I just found your videos on UA-cam and they have been such a huge help to me. I have struggled forever with opening my hips. Thanks for the great lessons and I really appreciate how you reply to everyone's comments. What a great guy!
Thank you :) Appreciate you being here with us---hope they serve you well!
Love this entire lesson, Eric…thank you!!
Thanks Bob! Our pleasure!
Been STRUGGLING! with this for months! Thank you Eric great drill.
Hope this one helps ya :)
Reminds me of the video you did with Mike Malaska, on how the hips work, used that tip since I watched it, probably two years ago now, certainly made a big difference to my ball striking and distance
Love to hear that! Really enjoyed filming with Mike---he's great!
Very good instruction, thank you 🍺🏌️
Thank you! Our pleasure!
Good stuff Eric- Thanks for the easy explanations
Thank you! Hope this one helps :)
Some of the best instruction videos out there. Well done Eric!
Thanks for your support!
This is such a beautiful clear and crucial lesson. It has to help a vast number of us who are struggling. I also noticed you didn't say push and straighten your left leg like other Pros. Which i believe has been killing my game. Tks so much for this insightful information.
You got it George---appreciate the kind words and support!
Gold. Love it. You're the best, EC!
Thanks Chad :) Hope you are doing well this summer
That’s what I’ve been struggling with, thanks for your advice 😊
you got it Andrew---hope it helps!
This makes SO much sence - well done!
Thanks!
great instruction/drill
Thank you!
Really enjoy this. This has been something I’ve struggled with for years as I’m one that has the right hip sway back, then on the down swing, move towards the ball. I’ve been told to actually try and stay closed longer to help with my swing. I wonder if getting left sooner without moving towards the ball would be better
Thanks John!
Maybe...I would need to see your swing on video to say for sure
Wonderful video! I'll try harder tomorrow.
Thanks Art! Hope it serves you well
This is such a great lesson. It’s all I’m working on with my full swing. I’m pretty good at doing this until I get lazy or tired. I need to be conscious of it all the time.
Thank you! Hope it serves you well!
A brilliant lesson, thanks ...
My pleasure!
Great simple video tips
Thank you!
Excellent Eric! I'm going to channel my inner Elvis and work on this drill. Thanks so much!
Lol love it----appreciate it :)
Thanks Eric try this tomorrow on the course 👍
:)
Eric & Tom Saguto. The only two coaches I trust on the web! Great coaches with great drills. Really help keep it simple and easy to understand. Thanks Eric! 💪🔥👍
Appreciate your support, Matt!
I think it is John Saguto. And I agree 100%
Wrong. It is Tom. Sorry. Now I know!!!
Love this! Thank you. Are there any gym workouts/stretches that you suggest to improve this movement?
Hey Jake! Not specifically----no. What I would suggest is find a good physical therapist or trainer to work with who can identify your weakness and how to improve those to help you move better (thats what I did and was huge help)
Eric, thank you! I worked on better hip rotation with limited success. I realized my external/internal hip flexibility was horrendous. Shockingly bad. LOL! Strengthening and stretching has helped like you wouldn't believe. Searching internal/external hip flexibility plus your great instruction may help someone else! You're the best! Stay well.
Love it! Thank you :)
Very timely. I will try this immediately
Hope this helps ya Bill!
Great video!
Thank you :)
Great video. One more addition. When practicing this, start with smal swings and try to hit it hard. This will make you try to move your hips quicker and so making the turn bigger,
Thanks! I like that!
Great drill, I have been working on my early extension, and better posture has really helped me get rid of it. I am in Philly which isn’t too far from you, do you still do in person lessons?
Thanks Tyler!
I do, yes, but all of my spots for the summer here in PA are full at the moment. If you send an email to eric@Cogornogolf.com with the subject "lessons" we can put you on the list if any cancellations or openings!
Tommy Fleetwood says his key move to initiate this is to PUSH his left hip back. Helps him initiate the rotation you speak of and clears it at the same time.
I like that! We have many vids on that one
this is a great tip for all high handycapers!
This is great! Love it. So the same principle apply to fairway woods?
