I enjoy your golf learning videos in the past 1 year .... I learnt a lot from Piers and Andy. You provide youtube viewers with easy to understand explanation and clear visualisation. I wish I live in UK and become your golf student. However I dont live in UK. I live in south asian countries ...... In short, I take some lesson from local golf instructor. He is local PGA instructor working in golf course. He is good teacher too.... he is teaching me how to strike the ball from scracth. After 1 year of practising golf ..... I feel comfortable playing golf with Piers and Andy golf styles. Thank you very much .... you guys are great golf instructors !!
I've watched countless video's on different chipping techniques, you guys are probably the nearest to my natural technique, having watched this video and used your method on the course, my already decent chipping, has just got a whole lot better and more accurate, thank you and keep up the good work, its greatly appreciated.
Old video but what a gem! I started playing a week ago and have crammed many hours of video tutorials that didn't seem to translate much to the course. However, since I started chipping with the 7 iron like you say here (don't have a 6 yet), and aiming a yard inside the green as opposed to the flag, I dropped 10 strokes and scored my first birdie! For a total rookie like me, getting the basics right from the start is paramount to becoming a decent player. When you talked about topping the ball and hitting a rocket, I was like YES!!! Sure? when I use the PW I often get prolike shots, but 30% of the time I top it and hit a bullet. Like you guys said in a video, everybody's good shots are good. It's when the bad ones aren't too bad that you know you're doing things right. Thanks for the great videos.
Keep coming back to this tip even 6 years on, just much safer and much more reliable. Perfect for me as I have so many different techniques in my head.
Excellent, Guys. Thank you. I love your quote about increasing the quality of your bad shots. Reducing the risk of over-striking the ball is so important for me. I can't even count the times I've had to cross the green and hit the "same" shot back again.
I am a golf beginner and you can't imagine the improvements that I am making by watching (and putting into practice) your videos - you may argue that it's simple to improve when you start from scratch, but you guys are really amazing (Yepp, you can tell I live in California :) ). Keep up the good work!
You're right, you can't. I thought I had used the word "awesome" instead of "amazing", but probably my sub-conscience took me back to a more British use of the English language. Have fun playing golf!
Unbelievable! In 2 short videos (this one and the one on chipping over bunkers), you have transformed my short game! Specifically, in this video, setting up with your shoulders forward, rather than the hips forward, was a huge help. I was struggling with making solid contact, skulling often. The setup change was an instant cure. With the chipping over the bunker lesson, I had been struggling with hitting the high soft chip, again often skulling the shot. By going from high to low rather than the opposite, another instant cure. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Huge fan of you two - saying this vid (and many others) is helpful is an understatement. I have turned 3 or 4 of my buddies on to you guys and they all agree with me. Thank you - Cheers!
Been working hard on the 60 degree wedge for these types of shots and decent results. Now I’ll have to give this a go and see if I can get better results. Thanks for the videos guys they have helped my game a lot.
This is by far one of the best chipping advices I've seen on UA-cam. The other one is equally good is "Putt whenever u can!". To me the biggest challenge is to bloody remember these advices when i actually play. I don't know If I'm the only one that forget everything when playing...It gets worse when I get closer to the hole!! Lol
Guys thanks for all the great tips! This 4 part series really helped simplify the various chip/pitches. I had way too many shot thoughts in my head and was only effective about 50% of the time. I practiced your tips this week and in today's round I had 2 chip ins; one to save par and one for a birdie. If only it was that easy to fix the rest of my game.....! Keep up the great work
I played my third ever "game" today and got a lovely hole in two thanks to this video! finished a 9 hole par 3 course in 33 shots. A lot to work on though. Will keep watching.
