A little tip for everyone in here. If you wanna make your midi drums sound more realistic, find the biggest room in your house, play the drum tracks through your speakers at a nice loud volume, and place a single mic in the other side of the room. Then use the recorded track as a room mic. Experiment with placement for best results. When you mix it, be sure to line the track with your drums( it will be slightly delayed). General practice is to compress the heck out of this track.
+Gordon Tubbs agreed. I definitely use metal machine more than any other pack i have. Believe it or not, the Nashville pack has some good sounds as well.
Yeah that's why I'm always skeptical of a new EZX. I'm sure the Progressive EZX for this year's Metal Month is awesome, but it's so hard to justify getting a new expansion that doesn't offer a wider diversity of what I already have. And to be honest, people can probably just get by with the default samples in EZDrummer 1 & 2 with enough mixing....
+Gordon Tubbs I have Made of Metal, Electronic and Pop! expansions. The Pop expansion is actually pretty versatile, it has some hybrid sounds that work for alot of different stuff
Glad to hear someone else fell in love with the drum sounds on The Hunter. So punchy and snappy, but keeps that retro vibe. The tom sounds on that album are basically perfect.
I'm glad i watched this video again, because i was just mixing my EZDrummer using the stereo output mode, instead of the multi output. Now i feel like my new mixes with MIDI drums will be much more SICK
I always watch, never comment. I knew this video existed and I'm sure i've watched it before i had ezdrummer 2. I was remixing an old song of mine with the plugin and it sounded super anemic. Thank you wise Fluff for showing me the way to make ezdrummer 2 sound badass in a mix.
Really helpful that you use the stock Logic plugins, a lot of videos will be using super expensive external compressors and stuff. Needed a good tutorial for EZdrummer mixing for a while now, thank you for making one that's easy to understand! :)
My favorite recorded drums were from Norma Jeans's "Bless the Child and Kiss the Martyr" album. So deep, clean, and real sounding. I haven't heard many like that since. The breakdowns in "memphis will be laid to rest" were made by those drums.
EZDrummer is a literal god send, especially for getting ideas down quickly for your band to then rework. Whether it's for scratch mixes or just to fill out any song you've written, EZDrummer is a must buy. To be honest, the combination of Cubase 8 Elements, Focusrite 2ii2, and EZ drummer, is a killer combo for a home recording situation. For less than $400 you can be on your way to making high quality scratch studio mixes.
Nice tutorial but there is a flaw here. What about gain staging your main output is getting slammed pretty hard & that's with only the drums. When I'm mixing I try to keep the drum buss at least under -10db then you've plenty of headroom left for all other instruments.
How can you apply the mixering of all the drum parts, like in the video? 2:05 I mean, I'm having trouble mixering the drums because I can't get this type of mixer that allows you to eq the snare separately, the kick separately, the hi-hat separately, an so on... I can only have a single track for the drums, and the standard equalizations: lows, mids, mid highs, and highs, that applies to ALL the drum set. Sounds shitty :'( Help pliz, I'm using cubase 5 (32bit)
go into the mixer tab on your EZ drummer interface and route the individual drum components to separate tracks. Then go and switch on those tracks under the EZ drummer track in your DAW. there should be a tutorial on youtube for your DAW
Thanks so much for the video Fluff, drums have been something really lacking in my mixes and now ive got a much more rounded and punchy sound from Ezdrummer
Hey Fluff, copy.com was discontinued. Could you reupload template and preset? You would help me out a bunch. Thanx in advance and keep up the good work.
Good video Fluff. Nice and concise. This should help a lot of people out to get started, unfortunately it just takes lots of trial and error to get to where you hear what works and what doesn't work. Thanks for being you Fluff :)
this is cool. My midi drums never sound how i want them to. sometimes i play the track through an amp and re-record the tracks. That sometimes makes it sound better, depending on what type of sound im looking for. I use ableton/reason, but this was still pretty helpful.
Thanks Fluff for doing these videos. I watched this a few weeks ago and was totally lost with all the talk of buses and whatnot. I've since downloaded your Reaper template and have been going through your tutorials. I've edited the template to match this EZDrummer version and I've learned no much. I feel like a hot-shot producer now, although I'm still far from it. My mixes sound pro now, it's a shame the material is sub-standard. You would happen to know of a "talent" plugin by any chance?
Extremely helpful video Fluff. Haven't upgraded to EZD2 yet. I got SD2 a month before it dropped. Wish I had waited!! I use an E-kit rather than program, but this tutorial solves a lot of issues I was having. Thanks Bro. P.s. The Rest, repose teaser was SICK!
