You forgot to mention that unlike the movies, Ginny had a personality, a fun one at that in the Books.

To be fair Ginny is pretty two-dimensional in the books. But the movies definitely killed her character completely

YES I love book Ginny, she actually blossomed and wasn't awkward, she was also quite like Fred and George, remember "HE GOT OFF, HE GOT OFF" and then Molly telling them to tune it down and they just continue with "he got off, he got off" in a whisper. My friends that only saw the movie Ginny, didn't like her and didn't understand why Harry liked Ginny

Honestly Ginny was the best of all the Weasley siblings. She had Bills easy going trait, Charlie's affinity for quiditch and animals, Percy's drive, Fred and George's humor, Ron's loyalty

    • @chrisconcannon6490

The handling of Ginny in the movies is probably what makes it so easy for people who write fanfic to turn her evil (or at least, selfish and possessive of Harry) and easier still to pair Harry with Hermione (whose on-screen chemistry makes it easy to believe they could've been married at the end). Not that she was given a ton of the book equivalent of screen-time either, but I think the last time she had a personality in the movies was in Chamber of Secrets. If it wasn't for the fact that Ginny ends up being important to Harry by the end of the series, thus making it difficult to recast the part without extenuating circumstances being involved, I would have been okay with someone other than Bonnie Wright playing Ginny in the movies. That doesn't guarantee that the character would have been more interesting with a different actress, but Bonnie Wright somehow got worse as an actress as the series went on.

Kreature needed his scene of redemption. It was so touching in the books to see him warming to Harry (thanks to Hermione), cleaning the house and cooking nice meals for them. There are only three absences from the films that I felt really should have been included: SPEW, Hokey and Hepzibah Smith, and Peeves.

I would argue that the potion's task and the background of Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs were extremely important.
The former is where Hermione really shines. I sort of hate that her moment was with the Devil's Snare in the movie. It just wasn't as good. The potions task really shows us exactly who Hermione is and what her strengths really are. It should have been there.
The latter really explains Harry's patronus. Granted, if you already read the books, it was easy enough to remember and thus infer, but it's never really explained in detail in the movies at all, and I know people who saw the movies but never read the books who are still confused about Harry's patronus, or any of them. It really should have been in the movie...

I'm still salty about how they portrayed voldemorts death in the films. It ties in with them leaving out Tom Riddles family history. It takes away the humanity of Tom Riddle aka Voldemort and misses a huge opportunity of one of the MAJOR themes in the books, that being ''everyone has light and dark in them, it's the path you choose that determinds your character and who you are as a person''. That overdramatic death raises voldemort to be this inhumane being as opposed a person who choose to dark over light, and that anyone could've been capable of those things giving the right mix of circumstances and character.

    • @ugolomb
      @ugolomb 7 років тому +20

Indeed. Rowling used the phrase "mundane finality" to describe the moment of Voldemort's death ("Tom Riddle hit the floor with a mundane finality, his body feeble and shrunken, the white hands empty, the snakelike face vacant and unknowing"). That point was entirely missed in the film. Nor is it clear, in the film, that he was killed by his own curse.

    • @shayna4205
      @shayna4205 7 років тому +2

N H well I for one think his death in the books was kinda anticlimactic. I mean this is the moment the series has been building up to and it's just it kinda like oh his spell rebounded and killed him. The movie one was way more dramatic which I liked and for the inhuman thing they gave Bellatrix a weird death as well. I don't think Bella even had a horcrux so her soul was intact. Anyways that's just my opinion.

    • @sylmaerie
      @sylmaerie 7 років тому +13

PuppyLover3906 _ i personally think it was meant to be anticlimactic. as people have said above, a big theme of the series was the light and dark in everyone and in the books there was so much history with riddle's family and him before he was The Dark Lord™. his death was supposed to be a human death. it was supposed to be nothing special. it was supposed to show that no matter how powerful you are or how many times you split your soul, you're just as human as everyone else. the movie completely missed that. just my thoughts (:

It always, always bothered me that the films never made it clear that James, Remus, Sirius and Peter were the creators of the Maurauder's Map. There's an entire chapter of exposition and backstory in Prisoner of Azkaban at the Shrieking Shack that gets jettisoned/reduced to a 5-minute film scene all about catching Peter Pettigrew; I realize exposition can be boring, but it was all really important for the future books/movies and the flashbacks would have given a better pace to a scene that's too quickly rushed through in an otherwise good movie.

