Last year at landstar I paid 600.00 in fees just to get my money. I'm no longer at landstar. I found a way to haul the same load and make more money and no fees to get my money.
One of the most informative UA-cam pages for revenue and expenses for trucking. The value here is very high.
1.73 after Landstar takes their cut is 1.03. rule of thumb look at the load and the rate and take 70 cents off. That's what you're running for. An old timer there taught me that. Quick math so you don't waste time
I was with Landstar for 6 years. I will say that they will nickel and dime you to death. I left because I retired for medical reasons and sold my truck. Good luck with leasing to Landstar.
Nickel and dime you to death? I understand each of my deductions where there are only 4 (5 with insurance) deduction lines. You must've owed them money or something not normal.
Your first month is very similar to mine. My truck broke down on my way to orientation, so I missed that week. Then my truck was in the shop for another week after orientation. Then a family emergency took another week. I worked one week and was very much in the hole for the first month.
Hang in there, buddy, just keep plugging away. That’s all you can do.. stay safe out there and keep us posted
Finally no BS from trucker
Tyvm. Bro and God Bless love the show tks
As a carrier I'm definitely following.
Thanks for sharing this info. Appreciate you
West of I 35 is a tough market. Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are usually pretty steady to pull out of. Find a rail freight hub near you, and you'll do well pulling out of that city or nearby. Also, concentrate on direct shipper loads only. They pay much better. Find an agent to dispatch you. You'll learn freight lanes that way.
Been with landstar going on 6 years… i feel your pain… its slow right now. Fortunately, my wife and i run teams, and we have dedicated lanes. Took about 6 months to get in good with direct agents. Most good loads don’t even hit the load board. Our average rpm is 4.15. Good luck. Hope it works out for you.
FCWP I believe is your worker comp plan, I have mine through an outside insurer. The LCN is your load alert charge & the Trk Scan is from sending in your paperwork. Every time you send a load in they charge $2.00. The Omitrac charge is for you buying the unit. Once it’s paid for, somewhere around $800 I believe that charge will disappear.
Thank you for this info, hope the next weeks start looking better, the fuel consumption so high must’ve been the sensor that was bad
That's some good breakdown numbers. No BS > I can;t wait for week 2 and 3 and 4.
I doubt Landstar will look kindly at your truthful analysis. Good luck with that.
Who cares what Landstar thinks. He owns his truck. He doesn't work FOR Landstar
Those Landstar charges are wild!
I think you'd be better off in the Midwest you'll have more negotiation room. I do avoid the west. Great content. Good luck at land star!
When I was with knight and the company I’m with now I’ll always do the 93 over the 17. You save on fuel and time as well
Alright. I’ve watched you suffer enough. I don’t usually tell people what they need to do, but you need to move on to flat bedding. Dry van & reefer are dead markets, too many people pull that freight especially all the foreigners. Landstar has decent flatbed, oversized and I believe heavy haul loads. They have a securment class (I believe in Texas) they offer to get you prepared, I would take advantage of it. From there you can progress to more specialized freight.
I’ve never pulled for Landstar, but I’m a leased on O/O and do well with that and I’ve had peaks at their loadboard. If you want to do well consistently you need to move on or your weeks will be hit or miss.
Wish you all the best ✌️
He already has the overalls. He's posing like a flat better. Wearing those overalls, he needs to pull the flat bed to justify the overalls.
I may do that in the future... Seeing what dry van has to offer for the moment.
He’ll do just fine once he finds the lanes that works for him and builds relationships.
Most people can’t justify the labor in flatbed and unless you have a covered wagon or conestoga then your lifting 100 lb tarps. I had 7 years sidekit covered wagon and breathed in a lot of steel dust so that is a factor too.
Personally I wouldn't touch scamstar with a ten foot pole.
Also, if you think about how much all this would be on your own it would be wayyyy more. Plus they do the maintenance on the trailer and you get the discounts
You shouldn’t be making less than a company driver when you have the responsibility of maintaining your own truck. I’m not going to pollute my sector by saying too much, but I’m making 80/mi as a company driver with tanker/hazmat endorsements. That includes deadhead and the miles are point to point, not zip to zip.
