I am a German living in the US, I am a Health Care Professional and would return to Germany on the drop of a hat if my personal situation allowed it. I will share my thoughts on the Health Care System in the US but other issues like education, safety, work-life-balance (which you all touch upon in your video) are all handled much better in Germany than in the US. And YES, it is a political matter. The US is a country ruled by the super-rich for the super-rich, even multimillionaires like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates say this openly and demand changes but the Trumps, Koch-brothers, DeSantisses and other powerful reactionaries stand in the way. But back to your video:
The "up front" charges to be payed by the patient before the insurance covers health care services are called deductibles and they can be astronomical. A friend of mine had an "insurance" that required her to pay 14.600 Dollars (like in fourteenTHOUSAND) Dollars before coverage began and that is for EVERY calendar year, meaning when January 1st rolled in her deductible payed in the prevous year went "poof" and she started at 0. Long story short: unless you already payed 14 G in the given year the insurance will cover next to nothing. Now this is an extreme case but even I have a deductible of 7.000 annually. Another big issue is the absurdity of employer based Health Care Insurance: If you loose your job you loose your Health Care Insurance, if you change jobs it will change to another insurer. Not only is this system difficult to navigate but it also places many obstacles into any consistent delivery of care and a new insurer has the right to refuse patients for a "pre-existing condition", so if you have diabetes or high blood pressure a new insurer may reject you, charge you even higher premiums or deny coverage for the "pre-existing condition". Fortunately "Obama Care" prevents this to some degree but the powerful insurance companies find sneaky ways around it.
Two more points: Covered services have consistently decreased over the 30+ years I live and work in the US while premiums have consistently increased, well above inflation rates. The US Health Care System is better described as a Health Avoidance System, it requires enormous out of pocket expenses from the patient and consequently people avoid seeing their doctor, go to a hospital, get their mammogram or colonoscopy...

You put it into crystal clear words. I’ve avoided exercising because I might get hurt and couldn’t afford it and always took the worst “insurance” plan because regardless I would never be able to reach the deductible anyways so it was worth it to just avoid going to the doctors when I should. I did the same in the beginning when I moved to Germany until I realized I didn’t have to, it was the biggest stress relief. It felt like I could just live.
P.S. I hope you get to return to Germany one day. 🙂

I concur. I lived in America as an exchange student in 1990, consider it my „second homeland“, and sincerely wish America all the best from the bottom of my heart.
The way I see it, America is increasingly going insane, and has been on a trajectory towards fascism at least ever since G.W. Bush (who‘s slogan was „If you are not with us, you are against us“ - a classical fascist and totalitarian way of thinking).
And yes, the country largely revolves around the selfish interests of super rich individuals and corporations.
It has become almost incapable of self-reflection and of changing what demonstrably doesn’t work for the people into something better.
I used to think that all it takes is to make Americans aware of how and why things like healthcare, education, infrastructure, gun safety work better in other countries.
But my impression now is that very many Americans do not even CARE about such facts, because they are mentally living somewhere else. Namely, within a sphere of blind, self-reinforcing fanaticism.
So one might offer them paradise and they wouldn’t take it - because they are more interested in following the idiotic marching orders of their fascist, religious fanatic, and racist cult leaders.
Sorry I am being so harsh. But as a German, who‘s own country including actual ancestry had gone through similar things before, I feel entitled to bring it up so as to issue a warning.

    • @thestaceyminks
      @thestaceyminks  Рік тому +3

I will admit it’s hard to hear it in such harsh words, but you’re not wrong. The part about genuinely caring about topics like education is so true. We want to put blinders on and just be able to always say we’re the best and strongest. Traveling and moving out of the US changed this for me even more.

      @@thestaceyminks
Stacey, as a German I can relate. Yes, it is hard to hear these harsh words and most Germans of my (post war) generation have heard the insults, ridicule and hatred towards our country. The big difference is that Germany has acknowledged the many skeletons in our national closet and while the murdered can never be brought back and the agony and damage inflicted can not be soothed or completely repaired, I argue that we have dealt with this dark chapter in our history. Some say not enough, some say too much, and some ideas are controversial like the "Stolpersteine". Personally I think it is a great idea but I understand that some Jews are furious by the thought that a German boot steps on the name of a Jewish Holocaust victim. But whether one approves or disapproves it all generates a discussion, it forces us all to confront the history and learn from it.
By contrast in the US statutes of slave owners are revered, Washington is hailed, so is Jefferson and Franklin who all owned slaves which is hardly ever spoken of. The generals of the Confederacy are sitting proudly on their high horses. the genocide on the indigenous tribes is not spoken of, and Vietnam is not even close to being examined for all the war crimes and atrocities committed. By contrast "Critical Race Theory" which examines the open and hidden racism in the US is banned in most schools. Americans think America was right, is right and always will be right, this arrogance causes the inability to critically self reflect, learn from mistakes and become a better place.

