I wish it was still that way... Because my wifi sucks, I have to watch this at 240p to get this video to run smoothly. 500kb per second is something that really bites you in the ass. If you have 10MB per second, at least you can play games online you lucky sonny jims.
To be honest they took the idea of cutting off the lights, spawning enemies in etc. directly from the original doom. It was scary shit back then and they tried to recapture the same effect.
TheLeninistPlaysGames I don't remember lights cutting out in the original Doom and spawning enemies only became commonplace in Episode 4 and certain maps in Doom 2.
Second and third levels alrealdy shows lights cutting out. And that continue for the rest of the game. And the original game was the first game to introduce this kind of dynamic.
8:59 I hate how that's become an obsolete thing now. All people care about nowadays is multiplayer, multiplayer, multiplayer. Nobody can just sit down and play a good game anymore.
Well multiplayer does not mean bad game and a singleplayer does not mean good game. Dont get me wrong a great campaign will always have a place in my heart but nothing can beat playing multiplayer together with friends and fucking around.
Alex Howard Oh my god you're so right! I hate how people skip epic games or bring down scores simply for muh multiplayer. So when companies try and add multiplayer half assed get shit on anyways. Spec ops the line as a perfect example. I love sp games! You can relax and play at your place rather then being yelled at for being a noob scrub draging everybody down because I had an itch I couldn't scratch lol
sobekflakmonkey I disagree. It's a pretty terrible game and definitely not Doom. The only thing that holds up is the lighting. The mechanics, storytelling, acting, enemy design, level design and pace of game all don't hold up. There are other FPSs that came out around that time that are infinitely better. I understand that people have different tastes in video games, but I really want people to hate this game and throw it back to hell from which it came.
striderpsv I really like this game... Played again recently, and really liked playing it again... In my opinion its alot better than alot of the junk, coming out these days. That said, it doesn't hold a candle, compared with 1 and 2. And yes, off course HL2 is better, but Doom 3 is stil a great game imo, and one of the last of its kind, from a bygone era. I respect your opinion though, and granted it does have some problems, some of which you mentioned.
striderpsv It's not a pretty terrible game lol. Agree that it is not like doom in its arcade shooter core, but maybe doom 1 was supposed to have this vibe before romero changed the whole concept of it. I honestly can enjoy both games.
The game is good. Yes, very different from the clasic Doom that I grew up with, but still a good game. Different does not (and should not) mean "bad". Some noobs say it's just a tech demo - but this is hard to believe when you see all the effort that went into the artwork and level design. And the sound, especially the ambience, is absolutely amazing! The story is pretty decent too, even if it seems stereotypical. The scientific bits (EPD & Hydrocon especially) sound pretty plausible, actually. A lot more realistic than the "Argent plasma" science of Doom 2016.
How exactly is Wolfenstein 3D a tech demo? For one it's the evolution of technology that had already been released by id as far back as 1990 with Hovertank and Catacomb 3D. Tech demo? Wolf 3D? What?
@Old Liquid To be fair the fact that it has pistons doesn't necessarily mean that it's a combustion engine. Could be something like a compressor for example.
If you thought that was bad, there's a show about Pac-Man called Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures or something, where the main villain is a ghost that let out all of the other ghosts to wreak havoc. What's the villains name? Betrayus. His name is Betrayus.
Dr. Betruger was a decent guy, until the teleportation projects, they didn't know they opened a portal to hell, so Betruger went into the portal by himself. and after returning, he completely changed.
As a massive Doom fan I still enjoy this game and definitely agree with this review as a whole. One thing I will suggest to those who are going to play it to download the Trent Reznor sound pack for the game, it makes the monsters and most of the weapon sounds pack more of a punch.
Seriously, the gun sounds in that pack blow the default sounds by default. The pistol actually sounds like it is making damage for once! :P But it is also cool to hear Trent's whispers in it which admittedly sounds much creepier than some of the default sounds.
@@stonetic2515 Most games use dynamic/life time and baked lighting, the difference is that games now don't showcase it as a main selling point in graphics. Especially now that ray-tracing is becoming a norm. Shadows now are more subtle and realistic, where as Doom 3 uses hard dynamic shadows. Doom 3 pushed graphics in this direction.
The only thing that ever truly bothered me about Doom 3 was the goddamn reaction to damage. Especially from the former humans. The way your camera bounces around like a spazz really made some of the combat annoying.
OpenMawProductions For me It was the lackluster firepower, nothing seems to pack a punch wich Is a shame. When I shoot someone In the face I expect something more than a Hurrr.Give me a twitch or something, feels like I'm shooting rubber bullet xD.Beside that I like the game though.
@@pacivalmuller9333 2022, nearly 2023 and it still holds up son. Hopefully The Callisto Protocol can bring the sci-fi horror back in a way that makes sense. If it fails, the it's over!
Before Crysis, HL 2 and Doom 3 were an FPS game that have mind blowing physic, graphic, texture, level design and story that melted PC system in 6th generation gaming
My dad's PC couldn't handle it, so we had to turn off bumpmaps and run it at basically the lowest settings. Which of course made the game look like complete ass, but i had fun with it anyway lol
I always assumed Betruger was possessed by Satan himself. Ian McCormick, the teleporter technician you meet says that Betruger ventured into the portal and came back changed. Betruger refers to the demons as "his children" and the army invading Mars as "his legion". He taunts you throughout the game about how "Your soul will be mine" and that "Your friends are all with me". When you go to hell, a different voice taunts you throughout and refers to Hell as "my domain", presembly this is the entity that possessed Betruger. and it would make sense to be Satan. In the BFG edition, when we enter hell the loading screen says "The time of his wrath has come", which would indicate Satan does indeed exist in this universe.
i remember when my dad came home with an Xbox one day and it was a modded one so you could burn games onto it and i was absolutely baffled with how many games were on it. I remember one evening my dad started playing DOOM 3 and I was scared shitless because I saw nothing like it before. i tryed playing it myself and got too scared to go on. fun times, I miss the 6th gen
You are by far my favorite reviewer and I'm glad I found you. No bullshit, purely objective reviews, you're legitimately a good gamer, and your reviews are succinct and professional in style. Plus I have similar taste in games. Frankly, your reviews are the most high quality I've seen on youtube.
I'd like to add in a few more channels. *Super Bunnyhop* *MrBTongue* *Game Maker's Toolkit* They are not review channels per-se, but the quality of their videos is amazing.
Played the game for 7 hours now and I can say your review is spot on. Lots of shortcomings and annoyances, but shooting is solid, lightning is impressive, and I'm really impressed by all the lore you can discover, wether through reading pda's or watching a company promotional video. All in all deserves to be mentioned as one of the games that made 2004/2005 in pc gaming such a legendary time.
It was released in 2003 along with the first call of duty, far cry and half life2. Basically making it part of the greatest year for fps ever( except for 2007)
Doom 3 is up until this very day the scariest video gaming experience I've had. Oh the hours I spent huddled in corners in complete darkness feeling desperately alone, forever seeking a beacon of hope, a friendly face or a shimmer of light.