Well done Piers and Andy on a truly useful lesson. It makes total sense: what’s easier - 1) fly the ball to the hole and account for spin, flight and ground impact or 2) use a less lofted club, pitch a metre or two onto the green and play it like a putt? Like shooting fish in a barrel!
took this tip to the course and on 3 holes used my 7 iron (its a very delofted club so pratically a 6 iron) and made some great chips toward the hole, had one round the whole and make a 90 degree turn and stayed within 1 foot, almost fell over because that was a birdie chance (haven't hit one since I started back up after 3 years
I'm just getting into golfing and just waiting for my training this week to get the green card and watching your videos gets my fire burning hotter and hotter. I can't wait to be on the green already. I'm practising the moves with a broom stick at home. Thanks for the videos. I think i have a little head start on my actual training :) If you could do a in-depth video about first gear and outfit selection, that would just knock me off my chair =) Thanks again!
After a couple of weeks practicing this technique, I have finally cracked it. No more thins and chunks, however the ball seems to be popping out to the right slightly, when I add more loft I lose the line. Any tips?
Good instructional video. Here's a thought. I've been playing this game for some 40 years. There's so many parts to the game of driver, long irons pitching chipping bunker putting then you've got different lies, slopes to contend with. All this needs different types of set up and technique plus hours and hours of practice to become any good. I think it was legendary golfer who said golf is too difficult, too expensive and it takes too long and he's right. Hardly ever see anyone under the age of even 40 on a medal day at my course.
Excellent Lesson. I have used my rescue wood with a putting stroke and got close when I'm six or so feet off the green and the pin is far back in the green.
I'd rather like pay each vid than have to get a monthly fee for your website in order to see the other parts. More in a VOD state of mind... This vid, like the others you do is very good. I liked the lower shoulder explanation rather than the usual lean forward. I'll try this today around the practice green.
wow, I can see other people. Thought you guys were there alone :D Awesome guide guys. I'm really struggling with my shortgame. Gonna try this out this weekend! Thanks guys!
I lean the handle forward a lot I like hitting down ball first and reduce the bounce on a 58,52,46 if there any ridges. 7 iron otherwise feet at 11 and club face at 1 of target line.
Piers and Andy - great video, thanks! How do you feel about using a putter for those 'just off the green' shots? In my game it seems to take a lot of the risk out of the equation.
Guys, really enjoyed this video and put it into practise last weekend, which helped reduce the risk of picking a sw and thinning it to the other side of the green. One quick question, if you're using, say an 8-iron for these shots, do you hold the club a little further down the shaft? Or do you still set up the hands the same as if you were playing a normal 8-iron shot? Cheers
Hey guys! Great vid as always. quick question though... Does this tecnique apply to much shorter chips, say 5 yarders? Just taking a more lofted club I would imagine? Thanx again!
Great video! Do you guys have a general rule as far as run off for the irons? i.e., hit a 6 iron 1/4 of the way, hit an 8 iron 1/3 of the way, hit a PW 1/2 the way. Is that about accurate?
would this advice be the same if you replace sand wedge with pitching wedge? I.e. would you still suggest a mid iron over a pitching wedge, if so what type of shot is a pitching wedge more appropriate for? Thank you
Well done guys bottom line is (for amateurs) stop trying to chip with your lob/sand/gap wedges and use your P,9,8,and 7 irons and you'll never fear a chip shot again plus you'll be a lot more consistent and confident in your chipping!
This was really good guys. Any update on when the others will be going up? Cheers. Keep up the good vids.............and the challenges! Maybe a Ben Hogan worst ball challenge. Hit two tee shots each and pick the worst shot of the others shots, play your two second shots from there, pick the worst of those, and so on until you finish. Just a thought.
I have a quick question. I played with a low handicap last weekend and this guy was chipping far away from the green (30-50yds) and had the first and sometimes even second bounce land before the green, then ball rolling on the green. It was damn efficient ! Any tips about this shot ? (clubs, swing, "reliability", etc?) thanks guys
I was just watching David leadbetters short game video and he talks about the regular chip and also the putt chip where the regular chip is the setup with the ball back and hands forward for long chips, is that something you recommend or is the setup you show here also working better in general?? cheers...
+Anders Berglund personally we like to see the ball position fairly central with the shaft slightly forward. ball back and hands forward is great if you are trying to keep it very low.
