"Fashion" is fickle. Don't be "fashionable." Have some style. "Timeless Style" focuses on iconic pieces that have stood the test of time. This series is focused mostly on menswear, but some of these items are unisex as well.
This episode: The classic, iconic, and ubiquitous Navy Pea Coat. We'll delve into the history of the navy pea coat, the reasons it has endured as a staple for so long, and the details of my particular pea coat, a US Navy issue officer's or Reefer pea coat, made in 1966.

I work at the factory that produces the black plastic buttons.
In the biz we call them Anchor 50’s.
They’re made right here in the good ol’ US of A(because it’s unlawful to make military garments from materials produced outside of the American provinces don’t you know). 3:51

Interesting! I hope you still have enough of a market for them now that the navy doesn't issue the pea coat as standard.

@@stuffandthingsyoutube 🏢Of course they’re sold to several other companies as well. Lots of designers make pea coats.
In fact, buttons are a commodity that never seem to be out of demand.

I still have my Navy pea coat that was issued to me in boot camp. I love it, except I never get to wear it because I live in Houston. 😞 But you are right, it's a classic and - if weather permits - never out of style. Puts you in a pipe smoking mood. 🙂
Learning that they stopped issuing this to sailors breaks my heart. Yet another tradition gone.

I have a navy issue pea coat from the maritime college I went to and it’s the warmest and most comfortable winter coat. Heavy enough to keep you warm and insulated, but not too heavy that you can barely move in it. I could wear a t shirt or sweater mod winter underneath and still be warm with either. Fantastic coat that’s worth the money.

Agreed! And very tough wearing too. Like I said, mine is almost 57 years old and still going strong!

An intro that will not be ignored and a coat that commands respect. I've covered many a mile, both nautical and otherwise in one and if the winds allow, many more to come.

I initially enlisted in the Navy in 1973; that was a time when the Navy was getting away from the “crackerjack blues” and issuing the “Officer-like”uniforms. I was an “airdale” (P-3 aircrew), so I didn’t lament the problems that seagoing Sailors had in storing the “new” issue uniforms in tight spaces on ships. But I completed my first enlistment, went to college and returned to the Navy as a commissioned Officer. I completed 37 years, total service. A retired O-6 (Captain), I got rid of my commissioned “reefer”……but I still have my Peacoat from 1973. I’ve kept my weight in check and you’re right…that Peacoat really “rocks”….especially with well-fitting denim, a light colored turtleneck….and EVERYTIME I wear it, I feel I’ve earned the right to “aye, mate”!! My two daughters and son….all want it when I pass. They also want my flight jackets (both the leather G2 and my Nomex OD green). I keep telling them “you want one? Earn it and enlist!”. Of course, that goes over like a lead balloon! And if they wait long enough, they’ll get mine when I “cross that last river”. Oh well….Nice review….of an iconic coat with a helluva lot of history behind it! Bravo-Zulu, well done, very well done.

Wonderful and informative video!!!! I will have to take a look for some older models!!!! I’ve got a Sterlingwear of Boston Peacoat, a shame that the US Navy opted not to continue issuing them especially since they have now gone out of business!!!! No idea how old (probably post 1980) mine is but I absolutely love wearing it, it’s a long for the size but I kind of like the longer length!!!! Cheers and pleasant smokes!!!!

As always, thank you for reminding me having been the audience. I'm so forgetful these days.^^
Serious question: is scratchiness an issue? I've read a lot of reviews for modern versions and this came up a lot. And prevented me from bying one because I experienced many a scratchiness with other woolen products. Which is a shame because I totally agree with you in terms of classiness and style!
    Great video btw!

I do during cooler days in the temperate months, but you're going to have problems mid-winter with the temperature drops in-so-far as the legging is concerned. Take care with the anchor button. The shoulders tend to be broader, making these coats ideal for fitting over a suit jacket.

I did once, worked great! Was my brother-in-law's funeral in January with snow on the ground. Called around trying to borrow a topcoat. In the end his wife gave me his pea coat and I wore it as a topcoat. Would have worn my own, but over the years mine shrunk up and I could not fit into it. (Well that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.) Now days seems like the only people wearing a suit to a funeral are the deceased and the minister.