Serena Bramble The third movie was the point at which the cast and crew stopped caring. The fifth movie is so fucking abridged. The fourth didn't do too bad. Certain individual moments could have been better, but the drama was done justice. The third movie is a joke. The sixth movie needed to cover more content as well. The 7th and 8th just needed to stick to the script and include everything. Yet, despite being separated into two full length movies, they still managed to miss things and rewrite others. Ffs, that's grade a bullshit.

tbh, the whole battle unwrap didn't really allow this to happen. They weren't in the great hall as in the books and Death Eaters are a bit smarter in the films than in the books, so a bunch of people actually just looking at the final battle with the evilest guy around wound't make much sense, as in, why tf they didn't help Harry

Because they all know that it was Harry, and only Harry alone should face Voldemort. All the people already knew about the prophecy. Both sides believe their leader would definitely win the battle, so nobody try to interrupt anything...the only person who would probably interrupt, Bellatrix, was dead. Pardon my sentences, I hope you get the essence of what I mean...

I actually preferred the movie version of the final duel.
In the book, there is a lot of talking at first, and then Harry and Voldemort cast Expelliarmus and Avada Kedavra, and the fight is over. So much buildup for the final duel, and only 2 spells are cast.
In the movie, there is a lot of fighting between Harry and Voldemort. Yes, it would have been nice if there were many witnesses, but I still loved that was a lot more spell casting than just "Avada Kedavra!" "Expelliarmus!"

Movies cut out most of Lupin and Tonks' relationship (particularly the stuff in Deathly Hallows), most notably him angsting about whether he passed on his condition to his son when he finds out Tonks is pregnant, leading to him walking out on Tonks and trying to convince Harry to let him help with the Horcrux hunting, leading to Harry yelling at Lupin and finally hammering it into his thick skull that he needs to go back to look after his family, leading to Lupin pulling himself together and going back to his wife and then having this really adorable scene right after Teddy's born when he goes rushing into Shell Cottage to gush and brag about his son and makes Harry Teddy's godfather, effectively healing the rift that had formed between him and Harry due to Lupin's earlier idiocy, and then later Lupin telling Tonks to stay behind with Teddy when he sets out for the Battle of Hogwarts (because he very much wants to take care of his family at this point and is dead-on determined to keep them safe), which of course Tonks ignores because she's Tonks and so she leaves their son with her mother and sets out to fight, and she spends a good portion of said battle trying to locate her husband and then they die and it is so sad because Lupin was actually happy for the first time since James died and he had a family and things were looking up for him and then he was killed and all of that was taken away…
(Ahem)… Sorry about that. I was just really upset that they cut out all of that. I love the way that Lupin and Tonks develop throughout Deathly Hallows and was bummed out that the movies didn't show any of it… bad enough they cut out Teddy, they had to cut out EVERYTHING about the Lupins…

Personally I'm kind of glad a lot of it got cut because the name Tonks annoys the hell out of me. It made the last couple books difficult for me to read because I had to see that name so much. No idea why it's so annoying, but ugh. Virtually any other name would've been better. And that's coming from someone who LOATHES her given first name with every fiber of her being, and is in the process of getting it legally changed. I understand why she goes by something else, but, I don't understand why she had to choose something that's so awkward to say, and sounds like a description for a metal pipe falling down a brick well.

We're never given the full text of it, its connections to Trelawney and Neville are never mentioned, nor are we given a proper explanation of it in general. to be fair Dobby didn't get much better treatment either. He had a major role in Chamber of Secrets but in the books he's a pretty good presence in the next several books, notably helping Harry with the triwizard's second task in book 4 and telling Harry about the room of requirement in book 5. Then saving everyone from Malfoy manor in book 7 and meeting his untimely death at the hands of Belatrix.
In the movies though. he plays his roll in Chamber of Secrets as we'd expect then we don't hear from him again until he shows in Malfoy Manor and dies in Deathly Hallows Part 1. Kinda undercuts the emotional impact of his death in my opinion especially since it was the note they ended the movie on. The death of a character we'd hadn't seen or heard from for 5 movies.

Kreacher's redemption, and the fact that the MARAUDERS made the Marauder's Map. The movie glosses over it in such a way that it would take an obsessive viewer to realize that Harry's Dad, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin actually wrote the damned thing. I also thought it was important AS HELL that Weasley's Wizard Wheezes was started in Diagon Alley with Harry's Triwizard winnings. Also the backstory with the Gaunts, and Hepsibah smith... But I do know that these things take time, and that making a movie essentially means compressing the hell out of a story to fit a two hour time window.