Some thoughts from me about higher vs lower lofted shaft. Personally i prefer higher lofted shafts when chipping. First of all the contact with the green is quite consistent but not perfect. The longer the ball travels in the air, the longer it stays perfect on target line (if you hit it well). After contact you also have to consider breaks and its way easier to read the last 2 meters in front of the hole than the last 10. And lastly and for me most important, i sometimes struggle to controle the length with lower lofted shaft. I am not sure if it's just a feeling , but at least it sounds logical that higher lofted shafts are more forgiving when applying inaccure clubhaed speed. An SW played to fast may end up 1 meter behind the hole where a 8 Iron could have gone 3-4 meters too far. Would be nice to hear your opinions on my points.
+TVNorris Early 2015 or late 2014 the famous instructor Michael Breed was interviewing Jordan Speith as he was chipping onto a green. Breed asked him why he didn't choose a 5i or 6i for the chip he was making. Jordan said it was probably the right move but he just felt more comfortable with his wedge. Other instructors have said for the weekend warrior that has limited time to practice getting proficient at throwing it at the flag is a valid strategy. If I'm looking up a 3 tiered green and I would not be comfortable putting it why would I want to chip and roll it? Speith has a pretty solid short game and if he's throwing it then we aren't in bad company.
+Dylan Ingram 7 is about 30 percent flight, 70 percent roll. A 5 iron is about 20 percent flight, 80 percent roll. So from their length I'd recommend a 5 iron over the 7, because you'd have to land the ball further out with the 7 than with the 5 iron. Btw this video really helped me out regarding consistancy for my chipping, so thanks a lot! Very clear video, not rushed at all but still not too long for it to get bored. Also very nice audio quality!
Say that you are set up 5 feet further away from where you are, which would put you in the rough. Would you still use the 6 iron and same technique or would you use a sand wedge?
I enjoy your golf learning videos in the past 1 year .... I learnt a lot from Piers and Andy. You provide youtube viewers with easy to understand explanation and clear visualisation. +nicky rawson Thanks Nicky. Glad this helped out.
Finally. The straightforward , easy to understand and practice , chipping video I’ve been searching for. Thank you.
Old video but what a gem! I started playing a week ago and have crammed many hours of video tutorials that didn't seem to translate much to the course. You guys have the best golf videos on youtube, I have binge watched your guys videos for the last week lol my game has vastly improved thank you!
Thanks Scott. Great to hear you are improving also.
"everyones good shots are good its how good your bad ones are" love that thought thanks guys
golf gospel right there
Zachary Arnold that's what my coach says
Excellent, Guys. Thank you. I love your quote about increasing the quality of your bad shots. Reducing the risk of over-striking the ball is so important for me. I can't even count the times I've had to cross the green and hit the "same" shot back again.
I am a golf beginner and you can't imagine the improvements that I am making by watching (and putting into practice) your videos - you may argue that it's simple to improve when you start from scratch, but you guys are really amazing (Yepp, you can tell I live in California :) ). Keep up the good work!

Wow this really did help me become more consistent round the greens, thanks!!
Sucha great video guys. Clear, concise and is gunna allow everyone to take control of their game!
Thanks Tom. hope this helps and thanks for the feedback.
one of the best golf advice on the web!
I love what Andy said "Everybody's good shots are good, its how good your bad ones are." Never thought about that, thanks for the video.
Huge fan of you two - saying this vid (and many others) is helpful is an understatement. I have turned 3 or 4 of my buddies on to you guys and they all agree with me. Thank you - Cheers!
Gonna give this a try. I agree that it is much safer to use than a sand wedge. Thanks guys. Keep up the great videos.
Been working hard on the 60 degree wedge for these types of shots and decent results. Now I’ll have to give this a go and see if I can get better results. Thanks for the videos guys they have helped my game a lot.

You guys really explain everything so clear and make so much sense . I'm off to the practice green later on.nice one
Hope this helps David.
Great video guys. Can't wait for the rest of the series.
