i do. i love the arch vile. my favorite monster of doom. its unique scary and pretty hard to kill as well. and i love the idea that he can resurrect demons. its a dick move but a nice idea. havnt seen that in any other game yet.
I've never seen Doom as a horror game personally; to me it's always pure action with obvious horror inspirations from film but the Aubrey Hodges soundtrack and the coloured lighting along with the chunkier sound effects of the PS1 version turns it into a damn creepy game at times. But I feel Doom 64 does a fantastic job at being far scarier thanks to its darker aesthetic and tone along with Aubrey's awesome tracks.
DarkStarAngelo na man it was pure horror on ps ! Honestly you should try it. The music and atmosphere shit me up as a kid. A few years ltr I played the real versions on the pc, yeah they are better but in many ways but the sound effects and arguably the music wasent one of them.
@JW - I used to have it on the PS1 when I was really young but my memory is extremely fuzzy, I only really remember my first time playing the PC version when I was nearly 5. Meeting the barons of hell at the end of Phobos Anomaly for the first time will always be one of my most iconic gaming moments ever, I'll never forget it. @Gōdon Gurando - Bernis is pretty excellent, some of the most chill music I could ever sit back and relax to.
First time I played Doom it was on a demo disc called "Mania 2". And it was the "Simpsons Doom" mod. So for the first time I saw the Barons they were Ned Flanders.
The shift between Doom PC and Doom PsX is pretty interesting. PC doom made you feel like a Hardcore Badass, where as PsX is almost like being in a 90s Industrial Horror Movie like Event Horizon or Aliens.

Supreme Ruler of Emptiness false. Every time you die you have to reset the game and re enter the password to get all your weapons back. The ps1 does not keep your password in memory
The PS1 version of DooM was my introduction to the game. I loved it. When I got a decent PC to play DooM, I thought, "WTF is up with this cheap-sounding metal music?!" PS: Now, I love the OG soundtrack, don't hate me.
My copy of Doom on the SNES turned up two days ago and playing that on a harder difficulty is not only a test of skill but also how well you handle avoiding epilepsy.
The PSX Ultimate Doom / Final Doom soundtracks were simply amazing with their eeriness and atmospheric ambient horror soundscapes! I used to play jDoom sourceport on PC with PSX soundtrack and PSX sound fx pack, that was my choice for the original Doom experience; namely taking the best parts of the PSX and PC Doom. The only downside of the PSX Doom series is a bit simpler level design and texture replacements in some map layouts. There's no Arch-vile demon either maybe due to the techical limitations and memory capping of the Playstation. Still, PSX Doom is a 100% Doom experience for anyone still new to the original Doom.
he is right psx doom was gimped in a few small ways because playstation had less memory and things. The music and atmosphere though was amazing. It makes doom really scary and play so differently. I like all versions of doom in there own way
Shamaboy S About as good as a trainwreck, if I recall max FPS is around 12, controls have a near full second of delay, movement is awkward, enemies have no backs so they can never be ambushed, BUT! The graphics are actually really good for SNES, sprites are a little funky and the game is in a window, but it's nowhere near as ugly as people make it out to be. Best part is the music is great, and it has just about every PC level and with near-perfect map detail. It's a mixed bag :P if you love Doom like me, then try emulating it, just have a good drink!
It was! And I had a hard time with this one as well. My copy of this is impossible to see during gameplay (not a contrast issue in either the TV or the PS2) and runs sluggishly.
As a huge fan of PC Doom, this port is still worth playing, if only for the creepy atmosphere and unique sound design from Aubrey Hodges. And also, CLUB DOOM!!! RAVE PARTYYYYY!!@!!@#!!!

The change in sound fx and music was the best thing to ever happen to DOOM even now when I play the various pc mods and wads I always add in the ps1 sfx and music.
Doom on 32X was my first “DOOM” experience. I didn’t even know what a PC was. So when my uncle got this version of the game, it became my most played style of DOOM. It’s hard for me to play the superior PC version, but have the original soundtrack. I grew up with the amazing PlayStation soundtrack, and it added a certain feel to the game. I’ll never forget it.
There is just something about Doom, it's timeless in its atmosphere and gameplay. Had the Jaguar version first, then we got PS1 Doom and a link cable, and life was basically over at that point.
That was my introduction to Doom believe it or not, but better than none. I was 14 and my parents never would have let me play it if they had known! Of course now many years later I've enjoy the originals and the mods in all their full-screen glory.
Nathanael Ligon pretty much same here, first time I ever played Doom was the SNES version (on an emulator). Believe it or not, it was totally playable, but then I got the PC version with GZDoom. I tried to replay the Nintendo version out of curiosity, and... Yeah, that's pretty crappy.