Nice work, but you missed one that sticks in my craw. They left out 10 seconds of crucial dialogue. In the climactic duel between Harry and Voldemort, Voldemort ridicules Harry's confidence, saying Harry must either think he is the better Wizard or that he has the more powerful weapon. Harry, in essence, says "I think both." That is so important because it shows that Harry already knows that HE is the master of the elder wand, not Voldemort.

I'd say you haven't really watched a whole lot of the series I'm talking about, Vikings has better production values than the Harry Potter films.
For reference Harry Potter 1 (sorc/philo stone) was a $130 million budget film.
Game of Thrones budget is about $100 million for a season.
Vikings budget is about $40 million for it's first season.
Considering that Game of Thrones has reportedly over 1 billion annual income, for what is essentially less startup capital, steady and stable returns, and less need for hype generation as the audience never hits the low spot between movies, basically you can go from selling the subscriptions to HBO/Netflix to making box sets as soon as the season is completed to the hype material for season 2, yadda yadda.
So money wise, no, feature length movies make less and less sense as time goes on. A longer running series is not only cheaper to produce due to having long term contracts (paying somebody a yearly salary with what is essentially job security is typically favored over large payout contracts). It can generate more revenue, especially if you make deals with theaters to still have premier showings of episodes, you can do that along side the subscription service releases, and release hard copies and merchandies over a longer period of time so making money is better. Lastly, for the financials, it's stable. Since a lot of money comes from subscriptions to the sites, subscriptions tending to be a guaranteed sale, companies can have a ball park for how much they know they will make back, essentially, without even trying.
It would have similar success to the Harry Potter films, which, believe it or not, were considered flops (as in failures) in the opening weekend box office. Not making the money you spent on the film on opening weekend caused Harry Potter's second film to have an even lower budget, they didn't become opening night successes until the deathly hollows. (then interestingly fantastic beats had the worst opening weekend of all the previous films). It would be easier to argue that having backing from Netflix, HBO, or Starz and making a series would have produced a larger revenue burst. Due to the way subscription works, the way the fandom was in general, selling it as a series would have sold it much better. You would have been able to include a lot of the more interesting characters that were dropped, we could have kept from dropping plot points, some things could be further explored. Essentially the biggest criticisms of the film (too fast paced, cut content, lack of character development) would be easily solved by turning the 2 hour movies into 10 x 50 min episodes.
As for "quality" this is a pretty moot point, Harry Potter 1 and 2 were easily considered to have the worst production values of all movies at the time, this was mostly due to poor direction, not because "movies look better" nor was it much of a budget constraint. As we saw Vikings had a lot of good set design and production values, and it's 10 first episodes were 40 million to produce.

One that annoys me is not having Barty Crouch Jr receive the Dementor's kiss at the end of Goblet but instead saying they're returning him to Azkaban. If he's still alive and still has all his faculties then they could just use veritaserum on him officially and he'd tell Fudge that Voldemort really is back. It's totally inexplicable why they don't do that in the films, collective memory loss perhaps? Also if he was just returned to Azkaban, where was he when Voldemort broke everyone out? Did he decide to stay?

That kind of put me off, the actors are perfect for the roles, but the director left out some major parts. So what if there needs to be a part two for every movie. At least it's like the books. • @SaiyanSweetheart45
      @SaiyanSweetheart45 7 років тому +1

Amokra Speaking of the Malfoys, I feel like there's a lot with them that the films cut out. For example, in the books Narcissa Malfoy got angry with Bellatrix for blaming the whole Ministry fiasco on Lucius and it was she that begged Snape to make the Unbreakable Vow, not Bellatrix, who was telling her she should be proud that Draco was 'chosen'.
Another thing was the book describes Lucius and Narcissa not even attempting to fight (partially due to his wand having been destroyed and her giving her wand to Draco) while they run through the battle, only worrying about finding their son.
They were still villains of course, but that to me added more complexity to their characters. But in the movie, they're just there and then they're not.

In the first movie when Harry, Ron and Hermione have to play the life size chess game in order to move on to the final confrontation between Harry and Professor Quirrel/Voldemort. When Ron sacrifices his knight in order to win the game, has anyone noticed when Ron falls off, there was a piece of stone/rubble that actually hits his face and does do some real damage. If you slow it down and move frame by frame, you can see it quite clearly. Rupert did well not flinching when it hit him and kept in character. I've always thought Rupert Grint was the best actor of the 3 main characters in the first and second movies. When it came to the 3rd movie, Daniel and Emma had both improved and all three became better and better with each movie.