DooM3 is actually a reimagining of the original DOOM. DOOM 64 is actually the REAL sequel to DOOM II: Hell on Earth. It is widely theorized that the Doom Slayer/Marine of the new DOOM is actually DoomGuy from the original 2 & 64, solely due to the ending where DoomGuy chooses to stay in Hell to prevent demons from ever breaking free again.
Nah, he's not, he's from some ancient world that fought hell for a long time and in the last level you can learn that he betrayed his own race to get his son back from the dead, but hell tricked him and he just went apeshit and became the Doom Slayer, also it's mentioned that he used swords, statues of other warriors of his race also appear with swords so he most likely never used a gun before the events of his game, even his armor was made in hell irrc so he has like no conenction to the old games...also I'm pretty sure devs said that the game is a total reboot.
The wiki says that Doom 3 was a prequel. imo Doom 2 looked like an expansion pack rather than a sequel, it's the same. but still Hell on Earth was way more fun than the first one.
Mr. Doggy Meaty pretty sure doom 3 was just a remake of doom 1, not a prequel to anything since the next doom game ignored it, couldn't really be a prequel to doom 2 as well since hell didn't invade earth and you compleatly cleared mars of all traces of hell in the expansion
Eh, no, Doom 2 was larger than the first Doom (at the time of release), so it can't be an expansion. It had enough new stuff to be a new game in itso wn right :) Doom 3 is a separate storyline, unrelated to D1 and D2. But D1, D2, D64 and D2016 can be connected into a single story, with a few retcons here and there.
AlexeiVoronin Doom 2016's storyline was also separated from the originals, since it's a reboot. and also, some people said that it might be a sequel to D64, but it was confirmed that it was just a reference.
Gordonkris That's right. But I like the lighting in DOOM 3. Even though I'm not a fan of this game I can accept that it's a great engine. Is it better than hl2? No. Was it comparable to the source engine? Yes. The characters looked like wax mannequin with wonky animations but it had great lightning effects. Compare DOOM 3 with Half Life 2 before the engine update. Half Life 2 is realistic with great faces animations, open environments kinda shitty lightning effects (even though it did it's job). When DOOM 3 had crappy faces animations, closed environments with fantastic shadows. It's kinda hard explaining the impact of this game. The impact was as huge than half life 2 at the time but it left a smaller mark than half life 2. Get my meaning here?
Superschokokeks I've played through Doom 3 about 3 times now, 2 times on nightmare mode. The Trites are even more terrifying then because they will melt your base 25 health in seconds.
I really loved what they went for. A more tense survival horror-style game was a great idea, but the combat just didn't feel or sound right. The weakness of the shotgun was disappointing as well. Making a heavy metal, over the top action game I don't think would have worked though, as times have really changed a lot. It's still a great game, it just had too big of shoes to fill.
Shotgun felt weak because it had ridiculously wide spread. However, shotgun is one of the most powerful weapons in the game if you use it at point-blank range. Some mods reduce spread of shotgun pellets, but I wouldn't recommend them because it makes the gun extremely owerpowered at close range, capable of blowing away most weaker enemies in one shot.
Doom 3 game is the best game that I have ever played...... It is better than Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal...........Because it is more challenging and story-oriented........And still feel goosebumps........
what I absolutely loved about Doom3 is the story behind (in?) all the PDAs you find and the sound design (except for the glitch-like ERGH sound you make when hit), especially how most areas within a level had their own sound environment - I even had to look for a "calmer" corner to be sure I'm safe in there and read the PDA stuff. Overall, the atmosphere in Doom3 is at par with STALKER (for me) in terms of depth, consistency (yet variety: shoot - explore - read - shoot ...) and build-up towards the game end.
having played this game on release, I wasn't overly engrossed in it. It didn't help that it was competing with the complete surprise release of Far Cry. I got this game on Steam last week and have to say that after years of mediocre shooters that left me wanting, the game play here really stands up as far as a basic, balls to the wall shooter. The graphics may have aged but the game play is still top notch. I do agree about the cheap shots though. It is annoying being trapped to take damage you have no way of avoiding. There are some minor irritating quirks, even down to the lack of lighting, but this time around I accepted these as parts as the environment and game play dynamics and ended up really enjoying the game for it. Definitely recommend if you are like me and just want a shooter with no dull resource management or character levelling etc. Its a simple old school shooter through and through
+MaTtRoSiTy I find it a shame that shooters like these or Half Life 2 have fallen so much out of favor with the gaming audience. Last few FPS games I played I in general enjoyed were often six or ten years old.
TheDutchGhost yea I think developers are trying to get too clever with games these days but for me it's come full circle, after tiring of simple shooters, I find myself wanting more of them. It's also the fact I really don't have the time to commit to 100+ hours of gameplay with complex character development etc... I've been playing a lot of older games too...including HL2. I'm hoping the new Doom sticks to the old format of FPS games. Though it has quite a lot to live up to...
MaTtRoSiTy New Doom does seem to have picked up some modern influences which I sometimes find a little disappointing like the execution moves. Entertaining at first certainly but then it might become tiresome, especially if it is needed it to kill enemies. I am a little divided between simple pure shooters and more complex story driven shooters which I still enjoy a lot. What I find rather frustrating about the last is how console influence they have become such as smaller linear levels with little to no alternative paths, or how cinematic developers try their games to be, forcing the player to go through certain scenes or not able to continue unless you have spoken to people or performed certain actions. Again I like stories but not when it is to much forced on you, the same for cutscenes such as those for actions that are often repeated. (unlocking a door, welding open a door or closing one, or defeating an enemy with a QTE) I am also saddened that science fiction settings have fallen out of favor. Horror/supernatural has also been pretty much reduced to zombies. (I am BTW sick of zombies as antagonists)
TheDutchGhost yea don't get me wrong, I like a decent story too (HL2 comes to mind), but the gameplay is really what I'm into. The console-centric design of games in the last few years is very disappointing for PC users - I guess PC exclusives are going to become a thing of the past... I'm hoping Doom doesn't use too many gimmicks too. Though I think they will be aware that their fans are likely to be somewhat old school in their tastes, so hopefully the game reflects that!
MaTtRoSiTy I can understand why gameplay is higher for you at the moment than story, gameplay really has suffered the most in the last ten years along with level size, freedom of approach, modding. Yeah, PC exclusives will decrease more and more as developers will have to develop for as much consumers as possible. And as it does my interest in buying games decreases as I on purpose did not join the current console generation and sold my PS3 and Xbox (and because they were only gathering dust) We'll see what Doom will be like when it comes out but I need some positive fan reviews before I buy it.
That Pinky at the end extracted the piss from my body the first time it happened. Some people seems to denounce that moment because they say it ends with a " cheap jumpscare", when really it's more along the lines of a "Whew... wait, no no NO NO!" moment, seeing as how you they intentionally build up what you know is going to happen.
What I miss most about this game was the dread. You shoot all the demons, read a log, pick up some powerups. You know you're safe in the well-lit section you just cleared out, but you eventually have to go forward into the dark area ahead. The ambient soundtrack and lighting engine helped so much, and that was really missing from Doom 4.
