Nine Inch Nails Composer Reactions "We're In This Together" | The Decomposer Lounge
NIN ‘The Fragile’ is an absolute masterpiece.
yep... best guitar sound on album ever made
Absolute
Wholeheartedly agree!
The slip has the best drums. And honestly Trent and co. have a multitude of masterpieces throughout their discographies and side projects. Man is musical prodigy / powerhouse
My favorite album among all the albuns of the World ever made.
Takes me back to the days when artists made albums to be experienced as a whole and could take you on an ethereal experience from start to finish.
Meshuggah has an album "Catch 33" that is all one continuous song divided into segments, highly recommend
You got any other ethereal suggestions? I like ethereal sounds. Ive heard it a little in anathema and a little in porcupine tree and some other bands.
@@UnemployedClown1 great album
Try out Slice The Cake - Odyssey to the West
It even has a 28 minute intro album with story and a soundscape kinda thing, its awesome :) (Its called Odyssey to the Gallows)
@@MrChrislur thanks ill listen
"I think there's something strangely musical about noise" -Trent Reznor
He described the Industrial genre
@@-.MICHAEL.- He really did, didnt he
Nin always has such an emotional pull. Never been disappointed with them.
One of those rare artists that I listen to both their early and contemporary work. Simply amazing.
@@screamwall sound track of all stages of life. :) well said.
All the studio recordings have been solely Trent. He's a goddamn legend.
@@ValhallaBeckons yep. 'They' is really 'He'.
you know NIN is only Trent right? Well and Atticus with the new stuff
This song is a journey, like whole Fragile album. There's a lot to decompose on Fragile. Seems like I need to get myself headphones to dig deeper into nuances.
ixi music is doing The Downward Spiral if you feel like taking a listen. She just did a 50 minute breakdown of Closer.
The Fragile is a goddamned masterpiece. Contender for favourite album ever.
The fragile doesn't get credit. It's a masterpiece. Who is ixi music didn't find it.
Get those headphones buddy. You will not regret it!
The Fragile has aged so well. I listen to it from start to finish at work sometimes, and it's definitely a journey. As nice as headphones sound, I still prefer NIN through some hefty floor speakers and a good sub with the gain turned up. Sit on the couch, close your eyes, and go for the ride.
"Any more Nine inch Nails songs you guys want me to listen to..."
Uhh yeah..all of them dude. Now lol
My vote with you being a Composer would be for "Ruiner". Or anything on 'The Downward Spiral'. Super interesting arrangement and engineering/layering to EVERY SINGLE SONG
I second this! I reckon eraser would be a brilliant one in terms of composition as well
Ruiner is best song on the album and arguably in top 5 songs for me from NIN. I've never heard him live play it tho
I really would love to hear thoughts on Ruiner. Particularly if he can also peep the demo...
Downward spiral has to be one of the most incredible things ever recorded and you can't listen to just one song it's a true concept album. Well damn it I guess I know what I'm going to be doing this Saturday night. Lol
@@JoshuaC0rbit You can most definitely listen to just a song or two, but it really shines when you go through the progression of... well, the downward spiral
Honestly man this whole record is gorgeous from start to finish. The Wretched, Where Is Everybody, Pilgrimage, The Big Comedown, all fantastic feats of engineering and composition.
I forgot how truncated the ending of this version of the song is. If you listen to the album version, it goes on for a lot longer and feels a whole lot more cathartic after all of the chaos of the rest of the song. If you liked this, definitely look into the full version. The unabridged outro really makes a difference.
Oh yeah, the ending of that song is so important. It also leads perfectly into the next track!
I wish he had made a Still version of this track. Oh well.
YES I was expecting the ending and then it cut and I feel like he missed out :/
Obligatory came here to find this comment!
100%
The ending is crucial
OH MY GOD FINALLY A REAL NINE INCH NAILS SONG REVIEW THAT ISN'T CLOSER
AHHHHHHHHH 😲😲😲😲
... but I love "Closer"...🥺
I like the musical aspect of that song but not really the lyrics
Or "Hurt" because "I just watched Johnny Cash, soooo....."
I'm guessing this will satisfy us NIN listeners to see you dive into cause it's far more exemplary of Trent's style compared to The Hand That Feeds that you first broke down. There's so much NIN to go through and this is a great follow up.
