      +Max Oak in all seriousness, turn down the bass on the guitar for metal tones. Especially on 7/8 string songs. The lowest notes on guitar are there for overtones. Like the icing on a cake or the bass drums that sound like typewriters. Bass guitars are the meat on the bones.

      +Jack Smith people like to think they are unique snowflakes. In reality with super low tunings/8 strings, you turn down the bass unless you're going for a muddy tone. it's really that simple.

    • @jacksmith4460
      @jacksmith4460 8 років тому

      ***** maybe i want a muddy tone lol maybe my guitar is naturally very bright? Also i would like to add there is a general difference in taste in tone and texture between Euro and US metal/heavyness, In general (not always but as a rule of thumb) the North American stuff tend to have a smoother texture and more seperation, a lot of Euro heavy bands wants a very raw almost uncontrolled mix, Snowflakes or icicles :D
      and foot note i use down tuned 6 string (c -drop), it i dont think has as much importance there

    Nice video, but i really dont see why you call it "Mixing with EZMix2" when you're not. Sure you use a few presets, but then you use Logic and other plugins to mix it. Would be cool to see a video where you actually use EZMix2 to mix a song.

    • @matthewheckman4522

      That's becaue EzMix 2 is a tool, not the end all be all for mixing a song. I use multiple plug-ins, different virtual instruments, etc when mixing.

    Eznix 2 is definitely a good tool to use as a reference to a tone. This plugin absolutely does not solve the key to the ultimate mix. I already see comments that it's misleading but the same goes for these other amp simulators. Every amp simulator requires decent knowledge when it comes to mixing. Now I will say this. Ezmix has give me a major light bulb moment and things I never really thought of before when it came to mixing guitars and bass. I've never used the drum presets but i'll test it out soon. . I own Bias amp 2, Bias fx and Fortin and I'll be honest, I often get overwhelmed with the amount of choices I have and Ezmix has done the job well with the other plugins I use for compression, eqing, and even stereo imaging to provide better frequency range within my mix. I also use the mastering presets with adding additional tweaking with Ozone. To put it short, Ezmix is a valuable tool based on your needs, you don't have to be the biggest beginner or pro, it's merely a tool for you to use in your production.

    I've had the same experience trying to balance real amps with the EZMix2 presets, it's sometimes frustrating to go through the motions of guitar tracking only to find an EZMix2 amp preset that's within 10% of the tone I can duplicate traditionally... and that last bit usually gets solved with EQ and some mixing butter. For home studio recording artists without racks of amps to do reamping with, EZMix2 can really be a great way to diversify your guitar amp tones as well as gain access to a host of other useful presets (especially for vocals).

  • @TheoHarvey

    Sweet video on this man! I've been looking at it for ages, do you think that it takes a lot of the skill out of mixing + anyone can click a preset and get a good sound?
    Or do you think that you still need a good ear to get a good mix with it..
    Still looks like an epic go to plugin though!!

      Unfortunately people always find things to complain about when it's not them doing the job, I just think it would give every instrument its place, after all the work you put into it it's a shame to cut part of it out

      @victortatu 8 років тому

      +Ryan Bruce (Fluff) I agree with MrGabbo97 with the fact that the bass needs more presence. But imho level is not the main problem. My main criticism is that the bass sounds floppy, lacks attack almost as if the string were really loose.

  • @lancemalvey597
    @lancemalvey597 8 років тому

    Though i'm not using Ez mix this still helped me with my recording issues I have some looped parts and for some reason when recorded my looper drops in volume adding a touch of gain to it brought the volume back up and EQ'ing the mids and using a low cut thats barely on helped that situation, But my high cut and low filters even though they work they make my tone sound like trash so when i practice those songs i now just use a mid boost with a gate and a weeee bit of compression it's not "My sound" that i worked out getting but it's close enough to work.