The issues you had with the game are spot on with mine. Especially not being able to switch weapons while reloading, cheap attacks, and the never miss soldiers. There were numerous times I literally raged during gaming as it often led to me dying and starting over if I did not save.
The best thing about Doom 3 is that every single environment had so much effort put into the design and lighting. Considering there's a lot of similar looking spaces they did a great job of detailing them enough to keep them interesting. I honestly don't think any game since has dynamic lighting as good as this game.
Man, the presentation and first few sections of Doom 3 were phenomenal, I had never felt so immersed in a disaster situation since...well the original Half-Life.
At last you've reviewed this, & you have done another EXCELLENT job, although I do think some of your critique was a little bit off. For starters, the story does make sense, but that was because I was searching for all the Audio logs, E-mails & Video recordings, & they offer A *LOT* of backstory, which I find is a great way to combine Story into Doom gameplay, while still being Doom gameplay. Also, about the certain things that are annoying; While they are very valid complaints, I never found them too annoying. For instance, the Imps that jump on you after opening doors, those can be countered by Back pedaling & Sprinting in a zig zag. They never really got to me because I immersed into the somewhat scary atmosphere & played it slow, took my time, searched for all the ammo (not to imply you didn't) took cover (actually effective against Z-Secs [Zombie Security] because they like to take pot shots, so good idea to potshot them back) & was Precocious. Speaking of the Z-secs, I don't get why you say they're annoying when they stop & shoot, or run around... then stop & shoot, because keep in mind They DID THIS in Doom 1 & 2 While it's fun to run in guns blazin like you're in Jon Woos' Hard Boiled, taking it slow every know & then helps. But apart from those "nit-picks" I have done, A spot on review, even if I still consider D00M 3 to be a influential title in Survival-Horror (It is clear that Dead Space wanted to be D00M 3 in Third Person). And on the final note of mods for D00M 3.... ||
I don't want to be rude to the guy who made this video, but he forgot to consider way too much things that you considered in your comment. I have played this game so many times and I still love everything about it. The plot ( wich can be found on emails and audio logs on the PDA's ), the objectives, and the gameplay that was NEVER exhausting. The environment: balanced between wide and close areas. The enemies: always showing and always making a challenge. Besides, the battles always showed realism, in the fact that a real soldier should NEVER let his guard down, with enemies appearing form all sides and corners, all in the same time. And, of course, the dark environment, showing aspects of terror and an atmosphere of death and pain. The flashlight factor on this game: it was on purpose. To make the game even more terrifying. It was part of the gameplay dynamic. Annoying ? Yes, but realistic. In a real situation you'd have to deal with this kind of problem, no to mention that a person would have to deal with the functionality of a flashlight and this kind of problem.
I love this game. Scared the ever loving crap out of me when i got to play it. Still go back and play this one. I enjoy the atmospheric horror this game offers and will always have a special place in my heart.
It's the scariest game I've ever played. I don't understand how many people didn't like it. The sick, gloomy, and evil atmosphere of this game makes it almost unique.
It wasn't "Doom" though...I think that's why people including me didn't like it. It's still good in its own way, but wasn't Doom in spirit where Doom 2016 was.
I'm giving this another play through this week, while I wait for the new Doom to arrive from Amazon. I'm really enjoying it, and technically it looks very impressive for a 12 year old game. It's a hell of a lot of content in a 1.7GB installation.
A great review on an old favorite which I played on my original Xbox & now on my 360 with the "BFG" edition which many of my friends & myself personally love & appreciate the refinements in.
I thought all the weapons were quite powerful. Sure, I did get the Trent Reznor sound pack, but otherwise, I didn't change the actual performance of the weapons, but they all still felt great. The main thing with the shotgun is that it has a ridiculously huge spread, so you have to be able to get to point blank range for it to do full damage. Once you do that, though, it'll pretty much insta-kill anything weaker than a Revanent. There are mods to reduce the huge-ass spread, but I've found that it just made the shotgun way overpowered, considering 90% of the game is in close quarters and tight spaces.
+Gggmanlives Doom 3: BFG Edition, in my opinion, is the definitive way to play the game. Also, to address the "changes" to the core gameplay, I didn't have much of a problem with it. Then again, that's probably because I played it on the PlayStation 3. If I played it on the PC, I would probably be singing a different tune. Anyway, I think the BFG Edition, I guess, was meant to capitalize on the 7th generation of consoles, PS3, Xbox 360, etc. Hence why changing weapons was clunky. It was primarily designed to be scrolled with shoulder buttons, NOT a keyboard. Who knows? Perhaps there will be a patch, fan-made or official for the PC version that'll fix this issue. Just hang in there, Sonny Jim. ;)
@@Scottishlandwarrior I'm really pushing ExoParadigmGamer to do a Remake or Rebreak episode on Doom 3 vs. Doom 3: BFG Edition. Hope he gets around to it someday
I always find funny when I see people saying things like "BFG Edition sux, OG waz better" because I remember very well, back in the day, that A LOT of players complained about all of the stuff that was later changed in the BFG Edition, starting with the flashlight. IMO they actually fixed all of the issues of the original D3 and made it slightly more akin to the action-driven pacing of the Doom 1 and 2.
I still play Doom 3 all the time, and it irks me when people bash it calling it a shitty game as a whole. It's definitely not a shitty game. At all. But it's definitely not a Doom game. Sort of like Bioshock Infinite to the BIoshock series. Infinite is a very, very good game. But I wouldn't call it a Bioshock game.
@Minibeats Hi there. I agree with you in all points. It is a good game. It looks good still to this day and it has in my opinion one of the scariest atmosphere you can think of in a scifi-shooter. Storytelling is good maybe inspired by resident evil and than itself an inspiration for games like BIOSHOCK and DEADSPACE. But and here is my complaint, it feels not like the original DOOM games. The fast paced gameplay is gone. The variety of different map-architecture was thrown away for a giant maze of the mars base which is more or less the same on and on again, just interrupt by the short outside missions and hell of course which are beautiful done. But what is also bad that the most characterful enemypack a shooter could have (the infighting is legendary) were replaced by this horrorfying but in my opinion face and soulless monsters. So it is a good game and ahead of its time technically and it has its deserved place in videogame history, but it is for me no match for the offical DOOM games and most of the wonderful fanmade DOOM megawads :-D
But.... It is a DooM game. It's DooM 3. What did you guys want? Another 1993 Sprite wad? I think it's fun when developers try something fresh. And I love DooM and DooM 2. It deserved to be called a DooM game. It's ID softwares own product, groundbreaking for it's time and a horror version/reboot of DooM 1 chapter 1 (and a little chapter 2).
I honestly get annoyed when people say "Doom 3 isn't a Doom game"... It's still fast paced but of course it's going to *seem* slow when compared to the classic Doom games, it plays out more like the original games in terms of both gameplay + very similar story, and it has the UAC along with every weapon you've seen before in the franchise. People trash on this game way harder than it deserves to be and it's cool to see it get a cult following now. As long as the game includes a silent badass that slaughters demons left and right, a Doom game can be whatever iD Software chooses it to be imo
I never played a ton of the original Doom games, so the nostalgia wasn't a factor when playing Doom 3. I think this is a fantastic game that owns itself in its differences from its predecessors. This is MY Doom and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Gggmanlives The flashlight was a welcome change. Everyone was complaining about that ever since the game was released. What I'm curious about is what other gameplay changes there were.