Thanks! Absolutely
Yes, good stuff. It's going to be a bit of work to avoid just pushing up, but great improvement very quickly.
Thanks Nicholas---hope this helps ya!
thank you Eric for this easy explanation. i am returning to golf and struggling turning the hips. i have noticed my game is pretty inconsistent because of this. i am dealing with a cam lession on the left hip that is also limiting my hips movement. is there a golf swing that can be reliable with limited hip movement? or in your opinion, if you rotate properly the hips should not hurt and the swing just flows
There are ways to work around the hip rotation----yes....I would need to see your swing to offer YOU specific advice so I can see exactly what you can/cannot do, other parts of your swing, etc
Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and we can build you a pattern that works.
One option with less hip turn is to move the ball back, slide the hips more and play a bigger draw/hook pattern like a Tom Lehman pattern
Bro I feel like I’m stealing. Your instruction is so good.
Lol appreciate it :) Happy to help!
To Push the right Hip foreward will lead to some nice sockets
👊
Thanks for watching! Hope this one helps!
I would add a key part of this motion is not allowing the center of your pelvis to move closer to the ball. Moving closer to the ball causes all kinds of accomodations (OTT, early extension) because you run out of room for your arms to reach the ball. I would make this the initial, foundational critical part of the movement. Eric addresses this, as someone who has struggled with this for 30 years, it has been an "ah hah" moment.
100%! Tried to cover that in the second part with the hips staying inside the "wall" inside the line over the toe line
Its actually less about running out of room, and more about the change in spine angle. During transition, neither your pelvis OR trail hip should get closer to the ball, as both will change your spine angle and in turn shift your hand path, forcing you to swing OTT or to stand up (depending where your hands are at the time of the spinal shift).
The hips should never open until the hands have reached the slot, and the lateral shift (which is actually travelling towards the lead heel) has moved our center of mass back to the ball, shifted our spine angle to allow us to swing underneath, as well as created a “post” position in our lead leg to rotate around.
This might be what I referred to in my comment that I just posted. So you could do this too early with the hips if that hands and arms haven’t dropped into the slot yet?
@@johnraudabaugh726 Yes, the hips operation as such:
Shift-Rotate-Shift-Rotate.
As we perform the downswing, the hips shifting forward brings our Center of mass back to the ball, tilts our spine angle, and creates a post in our left leg, which we then rotate around.
If your hands aren’t in the slot when we rotate around that post, that would be early extension, where the player is forced to then stand up and manipulate the swing path.
Think of it this way. We are shifting our hips to create the post, if our hands aren’t in the slot, and then we open the hips to rotate around the post, then what are we actually rotating for? The hands aren’t there, so there’s nothing for us to rotate.
Edit:
Something important to note. Everything in our body is connected. The feet pull the hips, the hips pull shoulders, the shoulders pull the arms and hands. So if you find that your hands aren’t in the slot before your hips open, you’ve lost connection somewhere in your swing (likely the backswing), and that needs to be addressed first.
Eric, I really do like your lessons, your drills work for me. That part from 8:30 onwards is totally me. I transition OK, but hardly rotate by the time I reach the ball (backswing no issue) with very little side bend (my head ends up max half an inch lower compared to address, extending a little too early losing my spine angle) in to out. Question on the being 'more agressive' part: how to do that if one is (very) trail side dominant? My right foot is always largely on the ground by the time I reach the ball (slow-mo mobile phone really showed that): Is it an idea to push a little with the right foot to rotate more? or is the foot getting up always supposed to be a passive reaction to the hips turning? Should I rather practice harder on right side bend? (that does trigger the feeling of my left hip going up)
Thanks for the comments and awesome questions. Good news---I can certainly answer and help
Bad news---I can't give you great answers without seeing your swing. Or else we are being too general....need to see what you are REALLY doing vs just feels to explain everything well.
Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and I will help
Eric great video I'm trying it today I have four hip rotation should I also transfer my weight with this move or does it come automatically like what it does to the LP any exercises to strengthen the right hip move thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
Def need to transfer weight with this.....whether it happens automatically or not wont be the same for everyone. I would confirm with video!
good things to learn from this! now, by the time you get into my age, with serious arthritis in your already square formed hips, how can we solve this? is there a workaround?