Would love to see him react to Ruiner.
@@troytalbot5746 Truth! Geebz channel has years of content ahead of it, I can hardly wait!
Yeah, Ruiner is a great suggestion, second that. Other ones I'd recommend: Something I Can Never Have from Pretty Hate Machine and The Great Destroyer from Year Zero, I think those will help illustrate the stunning breadth of Trent's output.
Broken is my favorite album. Have it on vinyl.
@@kmulcahyable same!
Oh man, Somewhat Damaged by NIN is amazing. Love to see you tackle that monster.
I second this choice. One of my favorite NIN song.
Oh god yes.
That would definitely be a solid choice. Very unusual song.
Honestly anything off of The Fragile is a great choice. But I think tackling an instrumental track like Just Like You Imagined would be super interesting.
Yes!! I suggested it in his last NIN video. Hopefully he sees this thread and does it!
“Just Like You Imagined” by Nine Inch Nails. Amazing song with layers for days.
I agreeing all who pick this song.
Yes, this one please!
Or as it was more popularly referred to as.
That song from the 300 trailer...
One of my fav songs of all time, if not THE favourite
Yes, this is one I’ve asked for before because it’s such a great track. The live version from and all that could’ve been is also great.
YES I love this video and your commentary so much! You are a joy to watch, subscribed. I think Trent would approve of your series name too - he's quite fond of decomposition and decay 🐜
I would absolutely love if you did a reaction to "Just Like You Imagined" off "The Fragile" album of NIN. Trent is probably one of the best composers/producers/engineers on the "rock" scene. Love your reactions.
Totally agree with this recommendation.
The rehearsal version might be just the purest sample of the great layering Trent is famous for.
I recommend this too. That track is magical.
Ruiner is such an amazing and underrated song. The downward spiral is the album that showed me how powerful music is.
After the birth of my first child, I sat staring at her mother as she lay sleeping while this song bounced around inside my head for at least 30 minutes. Needless to say, this is a special song to me.
When you talk about Reznor as a composer for movies, Seven and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo always come to mind. Reznor + Fincher = magic!
Reznor's scores for Fincher are great but Howard Shore scored Se7en. However, Closer (Precursor) was used in the opening credits so I totally get why you thought he scored the movie, too.
Social Network...
His work for Gone Girl is still my favorite to this day.
More NIN Please!
I would recommend "Right Where it Belongs"
NIN and Tool. Some of the best musical craftsmen of our times.
Fyi if you ask any NIN or tool fans if there are any more tool or NIN songs to check out the answer is going to always be yes all of them.💯
You’ve chosen some of the most straight forward NIN songs.
If you’re looking for good tracking...
The Wretched, La Mer, Great Below, The Like Begins to Blur, Ruiner.
Or Reptile, Big Come Down, The Becoming version on Still, anything off of Broken, etc. There's so many good ones that people miss!
La Mer would be a good instrumental but it's fairly straightforward
Omg anything from Still. All of Still. Trent's reworking his own music is awesome but this guy needs to hear originals first
Great suggestions here 👌
@@TheSeidnernin And All That Could Have Been... my favorite most depressing personal anthem for years lol.
Trent Reznor is a modern musical genius. I don't think I am even exaggerating.
Absolutely agree 💯
Dude, if you have never heard The Perfect Drug by NIN you are missing out on an amazing piece of composition!
My favorite NIN song is The Perfect Drug. I feel like that one is criminally underrated, highly recommend!
The drum&rythmic stuff on track is insane!
The Lost Highway soundtrack is its own triumph
Yeah that's a great one
Omg I so love that you're doing this one. This was the song listened to on repeat when my wife and I got the latitude and longitude of the bench we sat on during our first date tattooed on our forearms in the same spot. Super meaningful and awesome!
Which is both awesome and ironic considering Trent’s statements about the song.
When I first came to the states in '94 I was hit with a huge culture shift in music. I really took to Korn and NIN. I would suggest one of my favorites "Reptile". Very interesting song sonically.
Also keep up the great reactions. I look forward to these every day!
My fellow old dude
As a long time NIN fan
Great choice and you nailed describing the depth of production and intention to the listening experience
First reactor I’ve seen “get it “
👍
I read an interview with Reznor about producing this song and--fun fact--they actually did have to turn down the drums during the chorus. They were clashing with everything else and it made the song feel like it was slowing down.