***** Maybe you complained about it. I knew exactly what they were going for and why they did it. I still don't understand why this annoyed so many people. There's more items in the levels, the game is brighter and I'm sure they played around with the weapons as well.
Gggmanlives You complained about some mechanics in other games aswell, despite knowing what the developers were going for. People were annoyed because they couldn't see where they were shooting and they couldn't shoot when they where holding the flashlight. When you were attacked, you had to switch to a weapon first, which is not only annoying, but could could be decisive in a live and death situation. And the flashlight isn't attached to your weapon, it's attached to your armor. The Game isn't that much brighter, and even if it is, you can still lower the brightness level. The game was still really damn dark in some places. And I hear you complain a lot about some games being very dark. For me it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way. More items is actually rather helpful, so that people won't complain that there are not enough items. And I don't see how they messed with the weapons. Sure you are not imagining things? It's surprising, since you usually consider various standpoints in your reviews, but now it looks to me like you only do that if you feel like it and in other times you nitpick mercilessly while completely disregarding other people's legitimite opinions and complains that you should check out. I've found a review that pretty much adresses most of the complains about this version. steamcommunity.com/app/208200/discussions/0/864949037862019218/?l
***** One thing that really dropped the ball in the BFG Edition was the removal of the EAX effects if you played Doom 3 with hardware accelerated sound. It may not sound like much, but reverb and other audio filters greatly changes the mood of the game.
You forgot to mention the MASSIVE amount of mods developed for this game over the decade. From ones that tweak gameplay, to mods that update graphics, sounds, UI, enemy behavior, and adds widescreen resolution support (for example, Sikkmod), as well as the mods that add entirely new levels or are remakes of older Doom games (like Classic Doom mod). Sikkmod alone makes the game look better than the BFG edition, adds features like HBAO, lens flares, color grading and other modern graphical tricks, which actually require a powerful graphics card to run. Lastly, id has released the source code of all their engines except id Tech 5. Great review, as always.
Well, the Trent Reznor sound pack and phrozo particle mod fix the wimpy sounds and even makes the projectiles look far more badass. Gameplay wise, though, the guns are all perfectly fine. The shotgun, in particular, is the most useful gun in the game. The main thing with the shotgun is that the spread is RIDICULOUSLY huge, so you have to get at point blank range to achieve the full shotgun blast. At that point, it'll pretty much insta-kill every enemy weaker than a Revenant. Hell, I can take on Hell Knights with the shotgun and still win. On Veteran. Once you learn how to maneuver around enemies to get that close, the shotgun is awesome. There are mods to reduce the shotgun spread, but if you do, it becomes ridiculously overpowered, as most of the game takes place in tight corridors, so the large spread was a balancing feature.
I think this was done on purpose. Doom 3 was all about atmosphere, so it made sense to have weaponry that sounded somewhat "weak" compared to the arsenal on the original games. I complained about that too back in the day, but now I'm quite fine with it. That being said, I think the Shotgun sound was somewhat a bit improved in the BFG Edition.
Still playing it in 2017, 2018 and 2019. I'm 26 now and unfortunately I still think it's creepy as hell sometimes. Or let's say "the tension is real"...
There are also *VERY Original* mods for D00M 3. I mean, people have done: PROMETHEUS, EVENT HORIZON, THIEF: THE DARK PROJECT, BLADE RUNNER, PREDATOR, & QUAKE II just to name a few.
Dude I think Doom 3 was my first attempt at recording gameplay.....I could of sworn the game looked better back then. I thought it looked so realistic. I've been spoiled by modern technology. D:
the textures are blurry with new systems due to the age of the game & it not being able to recognise newer hardware, this can be fixed by editing a few lines in the cfg file, makes it look 10x better
When it comes to Doom 3, one can either love it or hate it. For me, it's the greatest game ever developed. Dead Space and Metro series come close. Btw, the atmosphere and suspense factor is second to none. Also, people who say there is no story to Doom 3, I feel sorry for you. Doom 3 had a very strong storyline. It's just that it was hidden. By reading every PDA file, emails, listening to every audio log, exploring the tiniest corners of all the levels, the story becomes the greatest ever because it opens up your imagination and there is so much for interpretation, you almost create a storyline in your head. No game in history ever opened my imagination like Doom 3 did. I'm sure there are people who feel exactly like me and for whom this game is simply outstanding. If only I had enough funds to create a game almost similar to Doom 3 or maybe a sequel, I would do it without hesitation.
@@yardslammer009kennedy2 Just a little bit long time ago. I know it's considered one of the greatest games ever and without the question the best installment in the series but fore some reason, it didn't hook me up. Can't really put my finger on it. RE5 on the other hand was the opposite. Definitely in my top 10 all time favorite.
@@dual7779 If you really liked RE5 that much I HIGHLY suggest you pick up RE4 again ASAP, it's FAR superior to RE5 in every way possible. It's been ported to almost every gameing console in existence so you won't have trouble finding a playable copy however my preference would be for you to get the PS4 port, or if don't own a PS4 and you have a high end gaming PC you can download Albert's full RE4 HD Project mod. Also I'd be in your best interest to steer clear of watching any reviews and/or walkthroughs of RE4 if you haven't already, trust me that first playthrough where you have absolutely no idea of what lays ahead of you is everything.
I was majorly late to the party on this one. I remember owning a PS2 and finding out it wasn't coming to that platform. A few years later I got a second hand XBOX that came with with Doom 3 (Yay!)... Resurrection of Evil (Aww) which I didn't initially realise was an expansion pack. I remember thinking the intro felt a bit rushed, then looked online and realised my mistake (so stopped playing because I wanted to play Doom 3 first). Over time, due to new purchases that took priority, Steam sales and life in general it got buried deeper in the backlog of games I have waiting to be played (literally hundreds). Finally got around to playing both Doom 3 and ROE this week (had a week off work). I was feeling lazy and couldn't be arsed to sit at my desk so played the original XBOX version (through a decent upscaler). Your comments about gameplay reflect my thoughts exactly. The pacing throughout the entire game was masterful in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite some some of the cheap gameplay elements you mentioned. I consider this one a classic. Didn't enjoy ROE nearly so much. The pacing was comparatively poor, the gameplay didn't seem very well balanced with the new additions to your arsenal, and speaking of which, the new abilities and weapons actually detracted from the experience for me. For example, the double barrel shotgun felt over powered, as did the powers granted when you use the artefact and using the grabber made encounters with Imps or Vulgars dull (when you had enough space to back away so they can't melee attack). You could of course choose not to use them, but then the game becomes too difficult due to the amount of enemies and the confined quarters in which you fight, and artificially increasing difficulty by handicapping yourself isn't a concession you should have to make for a game to be enjoyable. The boss fights were pretty weak too. I also felt like the PDA logs were less believable and were there simply to inform you of codes rather than enrich the atmosphere and make the game's world more believable. Thankfully, the XBOX version is a bit better lit (I watched the ROE review on this channel where it was mentioned that the game is very dark).
