I used to drive tow truck and eves dropped on the cops with a scanner. I can assure you they take impaired drivers seriously and would be on a guy passed out at a light like flies on $%*t. It could have been the 911 call taker screwed up, (I have called in something and then listened to it get dispatched completely differently than I described it to the call taker) or maybe they had some sort of major incident that pulled police resources away from the area you were in and they had nobody in position to attend.
@@aidenschvatkok5732 the cop at the district office told me they were probably just having breakfast. it happened at 7:30 in the morning. Dude was just wasted.
There are multiple other factors, that got him out of it. He was not going over speed, and he said his wife was driving who was sober. Same time of night however, early night time they come back in thinking nobody else is out there without lights.
What an absolutely foolish and preventable accident this was. It’s so sad how one person’s stupidity can change so many lives. This accident was so preventable it’s unbelievable. I never understood why people are so reckless on the water. I see it all the time.
An absolute tragedy caused by someone who thinks of his speed boat, as a toy! A toy for HIS pleasure, with immature people, the thrill they get hearing the powerful engines is everything! Only a fool runs a boat at high speed after dusk, and definitely not after dark! Even a small boat with legal lighting is very difficult to see at any distance, you need to be concentrating and cautious. My heart goes out to the families who will never be the same, also to the people who came to help in the aftermath. If you see repeat offenders on the water, video them and report them, nobody needs to die in a boat collision!
The fishing boat was between 2 docks, it wasn't just sitting out in the middle of the lake with no lights... this guy made a habit of speeding through as close to the shore as he could because it's a speed boat that can turn on a dime and instead of going through the middle path of the lake he went close to the docks and smashed into the fishing boat the kids were partying on. Those kids were not at fault. people need to stop blaming them because they were having fun partying on a boat after dark.
How the hell are there not charges. If I was speeding on the 401, caused a crash that killed people, it’s vehicular manslaughter…why is he any different?
Criminal negligence causing death seems to be a charge that fits. Also I would suggest a lifetime ban on a license to operate a boat. Edit: I have not heard any official word on weather the fishing boat had lights or not. At 9:30 + at night it would be pretty dark. That may be a factor on charges being laid.
You can see the Port/Starboard lights on the fishing boat but obviously not the tail rear white light since the speedboat is on top. These lights are usually pretty unreliably as few people boat at night and therefore are not maintained often but again can't gaurentee anything. There was a rear light on the speed boat. Usually the rear light is removeable and it looks like it does have port and starboard lights so I would say that it is a safe assumption that the speedboat was lit and the fishing boat it is unclear whether it was lit. All that said, having boated close to 25 years, I would not feel comfortable hitting more than 30 km/h on a well lit full moon night, on a lake that I am very familiar with, let alone speedboat speeds.
Lights or not on the fishing boat, had the other boat been doing 10 km hour the impact of this would have not made the newsreel, people would have lived. Given his online post, past history and witness accounts he deserves to be locked up for life

WOW!!! THAT'S AS SAD AS IT GETS FOR THOSE FAMILIES. I know Bob's Lake. It's a beautiful place where friends of mine had a cottage. It's a serene landscape typical of Cottage Country in Rural Eastern Ontario. Speed Boats like the one in this tragic story have no place on a lake that size. Anyone who puts a boat like that in the water isn't going to abide by the speed limits or they would not own that type of boat. Why he didn't have proper lighting on the boat to prevent hitting something in the dark is a serious lack of awareness on his part. I feel terrible for the families who lost loved ones due to this accident waiting to happen. May they find peace in some way to help them through.
Unclear to me if the victims boat had its anchor light on......that is a factor. That said, it is tantamount to, if not criminal behaviour to operate a vessel at full speed in the dark. I hope this fellow is criminally charged and sued civilly by the families of the victims. Horrible tragedy.
You can be the reasonable one but when a drug drive drunk driver or a narcissistic driver rams into you, what do You Do? Terrible for the young people and their families.
DISGUSTING and other words I can't use on here. There is a bay speed limit to not cause a wake and shore erosion yet disregarded and no regard for the dark or that others may be on the lake.
Where I live, there are no speed limits on the lakes. At night you go very slowly because there are no headlights on most boats. One would think that the fishing boat had it’s running lights on. You really can’t be too careful on the water at night.
Comments here about about the fishing boat being an anchor (I've seen no such claim) or without lights (ditto), are interesting. People eager to defend the speeder. I can only assume they have the same mindset.
Not defending the speeder. The regulations apply to everyone. Lights are required after dark for a reason. It's not to prove a point, but to not get hit. Is it the speedboats fault, of course it is 100%.
Bob's lake is massive, this is just a bay in Bob's lake. The boat is not massive, it has an outboard ~225hp typical for most 18ft+ bass boats and speedboats of that size. There are dozens of these on every lake on every weekend in Ontario. The driver is to blame, not the boat/size/outboard.
10 mph limit. Yet to do the kind of damage he did means he was doing atleast 3x the limit. The neighbor said he heard him over the blasting music. Means he was WOT. Probably going 75mph thru a bay let.