Would need to see your swing on video and see what you can and cannot do to say for sure!
Great for something I've been working on to get rotation facing the target. If I'm seeing this correctly Eric your left hip has moved toward the target either before or simultaneously with opening of hips. Right or wrong? Be good-Russ
Thats correct! Simultaneously
I wish I had your golf swing. It looks so tidy and effortless.
Any chance you can show your swings in slow slow motion for future videos?
Cheers Tom
Appreciate the kind words and feedback, Tom! Something to consider for future videos!
Eric, So when you do this , your head needs to still stay behind the ball? I notice when I do this correct , I feel that separation between my upper and lower body and the shot has some zip on it. But if my upper body turns thru with my lower body , I hook it bad. Thanks , your a great coach !
100%....head needs to stay back.
Good details on the head staying back part here: ua-cam.com/video/NmT19TcjEvs/v-deo.html
As the hips open...
-Head back (chest up)
-Trail shoulder down
More on the timing of the opening of upper vs lower I really like here:

I love this Eric, thanks so much. Please riddle me this though. Why can I get this so right and put it into practice at the driving range but when I tee off in one of the weekly comps I fall back to hooks, thins, fats, tops etc. it’s like I go into frozen mode and my hips seize up and I’m all arms and wrists and there is nothing I can do to break the curse. Is there such a thing as chronic panic attacks for golfers?
Hey Mick!
For sure----it happens to EVERYONE (range to course).....just to varying degrees.
There are solutions to that (mainly in HOW you spend time/practice on range)
Thats too much to explain in text here---I go through that thoroughly on www.cogornogolf.com or you can get the details on how to transfer practice here:
ericcogornogolf.podia.com/eric-cogorno-s-ultimate-full-swing-range-practice
When do u collect the ball at impact? Before right hip moves forward , after or during hip moves? Please clarify.
Hey Vim!
You'll make contact with the ball AS the hips are rotating open, not before or after. I sent a video in your other comment that I think will help a lot!
Hey 👋 Eric, what is the best drill that you have found for getting off your trail side in the downswing and not getting stuck there at impact? Is this it or a really good one and maybe there’s one that you like better? Thanks 🙏! Also, are you done with FL now or just hanging out with Yankees for a while? 😂
Hey Kevin! Back in FL now :)
Love this one!
ua-cam.com/video/1T9s2B3FHgA/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Hope it helps!
If you replace 'hip rotation' with 'hip lean' it would make this clearer for me. My 'hip rotation' gives me an over the top swing. With the 'hip lean', starting at the top of my swing, my hips follow my swing after impact. I use the 'Weight Forward, Straight Arms, Elbows In, and Hip Lean as my only swing thoughts and the 'Hip Lean' has increase my enjoyment of the game.
I hear ya Gregory!
Hi Eric. This is definitely something I need to work. My concern is that trying to move my hips earlier causes my shoulders to start turning quicker and I come over the top. Should I feel like hips are turning but shoulders are starting later? Thanks.
Hey Joe!
Good question.
You want the RIBCAGE to open along with the hips.....but the shoulders not as much.
This is probably my favorite one on the sequence of the body parts in the downswing rotation to help explain how to do it perfectly:
The holding the lead shoulder part is particularly helpful!
ua-cam.com/video/NIbmk5fU1Hs/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf Holding the lead shoulder is an eye opener for me , Thanks
any tips for someone with a bad left knee? I injured it a few years ago, and I don't think it'll ever be the same. Seems to make opening my hips a bit harder as it stresses the knee when it straightens. thanks!
Hey Rick! No tips per say---would need to see what you can and cannot do....send us swings in to www.cogornogolf.com or find a good coach or PT locally to work with. All depends on your ROM and how it effects everything else
Great visual. Does driver differ at all?
Thanks William! Nope, this one applies to all clubs!
Eric- is there a reason why this drill wouldn’t also work for driver? Also as an early extender love the visual of the wall above the toes
Same thing for driver (all clubs)
Me too on the wall!
