Ears can become clogged for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, this is due to air pressure changes in the environment from changing elevation while driving or flying. However, there are a number of different reasons that your ears can feel clogged including having a sinus infection or something even more serious.
This clogged sensation is often caused by your Eustachian Tube not opening and passing air through to your middle ear space. This causes a negative pressure that gives you the perception of clogged ears and sometimes pain. Swallowing typically opens the Eustachian Tube, but doesn't work all of the time.
Getting your ears to unclog can be difficult for some individuals. Here are 5 ways you can unclog your ears when swallowing isn't enough.
1. Valsalva Maneuver - This is where you simply plug your nose and try to blow air out of it.
2. Lowry Method - This is where you combine the Valsalva Maneuver with swallowing at the same time.
3. Yawning - Sometimes simply yawning will open the Eustachian Tube just enough to let air pass through.
4. Having someone blow in your nose - Forcing air through your nose while swallowing can push air through your Eustachian Tube, however this can be dangerous if a person is doing it...and it's gross!
5. Using the Eustachi - The Eustachi is a tool that gently pushes air through your nostril while you swallow. This pushes air through the Eustachian Tube gently and can unclog even the most stubborn ears.

If these methods don't work there could be other reasons for your clogged ears.
1. Earwax impaction - This is where earwax plugs up your outer ear.
2. Fluid - If your middle ear is filled with fluid, you may need medical treatment to fix it. One option is to have Pressure Equalization (PE) tubes inserted into your eardrum.
3. Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) - This condition is very serious and often only gives the perception of being clogged in one ear. Treatment of this condition is extremely time sensitive and you should see an Audiologist immediately.

I have a Eustachi and it is. Life saver! I almost always have Eustachian tube dysfunction with colds and it tends to cause my a lot of anxiety but the Eustachi works to get my ears unclogged. Sometimes I have to use it a few times in a row and if my ear is really stuck then I take a big sip of water to swallow as I use it and that almost always does the trick!
Tilting my heading to the side and shaking vigorously (while hoping brain connections and brain blood vessels don't get ripped to shreds in the process).

Some tips:
1. Go in ☀️. It is a possibility that you are having cold.
2. Do the exercise that is in this video
3. Wait. Be composed and calm. You will get back your hearing ability after few days. It's absolutely fine.

It’s a blessing to be able to have relief and hear when your Eustachian tube clogs up! I have fluid on my eardrum after a bad case of the flu, and it made it to where I had pressure on my left ear, a feeling of fullness and conductive hearing loss…always be GRATEFUL and THANKFUL that you can hear, see, observe, eat, drink, bathe and shower on your own. Life is good.

Hey guys! As of right now, my RIGHT ear is now clogged. Left one unclogged about a week after I got some strong meds (Flonase, prednisone, Zyrtec and mucinex) Unfortunately, the only thing we can do when this is happening is to wait. The meds don’t work right away, but they will work if they’re what you need. So if you have congestion AND ear fullness/dulled hearing, you likely need Flonase or some corticosteroid nasal spray, prednisone and possibly other meds.
Think positive thoughts (as hard as it may be, this WILL somewhat help) and work with your doctor.

Just came here to say you helped save my hearing. I found this video when trying to figure out why my ear just "shut off" 50% of my hearing on my left side... Your tag at the end to see a doc in case it was SSHL was what I needed to "hear" for sure. I was at my PCP 3 days after the loss who started me on steroids... 5 days later I was at an ENT who did a full eval and confirmed SSHL. I had the steroid shot in my eardrum and happy to say 2 weeks later my hearing has nearly returned to normal. Only a slight remnant of loss remains. Super thankful for your video! Doc told me she was treating 2 other patients that have been without hearing for 4 months due to SSHL that came in too late for treatment. I don't go to the doc often... glad I did this time instead of figuring it'd pass. 1 in 5,000 people experience SSHL every year... not the lottery I wanted to win, but hey, at least I overcame it! Thanks again!

I overreacted about having a clogged left ear, I debated that there was some ear wax stuffed near to my eardrum. I finally came up with an idea that my ear was clogged because I had a cold over the weekend and it has happened before for a day, so I think that is what is happening. I think everyone gets this its okay if you do, you're not alone dear♥️

Old natural treatment is very warm olive oil. Position your head sideways and place five or six drops of heated olive oil into ear (don't put dropper inside the ear!), hold your head sideways for five minutes. It will help melt wax and lubricate the ear canal. . After hold head up , let the oil out, wipe up and use a little hydrogen peroxide to finish cleaning up.
If you're still having pain it may be a middle ear infection and you need to see a doctor.

Sleep with a hat on, that covers your ears. Keep your head warm. Especially, if you sleep with a lot of forced air in the room.