Fluff great video. One comment on the template though. The EZdrummer built-in "Compreshor" and reverb channels are being routed to output 1 along with the Kick drum. Was this by design? if not, do you suggest just route them to their own output or mute them alltogther since you are already doing parallel compression and reverb outside of EZDrummer? Thanks in advanced
+Tim Robin +SirBennerth Thanks guys, much appreciated! I've only just started to screw around with midi drums, I spent hours seperating the midi into seperate files to bus each one.... Good to know this is a thing!
Why do you have a limiter on the "Ez main" track? Which track has the actual EZdrummer VST? The EZ main and Drums track, how do they complement each other? And last, comp on output, why? Amazing video, this has helped me a alot thank you so much. Been watching it 20 times now atleast.
Looks like the template download link is broken. I know this is an old video so I can understand that. Any way you might have a new link that we can use to download your template with? Thanks!
Hey Fluff, great video as always! Quick (and probably stupid) question: When you did the parallel comp, did the Snare and Kick channels also went to the master bus, or they went to the compressor channel, to the drumms bus and THEN to the master bus? Thanks man, keep the amazing job!
Hey Ryan i was just wondering about your thoughts on ESP and ESP LTD, i have a LTD V-300 and its my favorite guitar and thanks for hooking me on Cleartone!
1 - You have to activate multiple-output in the vst options. 2- After you activate all the outputs you are going to use, you just go to the mixer and route the instruments to the desired channels. The orange number above the names is the output #. For example: Kick is 1, Snare is 2, Toms is 3, etc... If you have Cubase, I can help you with the first step. (VST Multiple Output routing is different in every DAW).
that intro tune is sick. a few questions of course. what guitar presets are you using with ezmix2 in the intro? doesnt ezd2 use 16 bit samples? what bitrate do you record at? thanx
With the ever expanding feature set in Logic Pro 10, is there a reason you prefer EZ Drummer 2 instead of the internal drummers and drum sounds in Logic?
i honestly dont care for that snare sound... you should get something close to a Cyclone Temple sounding snare. if u dont know about em, they are an underground thrash band from the 90s and their guitarist was one of the worlds fastest guitar players. he did this sick double gallop in his picking. it is amazing.
i associate the beginning fill so much with karnivool that every time i heard it and it didn't go into Simple Boy i got really thrown off.. also +1 for thanks for stock plugins! thanks dood
I like to write my stuff in standard notation, then convert the MIDI file over to Logic. Is it possible to just apply the ToonTrack tones to pre-written MIDI?
how do you export the drums to all the different tracks from EZDrummer? i've been manually separating each hit but how did he get the room mic and individual noted separated on the mixer?
just my curiosity ... is there any bass midi which sound as good as EZdrum or superior drum? i know that you play bass .. but you know ... in case you lazy and want to feel in bass with your midi/USB keyboard
the only thing i want to know is what should i do with cymbals and high hats should i just boost the high end slihgltly and remove all the low end and maybe add a bit of mids cause thats wht i have been doin and its ounds alright but i dont really know what eleseto do in terms of getting teh optimal sound out of them
+Alex Rooney Import a song into your session, something similar to what you are mixing and that you like the sound of. Then just flip back and forth and compare the sounds of the drums (and other instruments) to get a reference. You can even use multiple reference tracks.
+metalrhoads so basiclly piss of LArs and rip his drum tracks of the internet and import them in and try to get somehere close to his hi hat sound is what you're saying oay i can do that UA-cam TO MP3 HERE I COME!
Hey Fluff, I really dig this one. You turned me on to check out EZ drummer 2 from using Superior Drummer 2.0 and I gotta say, I kinda regret spending the money on SD2.0 haha.. Real informative. I would like to ask though, why do you use limiters, as well as how to you set them? I found the rest of the video to be real useful but thats confused me a bit. Are the limiters key for you?
Just got the Metal Machinery SDX and I'm diggin it, but I've been wondering about the Extreme library of thrash by Dirk. Anyone have any feedback on it? How did you do that artwork on your sound panels looks fuckin killer @Ryan Bruce
Would any be able to guide me through how Fluff has 'split' the midi data across multiple channels? Instead of EzDrummer just coming out through just one channel on its own?
+ThatGuyOnGuitar I think that it may differ depending on which DAW you're using, but in Reaper you can set EZDrummer 2 as a VST / plugin, make a new track, click "Add FX" on the track and select EZDrummer 2. It'll then ask you whether you want to have all of the individual drums going to different channels (multi-channel routing), or just to one stereo channel. Hope this helps!
A little tip for everyone in here.

