In my experience over the last 15 years, Project Managers are a breed of "bean counters." Most are essentially spread-sheet and burn-down-chart machines, constantly pushing people to produce outcomes that they, themselves, don't really even understand. I have worked with some that were clueless and with some that were delightfully insightful. Those insightful PM's have incredible potential to actually manage a project, based upon their understanding of what is going on. Unfortunately, there are an incredible number of PM's that never move beyond the process of the 'bean counting' and remain unaware of where their team's work is actually sitting at a given moment. These PM's ought to become financial accountants; Project Management is so much more.

Brilliant video on what a project manager does. I'm learning project management and this is a field I believe can help me deliver more and bring out real goods and services to society. I struggle with being stuck at the idea and planning stages and can't seem to put together actually what is needed and what it takes to get the job done, to complete the project. Brilliant video. To the point and discuss what real project management is all about. Thank you for taking the time to make such a video. I have been saying the same message for over 30 years, few listened and many are stuck in tools, methodologies, inputs/outputs/processes, etc. A true project manager is one who maneuver through the project and the politics of the company, manage the stakeholders, facilitate decisions, pro-actively manage issues, get involved in business case and funding (if possible), manage vendors (many just hire vendors and let them do whatever, and they only get status of work!!!), and truly own the project and its outcome.

I come up through the Engineering and Construction business for over 50 years. I started out in the ship building business, worked in Industrial Construction, Laboratories, Universities, Cities, Counties, you name it. I’m 74 still very active consultant. I can’t believe how people with no clue, people desperate to find a niche. However, most younger people have no skills, poor learning, lack of simple manners or communication skills? What do we do, this education system and social wonderland leaves us with mostly useless desperate followers. Its all about creating an image, not skills, learning to get employed then holding court with a big ego and no way to get fired. How about starting off with values, integrity, honesty, not learning tricks to dishonestly look like you know what you are doing? How about explaining that a guy need to learn by doing not by watching a video on how to bullshit your way to a job? I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to pick up the phone and listen to yet another CEO as me to come in a take over another failed project. And I can’t find enough younger people who want to learn and do what I do? Really big public works projects, schools, big projects. And what happens, I end up hiring the grey haired men and women who simply know their stuff??
I'm a Project Manager and I don't totally believe in Agile, Scrum and all those methodologies. I just focus on the goal of each project. You don't need a fixed methodology. Most of the time, common sense is enough..
I agree with the most part. But being a Project Manager who directly interacts with clients that want something different every time you talk to them, some processes don;t apply. Especially when your role as a Project Manager involves a lot of customer service too.

Absolutely correct! This great vid seems to state the obvious but it does not, actually it should make many process-oriented PMs think twice! As a successful project manager, I can only agree that each project is different and there no magic wizard to execute a project before knowing what sort of 'creature' your are dealing with. The outcome-focused approach is the golden rule, and that is valid for any sort of project, how true!
I do find walking around approach is effective to detect potential issues. It's hard for a PM to have an all-round skillsets like requirement, design, development and testing but by listening to each others, you'd know what's the feedbacks or even if any potential issues they havent bought out yet. Very helpful. Due to huge guidelines as pmbok, required to achieve competence certification, you risk to loose focus on the real thing. Processes should be tools to help PMs and not (as stated in the exams dynamics) mandatory steps. thanks!
These are actually the responsibilities of a project manager. A role is how you should behave. So, as a project manager, you need to behave as an integrator. You need to put all the described processes and tools into one cohesive working system. Moreover, you need to push and adapt it from time to time during the project. Also, I believe, that a project manager is the only person who bears the responsibility for the project. Therefore, his responsibility to plan, execute, motivate, etc. He is responsible to increase the chance for project success. Actually, for all those processes and frameworks to work, you need to develop a correct mindset of a project manager first. Otherwise, YOU won't be motivated to follow them.
I have just rejected by a IC design company although they need a very experienced PM, which I have that experience. Their reason was "they would prefer me if I would have design experience of ICs". Well, what can you say about it? Should all the PMs know design steps of their projects? Thnx.
@@cenk82, there are niches where technical skills are critical. These skills provide you the knowledge of project life cycle for that niche. Without those skills you won't be able to make correct decisions because there's no "business language." You customers talk and set specification using terms from IC design world. So, I say it's totally normal. And answering your question specifically, yes, a project manager must know life cycle of a project they need to run.

Don't choose project management as a career. It is just too risky. Just a pain with no gain. And the worst part is it just a fancy name for an office assistant. Everyone else in the team is getting paid more than a PM. It is the truth. PM is not a real manager. Just a facilitator for the high paid nerds who work in the team.

Yes, sometimes PM's are treated like glorified assistants; relegated to filling in templates, booking meetings and taking minutes. I've seen this happen more times than I care to admit. But then there are also PM's who are highly valued as skilled leaders. These valued PM's are the first names that come to the executive's minds when they have a problem to solve or a new goal to achieve. I've seem both undervalued PM's and the valued ones working side by side, often within the same organization so I'm not sure we can say its systemic or a cultural thing. Why some PM's are valued leaders and others aren't would be an interesting topic for exploration, and perhaps another video...

But in IT field, a PM is just an administrative role which doesn't have much control of anything other than boring paperwork. And the worst part is the inequality of the payment. Software engineers get a really higher salary than an any PM. So please explain us about the other fields and the situation out there. Thanks again!
+bomsbravo in the apartment industry, a pm is the one who is in charge of overseeing and coordinating an entire project. They are usually the ones who hire and fire contractors. Im not sure what the pay for a pm is, in the industry you are familiar with, but in the construction/apartment industry it ranges from 90-120k annually with about 20% bonus. Although pm generally do report to someone, they also lead and direct the work of others.
