  • Ready to master the art of the unexpected in the biggest little city in the world? Journey to Reno, Nevada with 1st Look TV guest host Tabitha Lipkin to enjoy all the vibrant sights and fun activities this stunning U.S. destination has to offer!
We kick things off by traveling back in time in Virginia City with resident historian Joe Curtis. After providing Tabitha with a Gold Rush-era dress from the town's original time period, Joe springs into detail about how travelers to this area came more in search of a name instead of a fortune. (You might recognize one of the community's most notorious writers. Ever heard of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain?) Additionally, Joe points out the history behind how, as Reno became more cosmopolitan due the transcontinental railroad, it also transformed into the divorce capital of the nation. Why? Because state law in Nevada says you can remain in the state for 6 weeks and then that gives you citizenship in the state of Nevada. Women would arrive here in search of divorce, toss their rings into the Trucky River, and started developing dude ranches as a result.
This spirit of empowerment leads into the next interview: with Reno mayor Hillary Schieve. The two engage in a delightful conversation about the hilarious show Reno 911, how the city has been revitalized from being primarily a gaming hub into a more cultural destination, as well as what makes Reno such a special and resilient community. Speaking of resilience, Reno is all about embracing environmental friendly activities and outdoor initiatives. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Reno is 30 minutes away from some of the best skiing in the world: Sky Tavern, the oldest nonprofit ski facility in America that helps local children put down their video games and enjoy some fresh air. And in case that wasn't inspirational enough, just over the mountain you'll find the Crystal Blue Waters of Lake Tahoe (the gem of the Sierras) where a small group of dedicated divers called Clean Up the Lake help remove submerged trash from these pristine waters. Tabitha joins both groups for a mountain biking adventure, as well as some scuba diving to lend them a hand and learn about the important work they do to better their communities and get people outside!
After that adventure, Tabitha takes another deep dive: namely, into the rich and interesting history of the Burning Man Festival in the backyard of Reno, Black Rock City. An experience unlike any other, Burning Man brings together a wide range of individuals for a 9-day festival that truly centers around community and artistic self-expression. We’ll hear from Marian Goodell, the CEO of Black Rock City, LLC, who talks about the growth and expansion of the festival and gives some insight on how Reno has played a vital role in the success of Burning Man. We’ll also hear from some artists at The Reno Generator, a facility that provides “Burners” with the necessary resources to create art that not only looks fascinating, but also holds deep meaning to each artist.
As this travel episode of a 1st Look comes to a close, we learn more about Reno's most welcoming aspect. If you ask anyone in Reno what the best part of the city is, they are bound to give you one collective answer: the people! Upon meeting some of the amazing individuals who keep Reno trudging along as “The Biggest Little City in the World,” that statement unquestionably reigns true. Tabitha sits down with Jessica Schneider, the owner of the 15,000 square-foot second-hand store, Junkee, and owner of Noodle Box Kitchen, Parasol Damnerpholkul. The two break down how they have seen the city grow and change over the years that they have been in business there and give some personal insight as to how Reno has truly become a forever home.

Native Californian. I spent a large part of my childhood in Reno and really love it. Wish I would have moved there a long time ago. My son currently plays for the Reno Ice Raiders and it's reaffirmed my love for Reno. Trying to move out there now.