That sounds interesting. I'll give that a go sometime with the logic presets.
That’s a great idea ! Il give that a go !
great idea!!
I read that Michael Jackson's engineer did this to make midi keys and drums sound real.
At 10:51, accidental Sean Connery:"The compreshor.."Great vid, Ryan!
The Metal Machine EZX is a must buy... the snare selection alone is worth price of admission.
+Gordon Tubbs agreed. I definitely use metal machine more than any other pack i have. Believe it or not, the Nashville pack has some good sounds as well.

+Gordon Tubbs That is true, check this out: nadihr.bandcamp.com/track/blind it's default EZDrummer 1
+Gordon Tubbs I have Made of Metal, Electronic and Pop! expansions. The Pop expansion is actually pretty versatile, it has some hybrid sounds that work for alot of different stuff
I totally agree with the Pop! EZX on being multi-genre applicable. Very useful if you're doing more than metal...
If you're looking for his downloads for the template and presets, they're at: www . blackmetalbicycle . com /downloads/
Having just got EZdrummer 2 this tutorial type video has been a huge help in making my drums find their place in the mix. Thank you!
That kick is so brutal and in your face, I love it \m/!
Thank you for this, super useful as usual!
My god, your playing style is my absolute favorite.
Thank you for this! I stored all of the presets into my go to plugins when mixing drums and I'm loving the sound! Thanks for the info!
Really helpful that you use the stock Logic plugins, a lot of videos will be using super expensive external compressors and stuff. Needed a good tutorial for EZdrummer mixing for a while now, thank you for making one that's easy to understand! :)

Ahh derp. Some fan I am.
Glenn Fricker could probably even appreciate that MIDI drum sound

hey fluff the download link doesn't work anymore, can you uploaded again, thank you
When the drums in the mix fluff, pop it like it's hot, pop it like it's hot, pop it like it's hawwwttttt.
best timing ever i was just mixing some midi drums as i found this video so perfect timing
This video is exactly what I was looking for to get inspired again. Loved the song too. Thanks man.
How can you apply the mixering of all the drum parts, like in the video? 2:05

That's a hauntingly eerie melody Fluff! I fucking loved that!
"compressure" -Fluff (2015)
+NeoGekkogEaR does any other daw have that EQ box on the mixer like this for windows? cant run logic on windows but really want that feature
+NeoGekkogEaR fl studio has a eq that you can put on any channel and it will be personal for that channel.
@@feel.s1304 like every daw ever
Thanks so much for the video Fluff, drums have been something really lacking in my mixes and now ive got a much more rounded and punchy sound from Ezdrummer
Hey Fluff, copy.com was discontinued. Could you reupload template and preset? You would help me out a bunch. Thanx in advance and keep up the good work.
Thanks Fluff. Super clear and easy to follow.
Dude this rocks, I remember when this first came out. Super helpful dude, jogged my memory on some really good tips.
Good video Fluff. Nice and concise. This should help a lot of people out to get started, unfortunately it just takes lots of trial and error to get to where you hear what works and what doesn't work. Thanks for being you Fluff :)
Fluff I love your tutorial vids man, wish you did more of them they're really helpful!!
you should make your own album man!!! just only guitars, bass and drums. it sounds awesome!
great vid fluff daddy! Just taught me how to parallel compress! doing it on all tracks now
Fluff you fantastic man, always wanted to know! Guitars next maybe?
compression is really nice, make the snare stand out a bit and the crash not be too overwhelming. nicely done ! :D
this is cool. My midi drums never sound how i want them to. sometimes i play the track through an amp and re-record the tracks. That sometimes makes it sound better, depending on what type of sound im looking for. I use ableton/reason, but this was still pretty helpful.
Don't use either of these programs, but the overall tips should be extremely helpful for me. You've answered my prayers.
when busing channels like you do at 9:40 does both channels go to main out or just the buschannel (EZComp)
That intro song tho. Is it downloadable anywhere?
Thanks Fluff for doing these videos. I watched this a few weeks ago and was totally lost with all the talk of buses and whatnot. Heh I always think of the Hunter when mixing my toms as well! The beginning of Black Tongue FTW.
Thanks,Fluff!
Why have you boosted frequencies in the snare than aren't even being sounded?
Any hints of Superior Drummer going on sale this month?? 😀
That Schecter sounds so good!
Some beautiful stuff there Ryan Bruce. You got a band?
Riff Wars!!!! Riff Wars!!!! Riff Wars!!!! Riff Wars!!!! Riff Wars!!!! Riff Wars!!!!
thank you for sharing this fluff!
Did you kick a hole in your wall under your desk ?
Well done. Thanks. Unfortunately your download link doesn’t work. Please have you got a new link to share.
Let's say I'd wanna play music in the style of Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, etc. What expansion would you suggest?
+Ryan Bruce Hey fluff, Im making a project called Falkland and i want the very fat snare that you have so it sounds better?
How are you bussing each drum group separately while they're all in one track? Sorry for noob question :)
+Tim Robin +SirBennerth Thanks guys, much appreciated! I've only just started to screw around with midi drums, I spent hours seperating the midi into seperate files to bus each one.... Good to know this is a thing!
+Tim Robin Do you know if the same thing can be done with addictive drums? lol
What is the sub bass plugin doing on the drums track. That's like the only thing left out 😩
Even though the post is older, would it be possible to upload the template again?
every time u start one of these videos i always hear "today on Riff Beardson's Gear"
Why do you have a limiter on the "Ez main" track? Which track has the actual EZdrummer VST? The EZ main and Drums track, how do they complement each other? And last, comp on output, why? Amazing video, this has helped me a alot thank you so much. Been watching it 20 times now atleast.
Hi Fluff thank you very much for your videos. The download link to the Logic Template doesn't work anymore, can you uploaded it again?
cool shirt Fluff!
Looks like the template download link is broken. I know this is an old video so I can understand that. Any way you might have a new link that we can use to download your template with?
Thanks!
@Ryan Bruce hey! Could you please re-upload the template? Copy was discontinued :(
Hey Fluff, great video as always!
Quick (and probably stupid) question: When you did the parallel comp, did the Snare and Kick channels also went to the master bus, or they went to the compressor channel, to the drumms bus and THEN to the master bus?

