Important to point out, that the promotional single ‘Digital Bath’ (peaked at #16 on the charts) performed better than the official 2nd single ’Back To School’ (peaked at #27 on the charts). So ‘Maverick Records’ should have had more faith in the original material of ‘White Pony’ instead of pushing for more ’nu-metal’ material and the reissue of the record. On the 06.18.2020 Deftones confirmed a reissue of ‘White Pony’ which will include remix versions of the original record. Songs will be remixed by guest artists. One of whom has been confirmed to be ‘Dj Shadow’. The new 5th edition of ‘White Pony’ will be titled ‘Black Stallion’. Apologies that this video is not as detailed as I’d like it to be since I did not plan to make it initially. So I had quite a bit of time constraint with this one. But 20 is a big number so it had to be done! I hope you enjoy this video! Thank you, JD
I’m no metal head but I love that album so much. It’s so atmospheric, different and unique. It’s a classic for me and head and shoulders above everything their peers were dropping at the time. The album doesn’t sound dated today at all because you really don’t have much to compare it to. Yeah you could compare it to the other metal releases from that era but that wouldn’t be fair in most cases. They’ve definitely managed to set themselves apart from any trends going on at the time even though it wasn’t commercially profitable. It’s definitely a timeless classic and I could never get bored of it. The song Change is in my top 5 favorite metal songs of all time, it’s all about the vibes man. Another great video man. This channel needs to grow ASAP ! This is grade A quality content right here and I know for a fact there’s an audience for it.
08:12 this is completely true. I loved all the classic Nü Metal bands back in the day but never heard a single Def Tones song, and only ever heard them mentioned twice: once by a kid in school and once by Linkin Park in a live track (can't remember which one). I discovered Def Tones much later and regret not having them in my life earlier. Thanks for this video.
I know right? It's such a shame too... Takes time to get into them but once you do it's hard to let go. I'd say they are the best band to have come out of that scene, as they transcended the genre with this album... and I feel like they are one of few bands that I truly look forward to hearing new music from. Glad you enjoyed the video! ;)
@@brunovieira4630 It's essentially what it is, alternative metal... someone just came up with the name for when there is rapping in an alternative metal band... labels will just remain as such but bands that survived the hype overcame any labelling and pigeonholing.
My cousin first introduced me to Deftones with the song, "Change (House of Flies)" back in 2008 and I fell in love with the song, I had to check out more from them. I love "White Pony" and listening to that album all through college helped me get through some tough times back then. The best thing about this band is that none of their albums sound alike and they are all good in their own special ways like Slipknot. Just like Slipknot, Deftones doesn't have a single bad album in their discography. I am so looking forward to their new album. I hope it comes out soon. With what little snippets they posted about it on social media, it sounds like it's going to be good. Also, I really wish they will release the Eros sessions as like an EP for another album anniversary.
Hey Beagle! They really don't have a bad album that's true. Even though I was not a big fan of 'GORE' I still can't say it was bad. A very unique band and I really am looking forward to new music from them as well. As far as I know at the moment they plan to release the new LP in September. As for 'EROS' an EP would be sweet. I agree... even though they say that they are not all that happy with that record I think we still should get to hear the last record Chi was on.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask Oh definitely. I feel like Chi would want the fans to hear it. From hearing the only two (or three?) songs that are known from it, "Eros" sounds like an amazing album. Even though the band says they don't really care for it, they should release it one day. RIP Chi.

Like always amazing JOB! All the info and details, cool bro!!! Have you seen ENTERTAINMENT ME A FILM ABOUT DEFTONES...? It really gives more inside of the mindset back then.
Thanks man I appreciate it! Yes, I have seen it partially. But it was mostly live performances if I recall correctly. Ugh, you know I wish I could have added a bit more into this video, but I was so short on time because of the album's anniversary.
@@saysthemanbehindthemask yeah i know there is a lot, but i think you covered most importants stuff, there are 2 versions of the film (more high quality and different cuts) am yet to watch it.
I seen deftones at the iron duke hotel in Sydney Australia in 1998 , it was the best performance by a band I have ever witnessed, it was a small place the iron duke the little Pub shook and the crowd went off , the boys were on point that night I will never forget it, never.
There's no reason to believe that Korea couldn't have been made a radio single outside of the fear that it wouldn't pull the numbers of rap-rock/nu-metal. Difference is, of course, that Korea (and just about any other song from the album) has the kind of longevity that would see it continue to get airplay even two decades later, if the Record Company just stuck with it. Not complaining though. I personally do feel that the re-issue with Mini-Maggit does a great job with it's original Pink Maggit at bookending the album with teenage angst, and does a good job of bringing new people unfamiliar with a post-2000's Deftones sound into the mix by mixing alot of the elements from White Pony without spoiling the album. I've always been curious about why 'The Boy's Republic' came about. Alot of people forget about it and there's not really any type of story about why that song was made the bonus in the limited edition re-releases. Good job on the video and it's place within the year 2000 and it's influence on the band going forward. Even today you can still hear Steven pushing for harder works while Chino continues to work on experimental stuff.
Korea was way too unconventional. There is no way the record label would have went for that. Though they did release hexagram from the next album. I don’t think there’s much of a story behind ‘The Boy’s republic’ they did a lot of of covers over the years. It’s kind of a norm for them, they just needed to have an additional track for limited edition which strangely was released along with the original issue of the album. I hope ‘Back to school’ did bring new people in but if they never heard of deftones they sure were surprised when they heard the rest of the record... as I said in the video it was very different from the rest of the record. Well ‘Gore’ was very much Chino’s record which I can’t say I was too happy about as Stephen said he had little to do with writing that record. And it’s my least favourite of their albums. Even though I love Chino’s song writing I can’t listen to his stuff outside of Deftones because he tends to sound too bland and Repetitive. I’m not the biggest fan of their very light songs. ‘White Pony’ of course a very important record for 2000’s.
i remember when white pony came out, i was NOT into nu metal shit at all. but i saw the video for change one night, and it just struck me. to me, they were trying to do with metal what radiohead was trying to do to british rock with ok computer. it just seemed to be all about moving a genre forward. there was this mysterious, almost lynchian kind of surreal giallo menace, and also this DEEP synthpoppy sort of romantic ambience. their music is like a thick foggy nightmare and a drugged out sex dream happening at the same time.
Good morning, very true. I am well Thanks.. I used to listen to them a lot then just lost interest. I put there music on when u said u where going to do a doc. Cuz of the album 20th
Ouch this came out longer than I wanted it to be, sorry. Obviously you don't have to read the whole thing. Good answer and I kinda wish it was true but from my experience it's Deftones and Tool! If I look for projects in Alt. metal or Prog sub-genres these 2 are always mentioned as inspiration... yet nobody sounds like them or actually seem to be inspired by them judging by music or sounds TOO MUCH like them to an extent where it's a copy paste of their styles. There's usually like no middle ground. I find that these 2 bands have very unique styles and emulating them is just pointless. I think the same about FNM but I think they are really not that well known to wider audiences as their music in all honesty is not for everyone and takes a bit of effort to get into, very much like Deftones... but FNM is probably more experimental in general... when I think Deftones or Tool they for the most part have this overarching feel to them where's FNM has much larger colour palate to their sound and they are not always as serious as the other two... even though Tool have their cynicism but it's largely in their earlier work and just in lyrics... their music always remains on this serious moody side or something a bit more melodic but still serious. Regardless I love all 3 bands! But I think FNM is more old school and kinda OG of the alt metal!
I personally cannot pinpoint a single favourite album by them as quite a few of them are really good but "Self titled" for is also one of their best efforts along with White Pony.
