- What are winters like in Reno Nevada? How much snow does Reno get in the winter? And what's it like driving in Reno in the winter; Do you need snow tires? This video gives a brief overview of a few typical winter months in Reno along with a driving tour of winter roads after a winter storm in Reno Nevada.
If you're thinking about moving to Reno Nevada or Northern Nevada and wonder about the weather, then I hope this will help you get a sense of Winter in Reno.

I’m moving to Reno from Las Vegas soon for work, your channel is helping a ton!
Glad to hear it.
I’ve lived in Reno since 1988. And some winters you get practically nothing. But every ten year or so there is a lot of snow. Mid 2000s twelve feet up to the roof line. Early 1990s fifteen feet, I dug a tunnel from the garage door to the street to get outside to play. Some decent years in the 2010s but nothing big to mention. As a high desert it’s always cold and windy but because of natural drought and the planets ever changing climate this area has been getting dryer for the last 2000 years or so. Look on google earth and you will see tons of dry lake beds all over Nevada. Most of Nevada was ancient lake Lahonton . Lush, green and had abundant water. Now it’s just the opposite.
The state fossil the Ichthyosaur found out in the desert was a fish, yes things are ever changing.
Much respect!
The first time I saw lightning strike
I saw it underground
Six deep feet below the street
The sky came crashing down
For a second that place was lost in space
Then everything went black
I left that basement burning
And I never went back
The second time I saw it strike
I saw it at sea
It lit up all the fish like rain
And rained them down on me
For a second that boat was still afloat
Then everything went black
Left it underwater
And I never went back
Hey, hey, hey
But I like it when that lightning comes
Hey, hey, hey
Yes I like it a lot
Hey, hey, hey
Yes, I'm jumping like a jumping jack
I'm dancing, screaming, itching, squealing, fevered
Feeling hot, hot, hot
The third time I saw lightning strike
It hit me in bed
It threw me around
And left me for dead
For a second that room was on the moon
Then everything went black
I left that house on fire
And I never went back
Hey, hey, hey
But I like it when that lightning comes
Hey, hey, hey
Yes I like it a lot
Hey, hey, hey
Yes, I'm jumping like a jumping jack
Dancing, screaming, itching, squealing, fevered
Feeling hot, hot, hot
Hot, hot, hot
Hot, hot, hot
Yep, it's a good song!
The Cure great choice.
Thanks
hi i live there to so it snowed alot and i went sledding lol
I went sledding too. Gotta take advantage of the snow before it melts!
This is exactly why I want to leave Michigan. I hate snow. I love Nevada but maybe I should consider the south like the Vegas area.
Southern NV is great, as long as you're ok with blistering hot summers.
Southern Nevada is a shit hole.. it’s gotten even worse since so many people moved there
Reno is better. Snow in Reno is nothing compared to Michigan. It doesn’t get as freezing. People still wear shorts and tshirt in the winter.
Hello.
Is it snowy right now? Is so, a a little or a lot? We’re looking for an Airbnb not too expensive in a snowy place to stay at. So I’m looking around. 😊
It's snowy in the mountains, but not in the city right now. No snow in the immediate forecast. You could try Truckee Ca or Lake Tahoe if you want snowy.
I’ve see over 3 feet several times on one snow fall, like every ten tears or so.
Reno does get some pretty good dumps of snow now and then. But would you say that the 3 feet of snow you've seen melts off pretty quickly?
Looking to move there from Michigan. Guess I'm not losing out on snow really then lol
A lot of it is melted already and will probably be all gone in a couple of days except for in the mountains. Daily high temps this week are forecasted to be in the mid 40's. I imagine it's colder in Michigan and when it snows probably sticks around for a while?
Not as much and not as cold.
Well, the name of the State where you live is Nevada (Snowy in spanish) So there's no need to ask that question lol
Aun que el estado se llama Nevada, no todos los partes del estado reciban nieve. Por ejemplo, Las Vegas. Pero aqui en Reno, a veces tenemos mucho y a veces poquito. I was always told as a kid in school that Nevada meant snow capped mountains lol : ) I guess that was someone's interpretation.
La verdad yo no entendía muy bien por qué habían nombrado así al Estado, lo único que sé de Nevada es que es un desierto pero ahora que me dices su significado tiene sentido para mí
Does it snow every year?
Yes. It will snow in Reno usually 2 or 3 times a winter. Of course some winters are wetter than others and sometimes we barely get any but it's pretty safe to say that there will be some sort of snow every winter. All the snow from when I made this video a couple of weeks ago is gone and the high temps this week are in the mid 50's and lows at night are down into the 20's.
Does it snow more in Reno or Carson
They're about the same for snow. Elevation is pretty much the same and they are only separated by about 20 miles so most snow storms that come through generally hit both Reno and Carson. Sometimes Reno is hit with more snow and sometimes Carson.
Hi,
Reno experiencing a drought?
Not too bad this year. We had a super wet December so the snow pack was good.
