A free lesson from a guitar Jedi master.
The modern world is amazing
Master Chet should be proud.
perhaps even the grand master him self
While I don’t disagree, what’s the point of commenting the same thing on every one of Tommy’s videos? Gets a bit old eh?
Guitar master or Jedi master? The sentence actually doesn't make sense lol.
What amazes me is Tommy's generosity in sharing this for free.
It's part of a video lesson you can purchase online
People are ungrateful
Omg, the tone of that guitar and strings. So CRYSTAL CLEAR.
The Dolphin serious eargasm I’m having rn lol
I'm pretty sure it isn't the guitar and strings :D
@@LucasPaiva96 The guitar sounds amazing though?

Ahem, Maton (Aussie custom build) not Martin. Maybe your auto correct is the ignoramus!
because the owner is Tommy Emmanuel
I know a real master by seeing his modesty. When Tommy gives even simpliest tutorials - he never shows off. He explains every quirk so you feel his kind attitude and don't feel yourself stupid or giftless. This is another part of his talent.
Agreed . He seems an AMAZING Teacher .
I can't believe to have a chance to get such a detailed tutorial from one of the best guitarists in the world. Thank you, sir.
I still can't play any of his pieces but everytime I watch one of his lessons I come away with something I can use and build into my own guitar playing. It might be a chord sequence, a voicing or a fingering but there is always something there that is usable in general playing.
Just amazing. It looks so easy in the hands of the master
I was about to say the exact same thing.
I'm guessing you haven't seen this masters version yet ua-cam.com/video/t6yjyT-rHSs/v-deo.html
It is easy tho :D

Remember not to get discouraged thinking "man I'll never make it to Tommy's level..." because first of all there are few guitarists living or dead who ever make it to "Tommy's level" and secondly it's not about levels, it's about expressing yourself on your instrument.Don't worry about what you've achieved technically. I don't mean to say don't bother trying to advance your technique, just do so from a musical perspective. For example say you're learning The House of The Rising Sun on your own and you hear an original idea pop into your head. Take the time to work out that idea even if it means (or rather especially if it means)having to develop a new technique to realize said idea.THAT is the way to think about advancing not by sitting there going over a major scale for an hour. Again YES, technique is important and so of course are scales, but try not to devote ALL of your time to the dry and unmusical repetition of scales. Think MUSIC.
I have practical music exam coming and I feel like all of the expressing yourself is just thrown out the window with this sort of thing
This is so true. I've only just begun to play the guitar a bit shy of six months ago after having played drums and keys for the better part of my life. The difference in the way I learn now as opposed to then couldn't be more pronounced. It's basically a more top-down approach where, instead of continuously practicing scales, chords, rudiments, grooves and whatnot, I now keep expanding basic chords by experimenting and figuring out the notes I want to hear. This leads to many more "happy accidents". I'm actually surprised at how relatively easy it is to progress continually. I'm comfortably certain I'll never become as accomplished as Tommy by a long shot, but I do love the journey towards becoming the best guitarist I myself can be.
Also everybody Tommy's level was once at your level!
Most who never make it never tried. Tommy's where he's at because of hard work. There are few naturals like Jerry Reid, who, Tommy will tell you he struggles to play up to. Jerry was a genius, his picking styles alone were mesmorizing.
Musicality is what it is, and you only achieve it with practice and experience
I love the way Tommy gives his playing a "zooty-yat-da-da-da" bouncy feel. Very much like ragtime playing, in general. He does the same to Deep River Blues. Punchy and Fun to embrace in one's playing. BTW: I recently learned that the gear icon in the window allows you to alter the playback speed! Listening to Tommy's, even slower demonstrations, at .75% brings it home. This is a priceless lesson, unattainable just a few decades back. If a young player isn't taking a lesson everyday on YT they are missing a world of knowledge.
Tommy passing it on. He makes my head wobble every time. A master class.
I love how his playing makes me feel. It sounds so free and spontaneous and alive, but then I realize how much practice, planing and experience goes into his art and then I'm really impressed with his playing. One cool Dude.
ive been playing this tune for years....I didnt realize I couldnt play it. lol tommy, thx man, you inspire me.