Oh wow, I didn’t see your comment but literally said I thought it was on purpose because it didn’t fit with the forward momentum of the hook/chorus.
Usually don't request things, but it'd be cool to see you respond to NIN - The Becoming. King Crimsons Adrian Belew plays a ring modulator solo
Perfect track for him to break down. My favorite NIN song
This is such a layered song and can't suggest it highly enough for a decomposition listen! Also, the atmosphere is so deep and anxious inducing that I love it
It is the most mechanical identifier
Any of the main instrumentals from The Fragile (same album as We're In This Together) would be good choices for NIN. Specifically, "The Mark Has Been Made", "Pilgrimage", and the ultimate Nine Inch Nails instrumental, "Just Like You Imagined". These would be good choices for this channel since you don't focus on lyrics and also because they all feel cinematic and functioned as early indicators of his future as a film composer.
Oh I vote "just like you imagined"
Have seen trent four times and it's amazing live as well
Just Like You Imagined is definitely one of his best instrumental work! A Warm Place is a close second to listen to but you almost need the chaos of the rest of the album to really feel it
do: just like you imagined. mike garson plays piano on it.
Would be cool to see you react to more Nine Inch Nails. Maybe "The Becoming" woluld be an interesting choice. It was named the scariest song of all time by the Music Genome Project.
Not "The Downward Spiral?" I doubt anyone listens to that because its fun. I fully enjoy listening to the becoming, and find nothing scary about it.
seconding The Becoming
Top 3 NIN song for me being The Wretched and Something I Can Never Have
Ur mom was named scariest of all time by the genome project
The acoustic power cords in the breakdowns to this day overwhelm my emotions.
I have a recommendation for the channel . . .
From here on, there MUST be a NIN song at least once a month 😁
The little musical motif at the end of the song is all over that album, and all of Trents music, it's like his signature 😌 🙏
You've got to check out "La Mer", which is maybe one of his most interesting compositional creations. Also, "Just Like You Imagined" is really layered and beautiful.
Such a great song. That album is so intricately produced, it's amazing. He even brought in Dr. Dre to work on Even Deeper. Just bring in one of the biggest names in hiphop, just to work on the drum and bass sound in *one* song out of 20-ish songs on the album.
I didn't know that. This is an amazing factoid! Like... think about the producing talent in that studio... jeez. The conversations shared... thanks for that!
@@derricktipps9867 Two of the most iconic producers of all time, yeah I wish I were a fly on the wall.
As others have said, the whole of Fragile, plus Eraser and Reptile from The Downward Spiral (Hell, the whole of that album is amazing too!)
NIN helped shaped me as a musician. Reznor is a GOD.
This whole album, The Fragile, is NIN's peak. Just pure gold front to back. Easily one of the greatest of the 90s.
I love The Fragile, don't get me wrong, but I can't say it tops The Downward Spiral.
Downward Spiral is NIN's peak. Without question. Best album of the 90's.
Agreed. I enjoy the Fragile over DS all day.
The Fragile over downward but they are two very different albums
The "I can't unhear it now" moments you were talking about at 14:00 are precisely why I watch your channel. You definitely point out a great many things in my favorite songs I never would have picked up on by myself, but now that I know it is there, I can appreciate its existence.
Right Where It Belongs - Nine Inch Nails is an amazing masterpiece, have a listen to it!
Love this song. Now that you're hitting industrial, I'm going to request a band I loved back in high school in the early 90s, and since then introduced my wife to, which in turn brought them back into my listening rotation: Stabbing Westward. I guess that's the difference of me growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, and her in Texas "Save Yourself" and "Shame" are both favorites.
Oh man, there are so many good songs from Darkest Days I'd love to see 😌 🙏 I love that album
I LOVE them! I remember when Wither Blister Burn + Peel came out and I had that on repeat for weeeeeeeks
What suburb? I'm from Crystal Lake. Been down south for awhile now though.
Grew up in Dallas and loved them, too. Not sure it's a regional thing lol
Yes!!! SW’s music got me through some really dark shit. “Shame,” “Lies,” “Falls Apart,” “The Thing I Hate”...wow. I finally caught them live in 2019 and they were amazing.
That ending was not the actual ending of the song. As a paggage, it was shortened by about half.