I`d really love to see a review of doom3 bfg edition to see why it is so bad. and get a review of the exclusive add-on that you only get on the bfg edition.
This is a pretty spot on review. While at the time I personally enjoyed Doom 3 more than Half-Life 2, I think that when you look at it objectively, especially in hind-sight, HL2 is the superior experience in many ways. I always hated the unavoidable damage BS in D3, and it could be pretty samey at times. However, I always loved Doom not for its gory action, but more for the sprawling exploration of demonic labyrinths with the fluid gunplay as a secondary aspect. And I might die alone on this hill, but I think the original Doom's level design always reminded me of Metroid and its ilk. Thus, I loved the slower, isolated, and tense uncovering of occult secrets in Doom 3. Still, I totally understand the opinion of gamers who disagree and think that D3 was too slow, and too much of a departure. A departure it certainly was. Really good review \m/
Hey Gman, just thought I'd give you a recommendation to improve your Doom 3 experience if you have a rig that can run it, download and install Sikkmod with Wulfen + Monoxead Textures. It looks like a completely different game. :D What Doom 3 BFG Edition should have been; Doom 3 Vanilla vs. Sikkmod w/ Wulfen + Monoxead textures
Whats with the extreme blur in that video, it looks like its shot by a photographer that dont know how to focus his camera. If that's what the sikkmod does then I shall pass.
That's the depth of field, which you can customize or just turn off. Sikkmod is great because it's incredibly customizable, even as far as having game options like turning off the need to reload to give it that original Doom feel, having zombies regenerate a set amount of times, the customizations are nearly endless to make it just right for you, even so far as to have color grading.
I've tried playing this game when it came out, but it just scared the hell out of me. I bought it recently on Steam with RoE, and I have to say that I'm loving every minute of it. It still scares me, but I want to see it through to the end. (Thanks Alien: Isolation)
Doom 3 had a long and entertaining campaign, which is something of a rarity in shooters these days. When I think of the Doom series, I think of single player first and foremost, not multiplayer. As amazingly fun as co op is in the first Doom. :) I'm happy to say the new Doom on current gen is awesome too. Great review, mate. Subscribed
Honestly, what killed this game for me was when I realized it still was relying on monster closets for spawning enemies. Something that had to be done because of the tech in Doom 1 and 2, sure, but by this point, we should be beyond the point of what are clearly solid structural walls suddenly opening up and dumping monsters out.
I have a feeling that you're ... not a very good player... not just for this game.. but kinda overall... I remember you saying that Far Cry one and dark messiah were both too hard... In this game you just need to use your shotgun more... Combine skillful moving, running and projectile avoiding with Jedi reflexes and headshots and you'll be just fine... These kind of games really make you feel powerful when you know what you're doing..
Brian Griffin I don't think I ever said the game was "hard", I was pointing out the issues I had with the shooting. I've always played and finished Doom 3 on veteran mode, it's just that you notice the flaws more in games on higher difficulties.
+Brian Griffin lol that's because he complains about every game's difficulty. It's jut not a ggmanlives video if he doesn't mention how hard he found it.
Snookers McFly Kinda my thought as well haha... Gggmanlives Anyway.. it's ok man... I still like your reviews.. and I didn't want this to sound offensive... But what's so bad with demons appearing behind you? You're in a hell infested martian base! Where do you think they would appear? In front of your misfired bullet? hehhe Anyway, you're cool! Keep up the good work!
One of my main complaints about this game is the lack of stun mechanics. In Doom 1 and 2, your guns briefly stunned the enemy, and with the chaingun and chainsaw, stunned them almost indefinitely. But in this game, when you shoot a zombie marine point blank in the face with a shotgun blast, they don't get any knockback, get stunned, or anything. They just keep on firing or just keep running straight at you.
I remember being excited about this game, but soooo disappointed with game play. It's really pretty, but the designers don't seem to understand how weapon lights work. It just seemed like an amateurish update of the classic originals.
excellent work , one thing i noticed with these older vids is no example on screen, in game of that you are talking about. clear examples, show as you explain. You most likely have changed this by, just noticed with the older ones
I absolutely love this game. I must've beaten it a good 15-20 times at this point. Actually, beating the game that many times is probably why I didn't suffer from your issues nearly as much. Because I've beaten it so many times, I can anticipate ahead of time when monsters would ambush me, meaning that dealing with them was far less irritating. The zombies with guns were also much easier to deal with because of this, as I know precisely where they'll come from and can chuck grenades their way or lure them around a corner where I can take them out instantly with the shotgun. I've also noticed that while they're very accurate if you stand still, if you hold the sprint button and are constantly running around and strafing, their accuracy goes to shit while yours remains relatively the same, making them far less of a pain to deal with. Finally, the fact that you have to finish a reload before you can switch your gun also never bothered me as I always knew which rooms or areas I've cleared out and can backpedal there for the couple seconds I need to switch the gun. Also, I pretty much play the game exclusively as a run and gun shooter these days, using the exact same tactics that I do in classic Doom. Sure, when you first play the game, it'll play like a spooky horror game, as you can't really see what's going on, your walking speed is very slow, and enemies like to ambush you. Now that I've gotten good at anticipating enemies, discerning silhouettes and sound cues, and exploring the environment so I can be loaded with ammunition, I can pretty much rush in guns blazing and kick ass. This is also helped immensely by the fact that Doom 3 was made a time when shooting while sprinting was still a thing, and the sprint speed was quite fast. Sure, it wasn't classic Doom fast, but it was fast enough that running and gunning, dodging fireballs, circle strafing, and all the other classic Doom tactics were still the most viable strategies. That's actually what I loved so much about the game. I actually found that the game evolved as I played it more and more. It initially started as a survival horror game, but every subsequent time I've played it, it became more and more like classic Doom. That's probably why I've played the game so many times. Then again, it could just be nostalgia. I was too young to play the original Doom when it first came out, so Doom 3 was my introduction to the series, and seeing as how the Doom series is still my favorite video game franchise of all time, it does hold a special place in my heart.
With all honesty tis game unfortunately doesn't age well in gameplay terms, its a drab hallway with occasional teleporting enemies. I despise slow shooters and that's one of my main problems with DOOM3, it so slow and sluggish everything blends together in a dark mess. but the shadows were cool.
Actually, having played Doom 3 a good 15-20 times, I can say that Doom 3 is not that slow. It's slow when you initially play the game, as you don't know where the enemies are going to spawn and the dark corridors make it hard to see where your enemies are, but nowadays, I play it pretty much exclusively as a fast paced shooter, using the exact same tactics as I do in classic Doom. That's because eventually, I got good at anticipating where the enemies are coming from (allowing me to avoid them much easier), and I also got good at discerning silhouettes and listening to sound cues, which was more than enough for me to know what's attacking and how to deal with them. Plus, I also got good at exploring and finding every little piece of loot, meaning I'm loaded with ammunition and can run and gun without having to worry about running out. Sure, the levels are more constrained, the movement is slower, and there are less enemies, but those cancel each other out. Smaller levels with slower movement means it still takes the same amount of time to navigate a certain percentage of a room, and smaller areas with less enemies means that maneuvering around the enemies take the same amount of effort, so it balances out. That's actually what I liked about Doom 3. It was a game that actually evolved each time I played it. Initially, I played it as a slow paced horror game, jumping at every little noise and enemy, and now I play it as a badass action game.