The second one! I have struggled with this for years! After I fly I typically get blocked ears and only a 'real' yawn unblocks. A forced one won't do it. But that method with the swallow - absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much!

same problem here my right ear seemed to be clogged up and blocked if i wake up from sleeping on that side but minutes later it will be normal again but can hear the wax parting like what sounds like static
i tried cleaning my ears with cotton buds ( Q-tips if ya american ) but seemed to have clogged up my ear solid now had tried the warm water approach and failed and then tried the hydrogen peroxide a few drops of that in my ear cleared it and got about 70 to 80% hearing back in that ear
but now its clogged up again but this time its painful now i can hear my heart beating in my ear so annoying and whats worse is the side of my face close to my ear had swollen
so now trying a warm compress well at least as hot as i can tolerate and pop some amoxci and an advil pain reliever to at least kill the pain and the amoxi to combat if any infection there
pain has eased off its just now an annoying problem with the heart beating sound and the hum in the drum and the feeling of that swelling uncomfortable
on a slightly positive note at least when the girlfriend is being noisy having a clogged ear has its advantages

@@leehawk7068 DON'T USE Q-TIPS. I cleaned my ears with them yesterday, both equally. My left ear was fine but my right one felt clogged and muffled, it's still not gone. After that, I learned that Q-Tips are not supposed to be used for ears... I learned the hard way!!

I’m going to leave this vent here. I used to love swimming so much, I went underwater all the time and never had any problems. One day, I was having a shower ,as normal, and water got clogged in my ear. I was so scared and I panicked. It eventually went away after a few days but I regularly got it whenever I had a bath or shower. I haven’t put my ears underwater for over a year now and I’m petrified about doing it. Anyway, last year I got a really bad cold. It clogged up my sinuses and I felt horrible. It caused a bunch of wax to form and you couldn’t see my eardrums. I eventually got it sucked out though. I felt great for a few months, but I started to make myself paranoid. I was constantly putting my fingers in my ears, always thinking there was something wrong. Today is 3 days before my birthday and I woke up, put my finger in my left ear, and clogged it somehow. Why does my life have to be like this :( I’m trying to remain positive, I have so much respect for permanently deaf people, they are true warriors. Keep going guys

I had the same thing happen for me. I had a terrible sinus infection which clogged up my ears. Thankfully I should be getting them cleared out soon but I’m sorry yours returned that’s horrible.
I always do this. Get some water and put about two drops of dawn dish liquid in it. The. Get a spoon and stir it so it’s kinda soapy and tilt your head put the soapy water in hold it there for about 20min then get your ear and tilt your head so it all leaks out. Put your thumb over your ear and shake it as if your trying to get something out. You might have to repeat but I’m telling you it works. Earwax always been my enemy and it has always clogged my hearing. And this trick helped break down the wax and get it out of my ear. You might have to shake your dinner like 3 or 4 times then stop to see if you can hear. The only way I say absolutely do not use the trick is if you have pain and swelling or and obvious ear infection. This is for wax removal clogging your hearing only! And you will know what I mean. If u stick something in their and push the wax it’s obvious. If you mysteriously wake up and can’t hear that is something I would see a doctor for. I know these things drive us crazy so please everyone be safe when trying to tips and tricks. Best thing if possible is to see a doctor

Does anyone else experience this? Whenever my right ear is blocked, my left ear becomes very sensitive to noise to the point where even medium volume sounds can cause it to hurt. I should note that my left ear is more sensitive to noise than my right ear a little bit normally. Has anyone else experienced their non-blocked ear becoming more sensitive?
I have the same, my left ear is clogged and damn sensitive, i have visited 3 docotors now and everybody is clueless..
Also have the issue, it is hyperacusis in both ears. My own voice also vibrates, buzzes my hearing which is terrible. Doctors are no help with explanation. Sometimes worse accompanied buy sinus stuffinous. A real curse neural hearing loss!

Hi doctor cliff, I have had a ear blocked with wax since August 2021 and has not disappeared fully at all. One of the main causes of my ear being blocked with wax is: I went underwater for too long that day and realised in the morning I had a tiny bit of partial hearing loss. We went to the doctors the very same day, we never actually saw a doctor in the end as the hospital we went to was extremely busy that day. We did however visit our local doctors (as we were on holiday when it happened) and they said I would need to have it flushed out with a syringe filled with water if it didn't improve. It did slightly improve following this appointment and the treatment was no longer necessary. My full hearing (actually about 98%) came and went over the months until I went swimming again (😶) and a tiny bit of water entered MY left ear (my in caps for reference) and because it was mostly wax in my ear still, the water had left my ear quite quickly this time. The last few months of 2022 with the issue was OK, sort of, mostly lol. But very recently it has blocked again and I think a few days before writing this, a tiny tiny bit of water went in my left ear 😐 Also, just prior to writing this, I yawned so much it has made my left ear sound extremely muffled when I touch the outside of it. My right ear, hasn't to too bad to be honest however I think it was effected in the slightest both times I went swimming.