Eric, I am making progress with my irons, particularly from the wedges through the 7 iron, but I cannot hit the driver using this rotary movement. Is their an existing video which addresses an issue such as this? Furthermore, while I am 76 this year, but in excellent physical health, I am unable to get the distance from my driver before I began to re-shape my swing using this technique using this technique. I was usually in that 255-265 yard average. Suggestions!? At this age I know that time is increasingly an issue. Thank you, Wayne
Hey Wayne!
We could definitely help but I need to see your swing on video to offer any suggestions. Could be several things causing those issues so I don't want to guess without seeing! Send swings in to www.cogornogolf.com and we will fix it up
So i just started golf a month ago and its been fun but I still don't know what I'm doing. I been searching different golfing channels to find the right teacher and after watching a few videos I think you may be it. I'm still overwhelmed by the sheer amount of videos and don't know where to begin. Is there a recommended video order to watch for a new guy like me? The point I'm at is that I cant get solid contact on the ball consistently, and when i do hit it im in the 70-110 yard range. The 3 clubs I've been using is the 4 iron, 6 iron and driver (hand me down set, I dont have everything) Thanks!
For sure.....I can't recommend getting a good coach enough. Theres soooooo much and so many videos...key to find a great coach to identify the top 1,2 things to focus on.
Find a good coach in person or work with us at www.cogornogolf.com so we can give you a detailed practice plan to follow based on your swing and goals. We have detailed plans for all areas of the game. I would recommend sending swings in to us or finding a great coach locally!
If you ever decide to take your skills on the road to the west coast, please let me know. I would signup for an in-person lesson in a heartbeat. Pennsylvania is a little far for me to go for a golf lesson and I am not into the recording of my swing for an analysis. Keep up the great content. I can relate to the information in this video.
Thanks Alex--appreciate it!
Sir when I move my right hip forward, where is the club at impact position in relation to hip move forward, is not clear to me?
Hey there!
At impact, we'd like to see the hips rotated open roughly 45°. Here is a video with more details that you may enjoy!
ua-cam.com/video/ULy3gQuw88Q/v-deo.html
Hi Eric when you said use right hip to push forward, isn’t that early extension?
Hey!
FORWARD....toward the TARGET = good!
IN.....toward the BALL= bad (early extension)
Thank you!!!
Interesting technique to promote hip rotation, and more importantly lower body moving out and away from the clubhead path, but you did not mention what happens when hip rotation is not done. If you don't rotate hips well before clubhead impact, then your arms are restricted in the swing and follow through causing your clubhead path to be outside-in because the arms are restricted by the shoulders being in the wrong place at impact. Please advise about this, and if I am not correct. If you are consistently hitting shots to the left or slicing, it may be because you are not rotating your hips out of the way well before clubhead-ball impact, and therefore causing your clubhead path to be outside-in across your body due to restricted arms
Hello!
Lack of hip rotation would not cause the path the go more out to in.....actually the opposite.
Rotation....of any body segment....moves the path more out to in.
What moves the path more in to out (in terms of body rotation) is side bend and extension.
Paul Wilson says, move the trail knee towards the lead knee simultaneous with the beginning of the downswing. He adds same emphasis as you, make sure that the trail knee as it moves towards the target is underneath the club at the address position. Eric says the same thing with his “box.” This helps me rotate and automatically get my weight forward. Now if I can fix the other 80 things in my swing, I will be a legend.
Love it :)
Lol....one thing at a time
Eric, the rotational aspect has never been my problem. I have picked up great points on a fluid finish from this video. However, the “ right hip going forward and finishing on the toe” also gets my chest facing forward a tad too early thereby catching the top of the ball. How do I prevent this?
Hey!
I would feel your chest/shoulders staying CLOSED for the first half of the downswing and getting the club AND ARMS to stay in more over 4 o'clock
These will help: ua-cam.com/video/jI5TRIbVuAY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUeRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHN3aW5nIGZyb20gaW5zaWRl
I truly am grateful for you taking the time and effort not only to refer me to the relevant video but also the exact timeline on the video. You are an amazing coach. Pity I am here in Europe!
Because of an injury I cannot put weight on the outside of my left foot on the downswing. Any recommendations?
