Hey all. Apologies if the video/music cuts out strangely at any point. HBO did a copyright strike on the video so they basically own it now and have messed it up!
Poor people are just now finding out that rich people don’t dress like rappers
Rappers are rich people. This entire video also only applies to wealthy Westerners. Rich Arabs, Russians, Chinese etc. LOVE flashy brands and clothes. Quiet luxury is only a thing in Western Europe and North America
You say that like you’re not closer to being poor than you are to reaching wealth. Bootlicker.
@@FacitOmniaVoluntas.grown men don’t wear rapper costumes, not even rappers pretending they grew up in the hood. Pretending they were raised by single mothers who didn’t teach them anything, in section 8 housing
@@CaptainWillard830 Doesn’t change anything about what I said. Your perception of what constitutes a grown man doesn’t change the fact that the entire concept of “quiet luxury” only applies to wealthy westerners. Much of the world doesn’t abide by these principles.
@@FacitOmniaVoluntas.I think by rich people he’s referring to wealthy people with inherited money.
I think that niche fragrances are an even quieter form of quiet luxury, you don't even see it, you SMELL it
Unfortunately TikTok is ruining that too , I went to a authorized retailer of niche fragrances and saw a 12 year old asking his dad to get him a very popular niche fragrance cause he saw it on tik tok and also were other kids who looked like they were still in high school
@@Jaymoneybags718 the funny thing is that nieche perfumes arent even that expensive its prob the most affordable "be like the rich people" thing out there
@@Jaymoneybags718how is it spoiled? Because it's popular?
Rich people with 'old money' don't tend to be flashy because they have no insecurity about wealth and nothing to prove. I've known very wealthy who think nothing of wearing shooting suits with holes in them.
Lucas is mostly not flashy because he reflects the Swedish principle of “jantelagen”, a deeply rooted distaste for showing off success or wealth.
Very interesting, wasn’t aware of that!
Scandinavian, not just Swedish , Janteloven in Danmark-Norway
Tycker bara att det är onödigt och en aning löjligt när det går över styr, helt ärligt...
Adrien Brody's fit in succession is actually insane. It's so well put together.
Yeah agreed, and it’s one of the cheapest as well!
he is wearing clothes...
Would like a full video just focusing on Sam (Adrien Brody) !
Somehow Succession has become today's poster child for "quiet luxury" and the "old money" aesthetic. But anyone who paid attention to the show would know that Logan Roy was born poor and built his empire from nothing. First generation wealth. That is the definition of "new money."
Actually the irony of the show is the Logan Roy sons trying to be "old money" and trashing on new money when they are actually new money too lmao
I've said we are living in a "new" guilded age.
@@esser976when do they trash on new money?
@@negnatrepsej2903 Yes, i don't remember the episode but they laugh when someone was with logos on their purse and with a big purse
sad kendal wearing a t shirt from a brand that literally translates to depressed rich children is *chefs kiss
This is the clothing that stock image models wear
Haha I see what you mean!
Insane how much the clothes reflect each person’s personality, status, and motives. Such attention to detail really sets this show apart, along with its great plot, dialogue, and spectacular acting, it really does it all
i’m so mad this video only mentions twice or three times shiv’s outfits cause girl had THE style
I bought a Fleurette overcoat at Nordstrom. On the inside there’s a large embroidered signature patch that says made from 100% Loro Piana Italian wool. I paid $700 an actual Loro Piano coat cost over $3,000 on their website.
Good to distinguish between old money and stealth wealth because Roy family was not old money. The man himself was new rich and the kids just the second generation.
It’s not just about the generational aspect. You are overlooking the fact that these aren’t some run of the mill nouveau-rich types, they are one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the world (in the show they are based on the Murdoch family.)
Because they are so well known and in the public eye, it would be considered gauche and quite absurd to appear ostentatiously dressed, as it would imply a serious lack of concern regarding upholding the family’s image of status and professionalism.
You're right about the Scandinavian outfits not being too expensive... but they do carry legacy through brands. The Sweds are pretty proud of what they create and it shows
Yep definitely agree! And I bet the quality is very high, even though they are more affordable.
