@@thehonestwargamerstreamsI’m genuinely not sure mate, you’ve done such a great job with this! I really like the political context that you add, the humour and external references, and discussion of things like how the product range influences the lore & storytelling. I guess the only thing I’d add would be even more intensely quotable hot-takes like “based of chaos” and “Cities are the Gwyneth Paltrow of armies”
This might only be your first "lore video" but I think you've already hit on a niche that most other videos don't - _actually talking about things like themes, class etc!_ I seldom ever watch lore videos because so many of them are just someone reading out a story from a book I could have read myself. Really looking forward to more videos like this!
Honestly one of the best lore videos I've watched. Gutted I missed the twitch discussions. Really enjoying the thoughts thrown in with what could this mean in future or how this ties to that and parallels to real world history. May be consider chapters or something to break it up, it might be a me thing but seeing a 2hr UA-cam makes me pause before committing so something to make it feel more manageable, definitely dont cut it down though I'm loving the depth and analysis, feels like you've done it more justice by keeping it long form. Hope i can catch at least some of the next one on twitch.
Tbh I don't need epic music or prepared speech and stories, I just want hours and hours of friendly Rob telling us what's happening in the mortal realms. Perfect prospect for endless painting sessions.
Thanks so much for putting this together. Please keep the lore videos coming - love how accessible this format. I've felt like the information actually went in my noggin vs some other more dense lore video formats so keep it coming. Stay square based
This was a good recap of AOS lore! I had recently just been thinking of wanting to look more into the realities of the lore as obviously it has evolved since the first edition which is when I last really looked into it. Although, you mention that some YTers aren't so engaging when it comes to how they present lore. I think that in this space, where I can think of literally 3 people who cover it at all, we should be lifting them up and shouting them out rather than saying they're not doing a good enough job.
Finally finished this video a couple days later. Fantastic work Rob. It's the first lore-cast I've listened all the way through. You made it interesting and fun.
Other already said it but I think this is an awesome video. You really can add something from yourself, to every paragraph in the book. I also like how by the end it stopped being about Cities only, and you made a summary of whole AoS lore in like 15 minutes. I hope you are going to make more lore videos!
Wow. Great video. Every time you said “the taint of chaos” I could really picture it. And I was like “wow, I really wanna cleanse that taint”. Great work.
Thanks for the video! I've really had a tough time engaging with AoS lore, it just seemed so disconnected from what I was familiar with and made more to facilitate games rather than to be a cohesive world, but this has really helped me establish some context for what is going on and understand what it is actually like to live in AoS. For me, setting is very important to be able to engage with a game, so hearing about all the people and places is great.
Hey Rob! Appreciate this type of content & would love to see a sequel/update once the DawnBringer Crusades are done! Lorewise, I think aerial+mountainous siege Tempest Eye is the most interesting, & hope a BL book explores it further, & maybe we see Skaven war-blimps one day, maybe in a FOMO box once they expand the KO range. Next time I hope you cover metaliths/floating islands & the reasons they colonize various locales/realms more. I would think procuring Aqua Gyranis springs/aqualiths would be like prospectors seeking a gold rush. Also, that anchored metaliths would be perfect as watchtowers & sniper platforms once unloaded, or even larger ones being converted to floating fortresses (to serve as the innermost keep of the "castle.") I would also be curious as to your theories as to how fusiliers are marching long distance (& maneuvering) w/ all that gear--pack animals, magitech troop carriages, wagons drawn by exotic beasts of burden, steelhelms carrying extra ammo, sleds, etc. etc. An armored steam train connecting Hammerhal Aqshy to nearby strongpoints would be pretty rad! So many possibilities across the realms to visualize! Teasing out in the implications of the lore, contextualizing it, even with unit participation in the meta* could be a great way to set yourself apart from other lore videos, while also helping to grow both the hobby, & more specifically, driving interest in its superior protagonist faction. Some people will never like/get Stormcast. & How about trying some of that Finnish black liquor on your stream?? *I'm guessing a lot of IronDrakes, Longbeards, or any Duardin that isn't a Hammerer or gyro pilot has been transitioned to city defense/militia duty, &/or are overseeing construction of prefab buildings/fortifications mostly for future crusades. I'm guessing a fair amount of Sorceresses & their Black Guard (& Scourge Privateer mercenaries) are being cajoled into babysitting nascent Human crusades, especially for those of us looking for a more balanced play experience than just... Leafblower: the Army. Cheers!
MORE PLEASE! Great community cooperation for content and style. The longer format is great for kicking back, painting and listening. What are Seraphon up to?
