    One of the big downsides of "lunge Mines" is that even if you get them in contact, (much harder now that BANZAI has been nerfed) if you roll a 1, per the rules it is not 9 damage, but instead a "miss" that still somehow kills your "lunge mine", so your opponent still gets one of your die. I'm still salty about losing BANZAI, but I'm working on a few lists, one is all Vet Inf with some trucks, and the other is 8 inexp medium tanks plus militia rifles.

    I disagree on the fact that France is a minor faction but I can understand why Warlord made this choice, especially because the army list is only focusing on 1940 France. But Italy? They fought every allied nation on a huge variety of theatres and where the major axe's force in North Africa. Why are they considered minor is a mystery to me.

    • @jampine8268

      Probably because they just got utterly clapped in every front, and not in the way where Germany did where they took land but eventually fell apart from assaults on all side, Italy just failed to break through.
      I mean, they needed Germany's help to break Greece, and still had a bit of bother with Ethiopia before the war.

      I imagine it's to encourage sales of the minor axis book. Lot of Italian players compared to Finns, Romanians and Hungarians.
      Also, at the beginning of 2E Italy was heavily lacking in models and rules from Warlord. They've since gotten a lot of attention in the campaign books over V2, so much so that they've got more going on than Japan in terms of model lines and books.

      The reason I'm guessing that Italy got put as a minor power was because they split into civil war in the middle of WW 2 with Mussolini and the hardcore fascists running the North and Bagdolio and the Royal government running the South.

    • @rwdyeriii
      @rwdyeriii 2 місяці тому +7

      @@jampine8268you say Italy got clapped at every front. You seem to forget that although Italy did have a rough go of things in the French Campaign of 1940 and the Greek Invasion, the Italians did beat the British in the first invasions of Egypt almost back to Cairo. Also they held their own against the Russians until the Germans refused to give them and the Romanians the requested armor assets to reinforce them on the flank at Stalingrad. Even then, the Italians showed themselves to be a courageous fighting force all the way through. In addition to that, the legation garrisons in China fought very courageously against the Japanese in 1943 in spite of being outgunned and outnumbered.

    Mordian, if you already know this, then I'm sorry to be beating a dead horse. But the reason for Germany's lack of HE shells is completely historical. Many people complain about the M3 75mm gun and the M1A1 and A2 76mm guns of the Shermans being inferior to the Pak 40 75mm antitank cannon. Which, in terms of pure armor penetration, is correct. However, the *tremendous* upside of the M3, M1A1 and A2 guns was their excellent HE shells. That is why they had inferior armor penetration. The german Pak 40, on the other hand, had excellent antitank capabilities, but its HE capabilities suffered because of this. German tank doctrine was all about tank combat, while American tank doctrine was meant for infantry support, with tank vs tank combat being rare.

    • @jonathanbirkeland1085
      @jonathanbirkeland1085 2 місяці тому +1

      I wish the 17 pounder and the Panther’s 75mm gun both only got a 2” HE instead of a big 3” HE since historically both of those guns had worse HE than the Sherman’s 75mm gun. Call it “75mm Antitank gun works both ways”. It would give you a reason to take a Panther as a dedicated tank hunter, while making the Tiger a better all rounder.

    • @marcusflutist1230

      Panther's HE had more explosives than M4A3E8's one

    • @lt.danhooper1635
      @lt.danhooper1635 2 місяці тому

      @@marcusflutist1230 More explosive mass, yes. However, the German shells used Amatol 40/60 (diluted TNT) while the US used pure TNT explosives, which were more expensive, harder to produce, and *extremely* more efficacious in combat. The cost and difficulty of using pure TNT is exactly why Germany couldn't use better shells. It's not just about the weight of explosive, it's about the energy released by the detonation. TNT was also chosen by the US over Amatol due to Amatol's bad habit of detonating upon shock. So if a German tank carrying HE ammo got hit near the ammo rack, even if the shell didn't penetrate, *boom* goes your ammo. Inside a small steel box full of people. Meanwhile Shermans, especially late-war "wet-rack" tanks, almost never got ammo racked. This is firstly because of the stability of their TNT shells, the "wet racks" mentioned before, and most importantly, the fact the fact that the shells were stored in the very bottom of the turret, packed down and away from almost any possible penetration.
      Sorry for the wall of text, Shermans are fascinating to me. I'd be willing to sit and discuss their pros and cons with someone all day long.

