I never get tired of watching this video, the Who seem to be at their prime. Their vision of Tommy has filled out and matured a bit, it's just great stuff!
Oh boy !!...Billy Idol absolutely mind blowing !..Like all the boys in the band !...Absolutely superb !!...Smashing !..and Simon Phillips devastating !
This was the first of many amazing shows on 89 that i gotto see. Saw then in arrowhead stadium. The turned the place into a giant pinball machine. Watched yhe balll on the screen to have it shoot out of the left screen. Im sure it was 15 feet in diameter. The crowd almost got it out of the stadium. The coolest was when it would run back to the floor it would hit the sound guy, or two of the speaker pods on the floor. When it did they would blink blue, green, or orange and go "ching ching" just like a bally machine. We were blown away. It was an honor and something i will never forget. John Entwistle was beyone compare as were the rest. Live horns, strings, it was majic pure brilliance ... Thanks guys.....
Can you see any band today putting out something like this? Townsend will go down as one of the all time great composers and he was in his 20’s when he wrote this.
The Who were magic hard and cleaver London boys, they epitomised the Mod culture, they proved that quality was actually obtainable and within your own reach , like easy, if you were ready.
Rock music very very close to it's absolute peak here. Townshend's rhythm playing is just phenomenal and Simon Phillips performance wowee! Entwhistle was a phenomenon. What a band!
Tommy the album in my book is the greatest album ever released. This concert is better than a Broadway musical. This shows you the talent and genius ability of The Who.
I loved THE WHO but this is shit - so is your ridiculous statement that it's the greatest album ever released - it's not even the best album by THE WHO... You know nothing.
Pete is incredible ! What energy ! So brillant even in more difficult play of acoustic guitar ! I can listen that all time…obviously, The Who will keep eternal 🎉
I watch this over and over again. 🎶💞😎✌ With tears, smiles and goosebumps everywhere! Because I was there.. At 24 this masterpiece was the last concert I shared with just my 20yo sister. She passed away a year later. The shear power, energy, excitement, and every other emotion with so much incomparable talent on stage with one of the greatest bands of all time bring Tommy to life! I hold this so deep in my heart and soul... There are no words. Thank you so very much for posting this ❤ It was a night I'll NEVER forget.
I was born in 1995 and was raised on The WHO, absolutely love them. Thank you Dad for having the best taste in music and for passing it on to me to enjoy and appreciate. Keep rocking people of UA-cam! 🔥🙌🤘👍👏💖🎶🔥
Yep The Gen Y kids who found Dad’s stacks of LPs in cardboard boxes in the wardrobe and thumbed through them were the reinforcements of the 60s - 70s Baby Boomer Rock Army
As magnificent this performance of the Rock Opera Tommy is, there is another... The Who's Quadrophenia. Not necessarily better, but lends credence to the genius of these '70s rockers who did it all!
Anyone else remember when this was on live TV in ‘89? It was on whatever Fox channel was back then…and for us drummers, this was a veritable drum clinic from the great Simon Phillips. And I recorded this on, of course, VHS and wore it out playing and replaying this all the time…until this finally came out as a DVD box set (sans TV commercials…hallelujah!) and companion booklet. This never gets old…even 33 years later. Sadly we’re only missing one out of the entire cast…the great John Entwistle…whose lightning fast fingers on bass will never be duplicated. Don’t believe me? Go to 12:30 in the song The Amazing Journey and just watch his solo…especially his left hand all over the fret board. Are you kidding me??? Was lucky to have seen the last show of this tour at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas as part of Randy Quaid’s “Greatest Party Ever” promotion that ran all summer long in those Miller Light TV ads. They did Tommy and their hits…albeit with none of the guest singers…just The Who with the back-up singers, the percussionist, Simon Phillips, the keyboardist, the horn section, and the electric guitarist (filling in due to Pete’s hearing issues back then while Pete played acoustic guitar…but during their hits section, Pete played an electric). Phenomenal show.
Give Tash Sultana a listen - Tash is a full power rock band with a brass section and a vocal range of six octaves...in my 55+ years of concert-going, noting like them in terms of musical genius speaking their own truth...