I might be a but late, but I loved this video. I personally prefer longer format lore videos because I find it a lot easier to paint along to, I'm not having to look up new videos after 20 minutes. I also really liked the more "casual" for lack of a better word, approach!
so much better than other lore videos - i want to talk about the stuff in the setting, not listen to someone's poorly rewritten audiobook!! top stuff, would love to see more
Super vid Rob, cheers. Really appreciated all the work you put into this, love your way of presenting the lore. Will definitely tune in for more. I also got Base coats down on 11 squigs as the time flew by 👍💪👌
I'm new to your channel I think this video is the best way of projecting the atmosphere of the lore without being so samey , it's just like you describe as a deep dive into it which is totally killer so please keep it up my friend 🤘
I really liked this way of unpacking the lore. Because its got some extra contex that isn't provided by the book, it gives me even more ideas for how I want to build my force and its lore.
Loved watching the streams of this and it was even better the second time around. There was a ton I missed on the first pass! It’s great evergreen content too
This was really entertaining to watch you make over the last few days, regardless of how well it does I think it's cool you're trying new things, stepping out of your comfort zone.
@thehonestwargamerstreams duper engaging and you can feel your passion for it, will deffo keep an eye out for any future law vids you do among the other aos content!
Just came here to say that I did in fact enjoy it. You scratched an itch for AoS lore I didn't know I had. I always wondered what was up with the new cities of sigmar, now I know. Glad to see the game's narrative is progressing, and cities of sigmar look sweet. But I still think the range would have been more striking with mixed units. I want a mixed unit of ogre great weapons and human spearmen. Fusiliers with dwarf melee troops standing side by side! Ugh. What a shame.
8:00 - I would argue that the icky real-world connotations are part of the grimdark. You can't help but be skeptical of the colonialist nature of the Dawnbringer Crusades, or the fact that people are essentially being sent to die in droves for this Sigmarite manifest destiny.
great review rob, i too love the idea of skaven in blimps (maybe 4th edition???) this theory is why i have held of converting K.Overlords with sky pirate rats - fingers crossed
Many small hamlets and villages survive in the realms through protection deals with chaos warbands (trading food), Kharadron Overlords (trading anything that can't be found in the sky really), OBR (paying the bone tithe) or as CoS outposts.
This is first battletome I consider buying just for the lore. I am going to play Cities of Sigmar in Warcry only, so I don't need the warscrolls. I have however already started building my Wildercorps Hunters. I think I'm going to paint them as Vindicarum, becuase I already have my Stormcast painted as Celestial Vindiactors. But I also think I'm going to build and paint a Lethis warband atsome point. Lethis is basically the coolest city. Maybe another Wildercorps, or maybe warband made from Steelhelms + Freeguild Command.
Rob I absolutely loved this video, best way to do lore videos by far in my opinion. I know I'm late to the party but I'm all liked and subscribed all the same 😁👍🏻 I love the idea of mixing in one mini/unit some of the races like you were talking about, hopefully this one was more about establishing the human side with a new range of minis and we'll get some of that down the line 🤞🏻 I held off the initial release even though I loved the minis but it's been long enough now and I still think they are a must have so I'm starting with WarCry and building up from there, waiting for inevitable Vanguard with all those Army box minis in there
Can you do more of these...i love your take on the mortal realms..Vince on Warhammer weekly does a sarcastic "story time with vince" covering the ild dawn brings stuff...but long from Age of Sigmar does not exist

Enjoy the process buddy and keep the quality 👍🏻 that’s what we come back for sir ✨ Thanks for making my organising day at home much more pleasurable 🖤 legend
Something I remembered when listening to thr bit where not everyone thinks it's a good idea, in one of the newer Stormcast books, even Bastian Carthalos has his doubts about the crusades and how they are kind of a waste of life.
22:15 I think that they rather decided to moved from realmgates lorewise, and then stoped selling them. I got into AoS in 2'ed, when this terrain was still sold. I never really liked them that much, so I got azyrite ruins terrain instead
You discussing this reminds me of the big problem with AoS IMO - the setting is too hodgepodge. The dwarves and elves thing is the big thing that irks me in particular- it’s like they have 2 different sets of lore for elves in particular. On the one hand there are the Old World elves that are part of the cities lore and then there is the AoS Aelves that have completely different and inconsistent lore with the Cities lore. AoS desperately needs these sorts of issues tidied up and a simple hook that it can hang the story off - that isn’t just “fantasy 40K” - which this feels far too much like.
There is this weird belief that AoS doesn't have cohesive lore. Honestly a lot of the threads put down over the last 10 years have been woven together well since 3.0 hit. I find the lore interesting and pretty cohesive, and unfairly maligned.
If you're interested in the dynamic between the Azyrites and the Reclaimed, I really recommend reading Godeater's Son by Noah Van Nguyen.