Idk how people run for landstar, they charge a fortune. Seems pointless.
3k for fuel sounds like a lot with the little you ran. Does Landstar put your fuel surcharge into your fuel card?
You seem a little frustrated. Hope it starts turning around for you soon
This is a really discouraging video. But I agree with what someone else said about opening up the Dead Head miles. I've seen a few videos about it and that's what the people getting the best paying loads seem to do. Can you do a video showing the load board for flatbed? Would love to see videos like that more showing what people actually have to choose from.
I can probably do that... Some people have been asking. Ill try to integrate something in next episode.
Great videos! Do you stand on top of your mattress and record these videos?
Landstar needs a LOT of improvement. Spent 5 years there and the percentage needs to be adjusted. Difficult to be successful without having direct freight. The load board is full of the same posts by foreign agents. Agents never get punished for misinformation but the driver gets a load cancelled and rarely get reimbursed TONU. Too much micromanaging. I can see why there is an AB5 law. You’re almost on an employee basis. They can cut your fuel card which is insane or put you on hold and you get NO loads. Call in and you will be on hold forever for almost any dept. We were blessed to find a customer we pulled for, got our own authority and run the freight with none of the BS. We spent HOURS on the load board calling about loads that were mostly ‘covered’ or they would post a rate and tell you it was less when you called. Good luck to you, find some direct freight with an agent and hopefully a good lane ☀️
Landstar cut seems high, my recommendation is to try to find a good agent and stick to it because most agents undercut the load rate by almost half.
they can't undercut the rate when you know how much a load needs to pay based on miles, takes experience to know.
Maybe you answered this in another video, did you complete a lease purchase at knight and move the truck over to landstar? Or are you leasing another truck with landstar?
Completed the Knight Lease by purchasing the vehicle early. Then moved to Landstar. I own my vehicle now.
$2 charge is when you scan in your paperwork
I’d stay out of California fuel is crazy expensive
I dont understand how they could tell you rates could not be negotiable..landstar is a logistics company that uses agents or brokers whatever you want to call them to sell there loads to you or contractors of transportation companies. THEY ARE NEGOTIABLE .. the company i work for is an authorized carrier for landstar and i can tell you for a fact they negotiate..if you cant negotiate than you might as well consider yourself a company drive that just choose your own loads and time off..next i think. You need to build relationships with agents to get good loads before they hit the load board like an o/o would with its own shipper and maybe yes maybe then use a load board to get home or back to a customers shipment
You can't negotiate crap with a 1 truck fleet. You have no pull. Bigger guys can negotiate because they have man power / network to decrease their expenses.
Utah, Nevada, Colorado... basically anything west of I35 is trash
Another way to look at it is, find your daily amount you need per day. Then rate won’t matter as much if you can average out to above the dollar amount you need per day. I know blue ribbon at landstar likes to get a load everyday. They’re averaging close to 8k a week in revenue. Just an idea
@@412hwc they are transparent as can be lol what do you mean sketchy?
@@ThatOneGuy-hp2pb lol what i was sayin! i dont listen to them dudes for none.
So you waiting till the day of to find loads is a mistake. Need to be pre-booking loads. You in the wrong lanes. Midwest is where you need to stay. Stack your week with some buffer in between. Will stop you from taking low rate loads. If you don’t understand the fees need to talk to your payroll rep so you understand. Also, do you know your CPM cost to operate? Also, learn to do your own maintenance, will save you a lot in the long run.
I installed both nox sensors on my truck in 2 hours. It's very easy. Parts cost me $1100
I have a question...of you find your own loads with your own brokers does that work?
Not sure... I think you would have to get in touch with Land star and be registered to book your own loads on the board.
hey theres a dude bro who live in las cruces new mexico n he runs landstar n west coast only. he makin it work with a damn sfi payment so if he can do it! u deff can. he has a youtube.