Plus de 50 ans et cette musique me met toujours la chair de poule tellement c’est puissant. Je ne la trouve pas vieillie ... peut-être parce que j’aime !
I love Tommy, I bought as soon as it was released. I had the great pleasure of seeing The Who, with Kieth Moon, in 1976, at the Oakland Stadium, I was right up front and Roger Daltry glistened like a Greek God. They played Tommy all the way through, then all of Who’s Next, and all their old hits, My Generation, Magic Bus, etc, and of course Kieth and Pete smashed the shit out of the stage at the end!! It was epic, will never forget ❤
Une époque où les compositions ne reposaient pas que sur 3 accords, une voix véritable et sans sampler, de l'interprétation pure et véritable, c'est tellement devenu rare que ça manque!
I was 12 when the Vh1 channel had a Who weekend to celebrate their 25th anniversary (if I'm remembering right). They showed nothing but Who videos for 3 days including the film version of Tommy, the Shea Stadium concert from 82 and this concert. I recorded as I much as I could to vhs tapes and watched them religiously for years. This takes me back to those times. Love it.
If he hadn't been a coke addict an alcoholic and a heavy smoker he might still be with us today. What a waste of a great talent. I met him in 1999 at an art signing he had put on in Clayton, MO. I shook his hand and it felt like shaking hands with a corpse. He was very weak and much older looking at that time than he actually was. He did not look well and it was only a few years later that he passed.
Best version of Tommy they ever did live. Nice to hear it with horns, keyboards, background singers, etc. The guest stars are all pretty good, and Simon Phillips is outstanding on drums!
Absolutely love The Who and this is a classic performance. My first view of them aged 16, was in Woodstock singing Free Me, I was forever held in awe of them. To this day aged 72 I'm still a huge fan. The other performers in here I love too. Rock On The Who!!!! Love you bigtime all the way from Australia :)
I watched this on TV live. I am a 64 year old man. I grew up in North Philly. I saw THE WHO 5 times. I saw a lot of great rock bands. THE WHO is the greatest rock band ever. The greatest
At 59 something LaBelle brings America back in and I have to stop it to get air. There are no words to describe the Black American Genius. The notes are from above the clouds. My dad took me to a jazz club in Detroit when I was a kid and I just implode myself how she can channel it. Believe people.
I fucking love watching Simon Phillips play this music. I remember when I was 13 and this came on ABC on Prime Time TV. My parents refused to watch it but let me record it on our VHS. I wore this tape out watching it over and over and over. I remember being a little disappointed that Pete basically played none of the leads, but Entwistle and Simon Phillips made up for it. This was the first time I wanted to be a drummer, and I’m still play almost every day. Thanks Simon.
Simon is awesome - a monster drummer who never gets the credit he deserves. Moon is irreplaceable, but Phillips is so technically good. He's about as good as you're gonna get as a fill-in... I like Starky, but he's a bit lazy on the kit. He doesn't play half of the fills Moonie (and Simon) did, and it ruins some of the songs.
Patti Labelle absolutely destroyed it on acid queen. Her vovals were unbelievable. She was able to raise the roof on the place at the closing with her fill and give it a rock gospel swing.
Wow yes. I think even the Ox cracked a smile of recognition for her. Pete, Roger and everyone else did. I love Tina, but my God. Pattie IS the Acid Queen. Her voice puts all these modern, little clad songsters to their knees.
So many mixed comments about Keith Moon at this concert. Real sad that true Who fans do not remember that the greatest Rock drummer passe away in 1978 - he was there in spirit. RIP Keith
Définitively '' Tommy'' is the best pop music opera since the year 1969 We have the opportunity to meet at this concert the composer Peter Townsen who play too the conductor and too the leader guitar That is the level of Leonard Bernstein with ' 'West Side Story' ' in the 50's This Who' s opera is becoming a classical one Congratulations Victor Kowalyk 03300 Cusset (, France)
My wonderful sister bought the original vinyl of this. I spent hours and hours listening to it in absolute amazement sitting by my parents stereogram. It is very special to me and always will be. This concert is incredible, share it for others to enjoy!