Examples of those brands
@@akllls617as a swede i would really recommend Tiger of Sweden, acne studios and our legacy!! But there are so many more!!
It is true that films and TV shows will use clothing as a “language” to get across a certain feeling/vibe about a character. They have been doing this for a long time. A good costume designer will do this. Why he/she will need to know the scene. Is it a scene with tension? Comedy? Sadness? Violence? Etc.
Also the color of that clothing plays a big part. Huge part. To help with the mood of that scene. Character.
A 700 dollar baseball cap is just...sending me.
I don't know where it's sending me, but good lord it isn't good.
Haha I know what you mean 🤣
Thanks for the links! I ordered one of each. 😆
Hahaha. I got 2 just in case one of them got dirty 🤣
That royal connection makes all the sense in the world.
I love merchandise without logos but I want the type of clothing that emanates utmost quality by looks and feels of the outfit.
This video was so intriguing. I find it fascinating how the writers of this show used clothing to communicate the personalities of the characters. I will definitely be checking out the show very soon. Great work!
Thanks for watching! I found it fascinating as well, it’s a superb show!
I love these video essays I didn't know I needed... 😅😅 Awesome video!
I still can’t comprehend wearing a $3000 sweater 😭
Crazy isn’t it!!
It's all relative. $3k for billionaires whose worth keeps growing billions a year is nothing. They are not the usual rich who we call rich. They are the rich people for the popular rich people we constantly see in the media. Imagine having a whole media empire where Lebron is just an employee and an asset of one of your divisions. They're off the scale😂imagine you want to buy some clothes for what it is to you paying 0.000000075% of your net worth (3,000 divided by 40 billion). Would you choose a certain shop or a brand just for the sake of getting into an empty place where you feel comfortable and have a more pleasant buying experience and get a high quality item? I would. Why any hassle for buying anything (queues and masses surrounding coming at you -they're famous-) when I can just get something really good and a good time for what it is nearly nothing to me?
When you’re worth tens if not hundreds of millions the price tag doesn’t seem so large
It's all relative. Imagine buying a sweater for $30. Sounds reasonable?
But there countries, where people earn $3 a day. to them $30 is half of their monthly wages.
that was so impressively efficient. many many other youtubers would've wrung an hour out of this but you were so refreshingly concise and on-topic.
Thank you! 🙏
Sorry, but £300 for a cotton cap is just as stupid as £2000 for a "loud" burberry handbag. Maybe even more stupid…
I agree!
Excellent character study and eye for the brands. Your content is top notch ❤. You just earned a sub.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
@jamesleung you should mention the where Ralph Lauren and Loro Piana draw their inspiration. The truly old school brands like New & Lingwood or Anderson & Sheppard
My own personal style has really evolved into the classic, yet rugged aesthetic when before it was a mess of streetwear and left of center elements
Yes same here!
Now streetwear do be hittin though
Great video. You've clearly conveyed the message of timeless, yet casual elegance is only visible to a discerning eye. This classic design is far underrated in today's myriad of labels.
Thanks so much!
fascinating! i could watch HOURS of content on this topic alone
Thank you!
This perfectly defines the term ‘fashion victim’.
You could perceive the quality of the attire in almost every scene. The baseball cap thing is a bit weird, tho. Sadly they did not care much about the pens and stationery.
Quiet fashion and 'old money' don't need external validation.
Thank goodness for this video! My 2024 collection can now be complete!
Hahaha 🤣
at this point they could easily just go full bespoke, guess that would miss the point though
another great video James!
Thank you! 🙏
Hi James! Was just wondering if you will ever get around to doing a summer styling video?
Absolutely will do! Probably around May. It's still Winter in the UK haha
the burberry bit in successions is not just about Burberry prints, but the size of it - the people in the show don't wear bags and accessories of this size in these settings. This point always gets neglected
Very good point!
True. What do you need to bring so badly? If you have anything important to keep near you, you could have a servant keep it safe in another room or something.
