Using A SCREWDRIVER To Test For ROD KNOCK On The $1,500 Hyundai Veloster
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Do you have a long screwdriver? That and a ratchet are the only tools you need to test an engine for rod knock or failure once the plugs are out. In the last 2012 Hyundai Veloster video it seemed like we might just get away with fixing a faulty timing chain tensioner on the 1.6L Gamma engine. About half the comments agreed that it's likely timing and it was a relatively common failure. The other half promised it was rod knock so I wanted to go back and check. Today we decide the cheap Veloster's future, pull the entire side of the engine off, or just swap the entire engine.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make UA-cam videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Week in, week out, you have the best videos. Focus on cars... Find em, fix em, flip em... Watch JR Go! Vamanos!
coozmokramer true this guys videos are always good it’s everything I wanna see in an automotive video
for real! WatchJRGo got alot of great stuff going on! Great fuggin channel bro! keep'em coming!
Great diagnosis trick. A lot cheaper than a shop diagnosing it. Gotta love the internet.
JRGo: We should buy an engine?
Wallet: I don't feel so good
I WAS CORRECT! But just for the hell of it I would have loved to see the oil pan removed and rods/mains dissected.
I thought you were going to use the screwdriver as a stethoscope.
Love the videos man. I barely know stuff about cars, but watching you fix all this stuff on the Geo and other cars inspired me to fix a whole bunch of stuff on my beater. Thank you man!
Everyone told you it was a rod, you may still be able to drop the oil pump / balance shaft module and replace the rod bearings I've had pretty good experience with that on these Hyundai / Kia engines
y would do the same , but only iff the crank is not damaged.
Another trick is while it is running pull the plug wires off one at a time. The knock should get quieter when you pull the wire off the bad cylinder.
MJM’s Workshop you can’t do that with coil on plug. The amount of amperage those coils push will kill you.
_Milo you unplug the power wire to each coil individually.
@@_milo590 Ignition coils do not push enough amperage to kill you.... 10,000 volts? sure. But that won't kill you.
My buddy got hit with my Mallory High Fire coil (50k volts) and didn't die. He did say that was the hardest he was ever shocked though (we've both been bit by coils- different cars).
@@doylesmith8678 haha it made me wish I was dead tho
To be fair, replacing an engine to get your 10mm 1/4 deep back is *entirely* reasonable and is precisely what I would do in that situation, too. It's the only logical choice.
Tractor updates!!! Pent up excitement for those to return to life!
I was doing a deep clean of the engine/hydraulics bay of a mini-excavator that we needed to rebuild the hydraulic pump,, and after removing mud from the deepest darkest, never-get-your-hand-in-there crevices, I found my *years* missing Snap-on palm-ratchet and, yes, 10mm socket… A little polish and a lot of WD-40 and good as new.
Thanks for showing that check - and seeing the internet was right about this engine. Learned something today and that is why I joined your channel.
Pull the piston and rod out, unplug the injector and put a Geo badge on it.😉
Javier Hernandez It was a joke...
Gotta grind the lobes of the camshaft on the dead cylinder!
Thanks for the teachable moment. Did not know how to check for that problem
When you do get that engine out of there, consider popping it open and show us what fault caused the piston to shift like that. It would be nice to be able to put the actual faulty part together with the test!
Ambergini lookin good in those Daisy Dukes.
If you go to a Hyundai dealership they actually have a recall for all 2012-2013 Veloster base and turbo model and the best part is that it’s free that’s how I got a new free engine when a rod pushed through my 2013 Veloster turbo’s engine.
I think that’s only on the 2013 turbo right? I have a 2012 with no recalls but my engine is at 91k miles, just had an oil change 1.5k miles ago and pulled over because a knocking noise to find the engine bone dry, no warning lights or leaks etc. who do I contact?
3 years late but hey 🤷
Im the 4th owner of my 2012 Veloster. I brought it into Hyundai for a rod knock software update recall that booster the warranty on the engine from 10 years to 15 years.
So I get 4 years of coverage from something like this 👍
Only has 48k miles on it.
I always love when you and Gabe turn wrenches together. You are comical and sound just like brothers. Oh wait...you are brothers.