Left has been feeling clogged since sunday april 9 2023. Writing this comment on 4/16/2023. At first it was slight n itchy and annoying. I tried scratching the outter area n a bit of dark wax came out. Then it became more painful for about 3 days. I tried drops for swimmers ear, wax type things. It did end the pain for the most part but didnt unclog. I tried also a wax cleaning kit (1 time if im being honest). Yet it didnt seem to help either. Idk if I need to try it several times. Its not really painful anymore but just feels blocked and hearing is diminished on the left side. Right feels fine. Having to ask my family for assistance to pay for medical help, as since I live in the US and am poor...in the eyes of the system, I clearly dont deserve to have basic medical care. Its really upsetting and the anxiety goes up the longer this goes on. This video is old n im not seeking actual medical advice from Dr Cliff, with this comment. Just needed to say something though to let out some stress, for he sake of my sanity.
Update: With financial assistance from my family I was able to go to urgent care for it. Was fungal blockage and had some scratches in ear. They flushed out the blockage, n perscribed antibiotics. Feels much better now. Doc said I should be able to hear normally in around 2 hours or so, as of 4/16/2023 10:20am

@@kpoojitha4880 Actually, for a bit it felt that way but the blocked feeling returned. They gave me anti-biotics but when I googled it, what I found said anti b dont really help with a fungal issue. So not sure if that will help it. Not sure what to do but keep trying ear drops n use the Anti B.
The doc who did cleaning procedure didnt seem at all concerned with the stuff that came out of my ear. So at first I thought its not an issue but now idk. Id imagine if it was serious I would have been told something.
I really didn't fix my clogged ears (I guess I'll just have to wait until it goes away naturally) however, I'm glad to know that I'm not alone.

Thanks doc. Your video is a relief for me. I had a bacterial infection in my right ear some days back, am in the middle of completing my antibiotics course given by my ENT specialist and freaked out before this video as my left ear started paining. I was imagining worse things but your video was reassuring. It helped me understand the ear tube and it's function better. I'll go see my ENT specialist tomorrow.

I am a respiratory care practitioner and have had constantly popping clogged ears. I saw your vid and used an alternate bower. It was unbelievably successful. It lasted two days or felt like it was starting to come back. Thanks

Thank you Dr. Olson for the expert and simple advice. My ears were clogged from a common cold and I had a slight fever. Suddenly, the fever subsided and my ears still felt clogged. From my world of now past silence..thank you, thank you, thank you. I am truly amazed. After living with the frustration of debilitating deafness for nearly 5 years, I alternated both methods one and two for two minutes and voila, I'm certain that I can hear; wiggly worms in the ground; spiders walking by; the beating wings of birds; and the clouds passing by. Im not ashamed to reveal, such made me cry uncontrolably. I now have to tell my family, friends and work colleagues to stop shouting at me. Same, it wasn't hurting in the beginning, then I tried tk fix it myself, then it was hurting for a few days, and now it's not hurting. I *might* be going deaf-

what worked for me was using the valsalva maneuver but also holding my hand over my clogged ear to create a vaccum at the same time so basically.
1. Pinch your nose and close your mouth
2. Put a hand over your clogged ear to create a tight seal
3. Blow out of your nose
4. When you feel your clogged ear pop you must under no circumstances stop blowing air immediately. You have to slowly stop blowing air instead.
This worked for me. I just decided to try it at one point and that's what worked. I hope it can help some people

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!! I just unclogged my left plugged-up ear. I had flu a few days back and my left ear got plugged up. I panicked and it's really causing me a bad headache (left portion of my head). I tried doing the first technique where you cover your nose and blow. It hurts a little bit but then it's OK now. Yes, I had this. It's called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. (ETD). My ENT told me to use 2 nasal sprays in both ears twice daily, and I have to do it for the rest of my life. One is OTC Flonase. I buy the Sam's Club Member's Mark brand. The flonase is one pump per nostril twice daily. After inserting the tip into your nose, tilt the bottle towards the outside of your nostril, which means it is aiming for the Eustachian tube, then spray the pump bottle. Repeat in your other nostril. The other nasal spray is an antihistamine and is a prescription called Azelestine. You spray twice in each nostril twice daily. This has kept my Eustachian tubes functioning perfectly for the last couple of years that I've been doing this.
@@Artistofmysoul1 Seems strange. Any ENT or pharmacist I have talked to has said that we absolutely should NOT use those nasal sprays long term. Any pharma website gives the same warning. They quickly create what is called a rebound effect, and pretty much guarantee that your situation will become worse, and stay that way. Telling someone to use these products long-term, and daily, is like telling someone to keep taking heroin or cocaine every day, as a solution to their withdrawal effects from the day before. If the nasal sprays are merely saline, that is another story.
Plugging my nose, blowing, and swallowing did it for me. Had my ear clogged for over a month due to congestion. I was getting worried about it. Thanks Doc!! I can finally hear.