Amen brother 👌. Playing the re-release on the PS4 (which includes RE & the lost mission) Still got my PC (thick box) copy and did exactly what you did and upgraded my rig for this back in the day. Now can't wait for Eternal and 64 🖤
I think all Doom games are fantastic in their own respect; Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 64, etc - Doom 1 and 2 are undeniably awesome and truly timeless FPS games which really launched gaming into a brand new era where old school FPS truly thrived (Arguably Wolf3D did that but Doom was the one that really set the ship sailing) and unlike Call of Duty today, pretty much everybody loved Doom and if people today say it's overrated or bad then they are probably people who only play modern FPS that expect a really edgy cutscene-heavy story and that they can't handle the shear awesome, rip and tear of an unending onslaught of powerful enemies so due to their own ineptitude and ignorance they label the game as bad. Doom 1 and 2 are hard to complain about really and picking out flaws is extremely hard to do because everything in the games are fantastic, people will claim that the Arch-Vile is overpowered and to a degree he is but that's the point of him, his role in the game is to be an asshole and your job is to take him out as fast as possible and luckily his attacks are very, very easily avoided and appearances are rare as long as you're not playing a badly made wad that looks like a six year old who got his hands on Doom Builder 2. Doom 1 and 2 are timeless masterpieces in my opinion and are still extremely important and well-loved games to this day. Doom 3 however is in my opinion a truly fantastic game as well but not in the same way as Doom 1 and 2, it's a heavily flawed game especially upon release mostly because of the gameplay departure it took from the first two games. Does it work as it did? Yeah, I think so, I wouldn't call Doom 3 a survival horror because it doesn't have the game mechanics such as an inventory system, open-ended exploration, difficult puzzles, rarity of ammo or anything else like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games did. I would call it a horror FPS, which of course really took off when F.E.A.R came about. GGG pretty much labeled all the good and bad things in this review that I totally agree with, although I'll argue that the shotgun Z-Sec soldiers are the worst simply because they have stupid range, ridiculous fire rate and insane amounts of knockback where you can never get close enough to chainsaw the bastard's face off. Although I think the lack of backstory for characters and just about everything in the game really sets the mood for Doom 3, everything is a dark, dark mystery that you feel enthralled in uncovering through finding PDAs, Video Disks, etc. The atmosphere for Doom 3 is purely fantastic in my honest opinion. And with the healthy selection of mods for Doom 3 and a pretty short but very sweet expansion pack, Doom 3 is certainly worth picking up! The mod I will absolutely suggest to you for Doom 3 is the really awesome Fragging Free mod which goes back to the classic style of Doom and takes inspirations from games such as Serious Sam, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Painkiller, etc. It's worth a shot as long as you have Resurrection of Evil, here's the link: www.moddb.com/mods/fragging-free - The final battle for this mod is something of a spectacle and downright crushing and worth the entire playthrough. Although definitely go with what GGG says about the BFG Edition, it's terrible for PC because mod support is thrown out the window and isn't worth it. But if you have a 360 or PS3, it's worth it on those, especially if you love achievements or trophies.
Another cool thing about Doom 1 & 2 is that: It's everything. No Really: Everything! There are so many WAD files & mods for Doom that it is almost impossible to not find a mod you want. And if it isn't there; you can make it YOURSELF. And that would of made Doom a timeless classic ALONE, if it wasn't for all the other things.
Doom 3 forsook everything that made DOOM great. Similar to how Halo 4 & 5 undid what made the original trilogy great for the sake of being "new", iD decided to kill the fast-paced, adrenaline-rush gameplay of DOOM because they decided that 3 had to be "next-gen". What the developers failed to understand in both of these cases is that the core gameplay is what makes a good game great, and while nobody wants them to keep releasing the same game, changing or removing parts of the _core gameplay_ of the series does not add anything, rather it detracts from the experience and effectively disowns the game from the franchise it is supposed to represent. This is why I have hope for the DOOM reboot and zero hope for Halo 6. iD realized their mistakes and are creating a new DOOM experience, not just a random new game with DOOM on the cover. Meanwhile, 343 failed to understand what made Halo 4 a failure, and continued to make Halo 5 even worse. If they didn't learn the first time, chances are they won't the second time around.
I disagree. If anything Doom 3 added to gameplay by increasing the interactivity of the environments. The reboot is the "Brawndo" edition of Doom. A regressive step and one that veers dangerously toward parody.
I've watched so many of your videos recently. Honestly, if you reviewed every single game released, your opinion would be the only opinion I needed to decide whether or not I would buy the game. Great content!
Loved how you'd open a door and be immediatly attacked, or things would sneak up on you from behind. I thought it gave it a hint of realism and really put you on edge. It was the first game I played with 5.1, and hearing things moving around behind me was unnerving. Found myself looking a couple of times. 😂
Doom 3 is terrible. It doesn't hold up for today's standards, which is a little ironic because Doom 1, 2 and 64 are very fun to this day. Doom 3 replaced the claustrophobia of hordes of enemies surrounding you in a large labyrinth with the claustrophobia of small corridors and uninteresting and linear enemies that sponge up damage. Doom 3 is not a doom game. There are barely any keys and there isn't a labyrinth. There games that hold up better than Doom 3, that came out around the same time (i.e .FEAR), so one cannot use that as an excuse as to why the mechanics don't hold up.
striderpsv I'm sorry, it doesn't hold up to *today's standards!?* I feel like saying that about any Fps game pretty much invalidates your whole argument.
striderpsv It's a game about a space marine on mars fighting off possessed zombie marines and demons from hell. How is that NOT Doom? I certainly don't remember Hordes of demons and whatever else in the original doom title, they seem to be more or less scattered about just like they are on Doom3. The only difference is that Doom3 has more zombies than the original doom did. Doom didn't have Labyrinths? The Warehouse, is my response to that, the entire stage is a huge labyrinth with enemies around every single corner. No, Doom3 is very much Doom in story, plot, and design, they just took Doom3 further into a horror game.
striderpsv You whole argument is a flawed mess. I'm sorry if you hate doom 3 so much. Doom 1 is not claustrophobic nowadays maybe it was for you back then, but that is because kids are easily affected when... you know... they are kids. There is only hordes and hordes of monsters and demons in doom 1, 2 if you play custom wads and mods like the brutal doom mod. Because the original was slower paced. Doom 3 is literally doom but less arcade-ish, even more slower paced than the original and a more horror game in its core. Doom 1 was not a horror game, even tho it has monsters and supernatural entities. There's a reason why I played the shit out of doom on my ps1, back in the days, but couldn't go near resident evil 3's cover. With this being said, I'm not trying to imply that Doom 3 is better than 1 or 2. I'm just stating that it is not as bad as you make it look to be
Honestly, i think this game is an absolute masterpiece still to this day. All the “bad” things you mentioned in the video are good for the game, because it mostly revolves around taking control away from the player. That’s what makes Doom 3 so nerve-racking. And don’t even get me started on the story, setting and lore - it’s just soooo damn cool! I absolutely love this game. It’s one of my favorite games of all time.