Virtual Vapes : From a different mother😉👍🏼
@@Gabe-ABNCW3 I want to come to the family reunion then. Ross/Sanchez 2019!
Virtual Vapes : LOL!
What a cool and super-easy engine test!
If you wouldn't mind, once you get the old engine out, could you please open it up so that we can see exactly what happened inside the engine to cause this issue, I think that would be very interesting to see exactly what caused the engine failure and the resulting damage from it.
And for us 1.6 gdi driver any chance of showing the valves to see if carbon build up is a real issue, that would be really appreciated!
@@theadvocate4698 I agree totally! Not too many of us are actually able to tear an engine down so we don't get the opportunity to see what causes common engine-failures like this. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable breaking down an engine but it seems that JR can practically do this kind-of thing in his sleep and I know seeing the inside causes and results of a problem like this from the inside of the engine would be very fascinating and also help us to learn more about breaking an engine down and maybe even preventing this issue to begin with to boot.
I didn't know this trick, thank you for teaching me something new.
I love how JR's buddies come and help .
Ty. For the trick on rod bearings.
I bought my daughter a 2012 veloster it is a great first car. Only problem is a knock when she lets off the breaks going forward or reverse. And when taking off in first its not a manual , the first gear only jerks a bit to start and tou have to gradually touch the gas if you don't want to feel that rev without rhe feel of speed until the second gear kicks in and smoothly shifts into all of the gears. So the knock up front and first gear is only concearn....hope you get a chance to read this and understand my problem....you guys are GREAT AND EDUCATIONAL FOR ME AND MY DAUGHTER .
Oh yeah only one knock when goin and she has to keep her feet on the break as soon as she takes it off the car jerks a tiny bit to take off.
i think hyundai has a recall on the 2.4 gdi engine for a bearing oiling problem they extended the engine warranty to 120000 mi
That’s a 1.6 in the veloster and the 2.4 is unlimited mileage now
@@dodge467ify can confirm. Own 2014 velsoter.(mine doesnt knock tho lol)
@@dodge467ify WAIT, so JR's engine is under warranty?
Chris W No it’s just the 2.4 theta II engines from like 2012 to 2014. The 1.6 never had any recalls like that one which is what the veloster has
@@dodge467ify got it! I know nothing about Kia engines, just hoping maybe he could get it warrantied.... But, how much you wanna bet J&J hooks it up!??
Your a legend. I was about to take the whole oil pan off to test it
I have a friend that fried his engine and it sounded just like this one and he put gear oil in it like 75w90 and the car did not make any noise and he sold it to somebody he's a dick
@@miguelare3 Scary; but, clever. 😮
My veloster is also blue. Engine burned all the oil at 120k miles and killed it. Got a used motor with 77k miles and it was working fine but an ignition coil need replacement so make sure to use a multi meter to test them.
One other the latest major issue was replacing the passanger CV axle.
Omg. This happen to me today. I was due for an oil change in 1k km. And i heard a knocking noise. It was around the corner of my house. So i creeped home, and checked and the oil was totally gone.
Can i fix this? What would be broken?
There was nothing lost by doing this exercise. This is going to be exciting to get back on the road and flip it.
Glad to hear this engine won't cost $25,000.
Erik Stenberg that shade doe
Can’t wait to see another engine swap
The small projects are you bread and butter to help fund your larger projects
Figured piston slap, or wrist pin, or rod. That engine just known for that unfortunately. I had to swap a couple over at the shop I worked at due to same issue and noise and was piston slap on two cylinders and the other bad wrist pin and rod, took piston out and was loosey-goosey. Did same trick pretty much just tap the top of the piston and turn over motor. I got lucky and found a good motor with only 5k miles on it for about $500 at local junk yard.
I owe a 2013 Turbo. It's a fun car. If this car happens to have an oil leak, check the oil cooler on top of the oil filter for your first culprit. Also OEM oil filters are the best for these.
Excited for ya man ! Can’t wait to see the Audi done up ... No turbos man !
Just love this, with every upload you have +1000 subs...