The passage I'm referring to is the piano part at the end where Trent takes the listener into his signature melody which can be found in various songs throughout his catalog (the song 'Closer' being the most obvious example). Not sure why but I'm fairly certain you listened to a version that was edited down for time. I hope for the sake of your unique perspective you listen to the full version of that last little bit some time. 🙂
The piano melody at the end of this can be found in Closer? Really? I know the melody at the end of Closer is in Heresy and The Downward Spiral (the song), but I don’t hear it here at all. Only cases where I’ve noticed this were in The Frail, which shows up again as the solo in The Fragile (the song), and the bass in La Mer is used in Into the Void.
I think the melody you're referencing is the 3 note motif which also shows up in La Mer and Into The Void, the Closer melody appears on other songs on The Downward Spiral, but not The Fragile.
i love the drum beat on this track. trent loves his tambourine ( on the chorus ) the piano outro is a bit of a similar repeating motif in the fragile album.
I'd recommend "Where Is Everybody?" by NIN as well, from the same album. The layering is RIDICULOUS, once you really dig in. It took 8 years to feel like I'm anywhere near finishing picking the intricacies apart.
La Mer from this same album is a beautiful, more ambient, musically complex track. Check it out! Showcases his compositional skills!!
You should do one on "Just like you imagined" off the fragile. Love the arrangements in that song.
PLEASE do "Into The Void"
There's a tonne of gold in NIN albums.
But this one specifically we'd like to see a composer react to.
thanks
YOU LISTENED!!!! 😎
I'm the guy on the last NIN reaction that told you that you HAD to listen to this one!
Thanks, man!!!
My favourite A Perfect Circle song was co-written with Trent and you can really feel his stamp on it. Passive. You should check it out.
Love his contribution to “potions” by puscifer.
If I'm not mistaken the drums in the early NIN stuff are sampled from industrial albums Trent liked, so like Ministry and so on. They were placeholders as he was writing and beginning to build the songs which were meant to be replaced later once he got into the studio. But as the legend goes he just couldn't find anything that hit like a bunch of drum samples he recorded in lo-fi from worn out tapes, so they just mastered them and left them in.
Trent Reznor: The Greatest One-Man Band Ever
That "ringing" snare was recorded in a room with a load of guitars on the walls...and they fucked about with open tunning them...and enjoyed the ring from the strings
This is my #1 NIN song. Fragile is such a masterpiece.
Same here.
Same.. theres so many better songs than closer/hurt that the mainstream knows.. head down, the line begins to blur, me I'm not... this is my favorite though
This is an " our song" kinda song. Until she leaves.
It's the one that hooked me to NIN.
You should listen to "the* perfect drug" by NIN
I had that remix CD. So many different takes of the same tune!
IMO that's a near perfect song.
The drum solo on the full version is epic.
Not even a good song tbh by far his most overrated, or let's say his only overrated song
@@dream_in_digital Not basic at all. This song indeed doesn't have great percussion, but the composition is fantastic besides that, plus it's incredibly passionate. I do consider it one of his best. Not basic at all. But The Perfect Drug just isn't the way to go honestly, I'd go with Copy of A, it's super mindbending and unique
My boyfriend (at the time) and I went to the record store at our local mall the day this album dropped, and immediately bought the $40 double CD. He was 19 and I was 17. We went back to his (parent's) house, got stoned out in the woods (close by), went inside, directly up stairs -- to his room -- and threw side one of The Fragile on his crappy CD player -- Somewhat Damaged began and our clothes were off in seconds.
He creates sonic landscapes. Me and a friend of mine play this song. Two guitars in two different tunings. One in E and one in Drop D. It sounds huge. I enjoyed this. Thanks for doing it.
Dillinger Escape Plan ft. Mike Patton - When Good Dogs Do Bad Things, that is all I wish for!
Starting a new job today- can't wait to be in a position where I can donate to help your work with kids. A positive music teacher like you would have really changed my young life in Alabama.
I have an electronic drum kit, and I absolutely programmed this snare sound in manually, then played the shot out of this song. So fun!!
I read an interview with Trent where he said he wanted a "Wall of Distortion", as opposed to Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound".
And THIS is the track he GETS THAT SHIT on!!!
