When I was 12, My Mom took me to my 1st Carnegie Hall concert during its 75th Anniversary celebrations. Rubinstein was on the program and my Mom took me backstage to meet him post concert. That's when I learned that my maternal Grandfather knew him. He and my Mom had a chat and Mom have me an unforgettable memory.

A local orchestra (which included a lady who later became one of my profs) prepared all week for the Maestro to arrive for the run through before the evening's concert. They begin the intro. He waves for them to stop. "What is that you're playing?" Such and such concerto was the reply. "That is not what I prepared!" Stunned silence. He closes his eyes, flutters his fingers over the keyboard a minute or two. Looking up at the conductor says "all right, go ahead".

Perhaps at age 12, as a piano student, my parents took me to a Rubenstein concert in Washington, D.C.
What an experience! (I'm 73 now)...not just the wonderful music, but also the vivid charm of his manners, dress, movements on stage, graciousness towards the audience and pure dignity.

Chopin moves me and fills my senses like no other. This concerto is my absolute favourite piece of his. The emotions race and tumble downstream, then gently flow into a calm lake softly lapping at the water’s edge. Clouds float by, birds sing in the trees, love is in the air, I feel peace and contentment. He breaks my heart and then I am in love again. Love never dies in his music, he always gives us hope and a sense of purpose. Do you feel it too?

You are quite right. I quote from Joan Chissell's book on Schumann. (Page 198) as follows:
'His enthusiasm for Chopin dates from his first article of 1831, containing the now famous sentence: 'Off with your hats, gentlemen--a genius,' and in all his subsequent writings he acknowledges Chopin as a true representative of the 'new poetic age'. ALSO:
in Judith Chernak's book on Schumann, the Faces and the Masks (page 258) she writes: ''New Paths'' could be seen as a companion piece to Schumann's early review of Chopin's "Mozart" Variations, in which he hailed Chopin as a genius." To all lovers of Chopin's music I would recomnend your acquiring the Alan Walker's biography of Chopin entitled
'Fryderyk Chopin....A Life and Times' available both in hardback and softback. A fantastic , comprehensive read , illustrated and including extracts from his compositions.

I auditioned before the great Rubinstein in Los Angeles as a child as a member of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians at about age 9. I did not know who he was then, except as a judge of my performance. I didn't realize how great he was as a pianist until much later. He gave me good marks on my performance evaluation, and I got a gold NFSM pin shaped like a piano. A good grade was all that mattered to me then, today, I watch his white hair and strong hands and fingers on the keyboard in awe. He didn't have white hair when I played the piano for him, and I don't remember if he said much to me. Today I watch him in awe for the great man that he was and awe at his masterful performance, staid and under-dramatic, his music says it all and that is what is so beautiful and moves me to tears at the end of his performance!
I can't believe he is age 88 here and to see the agility of his hands performing is just awesome!

I absolutely love Rubinstein’s musical sensibility, there’s something that happens between him and the keys and the strings, an alchemy happens, much more than the tone he gets out of every piano he plays. I love to hear many concert pianists play Chopin, specifically, but also schubert, Brahms etc. But then I listen to Rubinstein again and I realize that he’s reached a whole different level than the other ones.

Arthur Rubenstein performs this Chopin Concerto with such grace and aplomb; it's entirely enjoyable to watch and listen to, even sublime. His interpretation is authoritative, even a benchmark to which all future performers may take note and aspire. I was really exhausted and the lilting melodies wafted me off to sleep briefly. All in all, a totally breathtaking performance by a 20th century icon of the piano.

A great display of musical elegance and technique in the playing of this great piano concerto by Maestro Rubinstein, especially at the late age when he recorded this composition. I personally think he delivers
strength, musical precision and the exact notes and markings as written and delivered by Frédéric Chopin, his compatriot. A classic, impersonal recording for the ages.

In the 80s I was working in Poland, where Chopin is a national hero. Every 5 years they have the Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition. It lasts a week or more and Poles were glued to the TV every night. We bribed and were lucky to get tickets for the final, and this was the test piece. As not a piano expert, it was nevertheless fascinating to discern it played in different ways by the 6 finalists. Fabulous experience and this now my favourite Chopin.

The hands of the Master. His art, his musical eloquence, his strength, his tenderness, it is all channeled through his hands. He doesn't move his body to call attention to himself, nor his facial expression except to glance almost imperceptibly at the conductor. I just love it how Mr Rubinstein uses his hands to convey the message of the music that obviously sings in his own heart. Thanks to my mother, he became my favourite pianist when I was a child. He's still the best. And Mr Previn, well, he's such a great conductor, words fail me. Thanks for sharing this. Greetings from Australia.