That’s $625 dollar cap you can get at GoodWill for $1.27 hahahahaha
would have been better if you had included the watches they wear
correct me if i'm wrong,, but the burberry bag was mocked because its a day bag/ tote worn on the intimate celebration / soiree. when women normally wear small bags and clutches. not once was it insulted for branding but rather how big it was. iirc
Everything about it is so “loud”
I've not seen Succession, but I found the analysis linking elements of some of the characters' personal/professional life to the way they dressed particularly interesting. I have on the odd occasion found myself feeling intrigued by others' piece selections, wondering if there's a facet of their personality or backstory that's on show at that given time.
Glad you enjoyed it, I was worried it might be a bit too niche of a topic. You should definitely give it a watch, it’s one of the best series I’ve personally seen!
the funny thing about kendall (jeremy strong) is that he doesn't have a nice bod, so even loro piana clothes look meh on him.
Currently getting a vicuna suit done and its cool seeing loro piana get such attention in this show.
That’s amazing to hear! Have had any vicuña before?
@@JamesLeung Yes! I got a shirt as a Christmas gift from a work friend and the hype is not exaggerated.
Pay the Peruvians who made your suit.
Yesss, another banger after the j. Crew vid
Appreciate the kind words, thank you!
Second this comment! Loved them both. Thanks for the time + effort!
Great video! Well produced
Thanks so much!
Such good show. Think I’m gonna watch it again lol
Haha me too!
Another really good video bro 👍🏻
Thanks so much mate!!
Showing no logos is the best thing. It’s opposite what the Chinese want. They are always wanting to show the logos so they can show off to their friends and family that they have some money. I lived in Asia and saw this constantly. I even saw one guy still wearing a stitched on temp logo of a suit on the outside of his jacket sleeve. I told him that it should be cut off he immediately said “NO”. That he wanted his friends and relatives to see that. To give everyone the impression that he had some money. Even though it looked odd to leave it on the jacket sleeve. That’s why I think most people buy these expensive pieces so they can then show off that designer label. It’s ALL about the label. The name. Crazy.
pathological mind set of some chinese
And really how is that different from spending a ton on something with no logos, hoping to be recognized by someone in the IYKYK crowd? At least they're being upfront about their intentions.
They are just NPCs.
Nice vid man, congrats!
Thank you!
4:19: my ears started bleeding
*Costume Design and Wardrobe Selection are not the same thing.
At 6:22 that is a Filson 258 a $625 padded computer bag.
Great spotting! Although I disagree with what the 'old money' aesthetic stands for. I don't think it's about choosing what's the most expensive, but about willing to pay a lot for high-quality garments, cause that's the former definition of luxury garments. Succession's costume design is interesting tho.
Thanks for your input, I agree!
omg such great video James!! I just started watching Succession and loved their costume. How were you able to identify each exact piece?
Thank you! There’s an Instagram page called succession fashion and they did all the hard work finding the pieces!
The Gucci always coincides with the breakdown(s)! Great vid
Thank you!
Succession is a great show. Best TV show last year hands down.
Totally agree! Might be one of my favourites of all time!
That ford hat is rad dude ! Great vid
Thank you man!!
I think that high quality, well thought out and well fitting clothing is usually worth the money. No doubt about it. But at what point does a material turn from cotton to gold? lol
You're such a nice guy, James.
Haha thank you very much!
Fantastic video
Thank you very much!
I love the pink flower lamp on the background, is it the kind that lights up when you touch it?
It has a pull string to turn it on, and you can light up the flowers in different combinations!
Rich people wear cheap stuff. That’s what I truly see. They just don’t care. Quiet luxury is just the new monogram for the masses. Rich people dont care about their look. They care about their words.
Great vid
Hey man
What is the sweater you are wearing?
Keep up the good work
Hey it’s from wings of liberty - look out for next weeks video I’ll go into a bit more detail 👍
I prefer it to the maximalist “creative types” or nepotism babies. While I might also argue that the Roy’s aren’t truly old money in the truest Old Money sense
What about belts?
Great Video :)
9:16 I need that robe LOL
10:20 The answer to this is Jantelagen / Law of Jante
Great!
Thanks!
would love to see a video where you show budget alternatives of these / give ideas about how to do quiet luxury without denting the bank account so much!
Very good idea!
bro… just thrift
I prefer quiet poverty, buying boring cheap clothes that hides my poverty
James, great content. Where is your sweatshirt from?