i know in smaller towns the police sometimes take their time before charging someone, but this is getting silly. It's pretty clear which boat is on top of the other and who died.
This was the perfect storm of what's been going on on Bob's Lake for some time: people not following boating regulations, disregard for neighbors with loud music which likely obscured the approach of the speed boat, testosterone driven driving and I'm afraid that soon we'll hear about the lack of life jackets. The county and municipality needs to step up re regulations. Neighbors in the lake have seen this coming for a while as this gentleman points out. We all knew the sound of this speedboat, even across the lake in the wide basin.

even if someone did report this guy it's highly likely there was no follow up. I called in a driver so drunk he passed out cold at a red light ( I thought he had a medical emergency ), and the cops didn't even bother with it. No unit even called me back. No wonder people don't even report things.
Everyone thinks they can drive a fast boat. Not a chance on a closed coarse not public waterway at night. Charge this clown.
Ignorance knows no bounds.
Sounds like someone needs O'Leary's lawyer.
There are multiple other factors, that got him out of it. He was not going over speed, and he said his wife was driving who was sober. Same time of night however, early night time they come back in thinking nobody else is out there without lights.

Because I'm not an ignorant ahole.
That’s so terrible, my condolences to the family and friends of the injured and deceased.
That poor man who witnessed it. You can hear his pain and distress. I hope you find some peace ❤
How the hell are there not charges. If I was speeding on the 401, caused a crash that killed people, it’s vehicular manslaughter…why is he any different?
probably has money
i hear the local authorities are giving the perp TWO slaps on the wrist.
I live on a small lake. There are too many ah who think freedom means violating the freedom of others.
What kind of person puts his foot down in a speedboot...in the dark!!!!
He'll probably claim the brakes failed.
Y Wouldn't Ya ?
Lights or not on the fishing boat, had the other boat been doing 10 km hour the impact of this would have not made the newsreel, people would have lived. Given his online post, past history and witness accounts he deserves to be locked up for life
The prison in Kingston isn't far away from Bob's Lake, let us hope the guilty party sees the inside of it for many years as well as being bankrupted by lawsuits.