Tommy's posts give me so many good laughs because of the way people like you cleverly express your despair. Doesn't make me sound very empathetic - does it - sorry.
@@allymayful It's supposed to be a self deprecating joke as a compliment to how good Tommy is. Now, what I find funny is how people are apparently offended when some make this sort of joke, i don't get why, might be from age difference.
@@kenz2756 there’s a lot that’s hard to understand in our strange world. It’s too easy to offend these days.
@@allymayful Yes, but the thing is, these are older people not getting the jokes. Thinking it's a sign of disrespect to Tommy's teaching, calling them ungrateful brats and what not.
What a great lesson from the Man himself. It is an honor to receive knowledge from him.
Fantastic. He’s used an easy song to teach the nuances and to get the boom chicka down. Just what I needed.
You kinda have to know how to play the song first, pretty easy to play. Then you add his lesson. This is one of the greats and this is a great lesson!
Like most Aussies, I've spent a lifetime seeing Tommy (& his sadly departed brother) on TV, astounding everyone with his soft-spoken ways & extraordinary talent. I've even seen him play live!
It wasn't until I got on UA-cam that I realized how widely known & respected the guy is. I mean, we Aussies have always known he was world-class. I just never knew the rest of the world knew it too...!
MAN, JUST THAT SLIDE UP INFO RELATING TO A VOICE REACHING FOR A HIGHER NOTE WAS PRICELESS. THANKS TOMMY💖💖
Man the negativity.... The best guitar player in the world is modestly taking the time to show you some of his tricks and still some negativity. wow.
I couldn't believe it myself either. I think it just discourages people since they think they can never get to his level but i use it as a way of motivating myself as a player.
Yeah, who the hell would thumbs down this? Jealous, lazy individuals who just can't be arsed to put in the time to learn how to play this kind of style. I can't (yet), but Tommy explains things so well, I know with effort I will be able to. I ain't no slouch on guitar, but Tommy is just one of those rare treasures with talent, humility, and the willingness to share his experience. He makes me want to put in the effort. Double thumbs up from me.
It never ends does it ... so disenchanting ! What is going on with people ?? ; [[
he cant teach for shit...just tricks HONEST HERE...tommy is the greatest but teaching he is garbage
Well u know ... opinions are like assholes...we all got em.....how can anyone not respect this man
Yea, he's the man when it comes to playing guitar. Nice for him to share his gift. Amazing artist.
The Tommy E touch on this classic is a Joy to behold ... or shall I say .. Music to me Ears ! Thanks Music Master for taking the time to do this for us ! Us mortals are most grateful !
Amazing! A month's worth of guitar lesson in 8-minutes. Thanks.
Tommy's energy is just unparalleled. That lick is absolutely genius in every way. Cheers!
Tommy is a LEGEND. I throw my guitar out of the window when i first heard Tommy play, i had to buy another Guitar.
Keep practicing! Don't give up! Tommy is all about repetition 😎
Tommy, as someone who absolutely adores your playing, thank you so much for sharing your time and thoughts with us. What a gift and pleasure to hear and watch you.
"First you draw a face, erase some of the finer details and there! A circle!" -Spongebob
This man is great and I love that he gives back by teaching the rest of us. I have seen and met him about 6 times and he is the real deal.
I cant believe this is free, a lesson from the king himself.
Great lesson! It's 4:30am... Just waiting for the rising sun to try it! Thanks a lot!
what a blessing that he is so eloquent and aware of what he's feeling as he plays
Tremendous....... Tommy is such a great, natural teacher.....notwithstanding his sublime guitar playing. Thanks Tommy....
My goodness, I wasn't expecting goosebumps from just a lesson. Talented.
Tommy is a living legend. And legends make things look easy and simple. A great human being, always cheerful and what a charisma....
I simply love the lessons you give Tommy. Im a finger picker and play this song finger style. I dig that end lick..sweet!