I would need to see your swing Thomas to see what else/other parts are in your swing to figure out how to work around then. Send us swings to www.cogornogolf.com or find a good in person coach to find a solution.
Too many other variables I need to know to give you a simple answer here
@@CogornoGolf Eric thanks for your reply. I found a video of yours from about 4 years ago. This video recommended for senior golfers to focus more on the backswing turn by pulling the back foot back and swinging to right field with a draw. This tip helps those who have a problem with getting a full turn to the left on the downswing. I have tried this and I am having some success.
Just a tip...im no pro but stretch first and get a little more limber. Otherwise a lot of these golf drills could hurt you more than help. Pros stretch like crazy crazy amounts
Always a good idea to stretch!
That being said...all of the motions prescribed are within normal range and plane of motion for all of the joints, so I wouldn't be concerned about injury risk here. Doing these motions the best YOU can is the key👍
Something I am working on at the time and will try your drill for sure. However I injured my left foot during practice in the studio with my pro. I see the same risk for your left foot, it is tilted to the left. You seem to be okay with that but this will not go well for all players. My suggestion is that peoples who have to work on their hip rotation could put the left foot a little more facing out. This makes the rotation more easy and prevents injury.
Yep...different ways to do it....
Lots of good players will roll quite a bit on ankle
Did full video on left foot here: ua-cam.com/video/wKNX_7tkN5o/v-deo.html&pp=ygUWRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGxlZnQgZm9vdA%3D%3D
Eric do you throw the club a little bit or no? Personally in your swing I'm asking.
Only with driver
@@CogornoGolf thank you sir
Is it possible to have the hands and clubhead trailing too far behind?
Definitely
Keep in mind this is for someone who needs MORE hip rotation......so that wouldn't be of concern.
If you are on the other end of the spectrum as a test I would put an alignment rod through the belt loops equal length sticking out on both sides.....make sure the arms/club get in front of the back parts of stick in downswing
This would normally be matched up with a lead wrist flex right?
This is just about getting a "normal" amount of hip rotation....which you could pair with any wrist angles.
The type of grip will dictate the wrist angles much more....more on that here:
ua-cam.com/video/S776LyvM6Pc/v-deo.html&pp=ygUYRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdyaXN0IGdyaXAg
ua-cam.com/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUgRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdyaXN0IGdyaXAgIHJlbGVhc2U%3D
@@CogornoGolf but wouldn't the hip turn automatically open the clubface? am i interpreting it correctly?
Yes......but how you CLOSE the face can be from multiple sources
I hear what you're saying and you aren't wrong...it can be closed with wrist flex, grip or arm rotation.
Details on how to close the face here:
www.youtube.com/watch?
v=fCW9W_lGQtM&t=138s&pp=ygUhRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHNxdWFyZSB0aGUgY2x1YiBmYWNl
But keep in mind what Im showing here is how to get to NORMAL amount of hip rotation......this isn't "a lot" of hip rotation which requires anything different....just normal hip rotation and normal squaring of face
Major issue for me. Gotta get those hips moving earlier. Thanks Eric.
Our pleasure! Hope it helps your game!
Eric, are those Olukai shoes supportive enough to play a round of golf in?
Yep--I like them!
@@CogornoGolf Thanks.
@@CogornoGolf oh by the way thanks for the video. I have been trying to get my right hip involved to motivate my lazy legs.
You got it :)

Hey Don!
Yes! All clubs for this one👍
@@CogornoGolf thanks sir. Your awesome 👍🙏

Hey Eric, you established back in PA now? Don’t tell me the FL heat 🥵already got to you!
Hey Kevin! Lol---just back for the summer! Staying in FL full time but nice to come back for a few months in summer :)
I cant rotate my hips, how can I turn better?
Hey there!
Check out this video below for some tips! Let us know if you have any questions after watching👍
ua-cam.com/video/LfoEu9MN8QY/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I consider myself fairly flexible, but getting my hips 90 degrees to the target line on the follow through is not easy. Trying this drill made me realize I'm only getting to about 60 degrees.
