A Chat With Outdoor Vitals - Tayson Whittaker Founder Talks Gear and Business (Great talk!)
Today we are bringing you something a little different! I had the opportunity to interview Tayson Whittaker, founder and CEO at Outdoor Vitals. Outdoor Vitals has been growing steadily since their founding a decade ago. What started with one product has blossomed into a whole different beast entirely. I love their approach of high performance gear at an approachable price point, largely in part due to their direct to consumer positioning.
I've got a handful of Outdoor Vitals gear and have worked closely with them thanks to my relationship with Backpackers.com, I'm our Brand Partnerships Coordinator. I hope you enjoy this conversation I had with Tayson. If you have questions please drop them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them. If you found this helpful please drop a like and subscribe!

    I have used the 6k pro a lot of times and am not sure if the boxed style is an improvement. The display on the side seems weird. And then you dont have the iris wheel from the 6k pro. A lot of my issues would be solved if they had a monitor that could control the bm os (which is amazing)

    • @MaranaVisuals
      @MaranaVisuals 3 місяці тому

      While i hear your complaints and understand let me just give you some counterpoints. If they put a display of the same size on the top you couldn’t rig anything there, certainly not a large top handle. They’d have to shrink the screen and you’d need a monitor anyway. Very similar to how nearly every single other box camera operates. There is an iris/control wheel on the side. Personally I’m planning to get one and also grab a video assist as well as the EVF for shoulder rigging.

    Thanks, intersting comparion! I own the Uultraspire Zygos 5.0 and previously used the Zygos 4.0: I really love the Zygos - and a few more Ultraspire products. I do agree though that for winter conditions when you need extra layers, the Zygos tends to get a bit too full very quickly, especially since I like to use it with an hydration reservoir. A bigger version of the Zygos would be awesome for when you need to carry more gear!

      Agreed! I had their Epic a while ago but that was too large for what I needed and at the time it wasn’t offered with different torso sizes and that really can make all the difference.

      @@MaranaVisuals I also have their Epic XT 2.0. I really like some of the features and recently used it for a multiday ultra race: great pack but I agree with you - it's often too big unless you need to carry a lot of gear. The one-size-fit-most was also my main gripe about it. I heard they might release a new pack of around 20 liters (roughly 1200 c.i.) sometime this year. They mention it in this video at minute 21: ua-cam.com/video/fIZL5sLI2vI/v-deo.html Their Epic XT 3.0 is now offered in two sizes so the new pack might also be available in different sizes.

    Thanks for sharing, the Green is on our bucket list. A friendly suggestion is to change the orientation of your bent shaft paddle 180 degrees. From the video it looked like you were holdingthe paddle backwards. Shifting the paddle so the bend is forward will make for a much more efficient paddle stroke and cut down on fatigue over a long day of paddling. Keep posting your videos🛶

      The tent has been amazing and yeah I've still got it. I've been very happy with it. I had a weird zipper issue it was able to resolve it without needing any warranty service. I would highly recommend it for 4 season winter camping. You won't be sorry.

    Could you fit a jacket instead of the tripod holder? Or a jacket in the water bottle mesh pocket ? I'm a road cyclist, and looking for a solution for winter cycling, when I hit the climbs and want to take off my jacket. Also what about just going for a hike, would this still sit on the hips securely ?

    • @MaranaVisuals
      @MaranaVisuals 8 місяців тому

      You could fit a very small jacket into the water bottle holder. Nothing that would be winter weight. I also wouldn't use the attachment straps to secure a jacket. You'd want to also carabiner the jacket onto one of the straps so it couldn't fall out. This is oddly a very photography centric design that I can't picture working well for other uses. The design really is intended to sit on your back while in the biking position. I have walked around with it a bit while off the bike but I wouldn't hike with it.

      @@MaranaVisuals thanks! Cycling jackets are usually designed to be packable and small as they are very form fitting. I think that might be a deal breaker for me, if I can't make it dual purpose for hiking. Your comment did help me make a decision, I ended up getting the camel back Mule 5.
