of the needle. Great idea, bro. I will be doing it as well. I think you said to glue it.

Show us how to re thread the needle and the bottom bobber
Dude, you need to learn about the magic words.
Hello Tracy, First you put the thread through the little hole in the needle.... Bottom bobbins are different on different machines. Please keep liking and watching!

I sew interior for semi trucks, how do you keep a straight line if you can't sit in front of the machine?
Hello Mary, I guess I wouldn't know as I always sit in front of my sewing machine. I also do seats for a lot of semi trucks and never had a problem. Please keep liking and watching!
Seats aren't a problem, but headliners are crazy hard.
@@marysimbro9415 Hello Mary, Yep a little more elbow grease for sure. But we get through it in the end. Please keep liking and watching!
Another great video. Question for you, what kind or brand do you use for pre wound bobbins? And where do you get them? Thanks in advance
Hello Steve, Thank you so much for saying so. Any good upholstery supplier should have the pre-wound bobbins for your industrial sewing machine. I use the coats brand. Please keep liking and watching!
Rudy, who do you use for your leather, vinyl, and foam supplies?
Hello Star, Most upholstery suppliers should be able to help. I use Keyston Bros. (Not sponsored) They have several locations in the USA and they ship. Please keep liking and watching!
don't you have to go over the beginning and the end to that it stays and doesn't undo it self? How do you get it to stay?
Hello Ak, Not sure about your question as what I did here is show how to sew a strait line.
Where can I get a good quality 1/4 in foam scrim? thank you. Love your videos.

ok hello i have a question nothing to do with this video so i bought a spray gun that has a cup to pour glue in but its a hassle to clean up all the time what do i need so i want have to go thur this hassle
@@oldschoolautoupholstery got it but I just started so don't use it much right now I've seen some videos where no cup was used

hey OG, I'm looking to get started on a small project - I got a motorcycle seat pan, need to cut foam and them upholster some leather.
What’s kind of machine do you use? Sold my old Singer years ago. Kind of thinking about getting another machine.
Hello Fire, I got what I thought was the best for me at the time. Juki LU-2810 Please keep liking and watching!
When sewing double lines, don't you line up you needle punctures with the first line?
Hello Stanley, I line up the stitches for a French seam by the seam itself, not the stitch on the other side. Please keep liking and watching!

What is your favorite and/or easiest to work with thread?
Hello Jenim, I use T90 nylon bonded thread on pretty much everything I do.
Tailors also use chalk but the really flat an square ones which might be an option? Maybe they've never heard of chinamarkers eh?
Hello The Highlander, I know the type of chalk your talking about. I have never used that one. Any kind of marker would work. Please keep liking and watching!
When the piece is wider than the machine neck? You fold it up, but it's trying to unfurl, hitting the body of the machine, and your machine is the old clutch style, not a smooth rheostat.
A slow tap-tap-tap.... then zip!
Almost straight!😉
Hello Lou, That is exactly why I got a long arm sewing machine! Please keep liking and watching!

so simple explanation, but let me loose on a sewing machine hold a straight line foget about it ha ha
Hello Martin, Sewing a strait line is much harder than driving a car strait. Just think of it. Nobody ever drives their car in a perfectly strait line. The car will always deviate left or right. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