Game James Well for me the difference is I got bored around three fourths of the way through Far Cry and haven't bothered finishing it but I had a blast with Doom 3 and beat it very quickly because of how much fun I was having.
Sounds like complaints to me, 1. If you don't want the weapon reload to happen pay attention to your ammo count swap the weapon before it needs reloading. 2. The imps jumping open doors at an angle always be prepared for it. Adapt to your environment don't complain.
Recently played in VR on a Quest 3. Truly a memorable experience. For some reason back in the day (I'm 50 now) I never bothered with D3 so it was completely new to me. Scary and atmospheric as hell if you'll excuse the pun! You are right about adapting your play style to the environment and enemies 100%. Only gripe with the VR version was the lack of a weapon wheel. So on a PC you could just mash a key of middle mouse scroll to change, where as in VR is was slower and felt inconsistent.
'The days when single player took absolute focus above everything else.' Too right mate.
Ikr
Miss those days.
Really miss those days
I don't hate multiplayer just hate that they are using it as an excuse to get rid of single player.
They don't cut out that often, to be frank. level 3 seems to be the only time that happens in the first episode.
Not true, it happens all the time in the original.
Doom 64 seems to be the tonal predecessor to this game.
8:59 I hate how that's become an obsolete thing now. All people care about nowadays is multiplayer, multiplayer, multiplayer. Nobody can just sit down and play a good game anymore.
Alex Howard Wolfenstein New Order, Shadow Warrior 2013
Two great modern FPS focused on single-player.
_I KNOW RIGHT._
Caio Ferreira Keep in mind its just 2. Not 15 or 20, just 2
Its really harrowing actually
I honestly think Doom 3 still holds up till this day.
sobekflakmonkey I disagree. It's a pretty terrible game and definitely not Doom. The only thing that holds up is the lighting. The mechanics, storytelling, acting, enemy design, level design and pace of game all don't hold up. There are other FPSs that came out around that time that are infinitely better. I understand that people have different tastes in video games, but I really want people to hate this game and throw it back to hell from which it came.
sobekflakmonkey Dated yes, bad no.
striderpsv I really like this game...
I respect your opinion though, and granted it does have some problems, some of which you mentioned.
sobekflakmonkey I'm glad you said that, because I plan on giving it a try.
striderpsv It's not a pretty terrible game lol.
Wolfenstein 3D was a tech demo though
How exactly is Wolfenstein 3D a tech demo?
For one it's the evolution of technology that had already been released by id as far back as 1990 with Hovertank and Catacomb 3D.
Tech demo? Wolf 3D? What?
Thank you @AlexeiVoronin , I cant stand gamers who claim to be "Doom Purists" and jerk each other off about "how terrible" this game was.
@Old Liquid To be fair the fact that it has pistons doesn't necessarily mean that it's a combustion engine. Could be something like a compressor for example.
fun fact "Betruger" means "traitor" in german
Deathwish7777777 No, "Betrüger" would. :P

Isn't Verräter traitors ? Is betruger singular?
Dr. Betruger ? Sounds an awfull lot like "Betrüger", the german word for cheater or traitor.
I guess the people who hired him werent the smartest.
How about Dr. Doom?
Mr. Doggy Meaty Is that from one of the books?
As a massive Doom fan I still enjoy this game and definitely agree with this review as a whole. One thing I will suggest to those who are going to play it to download the Trent Reznor sound pack for the game, it makes the monsters and most of the weapon sounds pack more of a punch.
Seriously, the gun sounds in that pack blow the default sounds by default. The pistol actually sounds like it is making damage for once! :P But it is also cool to hear Trent's whispers in it which admittedly sounds much creepier than some of the default sounds.
This game showed us the future of graphics
Yeah. This, UT 2004, Far Cry 1 and Half Life 2
AND NOBODY MENTIONS UNREAL!!!
I think it's the opposite. Graphics actually got worse since then. Most games still have baked-in lighting today while this one was 100% real time.

It had enough new stuff to be a new game in itso wn right :)
Doom 3 is a separate storyline, unrelated to D1 and D2.
The sound design is just astonishingly good, I can listen to those weapon sounds and monsters as if they were music.

Bro I just love coming back to this review, just sitting down and letting your voice getting my nostalgia back!
I remember the year 2004, the year of Doom 3 vs Half life 2 debate was crazy. Though, Half life 2 in many ways, is a better game.
***** They were actually comparing the graphics.
Cpt.Tacos Well, don't HL2 graphics look more realistic? Just look at the character's faces.
Cpt.Tacos I think I get what you mean.
TheVanillatech What do you mean "Doom 3 was more forward thinking"?
bro I have arachnophobia. the Trites were horrifying for me
Veteran Soul ok I know. They get pretty close to you. Just another thing about them that bothers me
then you shouldn play doom 3. or hexen 2. I will give you a heart attack literally
Superschokokeks I've played through Doom 3 about 3 times now, 2 times on nightmare mode. The Trites are even more terrifying then because they will melt your base 25 health in seconds.
Ethan Shelsta D:
this game made me constantly turn around in all fps
MaTtRoSiTy
New Doom does seem to have picked up some modern influences which I sometimes find a little disappointing like the execution moves.
(unlocking a door, welding open a door or closing one, or defeating an enemy with a QTE)
I am also saddened that science fiction settings have fallen out of favor.
MaTtRoSiTy
I can understand why gameplay is higher for you at the moment than story, gameplay really has suffered the most in the last ten years along with level size, freedom of approach, modding.
Yeah, PC exclusives will decrease more and more as developers will have to develop for as much consumers as possible.
And as it does my interest in buying games decreases as I on purpose did not join the current console generation and sold my PS3 and Xbox (and because they were only gathering dust)
We'll see what Doom will be like when it comes out but I need some positive fan reviews before I buy it.
+Alex Howard it's a pretty killer moment
What I miss most about this game was the dread. You shoot all the demons, read a log, pick up some powerups. You know you're safe in the well-lit section you just cleared out, but you eventually have to go forward into the dark area ahead. The ambient soundtrack and lighting engine helped so much, and that was really missing from Doom 4.
The thing I love about DooM 3 the most is the menu theme of both the classic and BFG
Old Gman: sounded like a virgin
New Gman: sounds like a chad
The issues you had with the game are spot on with mine. Especially not being able to switch weapons while reloading, cheap attacks, and the never miss soldiers. There were numerous times I literally raged during gaming as it often led to me dying and starting over if I did not save.
Can't stop watching Doom reviews. Can't wait for Doom 4.
Oh man, that Pinky intro. Still gives me shivers. The game is very atmospheric especially if your computer could handle the shadows.
Also, about the certain things that are annoying;
While they are very valid complaints, I never found them too annoying.
Speaking of the Z-secs, I don't get why you say they're annoying when they stop & shoot, or run around... then stop & shoot, because keep in mind They DID THIS in Doom 1 & 2
While it's fun to run in guns blazin like you're in Jon Woos' Hard Boiled, taking it slow every know & then helps.

