1 - An overcoat is *traditionally* worn under a suit. If you do not intend to wear a suit the coat, you have the option to go for a slightly smaller size if you have problems with sleeve length, or its just your preference.
2 - Ashley is somewhat correct in saying that the shoulder width should end just past where your shoulders do. The exception to this is an overcoat with a dropped shoulder.
3 - The notch lapel is default, but peak lapels are also a great style for an overcoat, and pairs wonderfully with a double-breasted coat.

Totally disagree with the long overcoats pass the knees. Although it is harder to maintain I love how I feel and the looks that I get with my longer Pea coats

Tommy in Peaky Blinders looks awesome in long overcoats. By the way, traditionally overcoats are below knee level because people usually walk in the colds and a long overcoat will provide more warmth. I wear a long overcoat below the knee and it never gets nasty, dirty or something messy even if I walk through the rain.
I have seen this pics on internet in which overcoats are not necessarily used with blazer. Of course its with fashion purposes, but still looks good, is there a way to achieve those looks once in a while ? what would be your suggestion for those cases ?

I'm sorry about the current style of men's topcoats measuring, especially if it's a dress or a more formal style topcoat. You are correct about the chest measurement, however, the length is what makes the difference. You need to take a look at what Brooks Brothers, Men's Warehouse or any major Retailer of Menswear clothing is selling. The longer the coat whether it's a long peacoat or a Chesterfield Dress topcoat the better the look and feel of the coat. When most men purchase a topcoat they do not want it to be confused with a jacket. A topcoat in which its length is behind the knees is actually at the knee. Most men 6' taller and above do not wear a topcoat cut off at the knee
Nope on the pea coat with suit. People can be too rigid with what is formal/casual wear.
+H8tthis You are right that there is no problem with a peacoat on a suit, blazer or sport jacket in terms of register, except for the really formal occasions. For everyday suits and especially blazers, it's perfectly fine. HOWEVER, a well-fitting peacoat will usually not have enough room for a thich jacket and unless your jacket is fashion-forward i.e. too short, the peacoat might not cover it. So the video is correct about these practical issues. But in terms of style, there's certainly nothing wrong with dressing down a suit or blazer outfit with an informal coat - that's generally how you do it, dressing down "from the outside" (rather than, say, those hideous t-shirt+blazer combos you see on TV).
tl;dr: get a slightly longer and roomier peacoat if you want to wear it over a jacket.
Looks very good! It's hard to judge, but is the peacoat slightly longer than usual (i.e. than the US navy model which I've only seen pictures of) and the suit a little shorter? It's definitely doable, just not with every jacket and suit (a traditional suit goes over the bum) and you probably want a few centimeters' "safe zone" to cover the jacket.
But your pictures demonstrate that there's no problem in terms of class/formality with a peacoat, unless you're going to a formal/evening occasion. In business and day events, it's very classy.

why are peacoats more preferred than say, trench coats, bridge coats, overcoats or duffel?

How does that answer alpha's question. Iam 5'7 as well. Just really stocky. I hoover between 185-188 late spring and summer. 190-195 fall. 198 in winter.
It's so hard to find a peacoat/trench coat in the States that has a flattering fit. Everything is so boxy here. I just ordered a top coat from J Crew and am keeping my fingers crossed that it fits. If it doesn't, I'm going to have to buy one when I visit the UK again. I'm 5'9, 127 lbs btw.

100% wool is the most luxurious material but wool blends give the fabric some structural properties that the pure wool doesn't have (less piling, more abrasion resistance). If opting for a blend, the ones containing nylon are usually better because nylon is the softest synthetic fiber.

Charcoal Gray or Black overcoat
Navy, light blue, camel, charcoal, grey, and black are classics but maroons, greens, and browns can be really nice and unique too.
It depends on how you intend to wear it. For more casual outfits, camel and light grey will be the easiest to dress down (in that order). For more formal outfits, opt for black, charcoal grey or navy blue (again, in that order). Charcoal grey, brown and navy blue represent middle-of-the-road "business" look.

I completely disagree about wearing long overcoats because the rationale given could be used to argue against wearing pants and leather shoes as well. I don't care about what stains might be left on the longer coats if it keeps me warm. After all, I can just get them dry cleaned and be done with it.

Same. I always wear long overcoats below the knee, gives me the most warmth. And I never experience it being dirty even if I walked through the rain. So I don’t know why she said it’s a no no. Honestly long overcoats looks more elegant/stylish. Look at Tommy in peaky blinders.
I like to get an overcoat or pea coat a little big. If they are too small they will wrinkle your sports coat. Pea coats are inexpensive, a fellow could even have 2. One for wearing with a sports coat and one for not.
You should not wear one with a sports coat though as they are not overcoats.
Who's making these rules?...I always get my overcoats slightly bigger so I can wear anything I want underneath (Sterlingwear website also recommends getting bigger size for this reason)...and my USN Pea Coat is long (46L) too...Sterlingwear pea coats are labelled 'L' and 'S' which I believe is long or short and not large or small as that size is already in the chest measurement...Point being is that if you like it then wear it irrelevant of what someone says it should or shouldn't look like...Thems my rules
Overcoats look much better when the length of the overcoat past the knees, that is the classic way, and have to be roomier because you are wearing a suit under the overcoat. If you are not wearing a suit, I recommend wearing a peacoat instead.
Prince Charles has two overcoats that go way PAST his knees and they look great. I think he knows a bit about clothes.

In your video, you make it seem like you HAVE TO wear a suit/blazer with an overcoat. IMHO, that not true at all. Overcoats still look nice with simply a buttoned shirt underneath. But of course, the fitting will be different.
Am I the only one that finds that peacoats just make you look smaller?! I think it's a very bad recommendation for shorter guys to get a peacoat... I think it's just a false stereotype that shorter guys should wear shorter clothing... For me, a topcoat (instead of a peacot) will make you look taller i think...
