Trudeau says war in Ukraine a “key” factor in high food prices

- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals accused Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of “flip-flopping” on his support for Ukraine during question period on Tuesday.
As Poilievre linked high food prices and the Trudeau government’s price on pollution, the Conservative leader tried to push Trudeau to support Bill C-234, which Poilievre said would carve out the price of pollution for farmers.
Trudeau and the Liberals turned their attention towards Ukraine, arguing Russia’s war was a “key” factor for high food prices in Canada.
Liberal Government House Leader Karina Gould said, “There’s only one party in this House that is flip-flopping and it’s the Conservatives with regards to its support for Ukraine."

If you can't afford rent, that's the provincial government's responsibility. I bet the province you live in has a conservative leader. As for food prices? Food prices are up all over the world because of international inflation. This government has brought inflation down this month, while forcing the CEOs of the grocery chains to come up with a plan to lower food prices, which they have already done.

It's 2 years of Ukraine war
Nobody is buying into the Conservative lies. They have zero history standing up for the working class - and a long history of serving elites on Bay Street over the working families on Main Street.
The NDP have successfully leveraged their position in this minority parliament to secure a "Confidence & Supply" agreement and force the government to get results for Canadians on the housing and affordability crisis which every nation is grappling with. These are results that never would have happened with conservatives in power.

More debt than all previous PMs in Canadian history combined.
Yes, because this government spends on investing into the country while having the lowest debt to GDP ratio in the G7, while the conservatives make cuts to all the supports that struggling Canadians need, while stuffing the pockets of the greedy rich. Tell me genius, what has the government been spending money on that hasn't been necessary?
Every nation on earth is dealing with the economic fallout from a pandemic, war in Europe, and the climate crisis. That said - Canada has the lowest inflation rate and the lowest debt to GDP rate in the G7. Things would only be worse if Conservatives had been in power the last 8 years. The last Conservative gov had the worst economic & jobs creation record of any CDN gov since WW2. They inherited a $12 billion surplus and turned it into a deficit in less than 2 years.

@@limricks5822food is half the price in Buffalo. We cross the border every weekend to save money and buy gasoline. Even with the exchange rate.
LOL what? We have the most fertile land in the world in the prairies (similar to Ukraine) and we produce a massive amount of grain. Only 0.5% of our international trade is with Ukraine + Russia combined. How naive do you have to be to believe that a war on the other half of the world is drastically effecting the prices of the food we grow here at home in our gigantic country? Why is Canadian-produced dairy, breads, eggs, meat etc. way more expensive than ever? Ukraine? This doesn't even make a tiny bit of sense.
If you were playing attention you would know that due to the war, Ukraine which is a leading grain exporter, has seen a dramatic drop in its exports. With food stocks so tight, there isn't a cushion to deal with a sudden drop in supply from Russia and Ukraine. The result is that in food prices are high and volatile. Wheat futures have jumped almost 60%.
Climate change is also affecting crop yields, something that Conservatives refuse to acknowledge. In 2021, drought & heat caused wheat yields across Canada to fall by 38.5%, with Saskatchewan crop yields plummeting by 43.4%. Canola had a 35.4% drop in production.
One of the biggest impacts of climate change has been the disruption of what scientists refer to as *"hydrologic stationarity."* Hydrologic stationarity refers to the relative stability of the hydrologic system. This is the stable system which *we've built our entire world civilization on.* Human caused Climate change (caused by too much fossil fuel CO2 emissions in the atmosphere) has resulted in a loss of hydrologic stationarity.
Let that sink in everyone!
Mass immigration and Liberal spending/inflation is the cause
@@garyhaggquist740 That's what I was referring to, we don't get our grain from either of those countries in the first place, so while other countries might be experiencing economic difficulties because of those circumstances, it has absolutely no effect on us. Another very important thing to point out is that we're still coming out of an ice-age, even if not a single human being existed on this planet the temperatures would be rising as they are now, and regardless of what we do that will continue to happen. With these facts in mind, the classic "climate change" and "Ukraine War" excuses are quite obviously that, excuses (and extremely poor, un-rational ones at that). Even before the pandemic, Trudeau had added over 100 billion dollars of debt onto Canada's tab (all other PMs combined tallied 600 billion in almost 150 years, dealing with WW1, The Spanish Influenza, The Great Depression, WW2 etc. and in comparison he spends 1/6th of that in a few years and all of our lives became worse from a socio-economic standpoint despite the unprecedentedly massive investment. Then he adds another casual 500 billion of debt, putting his debt at more than Canada's entire history before him, and houses cost 100% more, healthcare is garbage and vastly overflooded due to reckless population growth, and everything else is terribly expensive. I usually vote progressive (first NDP then Liberal, now Conservative) and I can't for the life of me understand why everyone's letting the liberals blatantly get away with so much open-faced crime.
Canada produces grain and livestock that are grown some distance from cities. It also produces some fruit and vegetables that may appear on grocery store shelves at the _end_ of a relatively short growing season. One bin out of ten bins of potatoes grown in Canada is available for two weeks each year, the remainder imported. You already know that year round produce does not come from Canada, including the summer months, as these take a season to reach maturity. Ninety-five percent of our groceries comes from or through the USA. Examine the labels in your cupboard. Locally grown food is neither fresher nor cheaper. These must be picked, collected, sorted, graded, inspected, transported, refrigerated, boxed, assembled and distributed in order to reach stores where they are unpacked and made ready for sale, that takes time and effort and often costs more than imported, as countries dump their surplus that is grown on cheap land in order to maintain price. Locally grown is often labeled _organic_ and offered at one and a half times the price of that of imported.
Beyond cereal grain and livestock that are grown out in the country, Canada relies on imports for its food products. In order to save farmland, forest land must be made cheaply available to the point where it results in a surplus of housing that brings down prices. Voters will not allow that to happen as they continue to tighten the snare on their own demise.
Constraining the supply of land for housing has caused the price of urban residential land to exceed $1500 per sq. ft. and farm land to exceed $20 per sq. ft. whereas it is not feasible to grow grain when the price of land exceeds $0.05 per sq. ft.
Canada has 895,000,000 acres of forest that is a fraction of its total territory. None may be spared for housing.

Zelenskyy's proxies Boris and Serhiy Shefir bought yachts, the total cost of which is estimated at $75 million. I am not certain that I agre with the idea that the farmers need to pay more so what they sell costs more. I see farmers getting screwed on both sides without the ability to recover costs. The main reason prices are high is mostly created in the supply chain after it leaves the farm. I really don't see how farmers manage to survive in these times.
The reality is 97% of the GHG emissions from farming operations are not subject to carbon pricing. Conservatives will never acknowledge the fact that climate change is already negatively affecting farmers and family budgets. That makes them totally unfit to lead!