In a real situation you'd have to deal with this kind of problem, no to mention that a person would have to deal with the functionality of a flashlight and this kind of problem.
lol I love the audio quality in this one. I've been watching allot of your newer videos so this kinda caught me off guard.
also doom 3 will forever be better then any halo game
Those tentacle soldiers sneaking up behind you were the worst.
I've just bought the BFG addition for my ps3 as u get the original Doom and Doom 2.
A great review on an old favorite which I played on my original Xbox & now on my 360 with the "BFG" edition which many of my friends & myself personally love & appreciate the refinements in.
One thing that bugged me in this game was the gunplay, all the weapons feel weak as shit, especially the shotgun.
Shokarneda I though they felt fine why is evryone so pissy about the weapons they feel fine to me?
Just hang in there, Sonny Jim. ;)
And it has shoulder mounted light cos i hated carrying either the torch or gun.
@@rodrigof.r.desouza3587 it's the case of not having your cake and eating it too.
Well, this was even before Bioshock were a thing
How does the BFG Edition mess around with the gameplay? It plays pretty much the same.
***** Flashlight is attached to every weapon, there's also minor changes with other gameplay elements.
Gggmanlives
The flashlight was a welcome change. Everyone was complaining about that ever since the game was released.
What I'm curious about is what other gameplay changes there were.
*****
Maybe you complained about it. I knew exactly what they were going for and why they did it. I still don't understand why this annoyed so many people. There's more items in the levels, the game is brighter and I'm sure they played around with the weapons as well.
Gggmanlives
You complained about some mechanics in other games aswell, despite knowing what the developers were going for.

My biggest problem with this game is the weapons. They sound really whimpy, and as a result just feel unsatisfying. The shotgun is especially shit.
Yes, 100% yes. I liked the game a lot, but the weapon sounds are LAUGHLABY BAD!
Rodrigo F. R. de Souza did they change all the sound effects in the big edition?
@@mr.nickname9172 No, actually the sounds are 95% the same old ones, but some of them had some improvements like the shotgun sound.
One of my favorite games of all time. Used to especially love playing co-op.
Still playing it in 2017, 2018 and 2019. I'm 26 now and unfortunately I still think it's creepy as hell sometimes. Or let's say "the tension is real"...
There are also *VERY Original* mods for D00M 3. I mean, people have done:
PROMETHEUS,
EVENT HORIZON,
THIEF: THE DARK PROJECT,
BLADE RUNNER,
PREDATOR,
& QUAKE II just to name a few.
Dude I think Doom 3 was my first attempt at recording gameplay.....I could of sworn the game looked better back then. I thought it looked so realistic. I've been spoiled by modern technology. D:
How do you only have 50,00 subscribers!? you are truly the best game reviewer I have ever seen!
I LOVE hard lighting. I hope that getting this game running is worth it!
the textures are blurry with new systems due to the age of the game & it not being able to recognise newer hardware, this can be fixed by editing a few lines in the cfg file, makes it look 10x better
Fortunately
Doom 3 was soooo awesome back then! I loved every second of it! A true masterpiece!

I love how all these videos aren't full of bs to reach 10 minutes and how you actually take time to make these
Love this game!! Prefer it as id intended, switching between flashlight and gun :)
Have you ever played Resident Evil 4?
My favourite game forever.
What Doom 3 BFG Edition should have been; Doom 3 Vanilla vs. Sikkmod w/ Wulfen + Monoxead textures
Hey dude, I know about Sikkmod I just try to keep games looking fairly vanilla for reviews so it's not misleading.
I get it man, just trying to help out in case you were unaware. :)
That sounds alot better. To be honest, the depth of field stuff going on in that video makes me think of badly shot vacation videos =P
I've tried playing this game when it came out, but it just scared the hell out of me. I bought it recently on Steam with RoE, and I have to say that I'm loving every minute of it. It still scares me, but I want to see it through to the end. (Thanks Alien: Isolation)
I have always felt like Doom 3 is a somewhat better version of deadspace
more like FPS version of Dead Space.

Doom 3 had a long and entertaining campaign, which is something of a rarity in shooters these days. When I think of the Doom series, I think of single player first and foremost, not multiplayer.
+Brian Griffin No you're wrong. I am a good player and I know what I'm doing. But thanks for the input.
Gggmanlives If I didn't find this too hard there is a possibility that you're missing something... Nevertheless, no disrespect.
Cheers
Brian Griffin
I don't think I ever said the game was "hard", I was pointing out the issues I had with the shooting.
In front of your misfired bullet? hehhe
Anyway, you're cool!
Keep up the good work!
The last area is a visual feast, for sure one of my favorite video game locales
Also plan on reviewing the expansion pack thingy, RoE?
*So you made it this far...*
Doom 3 is more like Half Life than Doom
Sebastian Gomez Did we play the same game?
The similarities are undeniable.
Also Doom 3 is more like Dead Space + Alien Isolation
@@aaadj2744 bro those games are released after Doom 3. You can say that It looks like Alien movies.
Well I guess, Alien Isolation and Dead Space are inspired by Doom 3........
+ford460v8 Except I do show examples? What video did you watch?
my main problem with Doom 3 is the boss fights. There aren't that many, and the ones that are there are terrible.
sadly Doom 4 had 3 bosses.
The boss fights in Doom 4 were awesome. I would have liked there to have been more, but a good game nonetheless.
MermDaddy It was the exact same in doom 1 and 2
I absolutely love this game.
DarkStarAngelo Well said!
Gggmanlives Thank you good sir! o/
Yeah dude!
Another cool thing about Doom 1 & 2 is that:
It's everything.
No Really: Everything!
There are so many WAD files & mods for Doom that it is almost impossible to not find a mod you want.
And if it isn't there; you can make it YOURSELF.
And that would of made Doom a timeless classic ALONE, if it wasn't for all the other things.
Don't forget the upcoming doom that is going back to its roots
Bennett Harnisch Doom3 is the best doom game aside from doom2016
I've watched so many of your videos recently. Honestly, if you reviewed every single game released, your opinion would be the only opinion I needed to decide whether or not I would buy the game. Great content!
Doom 3 better than Doom 3 BFG
So Many Poops my argument is not if it holds up for today's standards. My argument is that it's not a Doom game and a bad one at that.
striderpsv You literally said that it doesn't hold up to today's standards.
striderpsv It's a game about a space marine on mars fighting off possessed zombie marines and demons from hell.
Far cry was far far better than this, doom 3 was borring repettive wtih bad combat and slow paced gameplay everyone hated it when it was releaed.
You obviously haven't seen Gggman's Far Cry review. He hates that game.
i know and its sad.
As someone who played both only recently for the first time... Far Cry is good but Doom 3 I liked ALOT more.
I have been replaying both for many many years the combat and the level design is a joke compared to far cry.
Game James
Well for me the difference is I got bored around three fourths of the way through Far Cry and haven't bothered finishing it but I had a blast with Doom 3 and beat it very quickly because of how much fun I was having.