My parents were always looking forward to the day when they would not have to work any more because they would receive their pensions. Being forced to pay into pension funds in Germany looks bad while you are earning money by working. When you get older and less able you start appreciating this a lot more.

Hi Stacey. Happy to have you here.
I totally get your instinctive reactions. My last visit to the USA was more than 25 years ago, yet I had the same feeling as you explained here back then already concerning public safety.
Does that mean that Germany is perfect? Heck, no. Far from it. We've got more than enough problems here as well.
Yet the overall package is a pretty damn good offer. You can always find room for improvement.
Satisfaction with what we got is something that us Germans have to be reminded of now and again. Otherwise we Germans tend to moan and groan about every little thing that goes wrong.
Complaining seems to be our secret national sport. 😁
That's why people like you are so wholesome for us.

I always think of it as if you’re not improving your deteriorating. Nothing just stands still. Interesting to hear your reasons for deciding to move to Germany! One thing you didn't mention that I think is key is that apparently it's pretty easy for Americans to move here in terms of visas, work permits, etc. If you were from an Asian or African country that would probably be a very different picture, unless you're a highly skilled IT person, etc. I witnessed this dramatic incident where an elderly lady from the Philleppines wanted to travel to Rome to visit her sister there and take part in a service at St. Peter's dome etc. (as a devout Catholic). Although in long term employment and with more than sufficient funds, she was not even granted a tourist visa and felt devastated. In contrast, people with American passports can simply "weigh options" and decide whether or not to move to Germany and/or to try it out for a couple of months. What a privilege!

In the system of private companies providing health care it's more comman to reduce the contribution. But Selbstbehalt in my mind is more common in Germany for car insurance or household stuff. And for cars in earlier years are remember limits or 150 or 300 EUR, nowadays maybe up to 1000 EUR if you choose this. Never heard about higher Selbstbehalt, so in general "no 3500 dollars" even for health. Well, in US maybe to reduce contributions to the high costs of health care.

Yes german health insurance system is indeed a blessing. I pay around 250 Euro a month but the insurance did pay at least a million Euro to make my life possible; there was a problem from day one on.
I still don’t understand why US Americans prefer a healthcare system based on non solidarity. That people need to die because public healthcare is not covering expensive meds to save a life is very shocking for us to see in documentaries. Overall the US culture once was a blue print for us in Europe Today its a culture which most of the Europeans would describe with the term “disgusting.”
I am super happy not life in a country where I have to worry if my kids may get killed in a school shooting by someone who is just a mirror of a pure performance culture, without enough free time to tank up my soul, to see my needs, or not having the financial resources to choose a good psychologist/therapist.

@@thestaceyminks Sorry to say it but the true discussion is not Biden vs. Trump, the true topic is. Why is your country/society broken in the middle.
Trump is just a symptom, not the cause. What happened to the narrative that everyone gets a chance? Didn’t work out for a lot of people?
In the meantime maybe it is the other way around, good old Europe is having problems too, but hey we may have a lot of great ideas too?
Maybe the, hopefully soon Upcoming United Nations of Europe, including Ukraine, are the Blueprint for the states. Americans often laughed about our plurality system in politics. A modern society is complex, with many different Life plans. I never understood how two parties can represent a complex system.
I don’t understand why the people in the states do not discuss a world of media, especially TV, which is absolutely disgusting. Is this journalism or sensationalism? I ask myself why any sane journalist, given the case the person studied journalism in university, wants to write about Trump.
Its clear to me, what Trump is doing has nothing to do with politics. Why in Gods Name is every media platform giving this - persona non grata - a huge stage?
If 70% of all media platforms would decide to no longer write about any schmock, the world would be a much better place. And Trump would loose massive support.
Why you guys don’t discuss the platitude narrative „get rich“. Does anybody truly believes that D.T. is a happy deep down in his soul? I doubt this, this man is ruled by his fears.
How likely is it to get rich as f. as D.T. By the way he didn’t have the money because he is a genius businessman. He got it by his family. Its very similar to the monarchs in Great Britain… working hard is for poor people only…
Why is a society believing blatant lies, alternative realities, by a person which obvious is having deep psychological troubles? Is this society ruled by fear, or is it the case that people gaslight themselves with positive narratives about a future which is going to very very unlikely to happen.
I remember to hear the argument… yes but maybe I am the multimillionaire next week, I don’t want to pay for the poor in this case. Multimillionaire over night. This is super naive, near childish wishful thinking. If I have it in my mind, it must come true?
Last thought before I start my day. When I saw people chanting USA USA USA. I had the first time in my life the feeling that I hear. We are scared, we are scared, we are scared to death….

With no exception in my experience these people are Bad educated and dont understand the difference of social economy market and socialism. Two generations worked hard for what we have. It would be time, urgently, to improve US in these cases.