It came out in '69 but I didn't know about it until '74 when my brother bought it second hand as back then we could only afford second hand albums in the record shop. Then the following year the film came out in cinemas though I only saw it on TV to begin with until it came to the local art centre four years ago.
The albim is my all time favorite! My 8th grade science teacher played it, explaining each sequence in relation to our studies on mental illness. I begged my mother for it.i still have that album, as well as cassette, CD, and electronic.
This is the concert that me a Who fan. The Vocals from Roger, windmills from Pete, and The Ox tearing it on bass and the incredible drumming from Simon as they tore it up. Add on the Rabbit and Steve Bolton, this is by far the best live performance I have ever seen.
This concert is running complete 2.15 hour. Its the best concert from the Who all times. Never was the voice from Roger Daltrey better. Recordet in Los Angeles, University Amphitheater, during of their US Tour 1989. It was a benefit concert. I buy this concert on VHS tape. It is one of my Favourite live Musik what i have. Hear it so many times and love It more and more. CMV Enterprises bring it on VHS tape in Fully Digital Video and Audio recording. 35 Songs and all so very strong and perfekt. (faszinierend). was
Tommy is not my favorite Who album but this is outstanding! Truly Pete is a great rhythm and acoustic guitar player! I'm glad he brought horns from the Deep End too. I'm glad Simon Phillips is playing drums. I really like the guy.
I'm still crying in awe! Such magnificence!! I'm in a dunny in Brisbane testing out these new earphones I just bought, and am blown away! I opened the packet before entering the loos. I'm so blown away I'm not getting off the dunny anytime soon. How sick is that? Sick as in disgusting. A 55 year old rocking out on an Ozi dunny to Tommy live is probably not something these guys envisioned when Pete wrote this. Yes disgusting but I just couldn't take my eyes off the footage or pause the music. Oh fuck oh fuck!! The finale!!! Oh fuck Pattie!! (Sorry for the fks kids...) OK it ended and I'm in a public dunny with surrounding shops at a train station. Guess what was playing in the background when this clip ended and I finally came out of the cubicle? Behind Blue Eyes! How bizarre is that? Not Pete's original but just wow. I am one sick individual. RIP Mooney! RIP My Ox. I apologise to all the bassists on Earth who will never reach his skill. What a man. Roger, just wow as usual. Pete, Pete. A genius who in my little opinion was criticised despicably. The man deserves bows. He is a legend. My God!!
I am a classic rocker who never really cared for The Who. But in 1989, just a day or two before this concert, I got to see The Who. I won the tickets and a trip to New York City to see them perform Tommy in its entirety at Radio City Music Hall. For me, the trip was the better part. In fact, the night of the concert, I tried to sell my ticket for the face price. Well, I had second row seats and each ticket was $450. I had a few approach me and once they saw the price of the ticket, they said no way. So, I was stuck with the ticket and I went to the show. To this day, I am so glad that no one bought my ticket. This turned out to be the third best concert I ever saw, and I have seen many. The sound was so clean, the band so energized, and just everything about the show was top notch. When I got back home, I won tickets and a trip once again to see The Who at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. So a month after seeing them in NY, I saw them again in San Diego. Of course the stadium show was nowhere near as good as the show in NY, but I had a great time nonetheless.
How lucky must you be to win tickets to see the Who not just once, but twice! Hope you enjoyed and cherish your experience and the memories that come with them friend. Keep rocking!

Flat out amazing! The Isle of Wight show from 1970 is the best live performance I have ever seen by any band, but this is up there amongst my favorites. Simon Phillips is the best possible fill in for Keith in his prime except of course for Keith in his prime. Good gosh this is awesome.
utterly stunning in its power, beauty, lyricism and melodies. One of the greatest musical accomplishments in rock history! (BTW, Simon Phillips is one heck of a drummer!)
