I don't have old money but I do like proper dress and have a tailor. I don't have brands on my shirts unless I'm chopping wood in the backyard . For almost a decade I wore cheap fashion, but I bought it on vacation in states that had economic issues. The trip paid for itself. Now, I have more classic, timeless wear of great quality that fits better, looks better and that can be repaired. Always compliments even on the basic gear. Peacoat, shirt, jeans without brands, that fit. A few matching belts, nice socks that compliment the ensemble and you look better than people in an Ill fitting tuxedo.
In the upper Midwest you don't need very much "Old money", or "New money" for that matter, to stand out from the crowd. Just don't wear hoodies, shirtjacs, cargo shorts, new balance tennis shoes, (that you had on mowing the lawn) wrap around sunglasses, and a hoodie over your other hoodie. I’m from a well-educated white collar middle class family. I grew up in a blue collar working class semi-rural community. My parents dressed me in their style, and I did NOT fit in at my public school. Once I was in control, I consciously dressed down (or up) to fit in to whatever social environment I was in. So when somebody starts snottily defining “old money” style, I am very aware that they are quietly condemning “new money”. Not just the styling choices, but the people themselves. The genuinely “old money” people I have known can afford to buy quality, tasteful clothing that fits in with the circles they socialize with. Those I would consider “new money” are somewhat desperately trying to elevate themselves above their recent “no money” peers. I feel the popularity of these “old money” styling videos on UA-cam derives from “new money” people trying to look “old money”. People who are really “old money” don’t need to watch videos to learn how to dress, they already are comfortable in their style. Coming from the middle, I have flexibly dressed in a variety of styles, none of which changed who I was, but showed some respect to the social/economic status of those I associated with. At age 73, I have no use for either power suits or denim. I am most comfortable in cotton Chinos or wool slacks, and polo shirts or button down dress shirts with a sports coat or blazer. That is when I am in town. In the outdoors I wear sun hoodies and practical synthetic technical garments designed to function in sun, rain, wind, heat and cold. And I don’t care what some wanna-be UA-cam influencer claims “old money” people wear or avoid.

I dont exactly like where modern RL is going, but if I can get my hands on Ralph Lauren at a decent price I freaking will. Their products are so good, after years of use they go from very nice things to wear and transition to nice gym and dojo wear for me. Best clothing company imho.

Yeah, when I do get money, I won't have long enough for it to get old. Also, Mr. Narrarator, please note when I spelled out old I only used one of. It's not pronounced ooold.

A watch with a leather strap, which is not waterproof, will be ruined even on a gentleman's wrist while practicing water sports. But we agree, a stylish man does not choose a watch with a metal strap for a suit.
John T. Molloy gave that rule back in the 70s in his book Dress for Success. However, times change and rules are meant to be broken. We dont wear tails, cumerbunds, or spats either. Rolex Subs and GMTs are so classic they look great when worn in a suit. Plain black bezel on steel looks better than 2 tone GMTs with suits. Bulky, thick Seiko dive watches are not appropriate for dressier wear. Omega Speedmaster Pro has been around for 65 years and have remained understated and elegant. They look fine in a suit. Not so with Fortis or one of those Citizens with 5 dials, 3 bezels, and 25 functions. casio G shocks are completely out of the question.

There is always time and place for all styles of dressing. The name "Old Money" is weird. It is the classic European and New England dress style which has nothing to do with wealth, old or new. I think people simply want to wear styles that express freedom of choice. Some styles lack vibrancy, expression, life and can be boring

Sounds like you are more the “new money” type. Per stereotype, you probably go for loud, garish, displays of vanity. Lots of prominent labels like Gucci.