Thanks Malcolm. The rest of the series is on our website.
I played my third ever "game" today and got a lovely hole in two thanks to this video! finished a 9 hole par 3 course in 33 shots. A lot to work on though. Will keep watching.
Brett Foster Thanks Brett! Glad to help.
This video is full of great tips, can't wait to try them out. Thanks guys.
Well done Piers and Andy on a truly useful lesson. It makes total sense: what’s easier - 1) fly the ball to the hole and account for spin, flight and ground impact or 2) use a less lofted club, pitch a metre or two onto the green and play it like a putt? Like shooting fish in a barrel!
i am a complete novice to the game and this video has opened my eyes to what i was doing wrong..Many thanks
Rob Hughes Great Rob!
I use a Callaway hybrid 7 club for my chip and runs. I swing just like i would a putter. Great results.
Wow. Beginner here. I cannot wait to go to the range today and try these shots out. Never used a 6 iron around the green before!
THANK YOU for this!!! I can't wait to see the rest of this series!
Great content chaps. I lose quite a few shots from just off the green and am sick of taking 3 from there. This will really help. thank you. 👍
Thank you for this guys, very good lesson. Me and my golf is my favorite golf channel :)
The advice helped, holed out a couple times during practice. Thank you!
excellent vid guys. Just wanted to know when are you guys gonna record part 2 of this series.
Great video guys. Glad I came across your channel. Looking forward to watching more
took this tip to the course and on 3 holes used my 7 iron (its a very delofted club so pratically a 6 iron) and made some great chips toward the hole, had one round the whole and make a 90 degree turn and stayed within 1 foot, almost fell over because that was a birdie chance (haven't hit one since I started back up after 3 years
I holed a nice chip today using an 8i from 5ft off the green using these tips so cheers guys!
This is great! Can't wait to get out there and try this!
Good stuff guys that's the part of our game that needs sorting so will be trying this on a practice green soon. Keep the great vids coming.
Thanks Guys! Keep up the hard work!
I'm just getting into golfing and just waiting for my training this week to get the green card and watching your videos gets my fire burning hotter and hotter. I TRIED THIS. IT IS SO MUCH EASIER . THANKS. VERY ACCURATE ALSO
Once again great video, good tips, can't wait to put it to practice.
Hope this helps Simon.
After a couple of weeks practicing this technique, I have finally cracked it. No more thins and chunks, however the ball seems to be popping out to the right slightly, when I add more loft I lose the line. Any tips?
another great video that explains in full what to do. Thank you
Good instructional video. Here's a thought. I've been playing this game for some 40 years. You guys are the best!
Great video, use an 8 iron for this sort of shot but will be giving it a go with a 6 tomorrow. Look forward the the next part
Like he said before, it's all preference. I also use an 8 iron cause I'm much more confident with it. 6 iron has too low a loft for a lot of people.
Great video and great sense...when can we expect parts 2, 3 and 4???
Great point on controlling how bad your bad shots are.
Really good video chaps, really clear , will definitely work on this
There is only one united! Leeds!
Another great video , thanks guys
Thanks Ian.
Cor that second chip Piers, Great effort!
Great instructional video..what grip pressure do you recommend?
I'd rather like pay each vid than have to get a monthly fee for your website in order to see the other parts. More in a VOD state of mind...
This vid, like the others you do is very good. I liked the lower shoulder explanation rather than the usual lean forward. I'll try this today around the practice green.
Hi Matt. Thanks for the comment. This may be something we do also in the future in our store too.
Good stuff, guys. Many amateurs automatically pull their SW and it then becomes a precision game instead of a game of percentages.
Great advise and video again guy's.
Great content! Thanks guys.
Thanks guys, so helpful.
:D hitthatchicken Thanks!
This helped massively. Thanks guys
Thanks guys you've taken about 7/8 shots of my game with your tips
wow, I can see other people. Thought you guys were there alone :D
Awesome guide guys. I'm really struggling with my shortgame. Gonna try this out this weekend! Thanks guys!
Ha ha. We are always first there when we film so the course is quiet.