Thanks! It’s from wings of liberty 👍
New viewer here 👋 Great video! You mentioned that you’re Swedish. Our Legacy is my favorite brand right now. Are you a fan of theirs or own any pieces?
Welcome! Oh I’m not Swedish, I meant one of the characters is Swedish haha. Yes I love Our Legacy - I have their Camion Boots. I wish I had more!
This is probably a dumb question, but is more expensive cashmere less itchy? I purchased a $120 cashmere sweater from Everlane in 2019 and I could barely stand to wear it. I even attempted wearing another blouse underneath it but my skin said "nope!" whenever the cashmere touched me, haha. I've had my eye on a couple Ralph Lauren cashmere pieces but am worried that I'll have the same reaction!
In my experience, higher price doesn’t necessarily mean less itchy. I’ve had cheaper pieces that are soft and expensive pieces that itch like mad. I think it’s how they’re processed when they’re being made!
@@JamesLeung Thank you! :)
ok but where did you get the lovely sweater YOU are wearing?
It’s from wings of liberty 👍
Nice videos mate! One request - do a similar analysis video for Donald Glover's fashion in the series Mr & Mrs Smith :)
Thank you! I haven’t watched it yet but just taking a look on google his outfits look great!!
I haven’t watched the show, but this was great to watch.
Glad you liked it! I would highly recommend the show!
Good vid, each of the characters (talking about Logan Roy's adult children) added something different, Shiv and Roman seemed to be impeccably dressed all the time, while Kendall, certainly let his love for HipHop determine the way he dressed.
Thank you! When I started watching it I had no idea how much I’d be interested in their fashion choices. It’s fascinating!
I mean there's a point to buying expensive clothes if you care about the quality and durability of the piece, but it's dumb to buy just for the looks when you can find very similar pieces that are way less expensive.
I mean there is a limit in the quality of some of the pieces. No way is a T-shirt will ever be worth £600
Interesting video!
Thanks!
Hey James. Do you have a link for the sweater you’re wearing? Thanks
It’s from wings of liberty, called the veneto knit 👍
Great content.... which series have you referred to in this video?
The LP Cap is a Rolex cap. I don't know how they got one without the logo tho.
you should have mentioned the watch collection from the show
True! I’m not very clued up on watches so they sort of go over my head
Love the video. But heads up, there's a glitch at 6:41-6:47, and your audio cuts out at 11:32 onwards
Ahh dang, the video got copyright striked by HBO so I think they’ve basically ruined it by cutting pieces out 😢
Make a vídeo about tv series "the gentlemen'
This is exactly my style. 😉👍
Although I'm (almost) always buying them when seriously discounted. 🙃
My current girlfriend turned out to be from an old money noble family and her parents regularly complimenting me for my 'good taste and style'. 🤓
That’s the way to go!
What’s the sweater you’re wearing?
It’s from Wings Of Liberty, lovely piece
hello i was wondering if anyone knows where he got his gray sweater. Thanks
Wings of Liberty 👍
Old money? Quiet Luxury?
I thought all along the term is stealth wealth.
It’s for their safety and not to be ostentatious
Good observation 👍
How the heck did u find all of these?
Thankfully there are a lot of articles and Instagram posts that did the hard work - I won’t take credit for it!
Did the production crew actually use the real brand and clothes mentioned though? It would cost a lot, right? For something most people would not notice. Also, seeing how "plain" and "quiet" these outfits and clothes are, how are people able to identify the brand and piece?
Probably could just loan them. They loaned some of the expensive watches they are wearing.
There's Quiet Luxury and there is obvious luxury.
In some professions you have to look rich. Impressing people is part of the job. This is where MAD MEN beats SUCCESSION
All LP pieces are made in italy - including the hat
Thanks for letting me know. I couldn’t find that information anywhere on the website
This is almost every movie though
What’s the sweater you are wearing man? ;)
It’s from wings of liberty!
walmart t shirt is amazing
🙌
How long will influencers hammer the 'LOGOS ARE BAD' dogma?
“You can’t make a Tomlette without breaking some Gregs” - as we all know.
Hahaha best quote!