Canadian Collision Regulations.
"Rule 6 Safe Speed - International
Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions.
In determining a safe speed the following factors shall be among those taken into account:
(a)
By all vessels:
(i) the state of visibility,
(ii) the traffic density including concentrations of fishing vessels or any other vessels,
(iii) the manoeuvrability of the vessel with special reference to stopping distance and turning ability in the prevailing conditions,
(iv) at night the presence of background light such as from shore lights or from back scatter of her own lights,
(v) the state of wind, sea and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards,
(vi) the draught in relation to the available depth of water.
The crash occurred about an hour after sunset. (i.e.- low visibility)
It appears the speedboat failed to proceed at "safe speed" by definition.
This catastrophe should be the event that finally addresses boat licensing and consequences - heinous crime.
I was hit from behind while boating by a drunk boater who almost took my head off years ago. Alcohol is always a factor.
Wow how sad, what a nightmare for the family involved.
I hope they are in prison for a long time. It’s criminal negligence
That driver was a real jerk driving like that. Putting others lives at risk. Deplorable, reckless behaviour.
Boaters are like Harley Riders - over 50% have had at least 2 beers
DISGUSTING and other words I can't use on here. There is a bay speed limit to not cause a wake and shore erosion yet disregarded and no regard for the dark or that others may be on the lake.
Very disgusting
The owner of the speed boat will go to jail as he already posted his intentions of racing his boat in May, even though there was a 10 mph speed limit.
100 % and you know they all vote conservative, too.
Bang on brother!!
@@Rocksteady246 Nope, but i'd say you are, Bro!
Not defending the speeder. The regulations apply to everyone. Lights are required after dark for a reason. It's not to prove a point, but to not get hit. Is it the speedboats fault, of course it is 100%.
Why are boats of that size allowed on such a small lake?
@@mediaisevil6730 that comment is disgusting
Bob's lake is massive, this is just a bay in Bob's lake. The boat is not massive, it has an outboard ~225hp typical for most 18ft+ bass boats and speedboats of that size. There are dozens of these on every lake on every weekend in Ontario. The driver is to blame, not the boat/size/outboard.
it would be hard to find a boat any smaller
@@joez1589 if the boat he hit did not have lights on and he wasn't impaired then case closed. They don't confirm either.

What a disaster....waste of lives....if the guy continually broke the speed limit....why was this behaviour tolerated??
Should not be on plane after dark. Prayers for the families.
10 mph limit. Yet to do the kind of damage he did means he was doing atleast 3x the limit. The neighbor said he heard him over the blasting music. Means he was WOT. Probably going 75mph thru a bay let.

Why is the "on location" dude standing in front of a marina in Toronto? CKWS is owned by Global and has (a few) news staff in Kingston. "I'm standing near some boats somewhere because this is a story about boats..."
Notice how nobody got charged yet 3 people are dead and more injured. I wonder if it's a friend of the OPP or some high up rich dude (Like a Marco Muzzo type) that will never see any consequences?
Braebury homes.
That’s why we need speed limits on water why do we let boats go 70 on lakes slow them down I love bass fishing to but guess what that favorite spot going to be there when you get there
If you have a high speed capable boat. First and most important is to operate in a safe manner at all times. Second most important rule when you get on a boat always always wear a life vest. Under a seat or deck is no good.
Criminal negligence at the least.
Its not a good idea for either of those boats to be on the water in the dark.
Sincere condolences to the friends and families of the victims.
Incredibly sorry about your loss.
Correct me if im wrong , but is that a prop stuck into the bow of the speedboat?
So sorry there beautiful young woman and their friend had to die , I feel so sad for all the families and friends. On account of a speedfreak that could not wait for daytime and a clear view of what and who was in sight. Condolences to all loved ones of all

Breaks my heart❤🙏 what a senseless tragedy that never should’ve happened.
The picture of the owner is exactly how i would picture him. The tempo of their post also says alot about his character. How much will you bet that he will not take ownership of the crash and most likely blaim the victims for the cause of the crash. Should a tragic lost of life.
i know in smaller towns the police sometimes take their time before charging someone, but this is getting silly.
There you have it.
The same goes for motor bikes and cars.
the person driving that boat will be going to jail
The speed limit is 10 mph and this guy regularly brings his speedboat?
Entitlement and complete and utter disregard for safety and life
Like the kids drinking on a anchored boat in the dark without the proper white lights around the whole boat on like the law requires ? Anyone would hit them the way they were sitting
Is the windshield alive on the right side ?
aluminum boat could have been at anchor with no anchor light on.
Possible mitigation, but still no absolution.
Should be 3 life sentences for murder!
“The same boat, Wisin speeding before”. Number one it’s a speedboat and number two, speed is relevant. There is no speed limit, so how can he be speeding?
Why no charge yet...it doesnt take rocket science to determine who was at fault
