A backstabbing dick he may be, but at least Lautrec is decent enough in a fight, so I attributed his loss to bad luck or just the wrong strats.
Petrus on the other hand is just straight up BAD! You can tell this guy never gained his title of "Elite Cleric" through his achievements and prowess, but instead through his privileges and manipulations. A rotten liar, the likes of which made Patches hold a general grudge for all Clerics.

Not sure which is funnier; the fact that Havel literally stood still for a few seconds to give Pinwheel time to clone and then 2-shot him, or watching Big Hat Logan, Master Sorcerer, start beating Pinwheel with his staff.
It looks like he actually uses a scimitar as a secondary weapon. You can see him switch later on in his fight.

The problem with Pinwheel isn't that he's weak, it's that he's supposed to be a starting boss. But since he isn't easy to find and most people don't like going through skeletons, he becomes a somewhat mid game encounter where you're already buffed up and wont have a hard time with him.
@@elock1277 Not necessarily, I guess He's talking about the fact that in DS you can pretty much go anywhere from the start of the game. So with that fact in mind, Pinwheel would be one of the fist bosses you fight if you choose the catacombs at the start (but nobady would do that anymore because you would get stuck with the skelletons and then you would consult a guide). After that is tomb of the giants, and then the golden fog gate would tell the player "fuck off and get the lordvessel" so they get back on track for the bells.
@@elock1277 it supposed the play should down to the catacombs before or after kill the ares demon because when you come back in that time to the firelink sanctuary is when come the partners of petrus a talks about go down and another characters talks about that place.
I probably would've stuck with the plan of doing catacombs first if a holy weapon was an easier thing to get at the start. Since it's not it kinda makes it a temporary no-go area (at least for a player like me who doesn't like to run past things that could sneak up on her later, preferring to wipe stuff out as I go). So yeah the boss difficulty level seems misjudged with the completion method availability for the area. One's tuned to early-game, the other's tuned to early-mid.
@@Torthrodhel thought the same, it's pretty obvious once you enter the catacombs you're not supposed to be there, kinda like when you get to the ghosts in the flooded area. They should have put a holy weapon at the end of the graveyard and put the zweihander somewhere else. Honestly I think the area is easier than the typical beginning route, it's just that the skeletons become overwhelming early game because it takes so long to kill them.
The Catacombs are roughly stat lined to be in league with the Depths, and the first part of Darkroot. Which makes sense as you get the Divine Ember after Moonlight Butterfly. Presumably the "Intended" path is to either hit them before going down to Blightown or after coming back up from it seeing as you meet Rhea and get the Rite of Kindling hinted to you after beating Capra Demon if you don't head straight down.

I was disappointed by lack of Sieglinde in this video.
Ironically, it's mostly because Siegmeyer is so reckless. The ones that cautiously stalk around or take a long time to attack get wrecked.
Even a very confused dog with a sword can smack Pinwheel. I think Petrus may have forgotten that the strength of your miracles relies on your faith.
Mildred took less damage from Pinwheel than Havel. She has some serious fire resistance, even though she has no armor
Sort of makes sense, as she was designed to be the NPC summon help for Quelaag, who vomits fire on the regular. It's how Mildred doesn't die in two seconds every time Quelaag spits lava on the ground, naked though Mildred may be. She's got flash sweat on at all times. :-p

Out of all the NPCs, Patches is the one who gets the Mask of the Father drop. True daddy material.
He was the only one that looted pinwheel at all lol.
Honestly, seeing Petrus perform so badly compared to his peers just adds new layers to make his character despisable.
He may _supposedly_ be the veteran of the Thorolund Cleric Knights, the "Elite Cleric" evidenced even by his armor.
And yet, the fact that he is so much weaker then "rookies" such as Vince and Nico to me suggests that he did not achieve his Rank through his own merits, but instead through his "connections" and "privileges" that he used to have before turning Undead.
In other words, he lied, manipulated and backstabbed his way into his position as an Elite Thoeolund Cleric.
And when you meet him for the fisrt time, his manner of speech could EASILY convince you he's a wise veteran of his art.
DAMN, it most certainly are "Clerics" such as *this guy* that made Patches develop the murderous grudge he has now.
A damn shame, because unlike Petrus, the young Clerics Vince and Nico were honestly good people, if a little misguided by the teachings they grew up with. They didn't deserve the trap Patches set up for them!
And yet I can't blame Patches if he had mistaken them for the same "lying, rotten Clerics" that folks like Petrus are. If in the past he was devastatingly wronged by "Clerics" such as Petrus, I can understand him developing a negative bias for all Clerics in general. (though I don't agree with it)
There's a bit more environmental storytelling to Petrus. That talisman he's using? It doesn't scale with faith, so it's usually used by people who don't have much of it. Also, you find a regular talisman and morning star down the elevator shaft. I think the leading theory is that Petrus killed the real elite cleric, took his clothes, and shoved his body down the shaft.