    Dear mister Bruce,
    You've got an amazing channel and really good videos, The quality is outstanding! But, could you in the future disclose when your videos are payed or endorsed. I see all my youtube subscriptions review the same products around the same time. It feels like you guys are selling me things. For instance, every body reviewed the Positive Grid software around the same time.
    Are you showing me how to mix things or are you selling me EZ-mix or a bit of both?
    Keep the lovely videos coming dude!
    JvD.

    • @joelvandam
      @joelvandam 8 років тому +14

      +Ryan ‘Fluff’ Bruce What do you mean?
      I just think it's fair to disclose this information. If you check out "game reviews" more and more often the reviewer tells his audience on youtube that he has been payed to review the game. Like you were very open in your affiliation with Panama amps. You telling that makes me as an consumer better informed if you'd review a Panama amp.

    • @ChristopherOdd
      @ChristopherOdd 8 років тому +4

      +Joël van Dam I agree with what you're saying. I have the opportunity to do sponsored videos for gaming companies sometimes, and even though it's obvious that it's a sponsored video, I think the viewers generally appreciate when I'm up front about it. People are giving you shit for some reason, but your request is very reasonable and transparency can do wonders for people.

    • @kallydi
      @kallydi 8 років тому +5

      +kyle grossi Because there is always a possibility of being biased for that product, especially when money has changed hands. It's not that paid reviews are a bad thing and most people dont really care if its paid or not, but disclosing the deals properly would prevent all misconception.
      I think it would be fair and honest to tell how things really are rether than thinking "Well they probably know and it doesnt really matter"

    Hey Ryan, love your videos, very knowledgeable and entertaining. I was wondering if you can DI a guitar track into your DAW then add VSTs for tone afterwards to avoid the latency some of the plug-ins can cause. Thanks, Ps: You inspired me to start studying in sound engineering, keep on the good work.

    • @OfLefty
      @OfLefty 8 років тому

      Of course. All the Amp Simulation software does is add to a signal. You can record a di without the effect if your PC can't run the plugins without having to crank your buffer and latency. I actually prefer to do this for bass guitar.

    Hi Ryan, great videos. I use an ESP EC-256 with a passive seymour duncan Dimebucker for the main pick up. When I am in in easy mix2 how would you suggest approaching the EQ's for this pick up? I notice you seemed to know exactly what to do to compensate for your guitars pick up!
    Another guitar of mine has an active EMG 81 main pick up - would you approach this differently?
    I love the presets on guitar gods 3 but I sometimes still find I get nasty noise which is hard to eliminate perfectly.... Any advice on this would be cool! My set up is Logic Pro X & Toontrack EZmix2 (with various expansion packs) only. Do you think I need an additional "Waves" plug in to achieve a professional sound or can everything be done great with logic?
    Cheers!

  • @elisile2100
    @elisile2100 8 років тому +5

    Okay, first off, let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. I love Fluff's channel and think he's an amazing and helpful guy, otherwise I wouldn't be subscribed to him. Okay, now that that's clear, I do have one concern about this video. I feel like it's slightly misleading, especially to those who are brand new to mixing (or audio engineering in general). As people who have been doing this a while, we obviously understand that you can't just throw EZmix everywhere and expect pro results. So it's no surprise to us that he's using some (slight) post- processing EQ and compression. However, I feel like the way Toontrack advertises, and the way this video is set up, there is this misconception that EZmix is a pro recording solution. In this video, Fluff even said (at least twice) that this is a mix done completely with EZmix2. But even he has to use like three different post- eq's on the rhythm tracks, and post- eq and compression on like every other track as well. I just hope that people aren't mislead into believing (as I once was) that EZmix is all you need for pro recordings, whereas even in this video designed to advertise it, there still is post- processing applied. I don't know, maybe I'm just reading too much into it.
    But as always Ryan, thank you for taking time to make these videos for us. We appreciate it very much.

    There seem to be some big misconceptions about EZMix:
    It is NOT a DAW.
    It is NOT a mixing program.
    IT IS plugins to enhance and make mixing easier.
    So please stop saying.."He used Logic to mix" or "He used other plugins". By that reasoning he shouldn't have used a guitar, bass, A.I., computer or monitors/headphones either.