I lean the handle forward a lot I like hitting down ball first and reduce the bounce on a 58,52,46 if there any ridges. 7 iron otherwise feet at 11 and club face at 1 of target line.
Thanks guys!
great advice, much appreciated.
Thanks Don
Great tips once again,I can't understand why someone has pressed dislike unless there from Exeter !!!!!!
Ha ha. You will always get the dislikes not matter what.
Could you do a video on what the left hip should be doing in swing? And what we should be feeling? Thank you!
Piers and Andy - great video, thanks! How do you feel about using a putter for those 'just off the green' shots? In my game it seems to take a lot of the risk out of the equation.
Did you choke down on the grip? How do you judge distance for length, uphill, downhill, fast/slow greens? Great instruction!
Cheers
All personal preference really Danny. What ever feels most comfortable and works for you. No right or wrong with that.
i tried this and it works very good, much easier to chip this way
great vid!
after this series pls do similar Pitch Like the Pros
Loved this lesson. My chipping is awful. Just bought a chipper aswell lol will try the 6 iron next time
Great video. Please include chipping ratio for each club. Thanks
Brilliant video!
Thanks Scott
Liked the video, so much so that I'd like to watch the following parts of the series.. but can't find them?
Great video! Where can I find parts 2,3 and 4?
AH yes, the moment when it all goes wrong and I skull it 100 metres past the hole
great job guys!
Thanks Al
Hey guys! Great vid as always. quick question though... Does this tecnique apply to much shorter chips, say 5 yarders? Just taking a more lofted club I would imagine? Thanx again!
It all depends on how much roll to air time you need really.
just recently subscribed. love how you break things down.
since you're on the fringe, 20yds out, why not put?
Great video! Do you guys have a general rule as far as run off for the irons? i.e., hit a 6 iron 1/4 of the way, hit an 8 iron 1/3 of the way, hit a PW 1/2 the way. Is that about accurate?
Generally sand wedge is a 1:1 ratio vs air distance and run distance. Pitching wedge is 1:2, 9 iron is 1:3 and so on. Hope this helps!
would this advice be the same if you replace sand wedge with pitching wedge? I.e. would you still suggest a mid iron over a pitching wedge, if so what type of shot is a pitching wedge more appropriate for? Thank you
Well done guys bottom line is (for amateurs) stop trying to chip with your lob/sand/gap wedges and use your P,9,8,and 7 irons and you'll never fear a chip shot again plus you'll be a lot more consistent and confident in your chipping!
So should you only use a Chip and Run when your ball is on the fringe of the green? What is the furthest away you would recommend?
(clubs, swing, "reliability", etc?)
thanks guys
I was just watching David leadbetters short game video and he talks about the regular chip and also the putt chip where the regular chip is the setup with the ball back and hands forward for long chips, is that something you recommend or is the setup you show here also working better in general?? cheers...
+Anders Berglund personally we like to see the ball position fairly central with the shaft slightly forward. ball back and hands forward is great if you are trying to keep it very low.
I've subscribed to your site and can't get access to the rest of the series.
What club are you using piers? Is this the same as linear approach? Thanks
I online have a 7/8 iron, 5/6 iron, pinching wedge and a driver and putter
This is a great video but idk if I have any green that is 20 yards from the edge to any pin position
I only carry a 5 and 7 which would be better for this? 5?
Dylan Ingram 7 is perfect.
Great vid, this.
Say that you are set up 5 feet further away from where you are, which would put you in the rough. Would you still use the 6 iron and same technique or would you use a sand wedge?
Thank you!
Are you not supposed to open the club face on your back swing and close it on your follow through like you would on other shots?
Loved that guy in the background
is there any wrist hinging on this shot?
You guys should make a video of you two playing 9 holes or something sometime, would be interesting! :)
We are doing some Vlogs on the course over the next few weeks.
Meandmygolf Awesome, can't wait to watch!
excellent vid. . we are not all like flaming phil . . try using 8.9.irons too
excellent thank you