The Fragile is my favourite album of all time
You should do NIN “And All That Could Have Been” or “Right Where It Belongs”, both amazing under-appreciated songs
Right where it belongs is such an emotional piece
“And All That Could Have Been” wrecks me each and every time I listen to it. I can only listen to it when I am in a positive mind space; otherwise, it just hits so so hard. It is a masterpiece.
Both heart-wrenchingly beautiful.
More NIN! Please😊 Tool & NIN has always been my top two bands.
you should do La mer/The Great Below (2 tracks on the Fragile but go together). You would enjoy them i think
On the Fragility tour sometime in '98 or '99, part of the show was incredibly expensive moving LED panels/screens that started out behind the stage & actually moved. They moved forward to in front of the band, & for some reason I remember all the other lights dimming as the film presentation proceeded but my memory also indicates it was incredibly bright still.
Maybe it was just that the panels were super bright & crisp. I don't remember exactly at what point the panels were first supposed to start moving but I do remember they played "La Mer" followed by "The Great Below" as they appear on the LP, & the video was high res oceanography. When "La Mer" peaked in clashing noise swells & melodic figures the waves were absolutely overwhelming, the entire front 10 rows of the audience was just blue in the face & our mouths were gaping open in...
Expectation? Astonishment? Fear? Probably a good mix of all three for some of us.
I was high as fuck so I don't remember exactly 🤣 great moment in Nine Inch Nails history for me, though.
Songs I'd recommend from Nine Inch Nails as a spread across their catalogue: Terrible Lie, the Becoming, La Mer, All the Love in the World
Terrible Lie is criminally underrated
La Mer, The Great Below, and The Way Out is Through back to back are amazing as a trio of songs to me.
'With Teeth' - Great use of tonal changes, emotive.
'Only' - Synth rocks, layering is amazing, lyrics kick ass.
'Right Where It Belongs' - I believe this song is Trent Reznor's 'Imagine' [The Beatles]. It has a depth that is meant to evoke. Truly, if only for your own comparison, listen to this one.
I remember impatiently waiting for The Fragile to be released and when the first single dropped I was hoping it would be a hard hitter and it wasn't except for the B side which was Star Fuckers Inc which I loved, but when The album dropped and I heard this song, my daughter was 7 and was with me and she turned this song up , she is 29 now and when we go anywhere and I'm driving she puts this song on.. It was and IS that powerful of a track STILL.. This song was the genius of Trent with layering sounds, hooks and melodies.
You could dedicate an entire channel to reviewing Trent Reznor's extensive library.
Dude, for more NIN, would love to hear you do "Just Like You Imagined". Also, "The Great Destroyer" has some stuff in it that would be great to get your take on...
He should do a back-to-back of the remix followed by the original - night and day, and both amazing
Trust me! As a composer, with your headset, you need to listen to Into the Void from this same album! I guarantee you'll appreciate Trent as a songwriter with that song. There are just so many things I know will stand out to you with your experience and you'll really enjoy it.
Thank you for this. I remember reading years ago Trent Reznor talking about working on this song. He said that one thing that took a long time to figure out was that when the chorus hit, the whole thing seemed to slow down even though the tempo was the same. The fix they finally came up with was to lower the volume on the drums during the chorus. I would imagine that it gives the 16th notes on the guitar a chance to really make it feel high energy.
Would love to hear you decompose "all the love in the world" by NIN... great layerd track
Agree. Not my favorite album, but this song is definitely my favorite from it
Hell yes. NIN is just an incredible experience and with songs that are so layered, they're perfect for this kind of breakdown.
I'm once again recommending Wilderun and Thy Catafalque (the letter just released a new song and has an album coming out in a couple months, and it's incredible).
Everytime you listen to NIN, I'll give my like. One of my all time favourite acts. It just... gets to me. Haunts me. Try "Right Where It Belongs", either the album version or the acoustic one. Or "Just Like You Imagined" for the best instrumental ever.
Every single song on this album fantastic. It's definitely my favorite NIN album.
Jus As You Imagined (studio or live) should be a fun trip for you. Copy Of A as well.
Duuuuude, I'd love to see you react to either Dogs and/or Pigs from Pink Floyd's album Animals! (Even if you've already heard them before, I still think it'd be cool to hear what you have to say about them 🤙)
Beside You in Time from NIN is a production marvel. This song can get to you in so many levels, please give it a try!