    Poland is my primary faction, and actually I think they're better in V3 than they were in V2, even with the nerf to close combat. AA guns got cheaper, and we can field far more AT options than we used to be able to, and while the list is pretty small, what it actually lacks is a lot of the bloat and "analysis paralysis" you'll see with other nations. You have 2 good options in your infantry section: veteran cavalry and regular riflemen, one to finish off units that you soften up, and one to provide cover fire as you move down the field. You have one good vehicle (the TKS Tankette), a good spread of cheap AA guns and howitzers, a super cheap AT option, a cheaper sniper, and you still get medium mortars (which are great for dealing with enemy campers). So I'm actually really excited about their performance in V3: so far it's been quite successful for me.
    Great write up! Loved this one!

      Free French and Free Polish forces can easily be made using the British or American models using the British rules. Personally I think Free French work great using American models and British rules with “Vengeance” since they’ll get the Artillery Support special rule and Vengeance is very thematic for angry Free French or Free Polish. Plus it lets you take Sherman tanks and Fireflies for the Polish armored units. Even the stat cards for a lot of US model kits include the Free French icon to show it’s intended to be used with them.

    You've misinterpreted the Dutch artillery options. You can take them as normal artillery with normal rules applying for indirect fire amd ranging in. The Severely Outdated rule is an option you can take for -10pts.
    The Severely Outdated rule is to represent the Netherlands complete lack of preparedness before the German invasion. They had a decent number of WW1 era artillery and a couple of more modern guns (which would function normally in BA) but they didnt have anywhere near enough artillery for the job, so they had to break out their 1870s and 1880s vintage artillery (the lightest gun, the 8-Staal, looks like it was taken straight from the ACW battlefields, while the 12 and 15 Staal guns are more siege/fortress guns from that time period). These sorts of guns would would not be able to range in.
    If you wanted to be fluffy about it, the Severely Outdated guns would only be used in an army list themed around the fall of the Netherlands. If you made a Dutch East Indies army you can just use normal artillery as you would expect. The Dutch East Indies were being supplied by British and US weapons factories by the time of the Japanese Invasion.
    Additionally, the Indonesian Infantry squad is pretty decent. Inexperienced LMGs and MMGs arent that bad this edition. Take 4 of these squads with 7 models, give them an LMG and you'll get 9 dice to roll up to 24" per squad. A very good back line unit for 60 pts (4pts less than if you took a standard infantry squad inexperienced, which admittedly isnt much, but a saving is a saving).

    I dont really the Soviet rules.
    I play late war shock army so i dont get commisaars or the monther land rule. Massed battiers isnt that great, its not often that the possible larger artillery barage area hits a unit that it wouldn't have already. And the re-roll failed morale test is less effective on veterans as they are more likely to pass anyway.
    These rules are very much themed for "enemy at the gates" if your playing late war verteans you really do miss out.
    Not to mention so many tanks being wrong. T-34/76 and kv1 should have a 2inch HE template. IS-2 1944 version should have 11+ front armor and the 122mm should be super heavy anti-tank gun as it had 200mm+ PEN. Also no lend lease apart from m-17, so no M5, M3 or universal carrier.

    The German tank guns are modelled as IRL - they went for high velocity (better AP) guns and the HE shells suffered with a lower weight of explosive filling. The standard Allied 75mm gun was a general-purpose weapon - better HE but worse AP effect compared to the German weapon. I'm happy with that.

  • @Gotteule
    @Gotteule 2 місяці тому

    Nice comparisson. And yes, germany feels a lot better in v3 than in v2. However with my americans, I'm a bit dissapointed. The infantry simply has no punch. The new fire and maneuver rule does not contribute much to begin with, and as soon as you start getting special weapons you can basically forget about it. BARs became more expansive with six points, and while not being pointless, they are no auto-pick like they used to be. Having regular engineer sounds nice at first, but you can only give the whole squad 2 smgs. So they are a one trick pony, and if the flamer runs out of fuel, they become almost useless. And talking about smg, every infantry box has tons of them, but they are very limited in the amount they acutally field. Five SMG is the most you can have in a squad. So no SMG deathsquads like the soviet or germans can build.
    All in all, the national traits don't add a lot to the infantry, no smg death squads, no engineers that stay usefull if the flamer runs out, and the BAR is ok at best. Where is the punch it the US Infantry? Yes the Bazooka is great, as you mentioned. But for a major power, the infantry sadly feels lackluster and toothless.