If I remember correctly, there was a bug in the Playstation port where the Cyberdemon could kill itself by its own rockets. Its possible to do it on the Tower of Babel level, by getting behind one of the Pillars at the corner and standing far, yet inbetween the pillar and the corner of the central room. Get the Cyberdemon on the other side, and wait for it to blow itself up slowly as it fires at you and the rockets hit the wall.
You derided Jaguar Doom, but although being far from perfect, was programmed by John Carmack himself. More importantly, it was used as the source code for the 32X, 3DO, GBA, and even the PlayStation port. The Playstation version could also use the Playstation mouse, which in theory works like the PC mouse with aim look.
@Supreme Ruler of Emptiness I think it was the agvn made it trendy to hate the 32x version dispte the fact it was more playable than the snes version which he praised.
Actually, PS1 was really powerful for its time. So powerful in fact, that atleast its 3D capabilities were better than on any PC back in 1994, if I'm not mistaken. And Doom came out a year earlier, in 1993. So what is going on? Doom is actually not even a 3D game, so maybe that's one of the reasons. And while the PS1 was very powerful, its hardware was very different compared to PCs. The PC Doom was probably difficult to max out back in the day as well, I'd imagine? Also, look at the best looking PS1 games, like MGS, they look very different and they have graphically aged even more than Doom, but I don't think they are technically inferior to it, if anything quite the opposite.
My all time favourite game, especially the Playstation version which I appreciate for the added creepy atmosphere and awesome lighting. The few unique levels to this version are great too. I seem to revisit this annually (along with Doom 64) :D
Ok, so I love Doom and all, but I'd hesitate to call it horror. Horror elements are present, sure, but as soon as the legions of Hell are made out to be pretty vulnerable to one massive bloke with a badarse shotgun and throbbing erection, it loses all scariness to me.
Doom 3 tries to be horror it has a flashlight mechanic and there a decrease in the speed that we all have come to know and love and it is just really clunky
Great review but man you should have chosen the tracks from Mt Erebus and Deimos Anomaly when you were comparing the PS1 and PC music. Those are great examples of how terrifying PS1 Doom soundtrack is.
So true. I remember Playstation doom was my first port of doom and it was a good choice. When i got on to map 21 (mount Erebus) thats where i saw how scary the soundtrack could get.
@6:23 actually when you die you can put in a code it gives at the end of every level in order to restore your weapon/health/bonuses to what it was when you began the level
And you know he is EXACTLY talking about Caddy becaaaaause? He might as well be also talking Icarus cause he doesnt like playing on high difficulties. Or better yet, he could be talking about ANY Sonny Jim not up for a challenge. Not sure how he is EXACTLY talking about Caddy other then "Oh yeah, he reviewed the game too but played it on Hurt me Plenty."
Shin Computer-Monster Well it being a (likely?) joke is kinda the point, so yeah "Just a Prank" is sorta fitting? I used it as a springboard to vent :P
When you die, you can go to password in the menu and the password of the current level is already filled. You start with your loadout you had before you died.
Played it back in the day on the PSX...A fantastic cover and the best version I've ever played. That ambient music had a lot of tension that made Doom scary at times compared to the pc version which felt more like a over the top balls to the walls action pack shooter. The Psx version had more horror embedded. Me and my buddies played it with a link cable at the summer vacaction...There was a lot of hot and scary nights...

