Hyundai Veloster Engine Swap SMOKES Like CRAZY On Start Up

  • I bought this 2012 Hyundai Veloster for $1,500 down a cylinder. We determined that the 1.6L 4 cylinder Gamma engine has a failed rod bearing and I promised to destroy it. 100,000 Orbeez later the engine finally gave up the ghost although it ran way longer than we thought. We pulled out the Orbeez filled engine and replaced with a new one from J&J Auto Wrecking. After some engine wrestling and catching the starter on fire, we filled the entire garage and half the neighborhood with Orbeez smoke when it finally surged back to life!
    Thanks to J&J Auto Wrecking for the new engine! www.jandjautowr...

      Reminded me of a story. My dad worked for a municipal garage. He bought a used '58 Chev Wagon and blew the engine. He bought another engine (think scrap yard not new), and went to the garage over the weekend (1/4 maintenance mechanics in) to replace. The story was enough mechanics and drivers around engine bay you could not get within 10 feet or get a wrench up your behind. Engine swapped in a day, and he bought lunch.

      @@Elaba_ The first one (a 2004 Santa Fe) was amazing. I think maybe six things went wrong with it in almost 150,000 miles. My 2010 Santa Fe was a total lemon but the 2012 Elantra that replaced it was not bad. I'd consider them again but after driving Hyundais for over ten years, I need some time to see other brands.

    I did this project in probably 6 hours, by myself with a help of inserting the engine into the pilot. If you have a side impact drill it'll cut your time in half, and those exhaust nuts will be done in 3 minutes. It's designed nicely, everything can be tucked away nicely and its hard to miss a plug/hose.

  • @WalkiTalki
    @WalkiTalki 6 місяців тому +1

    I have swapped tons of these. Once Hyundai announced which ones qualified for free replacement and which did not everyone wanted to fix theirs. If you pull the axles and then the two exhaust pipe bolts underneath then the lower torque arm everything else is reached from the top. Leave the trans and exhaust manifold connected to the motor and lift the entire package out as a unit. We once forgot to install the trans throw out arm and had the entire thing out on the ground and back in and running in 2.5 hours. If they had less electronics they would be as easy as the old six bolt engine/trans swaps on the VWs back in the day.

    I know your going to flip it but you may want to run some GDI Cleaner through it to clean the valves and turbo since it’s not designed like a traditional engine. I believe CLR sells it.

    • @Scypher0th
      @Scypher0th 5 років тому +1

      GDI cleaner does nothign its been provin time n time again that its near impossible for chemicals to do any type of cleaning on Direct injetion engines. the only way to actually clean thhem is to media blast the chamber. That is why i dont under stand why ppl run injection/fuel system cleaner in new engines...it dont do shit

    • @iSteven180
      @iSteven180 5 років тому

      I have recently trialed it on a friends 2012 Veloster with 80,000 original miles and it had never been done. What he noticed after me completing the cleaning is a lower idle, better throttle responsiveness, and noticed his car is Peppier overall. This is the same chemical the Hyundai dealer uses and your supposed to preform this service every 10,000 miles or so due the the carbon build up inside of the valves. The reason being is that since the gas is directed inside of the cylinder instead of passing through the valves like a traditional motor does. You will get a ton of carbon build up that will rob your motor of power and economy.

    WatchJRGo,
    How long did the car take, with the new engine in, to stop smoking? Was it after a couple of minutes? Did it go away gradually?
    I own a Lexus CT and I changed the head gasket but the car keeps on smoking after hours of idling. It's an aluminium block and the block is probably cracked.

    Did ya ever fix the smoke? I just swapped or had someone swap a 1.6 2016 accent with 39k that got hit in the front. The blown motor was smoking like yours and when we put the new motor in it still smokes not to bad but it would probably make someone think its got a blown head or a smarter person think it's buring oil and the previous motor was buring oil. I'm just a locksmith. You think maybe the exhaust is dirty. Should I run something threw it?

    • @ShinyRedGrapple
      @ShinyRedGrapple 5 років тому

      @Stephen Clark It goes out of the exhaust valves into the exhaust, catalytic converters are in the exhaust system..

      @Stephen Clark ...You need them in Colorado. Every two years is "emissions test" time. Pass or no registration.

    • @ShinyRedGrapple
      @ShinyRedGrapple 5 років тому

      @Stephen Clark Catalytic converter performance is measured by the OBD system, via the O2 sensors. If it fails it will set off the MIL, probably code P0420. In other words, the check engine light will come on. If so he can try to run some sort of cleaner through there, but most likely he will have to have his catalytic converter, (or converters if it has multiple- and they failed), replaced. Expensive repair indeed. Unless he can find someone dumb enough buy it like that..

    • @Gabe-ABNCW3
      @Gabe-ABNCW3 5 років тому

      Vince: OBDII was monitored throughout test drive. Smoke stopped soon after we began and the cat maintained optimal temps.

      @@Gabe-ABNCW3 Cool, then it should be fine for a long time. At worst maybe shaved a few years off the cat's life... or not, depending on if that Orbees stuff is considered smoking, or just vaping lol. This was a great video. Satisfying to see a major repair done so quickly.

    So I have a 2012 Hyundai Veloster and my motor blown up today and I was wondering if I could buy the turbo motor and would it just bolt right on? Or would I have any issues? So basically since it blew up, I wanna swap the transmission to a manual and swap the motor to the turbo one, is that possible? Please let me know thank you!

    • @WatchJRGo
      @WatchJRGo  5 років тому

      I know you have to change to the turbo car ECU and wiring harness at a minimum. I asked the same questions and the Veloster guys think it bolts up but I don't think anyone has ever done it before. 🍻

    My friend is currently replacing the engine AND transmission on his 13 Veloster. Tranny went bad specifically BECAUSE that dual clutch tranny isn’t good for high traffic areas and Hyundai knew it was an issue. Engine because of bad lifters.