I wanna see this engine being ran until total failure
Me too
Fort real! I mean why not lol
Hyundai more reliable and easy to work on then goverment motor co. Or junk dodge.
But if it seizes it makes unbolting the torque converter a real PITA
Right Das Boot dat Biotch lol floor it till she Blows
For future reference, you can check the timing without pulling any covers. It’s called a cam crank correlation and is done with a oscilloscope. Any good automotive technician can do it.
Once i saw you in a Lamborghini with carbon fiber mirrors at 316 customs so cool
If A new motor is coming I say we give this one some elegant new windows.
Hanky Bannist8r yes something like a bay window would be beautiful.
Okay, EVERYONE - call J&J and order this engine before JR does, It'll be hilarious. He'll have to manually search for his 10mm deep socket like the rest of us.
Lol, that's evil!
Chris Tallant : LOL!
Thanks for uploading, I really learn a lot watching your videos!
Thanks for watching Andres! 🍻
I have learned something new today. On the other hand, it will be nice to see the bottom end and see how bad is the big end bearing . Perhaps replace the bearing and run the engine as an experiment to see how long it lasts. Make a couple of videos with these ecperiments before replacing the engine.
So today I learned something neat trick hopefully I'll never have to utilise it
I wish that R8 was even in the same class as the EXP in power & performance...
10mm is off to the Netherworld, never getting it back.
I found a 10mm at the picknpull, it was so satisfying
Ah. The never ending stories of the lost 10s.
They even have their own memes.
I doubt my advice would be considered but wouldn't it be cheaper to drop the oil pan and replace the bad rod or main bearing? could only cost a few dollars compared to nearly $1000 on a used engine and dropping the oil pan and trying to replace the bad part would at least let you know if it was a good idea or not and only takes literally minutes to drop the oil pan on these cars....your car and your money but if it was me I would drop the pan and try to save some cash for Audi parts....good luck and good tips on finding the bad cylinder..
Is it hard to fix bearings and stuff?
My car burned all the oil and is now knocking really bad. Put oil in it and still doing it. Ive changed the oil 4 times in 1.5 years and this never happened. Now it happen. . . . Is my car fcked or can i fix this?
You probably could have checked 1 and 4 at the same time and then 2 and 3 instead of going around every time for each piston.
Put in the Turbo motor man
Do a one day engine swap like you did with the Toyota Camry? I enjoyed that video quite a bit
Exploring Adventures with Matt : stay tuned.
Harbor Freight sells a thing like the doctor used to listen to your heart. Rather than a cup at the end of the line the one at HF has a metal wand. You could place the wand at the bottom of the block and hear each cylinder. Very handy to listen to water pump and other components.
Mechanics stethoscope
A wood dowel rod would ideal for what you are doing.
Jr, a better way to test or to confirm is to just disconnect injectors one by one. If knocking stops when you disconnect the injector, then that's very likely the cylinder with bad bearings. The screw driver method isn't always reliable. I had a car pass "screw driver test" but it was still knocking.
Thanks. I learned something today.
Take some time and open up the old engine once you get it out. It would make for some great content.
Prairie State Auto Restorations : Will keep that in mind. Thank you!
I love in Canada Gatineau Quebec. Alot of the Hyundai Cars did this but there was a recall on the call.
Something about they make it to big then begins to knock. It was a huge fail on there end. So when I needed a rental car from Hyundai they had none for almost a year as they were changing engines every day for recalls. Only thing I find shitty is they decide if it should be a recAll or not.
Surprised you didn't check for the dead squirrels first. If you forget to feed them nothing runs right? Replace them with ferrets?
LOVE THE HAIRCUT BROTHER!
That is funny, I work at Diamond Auto Parts in Wisconsin and we just got one of these engines in. By the way keep up the good work.
Looking forward to the engine swap
Was going to say “Is that an SVX in the background? Did you buy that one from your earlier video?” Then at the end you say “That’s a Hoovie hooptie and this is a Hoovykart” so guessing it’s Tyler’s SVX
These are fun cars to drive way underpowered but they handle surprisingly well.