This was pretty damned amazing, especially the Overture in the beginning where Townshend is just a machine. Between the releases of "The Joshua Tree" and "Nevermind" there was a brief period of very polished, guitar-driven, borderline-metal hard rock (see also Living Colour and Jane's Addiction). And while I'm sure some purists balked at the time, seeing the material from "Tommy" performed in line with that era's production values really DID fit it like a glove.
Roger Daltrey is one of the most sexiest men in rock and roll. I think he is still hot, even today, at age 72. Hubba, hubba! Anyway, I think THE WHO is the best band in the world. I even have their logo tattooed on my right forearm. I am a HUGE fan. I love this concert so much. Thanks to whomever uploaded this brilliant performance. I am going to see them in concert on May 15th, 2016, at Key Arena. I am so excited!
I love watching Billy during the finale running around like everybody in the audience would like to be doing. Up there among those living legends. When Pete waved billy over to to share his mic I had a total fangasm.

I never get tired of watching this video, the Who seem to be at their prime. Their vision of Tommy has filled out and matured a bit, it's just great stuff!
One of my favourite versions of Tommy. It sounds so much more robust and alive than the original AND STILL INCREDIBLE album.
Oh boy !!...Billy Idol absolutely mind blowing !..Like all the boys in the band !...Absolutely superb !!...Smashing !..and Simon Phillips devastating !
Amazing players, perfect audio mixing and recording. Maybe best concert recorded audio I've ever heard.
Live horns, strings, it was majic pure brilliance
... Thanks guys.....
Can you see any band today putting out something like this? Townsend will go down as one of the all time great composers and he was in his 20’s when he wrote this.
No band can play like this today's band make all their sounds from computers and recording
He set a precedence for other bands such as Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman and Emerson, Lake and Palmer to follow with their concept albums.
Incapable
The Who were magic hard and cleaver London boys, they epitomised the Mod culture, they proved that quality was actually obtainable and within your own reach , like easy, if you were ready.
Only ABBA and partly Queen
Very very very good, one of the best albums, ever 😎😎😎
Rock music very very close to it's absolute peak here.
Townshend's rhythm playing is just phenomenal and Simon Phillips performance wowee! Entwhistle was a phenomenon. What a band!
My brother took me to see them the day after i got out of of boot camp. Drafted! My momma raised no dummies!!!!! I was crying with my shaved head!!;;
Are you joking?
@@EPA18 why would he be joking lmfao
Well, it’s certainly one of them.
I saw Tommy on Broadway, actors singing and creating the scenes, big orchestra.
Pete is incredible ! What energy ! So brillant even in more difficult play of acoustic guitar ! I can listen that all time…obviously, The Who will keep eternal 🎉
I was at this concert; it remains my absolutely favorite concert experience...
so lucky bro
I saw it from the 5th row in Dallas.
Hey no way that's not something to be joking about basement boy
I watch this over and over again. 🎶💞😎✌
With tears, smiles and goosebumps everywhere!
Thank you so very much for posting this ❤
It was a night I'll NEVER forget.
Whoever put this up, made a lot of us Boomers proud beyond measure!! Boundless appreciation
I was born in 1995 and was raised on The WHO, absolutely love them. Thank you Dad for having the best taste in music and for passing it on to me to enjoy and appreciate. Keep rocking people of UA-cam! 🔥🙌🤘👍👏💖🎶🔥
Yep
The Gen Y kids who found Dad’s stacks of LPs in cardboard boxes in the wardrobe and thumbed through them were the reinforcements of the 60s - 70s Baby Boomer Rock Army
I do remember exactly where I was when I watched this. It just blew my mind. Simon is such a beast!
Townshend-Daltrey-Entwistle + Moon - best Rock Band ever. No other Band ever reached that level of musical power and energy.
that band was wielded like a weapon
led zeppelin did but i get your point
Give Tash Sultana a listen - Tash is a full power rock band with a brass section and a vocal range of six octaves...in my 55+ years of concert-going, noting like them in terms of musical genius speaking their own truth...
@@richardcolton1009love that
Zeppelin more than matched them they surpassed them
Plus de 50 ans et cette musique me met toujours la chair de poule tellement c’est puissant. Je ne la trouve pas vieillie ... peut-être parce que j’aime !
