My problem with snafu rig is the hook is at the lowest end of line. and rod is not sensitive to the position of the hook because weight is at higher position than hook. When retrieving line from beach or trolling on boats, the hook is easily stuck at bottom. After losing several rigs, I never used it again. Another excellent bait for porgy is shrimp, which is widely available at grocery store. I usually tie half shrimp tail with elastic rubber thread before putting it on hook.
hey david, glad to see youre doing well, and still fishing obviously. hope your fishing season is going as good as mine, we caught two bluefin this year! i know its a little too early but i definitely wanted to ask if you could make a few more trout videos when the season finally arrives. I am interested in getting into trout fishing.. but dont know of any spots in the state and how to get started going about it. take care, best wishes
Dave, thanks much for this useful instructional video. Very few bloggers delve into the details of how to fish for porgy and their videos are 5-minute long. Two questions, if you don’t mind: 1) If one is fishing from shore/beach (in my case - Long Island Sound, NY), what type of sinker would you recommend - pyramid or bank? 2) Have you ever fished for porgy with artificial bait such as Fishbites and Fishbites EZ Strips?
I'd just stick with pyramids if using pretied rigs for ease of use and they are less likely to roll. I have used fish bites for whiting down in Florida so I know they work, but I never used it for scup. Scup are not picky eaters so I imagine they will try and eat it no problem.
I admire your experience and knowledge when it comes to fishing, and thank you for sharing it with us. One Question: How much emphasis do you place on daily Tide Phases or on Monthly Moon Phases in determining when to fish?
Depends where you are fishing. Off a dock or a pier… tide is going to matter because high tide might be the only time you can fish there. Out in a boat.. less
Appreciate the video but your definition of "light gear" is way different from mine. I don't even use a rod that heavy for fluke fishing. For porgy, I use a ML with a 2000 size real and 8-12# line. Tight lines!
So yes you can go way lighter, but a lot of people I see fishing use broom sticks for scup, so in comparison, the tackle I'm describing is the lightest and most practical and easy to obtain to suit most newer/novice fisherman's needs without being to light where they couldn't reel in a common accidental by-catch like a nice striper or large tautog that I think a little 2000 reel and lighter line could not handle especially in a snaggy environment on top of a newer/novice fisherman fighting the fish with little fish fighting skill.

i know that spot, i was on the other side it was so good for may-june but i might head back over there now cuz the other side is kinda slow lately
Just fished that dock yesterday. I like to drop straight down the side of the pilings. If you’re not catching them, they aren’t there.
It was good in the early morning hours but dead by 10am.

I used to catch Scup in RI. Scup don’t usually come up to the North Shore where I now live. How far south of Boston do you need to go to catch Scup?
I've caught them in Hull mass the past couple years but nothing consistent
@battagliamp1 have you tried Gloucester ma? It's near Boston and has alot of fish!
Never caught scup in Gloucester. State pier is good for mackerel and squid depending on the season.

You can lift a 15inch scup 5-10ft with 6lb test with an ultralight set up? Are you using a net? Leader? I'd love to see that! Mono or braid?