Hey Ryan i was just wondering about your thoughts on ESP and ESP LTD, i have a LTD V-300 and its my favorite guitar and thanks for hooking me on Cleartone!
subscribing ... awesome tone. Love your input.
Can you maybe create a similar template in Reaper for a simple Ezdrummer 2 use? Thank you :)
Where does the small echo in the snare come from? Where in the mix chain?
why does the sound cymbals end very soon? immediately...
How do you get channel strips for drums in EZ drummer? I can't figure it out.
Thank you Ryan! Great vid!!
from your experience what is the best way to make a beat with midi controls? I am by no means a drummer and would like to know what your process is.
that intro tune is sick. a few questions of course. what guitar presets are you using with ezmix2 in the intro? doesnt ezd2 use 16 bit samples? what bitrate do you record at? thanx
With the ever expanding feature set in Logic Pro 10, is there a reason you prefer EZ Drummer 2 instead of the internal drummers and drum sounds in Logic?
This is great, thanks man. If only I understood all the buss stuff.
since we're talking about EZX, what do you think about the new post rock expansion Fluff ?
i honestly dont care for that snare sound... you should get something close to a Cyclone Temple sounding snare. if u dont know about em, they are an underground thrash band from the 90s and their guitarist was one of the worlds fastest guitar players. he did this sick double gallop in his picking. it is amazing.
Why is that Kemper in the back is working then? :)
Man I could have used something like this like 6 years ago when I first bought Superior lol
I see in your mixer, your drums are separated to different channels, but the drum track is in one region. How did you do that?
would you recommend side chain compression for laying bass and kick. whats a good result useing logic x compresser settings
The question is!!!!!!!!!! Is it a big transfer from going to logic pro 9 to 10?? Do I have to re-Learn a lot????
You trigger your drums via the keyboard only?
Is this template still available anywhere? The link redirects somewhere completely unrelated...
i associate the beginning fill so much with karnivool that every time i heard it and it didn't go into Simple Boy i got really thrown off.. also +1 for thanks for stock plugins! thanks dood
very helpful (and coincidentally very currently needed) tutorial. thanks as always. oh! and by the way, fuck yeah for the return of Betty White
Hi Riffs is this template still up to download I try but is was able to download can you help
Hey Fluff! Any thoughts on the Yamaha thr amps? I'm considering them as an introductory recording solution. The thr 10x with cubase seems pretty good.
I like to write my stuff in standard notation, then convert the MIDI file over to Logic. Is it possible to just apply the ToonTrack tones to pre-written MIDI?
hi - how did you expand the separate drum bits to mix so you can add the eq? thx
how do you export the drums to all the different tracks from EZDrummer? i've been manually separating each hit but how did he get the room mic and individual noted separated on the mixer?
just my curiosity ... is there any bass midi which sound as good as EZdrum or superior drum? i know that you play bass .. but you know ... in case you lazy and want to feel in bass with your midi/USB keyboard
guys, how can i panoram midi drums if theres no individual track for kick snare and etc.?

hey fluff I'm a drummer and is their and software that I can put guitar tracks over my drumming
Hey Fluff, I really dig this one. You turned me on to check out EZ drummer 2 from using Superior Drummer 2.0 and I gotta say, I kinda regret spending the money on SD2.0 haha.. Real informative. Hi, Fluff! How about to do some online lessons about mixing?
It's always been pain in the ass for me to mix toms properly (
Thanks for vid!