It was Entwhistle's bass which made me a WHO fan for life. Standing virtually STILL and churning out those bass heavy numbers was a treat.
Great concert, The who are without doubt one of the greatest rock bands ever
Watching Simon Phillips in this performance inspired me to be a drummer. Probably hundreds of others as well.
For me, The Who is the best Rock Band Ever.
@carlosmalaga7013 FOR ME....TOOOO!
Love it.
Listening this demonstrates how essential Entwistle was to the whole SONIC sound...he is so missed.
@@goodwilj What a sad and terrible loss. No one can fill his shoes with The Who. As I understand, he knew that he had a bad heart.
@@goodwilj I agree!!!!!
Totally
Like having a 747 on full throttle the whole flight
The epitome of inconspicuous presence - and all the powerful because of it
Best version of Tommy they ever did live. Nice to hear it with horns, keyboards, background singers, etc. The guest stars are all pretty good, and Simon Phillips is outstanding on drums!
Jhensy2012 die hard who fans call this tour, " the who on ice" personally I think Tommy needs horns, keys, etc
Check out the live version from Tanglewood in 1970. Video is vintage 1970 (not great) but the band (including Keith Moon) was tight and awesome.
Aaahhh ...dear Simon Philips 🙏!!!
There was no better replacement for Moonie than Simon..
Indeed
Great drumming and that's the most powerful ending to show EVER!
Hi Hun. I'm rewatching this too. You went to Woodstock?? I'm envious.🇦🇺
I was 15 and my big brother would'nt take me along with his girlfriend. totally understandable.
You were at Woodstock? I thought that I knew you!!
Love THE WHO, and The Who lovers, DEAR Margaret ♥️🎀🌹.
I'm born în '53 and i' m young😅😂👍LONG live to THE WHO lovers🏆
I watched this on TV live. I am a 64 year old man. I grew up in North Philly. I saw THE WHO 5 times. I saw a lot of great rock bands. THE WHO is the greatest rock band ever. The greatest
@JimWelsh-f6l ABSOLUTLELY AGREE WITH YOU!
Ladies and gentlemen the best rock ‘n’ roll band in the world .
The ending is triumphant.
I too recorded this on VHS and watched it one day I stayed home sick from school. It’s a masterpiece!
This production is amazing! The guest artists are top notch!:)
The acid Queen was performed by TINA TURNER.
@@joaovilaca4204 Tina did originally. But in this one it's Patty.
@@joaovilaca4204 So you did not just watch this concert clip???
Best Acid Queen ever!!!
INCREDIBLE! I really feel Simon brings so much to this concert, wish he had carried on with them more over the years...
This show is probably the best case of a rock opera.
So many mixed comments about Keith Moon at this concert. Real sad that true Who fans do not remember that the greatest Rock drummer passe away in 1978 - he was there in spirit. RIP Keith
Even on the acoustic, Townsend is absolutely amazing. Punk Rock.
TOWNSHEND. The uploader got it wrong and so did you. That is so disrespectful!
Définitively '' Tommy'' is the best pop music opera since the year 1969
We have the opportunity to meet at this concert the composer Peter Townsen who play too the conductor and too the leader guitar
That is the level of Leonard Bernstein with
' 'West Side Story' ' in the 50's This Who' s opera is becoming a classical one
Congratulations
Victor Kowalyk 03300 Cusset (, France)
Entwistle at roughly 12:54 is so much fun! The Ox is unique and other bass players are often in awe.
This concert is a masterpiece of rock ! The Who are a masterpiece !
This kicks ass... would've loved to see Simon stay on with The Who. 🥁🎼
Throughout Thunderfingers never missed a beat. Best bassist ever.
Great concert! Patti LaBelle killed that song and totally destroyed the stage! A true vocal powerhouse!!!🔥🔥🔥
even though she couldn't be bothered to really learn the song?
@@weedywet She sang the heck out of the song and didn't miss a beat. Pure talent!
@@KD-yh8gg missed words. Screwed up the rhymes. Couldn’t be bothered to know it.