He never show his number though…so we really don’t know what he is making…you talking about G Dawg
@@dukeduke7569 yea, buuuuut bro, this how i look at it. dude payin sfi 1200 a week off tha rip plus what ever fees landstar takin....he aint hang it up yet...sooo he gotta b doin alright, also i dnt think dude droped a video in a while but stretchin miles with stretch or sumn another dude who has an sfi trucc n he been with landstar a long while.
35 % is the deal breaker.
No offense but I think you’re planning the wrong loads..
book pick today deliver tomorrow 600 or less miles. Midwest to east coast then back..
enjoy your videos looking forward to see how landstar works out for you
You will not always get the pretty good loads. It's what you do with the ugly ones. Your right foot will help with your profit. I would also look at weight lighter loads pay better. Stay safe.
You are a lease operator at Landstar not an owner operator. The word owner or the word lease does not refer to the truck. It refers to the authority…..
How come week 2 and 3 both have exactly the same fuel cost of $1505.16
Oops... That is not right and would explain why my fuel costs were so high. Will fix next episode.
@@truckingthesevenseas I, also, noticed the cost of the APU wasn't added to the total. K59 + K60
Ya you known I did catch that after you mentioned the fuel costs and fixed it as well. I had to really peice these settlements together so it was a little confusing and rough... Usually I don't make mistakes this badly.
Don't run the truck when sleeping to save fuel
I couldn't put myself through that. U should be able to negotiate. Im not pulling for to much more but damn. Its not worth it. I have a rule of thumb. Minimum 2.50 a mile.
Get your own MC# and safe that 35% you on the road anyway 😂
also south east and texas are terrible. stay tn and north and east of 35 and west of like 81 at tha mac u shud win
@@Quinten4M yea but thats a one off thing. super ego is across tha board bad. landstar isnt. u jus need to carve out ya lane n make it good with certain agents. time really helps drivers at landstar if they can maintain
One thing I’d say, is you need to understand the lanes better. Talking about not taking loads becomes you would be in trash areas. Not true some of those loads would have got you close enough to really good load areas and worth the small DH miles. JMO
Here’s a mistake I see, you’re limiting your search area too small, open up the dead head range
Pro tip is if when you open up the range to 500 miles in the northwest, you deadhead to Cali very slowly, get your 10 mpg at 62, and then grab a $3.50-5/mile load. You’ll get the system as you go but that’s what I do every time in those states.
Not a bad idea however SLC is so far from any other major city i don't think i would have made much a difference....
wow... low miles and 35% cut is a lot!!. Can't you better go with a personal dispatcher, may charge you like 17%?
35% Seems a little steep.
Rates have been to low for to long for 35%.
35% is way too steep, I didn’t know Landstar took that much, I’m retired now but I thought the norm used to be 15-20% for most carriers that owner operators leased to. Also why do they charge you for Omnitrac and EOBR? Is that not the same thing?
Did you say 1.35 before Landstars cut WHAAAAAAAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME
Dude i don't even know how you survive those are horrible numbers.
Scam Star before even watching I know they are crooks
Bro please leave!! 35% is insane!! At my company i only deduction is 349 a month for insurance. I'm at 146k for the year so far and did 367k last year with 2 months of downtime! Please leave
You running loads for free🤣🤣🤣🤣...you won't be in business long
Not just him, no one is making money.
Too many trucks chasing too little freight!
@@saintlex32 its a zero sum game in trucking.
If soneone wins then someone loses.
There is no team work in that!
@@TOdoubledizzle24 oh I hear that.. my response was directed at @845_NYGORILLA
I saw the video wen he left knight. He sead he was on duty 142 days in a year .but had 52 weeks of pay.so how did he do this.well 142days is not even 6 months.he wasn't making any money.well I lease a truck at knight for 5 years .retired may 2020 with 35 years over the road and 3.8 million miles. My pay was from $2100 to $ 2600 a week.snd staid out 4 weeks. Home for 2 days then back again. I don't know what's going on out thete but don't look like he puts enough time in on the road
Bro straight up no BS like other truck bloggers 😂