Try flaring your lead foot out more to help....can play with stance line and other variables as well to help
Good one to work on
Lesson-Good. No Lesson-Bad
:)
In order to properly perform the hip bump, I think it’s important to understand why.
1. During the backswing our hips naturally shift away from the target. If we simply unwound from that position, we would be hitting well behind the ball.
2. More importantly is spine angle. At the top of the backswing, our spine is relatively vertical, which is why so many amateurs are swinging OTT. Your spine angle won’t allow you to do anything else. But, as the hips shift forward, the spine angle tilts into a position which allows us to swing underneath.
3. The hip shift creates our left leg post. Which, like in basketball, gives us a stable position to simply rotate around. The post position should feel like our left hip socket is literally stacked on top of our femur, which is stacked on top of our ankle.
But what’s interesting, we can actually preset these conditions! If at setup, we simply shift our hips towards the target and our left heel (while keeping our sternum still), what do you notice?
We’ve created the post position AND shifted our spine angle before the swing even begins. Which means, as we transition through our downswing, suddenly our hips only need to shift roughly 2 inches (depending on the amount of preset bump), compared to roughly 12 inches without presetting.
Just a little tip, and food for thought for all those struggling with hip shifting.
Thanks for the feedback and thoughts!
Hi Eric. Love your videos. How about this... Just tell your student to have your"chest to the sky on your finish". That's it. No drill. Just a simple swing thought. Chest to the sky. You do that and everything you described, will follow. It's impossible to have your "chest to the sky"without having your hips square, knees kissing etc... Just my five cents worth
SOMETIMES yes.....but not always :)
We talked about chest to sky last week here: ua-cam.com/video/NmT19TcjEvs/v-deo.html
Another instructor says do the absolute opposite. Don’t push the right hip forward but instead pull the left hip back. Slight difference in feel and timing. He says the arms will tend to get stuck in the downswing if you push. What do you think?
Hey Logan---I think its pretty clear what I think in this video :)
Honest question. You gave that zero thought. Bye.
Geez Logan! I dont understand....did you watch the video? If I thought the arms would get stuck behind when doing this move of course I wouldn't do a video on it :) Thats all!
Because the pelvis is designed for stability and weight bearing and is supported by some of the strongest ligaments in the body, the pelvis is capable of very limited amounts of rotation on its own .In order for the pelvis to move in a fashion that most would call “rotation “, the pelvis is dependent on hip movement to change the position of each respective hip socket . The below quote by @ pt ax of Tommy Fleetwood below “ push his left hip back “ is consistent with this basic anatomy .
An older video which Eric did with Mike Maklaska describes a similar motion.
The important concept for golfers to learn is to NOT try to rotate the pelvis , since rotation beyond a small amount is anatomically impossible , but to move the left hip socket away from the target line during the downswing
Thanks for your thoughts Dave!
This is ridiculously HARD to do!!! No wonder I have sucked for decades. Yeah, two rehearsals one hit… Check the video. I think I heard my iPhone laughing at me.
Hope you find more success moving forward my friend!
The guy in the yellow shirt and green shorts on the range desperately needs your help.
So true
Mike malaska teaches to push back your left hip when your club is at impact, which creates more power. Eric does a great video with Mike but doesn't use what he learns which is ok cause he wouldn't have his own method.
:)
Left hip back or right hip through accomplish the same end goal
2+2=4.......but so does 3+1=4.......different ways to get to the same end goal
Another great video Eric! Is it just a coincidence that the player hitting behind you on the driving range always seems to be a perfect example of the very problem you are addressing in your videos?. In this case the gentleman with the yellow shirt. 🙂
Thank you, Steve!
Haha, I noticed that too. Guy in the green was the correct way and dude in yellow was bad way.
Showing pictures of tiger does nothing to help me make this hip move ??
Just giving ya some eye candy :)
This is same as the club behind your back in the arm pits
Lots of great drills will certainly have similar fundamentals!!
Nor entirely true. Rocco Mediate was pretty much hips square are impact. He was pretty good. No Absolutes in Golf. Sorry.
Lol no sir....no opinions needed....go ahead and look at any 3d data on pros measured or even easier slow mo a pro on youtube here. Everyone has hips open.