When I get born again, I hope you'll be my guitar teacher! Your the best and most sympathical guitar player ever. Please come to South Germany again!
Amazing guitar player and an amazing human being, so humble with no side whatever. He deserves a Knighthood.
Thank you Tommy Emmanuel this is one of the greatest songs man has ever designed you do it amazing thank you for teaching us and giving us time your time thank you
Me: ok that's looking easy.
1 week after, me again: I think I should learn piano.
Loved that lick in the end!
Tommy loves what he does and he has the human element pouring through his instrument...awesome that he's sharing so much from the heart that's enough man...anything we learn from some one who does what he loves is worth it...please keep going with sharing your great knowledge and passion Tommy ..cheers man
Watching him play makes me smile - amazing.
What a great guitarist, certainly and inspiration, we proud about this humble Australian legend, we most apréciate to share we us your experience of many years, thank mate.
A real gentleman and an ambassador for the style known as travis pickn.
Always gives the fathers the nod for all that lead him to this point. 1 class act
Thank you Mr. Tommy Emmanuel now I can officially say I have taken a short guitar lesson with the worlds greatest living guitar player. Again thank you
Wow just wonderful. I’m not capable of playing it as so wonderfully presented. Just great to see a master show his stuff. ❤️
The difference between playing songs and playing the instrument. I'm envious and in awe!
Incredible! He can do whatever he wants on the guitar. And I love what he does.
It is such a pleasure to listen to him make any sounds from the guitar. He seems to be one with the guitar.
the Master and his Maton . The best with the best here , Thank you Tommy , I feel honoured and will work on your approach
Linda melodia... parabéns professor ...eu amooooo essa canção
This is one of the first songs I learned to play on a guitar.
Absolutely fantastic,
beautifully presented tuition video, 3 simultaneous views and
closeups, nothing left to the imagination. The best I have seen yet.
What else would one expect from Tommy Emmanuel. As a person with
partial sight this is magic for us, thank you Tommy, more like this
one please
The most beautiful version I have heard... goergeous sound!! Going to try it!!
I have watched several vids of Tommy and he always comes over as a very generous player, not precious at all. "Giving credit to fellow players At this level he still seems so enthusiastic and totally in love with the whole science of guitar. A real inspiration. Thanks
He never ceases to amaze me, even with a little ‘basic’ teaching. What a wonderful guitarist.
OH what a great thing to have Tommy Emmanuel!! Thanks
This is the best version of this song I have heard. Thank you so much for taking the time to share it with us.
Thanks Tommy for the tutorial, you are a wonderful soul and it reflects in your music! Thanks !
Tommy is a once in a lifetime, he has influence my playing style and technic a great deal. I keep working on "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" & his harp technic is slowly coming to me. I step away from it and reproach it again and again. This tutorial is a great stepping stone to understand his style and abilities that come so naturally. I don't sing so putting the melody in the mix really works for me. He never bores me with his passion to play I have learned to Travis pick and a great deal more by studying what he does. 820,000 views, awesome! Thanks Tommy!!
I've been playing electric guitar for around 20 years on and off, nothing amazing but I can shred along to pantera and make solos up off the knowledge I've gained over the years, I can play nothing else matters lol. I'm fairly proficient I can get around the neck with a bit of practice you know.
This guy makes it look so easy, what an inspiration.
Wow awesome never seen or heard it played like that. True genius
Just seen Tommy lessons other day mannn wish I had seen them years ago this Travis picking in his other video has totally changed my guitar playing took his advice and taped my fingers down till got the thumb action legendary
sounds superb!
Thank for showing us how to play “House of the Rising Sun”. I could never play that way due to arthritic hands. Still play but with limitations. Love your style, you make the guitar sing.
Just blocked out 20 minutes of practice per day for the next few weeks to get that ending lick and up to speed. Thanks Tommy!
Wow ! This guy is astounding. Thanks Tommy.
excellent, beautiful melody I have no more words to say you are a master
He is such a complete musician.....great!
