  • Johnny turned out for a showing of his documentary 'Evidently John Cooper Clarke' - graced us with three poems and did a question and answer session at the end. Apologies for any shaking of the camera - that would be me laughing so hard!

I think every word he says qualifies as poetry - difficult to tell when the act starts and finishes

First time I heard him uncensored was on the Funhouse Show on KPFT 90.1 in Houston. Instantly addicted

I met him once, and had a long and interesting chat about Manchester in the late 70's that included Joy Division and Nico. It was back in 85 during what he calls his lost years. He is a lovely man, very friendly, witty, a raconteur. Its was, in the back of beyond, in a provincial town and after one of his gigs and he was looking for a place to crash. He will not remember me I'm sure but the thing that struck me, not just his stick thin physique and the hair but also his ability to, chameleon like, get on with complete strangers, even though incongruously, he looks nothing like most people. Very much your great British eccentric.

He strikes me as someone who thinks he's more intelligent and witty and eloquent than he really is.
This set is simply your classic old-man 'I hate my wife' jokes, a dying genre and thank goodness.