But it lowkey makes sense. If Rhea, Vince and Nico did _not_ depart for Lordran together with Petrus and were instead meant to redenvouz with an Elite Cleric Knight, then this theory has a lot of credence to it!
Maybe Petrus was also originally from Thorolund, but not a Cleric at all and he somehow managed to assassinate the Elite Cleric Knight that was supposed to meet up with Rhea's party.
Personally, I still like to think he is a corrupt Cleric from the beginning, since I think that gives more layers of complexity to the entire Way of White church.
While there would be honest souls trully blindly believing in their faith, there would also be those in power who'd secretly use their authority for their own ends. That's a nice theme that I think fits well within this universe, considering how Dark Souls in general is heavily inspired by Berserk. (where many supposedly "righteous" authorities were in fact rotten to the core)
But I will admit that this theory you presented is very cool too! In fact, if I were to discard my personal preference, this would easily be my second pick right off the bat! I wouldn't know how to explain the Talisman and Morning Star hidden away in that chest otherwise! (though that could've also belonged to a prieviously failed Thorolund Cleric, who also embarked on an ill-fated quest for the Catacombs)
Personally don't buy the "murder-and-replace" theory for Petrus, there's no real reason for the imposter to act as Petrus, it's not lucrative or anything like Licia in Dark Souls 2, and he DOES know miracles. (Also if From wanted to push that narrative, I think they'd have a thief's set in one of the chests or a skeleton among the chests)
Pretty sure he's just a corrupt 'cleric' who found himself cursed and sent out on a death sentence of a pilgrimage, and suddenly all his connections didn't matter any more once he had the Darksign. The loot seems more like just backup supplies, things he's hoarded or brought along with him to Anor Londo. The red orbs showing he's not above pillaging Humanity to keep himself away from Hollowing, after all there's little else keeping him from Hollowing any more...

I still do like the "fake Cleric" concept as a side theory, but for the most part, I agree that the "corrupt Cleric" makes far more sense in light of what you've said. It's also the one I personally hold as my favourite.

I'd like to think that FromSoft purposely made every single NPC that has canonically gotten to the Tomb of the Giants have enough power to kill Pinwheel both gameplay wise and lore wise.

I love how Lautrec literally just walks away from Pinwheel thinking he is not worth his time. And then all the clones spawn and he dies.

I think Lautrec was robbed of this victory. Watching the health bar I realized that some of the NPCs had their summon's stats while others had their regular stats. Prime example of this would be Solaire of Astora, who took nearly no damage from Pinwheel, despite his health and armor being comparable to Lautrec's, suggesting that he was actually a white summon. Lautrec is also summonable and I'm pretty confident that if he had the same stats as his summon for Gaping Dragon fight he would've won with ease.

I love doing pyromancer builds in Dark Souls (not just Dark Souls 1, but all three Dark Souls games). I think Pyro builds are the most fun in Dark Souls 2, but arguably the most powerful in Dark Souls 1. Pyros can be fun in Dark Souls 3 but sadly they're never super powerful from my experiences. Pyromancy scales with int and faith in Dark Soul 2 and Dark Souls 3, and they can do a lot of damage with +10 pyro glove and 30 int & 30 faith in Dark Souls 2, but I feel like pyromancy scales in damage a lot slower in Dark Souls 3. Everyone seems to think you need 60 int and faith for pyro builds to do a lot of damage in Dark Souls 3. For casters of any kind in Dark Souls 3 (clerics, sorcerers, hexers even though hexes barely exist in DaS3, and pyros) it seems like people will aim for 60 (int, faith, or both int and faith).

This is kind of random and about a Elder Scrolls game but your comment made me think of how in Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind there's a npc trainer who you have to use the "Calm" spell on in order to talk to him and have him train you in Enchanting (a skill to enchant stuff gear and weapons with magical effects). Imagine if in a Dark Souls game there were npc's that you had to trick into helping you, or you had to defeat them once in combat before being able to have them help you out.

I love how Pinwheel is one of the easiest bosses in the game and Petrus barely dented his health, even though Petrus hit Pinwheel like eight times.

@@moradan81 The thing is, they probably would. You have to remember that Lautrec is meant to challenge the player in a 3 on 1 fight, so his AI aggressiveness seems to be toned down a lot. My guess is that he was strong enough that trying to fight him early on is still hard, and that by the time you would crush him, he has killed the FK and fled, so you have to fight him 1 on 3.
Because if you try attacking him in Firelink, you'll notice he's no where near as aggro as the crestfallen warrior
Lautrec's AI is so defensive, he tries to dodge any _action,_ not even attacks; if Pinwheel is jumping, flying, summoning, Lautrec is trying to "dodge" those things instead of attacking, no wonder he lost
I've never played a Dark Souls game, so I don't really recognise any of the NPCs, but I LOVE that not only did Petrus fail, but a wolf did better than he could.

I remember my first playthrough. My roommate, and personal Dark Souls coach at the time, watching on the couch. I dropped into the arena, and panicked when I realized it was a boss. before I could really react though I had killed him and my roommate just laughed at my confusion.
Man, Griggs just about got one-shot here. Sucks to be him.

So what you want to do is take the elevetor to the church, don't worry someone is bound to activate it any day now, run pass the hollows, don't worry you are faster than them, and go to the blacksmithe. Ask for the Chrest of Artorias and go back to Firelink. DON'T go to Andre's basement, there is a Titanite Demon there it will murder you. Once back in Firelink, take the lift and go to the valley of the drakes. Ignore the treasure in front of the dead dragon and it'll leave you alone. Now, stick right and go up a cave, keep going higher until you reach a cross road. Turn right. Continue on the path until you reach a big stone wall. There might be a few angry bushes on the way but they aren't a match for you. Use the Chrest to open the door and you are in the hunter's forest.
It's cool to see that all of the NPCs that make it past Pinwheel (and into the Tomb of Giants) are actually capable of doing so. Petrus not being able to kill Pinwheel is interesting, as he's clearly the weakest of the Thorolund Clerics and even abandons them. A rare Ludonarratively consistent moment where Petrus's betrayal and cowardice is tied to his objective status as the weakest link.
Man, this was super entertaining... Had a good mix of close calls and total stomps for both sides. Shiva losing shocked me the most tbh
No wonder Lautrec kills the only cripple in town when he can't kill Pinwheel.