Yup...old song alright. I learned it back in 1967 the way you first played it... 49 years later I'm still playing it the same way.... thanks for the update!🤔
What I see from Tommy's lessons is the POSSIBLE - he shows what can be done and how to do it. Before I saw his hands at work I thought there might be more than one guitar in the songs, guess not! Wonderful stuff and very generous of Tommy to show us!
Thanks Tommy , this song has so much room for development from when you first play it. What a great American song from the south.
Tommy - I love your presentation. Well done old fella. A great tune and well played. Thanks for teaching us.
Thank you Tommy for the lesson. I've been meaning to learn this style. I've got a lot of work to do but love the sound!
Unbelievably humble man, he has to be if not the best, one of the best guitarists/ musicians ever. Thank you so much sir. I’ll give it my best effort
Great video. I love it a lot. It looks so simple but we keep on going. Thanks Tommie, you are great.
Thanks for your generosity, Mr. E. .Great mythic tune, you have me improvising on it, thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you so much for sharing this lesson! I never looked at this song from your perspective, never thought of even trying to fingerpicking the melody while playing the chords.
Now I feel inspired to do so 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You are too smart for me. Love Chet sound... I love my guitar and the healing of it's tune
Great lesson Tommy. Thank you.
Man...I love this guy....
He does it every time. I'll be right in the middle of learning some really dense new stuff on electric, then I hear him play and I want to drop everything and go back to acoustic. I never finish anything.
Soooooo over my head. Absolutely amazing.
You should watch his intro lesson on finger style. It might help.
Not the place I think, but many thanks for the joyable evening last Sunday in Nijmegen. I invited my dad (92 years old and still playing guitar) and I saw him smile after several month after mam pasted away. Afterwards you were sitting in the entree of the schouwburg and I asked dad if would thank you for the evening. He was to shy ( because he don't understand English) and were walked our way out.
Enjoyed the show.... thnx for the positive influence. 😘
Tommy 'You See That?!' Emmanuel :D
oboyy just as I read this comment he said it 😂
Me too 👍
oboyy chet
oboyy Chet.
So well done Tommy, and now many of us are sitting with very sore fingers and STILL not sounding anything like you!
Lovely lesson and thanks for showing how it should be done!
Cool The master shines through he makes it sound so great
Thanks Tommy what an inspirational musician
A pleasure just to watch and hear your playing.
Genius at work and so godamn amenable
Wish the Egyptians left instructions at least half as good as these instructions from a guitar master. May it live forever for future generations. Tommy Immortal Emmanuel. VERY COOL
This man is so unique ! Love ya tommy thanks for the free lesson!
I was in Canberra in a music shop once and Tommy and Phil were there just picking up guitars on display and playing them - some kind of promo! This’d be at least 30 years ago. Amazing.
Tommy, you are brilliant. Great stuff.
Amazing and breathtaking!
FANTASTIČNO.U RUKAMA MAJSTORA DELUJE PREDIVNO ŠTO DOKAZUJE I VIDEO.BRAVO.
Runtastic Tommy! Love the augmented chord substitution in place of the E7. and when you enter deuce that slide from E flat D, you’re messing around harmonically with the flat five against the a minor chord. In the blues we have that three against a major chord and we have the flat seven rather than the major seven; some think that the inclusion of the flat five (or the enharmonic sharp four) is where jazz Harmony starts to poke it head into the arrangement, along with flat 13th and so on. And of course your slide up to the A minor to replicate the voice was a bit of brilliance - thank you sir!
Absolutely amazing guitarist. 💙 Blues On....
What a fantastic version of this classic hit. I sang house of the rising sun in a school concert when I was a little kid because it was my favourite song at the time. This version is amazing and you sir are a FANTASTIC GUITARIST. Thankyou for putting it on UA-cam. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wee Jim, your comment made me laugh because when I was about 11 I played it for my Grandma and she said, " that song is about a brothel!" And I was so embarrassed because I didnt really know what a brothel was. So I never played it again...for her.
Tommy….you are bloody amazing!
Thankyou so much Tommy for sharing
Thank you Tommy. You are the best!
Thank you for teaching !! Have a good time
