George Frideric Handel
Dixit Dominus, HWV 232
Monteverdi Choir
English Baroque Soloists
Sir John Eliot Gardiner
June 2014
The more I listen to this performance, the more I admire it. It is absolutely stunning.
I fully agree
this is a masterpiece of humankind, please keep Dixit Dominus alive for the next 2923901 generations.
🥰😍
❤️💜💙🌺🌷🎉
It's not only the beauty of the music and the enthutiastic rendering by Maestro Gardiner and his Monteverdi choir, but unlike too many groups these days, they are a pleasure to look at, clean, refined, poised, as in: "civilized'. What a joy to the eye and ear!
Gardiner and the Monteverdi and Baroque soloists! Just stunning. To think Handel was only 22 when he wrote this. It,s amazing to sing it. A new revelation in every section. Such attack, accuracy and vigour here. Thank you all.
I have loved Handel’s Dixit Dominus since first hearing it in Winchester Cathedral in 1986, and have heard many different performances of it since then, but not ever anything like this! The intensity, sheer beauty and perfection are almost beyond belief. Sir John Eliot Gardiner, orchestra, soloists, choir - one cannot begin to imagine the work that must have gone into making this come to life in such a perfect and beautiful form. Thank you with all my heart.
yes
I agree a very mystical work.Made me feel like weeping it is so beautiful . Thanks
Oudtshoornify, your words in review capture the essence of this unique performance. I could not agree with you more! Thanks for articulating what others beyond ourselves must feel though the experience.

You obviously never herd the performance of Lithuanian chamber orchestra under the condact of Saulius Sondetckis, haven't you?
No, I have not heard that performance. You can not not appreciate any performance which is conducted by JEG's baton. His performances are consistently of the highest standard, and that is what he expects of each singer and instrumentalist. The whole experience is one of delight to the spirit.
This work is Amazing. I can't imagine myself at 21 composing such a masterpiece. Handel was a genius from a young age. Very admirable, since his family was upper class and they did not want him to be a musician, but a lawyer... but he was born to be a musician, he traveled through Europe studying different musical styles, many times he helped the poor through his concerts and died with honors. Now we can all enjoy these wonderful works. Thanks Handel 🙌🏻
Beautiful
Can you believe this piece? It has me shocked every time. It is the most metal thing I have ever heard.
He composed Dixit Dominus in Venice.
What crap is this? "Metal" is your best expression to describe this marvelous composition?
@@leopoldomontoya8754 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music
I think this work is the hardest to sing ever...so much counterpoint, fugal choruses and high notes. I read that Handel was 22 when he composed it 😱.. a really young Genius!!!
At that age, he just did not know what was impossible to achieve :-)
You are correct. I am performing it tonight, and it is the only piece I had to actually practice outside the weekly rehearsals!
it is like a medicine so heals your soul
No, it's more a warning!
Great.
This isn't " like" medicine.
This is, in did medicine for body mind and soul !
I love how dramatic, harmonically complex, contrapuntal and exuberant this work is. Händel brought choral music to the top in 1706 as a young man of 21 years old. In my opinion, no one could have done it better than him.
What about Vivaldi? Magnificat or Gloria or Domine ad adiuvandum me..
@@lorebern6538 Vivaldi’s music was wonderful, always full of life, however he was not overall as fine as Handel. “G.F. Handel, the master of us all”. W.A. Mozart.
@@lorebern6538 The great thing about Handel is his musical genius He used the musical forms from the rest of Europe to make a voice that was all his own , vocal and instrumental which had never been heard before This performance is a wonderful example of how his music transcended all others except Bach.
Ridiculous to compare Vivaldi and Handel. Both of them are perfect in their own way, but it is like comparing apples and oranges. Completely different.
Some of us happen to like one more than the other.
Handel, the consumate composer.
Barbra Streisand, in the day, the consumate actress and vocalist.
Glorious praise for the One who gives Everlasting Life to all who simply believe in Him for it (John 3:16) .
Praise is indeed fitting .
Could Heaven be any better than this?! No wonder Beethoven said that Handel was the father of us all! This must be right at the acme of Western Civilization. No other civ has come close to this, and the West itself seems now spent. What a marvelous, fabulous performance of this amazing opus! Mr. Gardiner seemed to have such an encouraging and collegial attitude. One that says 'we are all in this together,' rather than acting as if he wrote the music and is the master and is prying it out of the singers and musicians. This is such a treasure. Altissime grazie to all the performers in this momentous accomplishment.
I prefer French baroque, but I agree about what you said!
merci

Beautiful. I am always a fan of Baroque. But some compositions speak louder than others, and this is one of them.
Music is as essential as food and water. This type of music with musicians like these.
Blessings.
Hervorragende Interpretation des Werkes. Absolument d'accord !

I loved this piece from the first time I heard it as a young man, and insisted on conducting it with the Keele Bach Choir. This interpretation captures brilliantly the youthful exuberance and vitality of Handel's writing> Gardner brings much innovation to a performance which is both virtuosic and utterly committed. We are lucky indeed to have this performance for posterity.

Yes I think it is indeed youthful exuberance! Like Handel is saying, "look what I can do!" When I first heard this work (and luckily it was this performance), I was stunned at its intensity, drama, and emotional range- it is a perfect example of the Baroque style at its most spectacular. I can never understand those who think Baroque music is just mathematical and mechanical. It must be thrilling (and hair-raising) to conduct, you are so fortunate!

Handel is my favorite composer! For my music degree: I wrote my thesis on Handel's organ concertos.
@@ericvanjames8395 Congratulations. You made a very wonderful choice. What is amazing in Handel, in my opinion, is the fact that he didn’t came from a music family, like Mozart or Beethoven. Mr. Handel is surely beaming with joy from his Heavenly realm at this superb rendering of his music.
Very simple music compare to the complex works by Bach.
He went to Italy at age 22 to show the Italians that he can compose in their style with this one. I don't think there was any doubt afterwards about his abilities thereafter.

I don't think it is right to say that händel is a second hand product. Yes, he used the Italian style and not the German, but he did it brilliantly (I don't refer ro some copies from other's), and he also used some German themes in some of his works.
@@leodepuydt308 Maybe your description is a little rough and impolite to Haendel, but indeed Italy still was the cultural capital of the world at the time and their truths the most recognized.
