    holy poop hahahahah when you did the first name I was like “okay I got this P...L.... why is he stopping??” Then you did the rest of the name and I was shocked hahahaha but can you make more of these? I’m having fun learning sign and applied to volunteer at a deaf school but I’m definitely a beginner. I would really love videos like this that use the vocab you teach or finger spelling so I can practice watching it. your videos are awesome and super helpful! Thanks :^)

      I’ve been studying for 5 years, 2 of those years in a full immersion classroom with a Deaf teacher and I still can’t hold down a conversation and understanding finger spelling is one of the most difficult ones for me to grasp still after 5 years. Doing it is fine, understanding it is another issue

    Paul - watching it once then pausing the video to think on beginner
    Peter - watching it twice on beginner and pausing to think
    Timothy - i wasn't able to figure it out until I looked at the comments then realized i was reading "o" as "s" oops lol, i also struggle with being told a word or name letter by letter and being able to make sense of it so hopefully ill be able to improve through the course of my class!

    Paul: 2nd time
    Peter: 2nd time
    Timothy: 1st time actually!
    I recently realized it helps to try to see fingerspelled terms as words and not as a sequence of letters. Literally like reading. You don't look at each individual letter when you read a word and consciously register it. You see the whole word. I'm trying to do that more with my fingerspelling receptivity. So even if I miss individual letters, I can still see the big picture.
    This realization came after watching Jeremy Lee Stone's video on how to advance fingerspelling receptivity. It helped a TOOOON if anyone's interested.

    Timmy(?) - Fast (I caught the T, I, and Y but I had to rewind on the slow version and got Timothy)
    I'm a bit slow with fingerspelling and I know a few other basic signs like 'Slow Down', 'Hi, how are you?', 'What's up?', 'I'm good', 'I'm/You're hungry', 'My name's ___, what's yours?', 'Watch this', 'Thank you', and 'You're welcome'. I also know the odd sign here and there like 'Christmas', 'Green', and 'Hellejuia'. I can also count up to 100 in sign. There's no way that I'm fluent though, but your stuff does help a lot

    Timothy. first two at full speed and last at beginner pace because I read Tiffany 😂 taking asl in high school

    Name 1: Paul! (Full speed, I surprised myself as I'm brand new to ASL!)
    Name 2: Peter (Had an inkling by the time you started at intermediate speed, that confirmed it)
    Name 3: Totally thought it was Tiffany until slow speed, but then figured out Timothy! Maybe I need to shift some attention back to the middle letters lol

    I got all at 1st speed, but it's because you slightly paused on the first letter, giving my brain enough time to start.

    • @ChrisGorges
      @ChrisGorges  4 роки тому

      That's awesome! Yeah, when fingerspelling, pausing on the first and last letter even briefly will really help the other person catch the word or name, great job picking up on that 👍

  • @plmfb
    @plmfb 4 роки тому +1

    I feel really grateful to have followed the full speed BUT...I feel like there is some amount of the brain guessing / stringing the broad strokes together. I don't always get the full speed, but when I do (exciting!) it definitely feels like the mind making connections. I imagine that is part of the learning (vs being totally certain of every letter).

    • @ChrisGorges
      @ChrisGorges  4 роки тому

      The fact that you are able to subconsciously fill in the blanks when you miss a letter is great! Sometimes when we miss a letter we shift all of our focus on the one letter we missed rather than paying attention to the rest of the word and it can kill our receptive comprehension. Keep up the great work and the more you practice and expose yourself to the language the easier it gets.

      @@ChrisGorges Thank you so much for this encouraging and supportive reply. I am snooping through the list of UA-cam Channels you mentioned, slowing the speed, and just WATCHING. I need more regular exposure for sure and look forward to it flowing more and more. :) Thank you for the work you do!

    Something that helps is to try and look at the overall "shape" of the word rather than trying to catch every single letter.
    Have you ever wondered why (in written English) it's so much easier to read than to spell? It's because you are looking at whole words when you read not individual letters.

    I am almost done with my first semester of learning asl and I’m in fingerspelling and receptively I’m getting better just when it goes super fast I’m like whoa what? Again please I missed that I’m sorry I’m a beginner but honestly I wish that my community college had more fingerspelling classes I think in the other asl classes I’ll have them because I expressively am improving along with receptively I guess it just takes more practice right?