I bought the vynil, the tape, the CD ... and I am watching this video ! Autrement dit, j’aime !
This is the concert that me a Who fan. The Vocals from Roger, windmills from Pete, and The Ox tearing it on bass and the incredible drumming from Simon as they tore it up. Add on the Rabbit and Steve Bolton, this is by far the best live performance I have ever seen.
Simon Phillips on drums is soooo awesome‼️
This concert is running complete 2.15 hour. Its the best concert from the Who all times. Never was the voice from Roger Daltrey better. Recordet in Los Angeles, University Amphitheater, during of their US Tour 1989. It was a benefit concert. I buy this concert on VHS tape. It is one of my Favourite live Musik what i have. Hear it so many times and love It more and more. CMV Enterprises bring it on VHS tape in Fully Digital Video and Audio recording. 35 Songs and all so very strong and perfekt. (faszinierend).

Tommy is not my favorite Who album but this is outstanding! Truly Pete is a great rhythm and acoustic guitar player! I'm glad he brought horns from the Deep End too. I'm glad Simon Phillips is playing drums. I really like the guy.
John Entwistle, one of the best.. RIP!!
The world would be an emptier place without Tommy. Patti really brought down the church at the end.
ELTON JOHN. PHIL COLLINS. PATTI LABELLE.
THIS CONCERT KICKS ASS!! 😃😃😃
(Sorry for the fks kids...)
OK it ended and I'm in a public dunny with surrounding shops at a train station.
Makes me have to ask what were the 2 shows that bested this?
@@ronnelson7283 Number one was Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Thomas and Mack Center ( 2002 ). Number two was Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush in a small bar called Krackers also in Vegas ( 1989 ).
JUST FUCKING INCREDIBLE! No words for this genius of a band. Just overwhelmed after all these years by this performance.
Amazing bass playing. Seems like he's not making any effort and it comes so easy for him.
This is Rock!!! and you have the Queen of Rock and Soul PATTI LABELLE
Loving this star studded live version of Tommy. Have just seen The Who live in Durham, 2023 and they still do a superb set list. ❤
It's my understanding that the band is only touring in the UK-?🤔
I saw them do this in Philly. It was a religious experience. One of the best nights of my life.
Was at that show too! Nice to meet you :) I sat in the very last row of the stadium, directly opposite the stage, and my ears were still ringing! Forever grateful to the musicians 🕯️
Pete's masterpiece of all time. There will never be another album like this. Absolutely awesome🎸💯👍
This is great. I haven't seen this concert since it aired on TV in 1989.
Flat out amazing! The Isle of Wight show from 1970 is the best live performance I have ever seen by any band, but this is up there amongst my favorites. Simon Phillips is the best possible fill in for Keith in his prime except of course for Keith in his prime. Good gosh this is awesome.
Cool I will look that up. I just saw this for first time can't believe I didn't 'get' the band when I was 22 or so
I was at Woodstock when The Who played this........a place in time I will never forget 47 years ago now!
You and a half million of your closest friends, huh?
Rock geniuses, especially 'Simon Phillips' behind the drums paying total respect to the late great 'Keith Moon'.
pete townsed is the mozart of our time
My sister took me to see this movie when I was a kid...it profoundly changed and shaped my perspective of music to this day...
Saw The Who twice in the early 80s but didn't get to see the Tommy show. Wow,thanks for this. What a way to start the day.
utterly stunning in its power, beauty, lyricism and melodies.
My favourite concert of all time. This is what got me into music from the age of 3 I was singing this into plastic bottles pretending I was roger
Wow! My only regret is that this wasn't recorded in 4K but considering it was performed in 1989 it's understandable. But the music was BRILIANT!!
Was soll man da noch sagen...ein geniales Werk, aufgeführt von genialen Musikern. The Who simply at their best...Danke dafür!!!
I love watching Billy during the finale running around like everybody in the audience would like to be doing. Up there among those living legends. When Pete waved billy over to to share his mic I had a total fangasm.
A fangasm !,... is that pissing your pants ??