They really started dropping more and more balls over time. When I was a kid having my Mom read me the HP books, I stopped after the fourth one ended because 1) It demoralized the hell out of me, and 2) I was officially too old in my Mom's eyes for her to be reading me books (Jokes on her I read to her all the time). So I stopped recognizing that the mood and feelings of the books had DRASTICALLY shifted away from anything I wanted to be a part of. Shame though that might be, I thank God I held off reading them because it made watching the movies bearable. I just recently read the seven, (1-4, actually reading them by myself), and I have to say I miss my blissful ignorance.
The Books do so much more, right... that I can't even deal with the movies. Though I can be the first to admit that some of the more somber scenes are sickeningly depressing. The thing I REALLY REALLY wanted out Part 2 (DH), was actually seeing Fred's Death and hearing Professor McGonagall scream when seeing Harry's dead body. I love the way it was described in the books. Maggie Smith would have killed me if she had screamed. I am just thinking about it and I am tearing up. Instead we got ... *shudders* Ginny with an unearned scream since she is barely ever around and only so that they keep the continuity alive. What a shame.

CryingBuddha exactly why I've still never seen past the fifth movie.. didn't even watch it until DVD and didn't pay much attention. While their casting was on point and the story should have held me through, the movies were just ruining it for me. I'm almost thirty, and will forever stand by the books; the movies..? Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith are the best parts. Where was Peeves?! 👻👻

I've always thought leaving out all the animagus stuff was a mistake which encompasses:
    a) who the marauders wereand why the names, that they became animagus to look after Lupin during his 'time of the month', that it's ridiculously difficult to achieve and all animagus (like McGonagall) are supposed to be on a register so the government know who they are
    b) most of the whys and wherefores around Pettigrew, his 'death' and his hiding
    c) how Sirius escaped Azkaban

YES. I didn't even notice this until I watched the movie with my mom (who hasn't read the books) and at the end she said, "That was really cool, but I didn't get the connection between the stag and Harry's dad." And I spluttered and coughed and was about to ask her if she was paying attention and then realized...they never explained it. There is no connection made between the Marauders and the animagi. Huge glaring piece left out, there...

The meeting of the two prime ministers in the beginning of book six. Harry Potter is all about the magical world but its still interesting to see how wizards deal with muggles, because we've only seen muggles dealing with wizards (i.e. Harry and the Dursley's)

I missed the Weasleys getting Harry from the Dursleys in the fourth movie, with Arthur going all nuts about muggle stuff, Vernon rampaging and the twins dropping the "ton thongue toffees".
Quite unimportant scene, I understand they left it out, but I just loved it.

Similarly when Dumbledore turns up at the start of the Half-Blood prince. Harry forgot to tell the Dursleys he was coming and there's quite a funny scene with Dumbledore calmly/forcefully offering them a drink. In the film Harry is for some reason riding around the London Underground and chatting up a waitress, and Dumbledore unexpectedly appears.

In my opinion, although I like the movies too, their focus was too much on Harry, Ron and Hermione. I mean, sure they're the main characters, but reading the books, there is just so much more in the Harry Potter world than that.
Neville, Kreacher, more about Dumbledore's backstory (you got to learn much more of his character in the books, in the movie he was basically just the wise mentor), more about Tom Riddle's backstory, his first meeting with Dumbledore and why he was the only wizard Riddle feared, and many other things. I get that you can't put everything from the books into the movies, but most of it was a very important part of the series and you could've showed part of it in very few screen time.

    Bigs ones for me are:
    Marauders Map origins.
    Neville's parents.
Fred & George's Quidditch World Cup bet that explains how they opened their store.
    The Quidditch World Cup!
3rd task of the Triwizard Tournament
    No Peeves.
    Battle of the Astronomy Tower.
Seeing the known Death Eaters lose in duels with our good guys.
Lupin's werewolf backstory and Whomping Willow origins.
Meeting between the Muggle Prime Minister & Minster of Magic.
    Apparation lessons
The full battle of the Department of Mysteries
    More of Voldemort's memories.
    OWLs test and results
    Dumbledore's funeral!
Harry's visit to Ravenclaw common room searching for the diadem.
    Grey Lady backstory.
    Harry repairs his wand.