Yay! So glad to see this. I've always had a huge Trent Reznor poster above the head of my bed, since I was like 17. And I have a NIN symbol tattoed on the back of my neck that I got when I was in Flordia circa 2006. During my first "long term" relationship in high school (1.5 yrs), this was OUR song. I still cherish those days.
Thanks again for all you do!
Kathleen
This more like an anthem for me, still listen to this regularly.
👊
Between the buried and me- Extremophile elite is a another great tune to check out. Great musicianship the band has
My favorite from that album!
Thank you SO MUCh for doing this song. It's one of my favorites, though I say that about most NIN songs. No one seems to react to them much, and Trent is a genius. I know they aren't for everyone, but DAMN!
So when this came out there was an interview with Trent in some mag (maybe even Guitar World) where he talked about dropping the drums out in the chorus a bit in general because for some reason it sounded like the tempo had increased during the chorus, even though it hadn't. He said it was one of those things they couldn't solve because they "knew" it wasn't speeding up, and they just went through a bunch of "well what if we..." until they hit on "oh, turn the drums down a bit". Very cool to read that even a master of the art of electronic music still relies on trial and error from time to time.
U gotta check out “the becoming” “reptile” and anything on downward Spiral of NIN!
And “Heresy”!!
'The Perfect Drug' is a pretty cool one, or I'd suggest 'Reptile' or 'Eraser' for some interesting listens. Great video as always!
The snare ring is tuned to a flat 5th which is why Is sounds so so jilted. Masterful.
What's up brother?
Glad to see you doing Nine inch Nails again.
You should definitely do a reaction to The Fragile album, both sides. We're in this together now is on side A.
My favorite album of all time, masterpiece.
Also, The Social Network Soundtrack, also by Trent Reznor.
Much Love
Great track! "The prefect drug" should be on your list!
I'm still waiting to Gojira - Flying Whales and Heaviest Matter of The Universe
Great choices. I’ve been really into “Vacuity” lately, too, off of The Way of All Flesh.
Wait. He’s doing literally everything. He’ll get to it.
@@marchmont5918 yama’s messenger has been my jam lately. Those drums are too fucking cool on that track
I read somewhere that they spent ages on getting the snare just right :) the drums were indeed pushed back in the mix, because they made everything seem slower.
Plus there are a TON of guitars in the chorus. They kept changing to a bigger mixer :)
You should definitely listen to more of Trent's other works. Also this whole album and downward spiral! Brilliant!
Trent Reznor is like Mike Pattoon, everything they touch... turns into gold
90’s had the most diverse music of any decade before and since...Trent from NIN and Maynard from TOOL are super talented frontmen. You should listen to some VAST as well which is a similar style...you may have heard Touched through soundtrack on some TV show Angel.
If you just want to be blown away by literally everything you mentioned in the engineering process and the layering...listen to The Fragile on vinyl. I will send it to you if need be. Grammy well deserved for such cool stuff back then. Thank you, Geebz, as always! 💚
It's perfectly ironic that you'd watch THIS video, this song, this artist; back in June of 2001, my grandparents took me to Oahu for a month-long vacation. Within the first week, I attended a Barnes & Noble and purchased The Fragile to be played on my walkman, w/ earbuds - yes, both discs. It was laborious but TOTALLY worth it. Do I regret not listening to my surroundings more? Maybe. I remember the fluid textures and soundscapes presenting a very vivid contrast alongside all the paradise and sunshine, the shimmering sandy beaches and bountiful tropical buffets. It was like I was listening to the TRUE soundtrack of my immediate surroundings at the time and it was freaking incredible, like someone gave me a failsafe record to be played all over. This song in particular played while hiking up and down Diamondhead's summit is nothing short of true perfection. Long live Trent Reznor / Nine Inch fuckin' Nails!!
There's an extended version where that outtro is drawn out further, and really poignant and sombre
I mean really, that's the normal album version and the one he reacted to was an edited shortened version.
"AirBuds" :O Now I see why apple didn't call them Airbuds!
arf arf
Your depth of knowledge of production is such a gift for those of us music nerds that are not musicians.
Can't unhear the things you have gifted to me. I hear 209% differently even after playing music for years badly and loving it forever.
The perfect pop song from the nineties.
