Panasonic Lumix S5iiX After Twelve Months - Am I Sticking With Lumix?

  • So I've owned my Panasonic Lumix S5iiX since it was released almost a year ago. It has been my primary camera and I've shot dozens of jobs for both video and photos. Stick with me and I'll tell you what I like and don't like about it and if I'm staying in the Lumix ecosystem.
    Ok, so here's the good.
    1. Autofocus
    2. Colors/Vlog
    3. Low light performance
    4. 6k open gate
    5. Mode dials/customizing
    6. Waveform and exposure tools
    7. All the codecs!
    8. (Bonus I didn't really touch on) Redundant recording in SD cards or USB-C and HDMI
    Here are some things I don't like so much.
    1. No PDAF in S&Q
    2. Battery life/power options
    3. Usb port is limited/no bluetooth for DJI
    4. No OLPF and moire
    5. No internal 4k Prores
    With all that said I think this is the absolute best budget minded full frame hybrid camera you can get your hands on.

    The Panasonic Lumix S5IIX was released in June 2023 - time flies faster than actual time :)

      Dang! I thought I got mine one May 1st. I guess it's more like an 11 month review! I take it all back then.

    @maranavisuals What camera do you think Panasonic is coming out with next to improve upon the s5iix? I just purchased it and your video is helpful with understanding some limitations I was not aware of.

      I'm not really sure. It may be an S1h mark ii but no idea when that might come out. I really think the S5iiX is the best value you can get at this price range. There are compromises at every price point.

    can i make a short action movie with this, will it give rolling shutter problem

      What are the stakes? If you’re a solo filmmaker then yeah, you’ll be fine. You might get some rolling shutter artifacts. As long as you aren’t doing whip pans all the time it should be ok. In a year or use I’ve never had to scrap footage because of it.
      If you can’t have rolling shutter you’ll have to pony up the cash for a global shutter camera at 3-5x the price.

    maan u should make a video to compare s5iix vs bmcc6k ff

      I could do that for sure. They’re just totally different cameras for different purposes but I might just do that!

    For gimbal shooting I use a dummy battery to USB connector to an Anker powerbank (9V 3A). Power supply goes in my pocket, the only weight on the gimbal is the small adapter.

      Nice! That sounds perfect. I've been looking at this solution as well.

      That’s what I was thinking there are so many adaptors. I mean people want every thing perfect for a $2000 6k pro res raw camera that also shoots 96mp photos lol

    I was close to pulling the trigger on this camera, but the loss of auto focus is a dealbreaker, particularly when you’re sat in that ideal straightforward setting. A great video and I appreciate that you showed the good and the bad.

    • @PagosaCreative
      @PagosaCreative  6 місяців тому

      What did you wind up going with? To be clear, you still have auto focus, it just isn’t phase detect. I’m really hoping for a new more premium flagship to come out and then this can be the B-cam.

      @@PagosaCreative I was looking for a more flexible travel camera, mainly for Video but some stills and decided that whilst I love so many of the features, stabilisation being just one one, if it’s phasing in and out in those conditions then it does not really matter about the other features if it’s out of focus.

      @@Coatsey007 honestly this was my fault. I had it selected for AFC autofocus so it kept looking for a new target. I almost always have it on AFS and it is always locked on. Sometimes you just don’t want to reshoot a third time.

      As far as auto focus it’s brilliant it’s a newer camera and most people haven’t a clue how to maximize the auto focus. I mean they just released a new update and people are not going to master the auto focus so soon. Trust me it’s user error

    Do you think the PDAF and crop issue at 4k 60p can be fixed through firmware updates?

    • @PagosaCreative
      @PagosaCreative  3 місяці тому +1

      No, it’s a limitation of the sensor unfortunately.

    since you know the camera so well now maybe you are able to answer this: How can i set the camera that it DOES NOT LOCK THE EXPOSURE AUTOMATICALLY ( AEL LOCK ) when half pressing the shutter button ????

    • @KendallLartigue
      @KendallLartigue 6 місяців тому +1

      If you are in AF-C, the exposure will not lock when half-pressing the shutter button. In AF-S, the exposure does lock on half-press. I could not find an option on my S5 II to change that behavior.

      @@KendallLartigue from all the people I posted this question too you are the only one who actually knew. I use AF-C + AEL button > Custom > AF lock ... but Nikon and Sony cameras are doing it via settings in AF-S mode without the need to push additional buttons.