Yay new veloster video
Yeah buddy, glad you're here FM! 🍻
Check with Hyundai, I believe here is a recall on some years of engines. Hyundai might put an engine in it under warranty
Sump off, chuck a set of big end bearings in and see how long it lasts. I did that to an old Toyota Corona and it didn’t die until the owner filled it with diesel.
Didn't these cars come with a 100,000 mile power train warranty? Just took my son's 2013 Elantra in for an engine knock. They replaced the engine for free .Will be picking the car up Wednesday.
Yeah Hyundai just replaced engine on my 2011 sonata
My Sonata was out of warranty time-wise, though it was under the mileage limit, and Hyundai still replaced my clutch for free. Their warranty support is awesome.
You should do something with the camaro
Collin Klitz , camaros are junk.
I'd like to hang out with Gabes and Watch JRs Goes and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
At first, I wondered what car make you were on about, as it sound like Hunday, and we in UK say Hyundai ike High-undai. I felt it was it was more than timing or timing chain as it would have been rattling rather than knocking. Be nice cheap sporty runabout when it's done. I see another 3hr challenge coming on Haha.
Could you drop the oil pan and replace the one bearing ?
Did you check into the recall on the engine?
neat test, I might have to do this on future cars I buy cuz I am as lucky as Hoovie when it come to buying used cars
craftsman, the working man's choice.
Reminds me of those Degents from up country

I hope you are going to tear apart this bad engine so we can see the damage?
hyundai motors have been blowing for years, dealers say all of these motors are being replaced. same problem with kia. check the oil for shavings.

Lend it to Hoovie and let him track it - that'll kill that engine dead.
JR I hope you pay your friends well. If it were my friends they would quit showing up after about two engine swaps.
knew it was rod knock. all the people saying it was timing noise...lolwut. also voting for a full send video. how long will it run at full throttle?
Those might be coming QQH soon. In other words, Hyundai knows there's a problem with those engines and they will extend the warranty on them to past 100k miles. Just look at the YF sonata. Anyways, it might be worth a shot taking it in to the dealership. Hyundai might approve it
Im a fan of the low mileage JDM imported used engines. They have around 50k on them and everyone I know including myself have had great luck with them and they weren't that expensive.
Glenbo24 what has the Hyundai got to do with JDM engines??
Memory of a gold fish.
Fairly new subscriber...would like to see you do a vid on your camaro
I would just drop the pan and change the rod bearing. Lot cheaper and a lot quicker.
Saw this way to check on a channel called oldskool funk hes a backyard mechanic good videos.
I think you guys are engine change crazy. 🤓
Travis bennett shut up bitch
Veloster from 2012 easy to work on, while i'm over here about to change my compressor on my 2017 elantra and it's in a hard place and bad spacing to get bolts and the tensioner.
Beat it until total failure, send the rod through the block if you’re just junkyarding the engine after
I did that years ago and the rod went straight though the radiator and oil cooler too, expensive fun 🤣
I’m imagining that he’ll have to return it as core and when I worked for a big box auto parts store we couldn’t take obliterated cores for return. It needed to be rebuildable.
They really need to sell a set of sockets that are only 10mm.
At O'Reilly's they have a set of five 10 mill even like a 6 inch one
Seriously, I'm not going to rest until I recover the one I dropped 😂
@@WatchJRGo It would be like finding a treasure
The rod knock sound ended up being rod knock. Crazy.
i wonder if their 10 year warranty is transferable and if they’ll fix the engine.
Not unless it is certified pre-owned. Other than that, the 2nd owner gets 5 years or 60000 miles
"On today's episode of Watch JR GO, I ask my girlfriend Amber to run to Harbor Freight to grab me some screw drivers so I can test a rod knock and she comes back with some vodka and orange juice instead so we said f*ck the rod knock and we decided to have a small party instead" HAHAHA!!

When you say new engine you mean the entire engine assembly or just cylinder head to be replaced? Rookie here
How involved is replacing the entire engine in the veloster. I've got a 2013 that's got a similar problem, so likely engine replacement is more cost effective.
Well, that engine's toast then. But you can probably recoup a large chunk of the cost of the replacement by selling the head off this one, IF it proves to be OK. Somehow I suspect this car's issues might relate to poor maintenance...