I much prefer the music and sound effects of this version. They made a PC mod for this version :) I used to have nightmares about this as a kid. Like the game would glitch and break and wouldn't pause in the dream and that music omg NIGHTMARE FUEL!
Excellent review as always Sunny Jim. I'm really happy you reviewed this. You may be interested to know Gggman that there is a WAD collection called PSX Doom: The Lost Levels which reimagines the rest of the levels from Doom, Doom II, Master Levels and Final Doom based on this port. Cheers.
Completely different. DOOM 64 was more like a fresh made pizza based on a Special recipe with its own lil take on it, While PS1 DOOM is the pizza from the Special recipe, but you took it home for Left Overs, and after warming it up in the microwave and even though its not as fresh, it tastes good.
Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough No what im saying is that if a nintendo console was able to have doom why the hell wouldnt a ps1 have doom aswell, since you know Nintendo is meant to be kid friendly and all
TheJonmega11 Yet the Nintendo ironically had the best console fps that time. Probably because of the controller since the n64's analog stick was designed to emulate a mouse I think.
Best port and version in my opinion. My first experience with Doom, my pc couldn't run Doom at a playable framerate but in '95 this happened. I miss the 90's.
i think this version is kinda overrated. it doesent play well with the controller and low fps and you cant see shit because of the low res and just how dark it is (as if the original dos doom wasnt dark enough) the new soundtrack and the light effects are a matter of taste i guess. but it also uses alot less different textures than dos.
I wish the new Doom leaned more toward horror. I got bored of just killing everything and I wanted it to creep me out or disturb me, but it's not scary in the slightest.
ikagura It didn't suck. It was just very different. Everyone expected it to be more like DOOM 2016, which is why nearly every mod for it makes it more of an action game than a horror game.
As much as creepy as the original DOOM was, I never saw it as a Horror series. I didnt like 3 as much cause it was more Horror and less action, where as the original balanced it well. DOOM 2016 was more hardcore action, which I liked more. But I can understand ones opinion.
Purvdragon-sensei thats not how time works. People expected doom 3 to be similar to old dooms. Not the doom that just came out. You know because doom 3 came before doom 2016
Great video as usual Gman. In fact if you die in PS Doom, all you do is go to the password screen and hit enter, as the password is already there, and you'll start the level with all the previous weapons and ammo you had.
To be honest, the revamped ambient soundtrack and other sound effects make up for the lesser looks, when compared to the PC. The PSX port of doom is one of the best, if not the best, versions of the original games.
Yup. I like this more the original PC version honestly when played on a source port that cleans up the graphics. OG doom graphics are a bit pixelated by today's standards.
Definitely my favourite version of the game. I fired it up last night on my PS2 and it still creeps me the fuck out. Aubrey Hodges did an amazing job on the soundtrack.
The PS port of Doom was so playable and addictive as I've finally been able to play it after having seen it run on shop PCs that were out of my price range.
This was my first Doom game and I remember truly enjoying it. I would say it started my foundation for move and shoot FPS games. I had nothing to compare it too so I didn't know I had a more complete version than PC players. It wasn't another 5yrs till I got my first PC.
3:46 i have earphones on and this track gave me the chills, i never noticed this music had so much atmospheric bass! I must replay this game now with headphones on *googles how to connect headphones on ps3*
I love how the PlayStation version of Doom has both Doom 1 and 2 combined, I love how it feels like the classic PC Doom as far as the graphics and the gameplay, but I love the horror soundtrack and the effects. It fits the tone of the game really well. I like the heavy metal soundtrack and I'm not taking away from it, but I think this game would have scared me more when I was younger on the PC version if it had this horror style music in there.
Almost embarrassed to admit the PS1 version was my intro to Doom and the fps genre. PC gaming wasn't even on my radar at this point but man I loved this game and it started my love of fps games

This Was The Very First Gman Video I Saw Love Your Content And Sense Of Humor
My all time favourite game, especially the Playstation version which I appreciate for the added creepy atmosphere and awesome lighting. The few unique levels to this version are great too. I seem to revisit this annually (along with Doom 64) :D
Doom 2 on gameboy advance made my obsession with doom
Ok, so I love Doom and all, but I'd hesitate to call it horror. Horror elements are present, sure, but as soon as the legions of Hell are made out to be pretty vulnerable to one massive bloke with a badarse shotgun and throbbing erection, it loses all scariness to me.
You are the horror
Doom 3 tries to be horror it has a flashlight mechanic and there a decrease in the speed that we all have come to know and love and it is just really clunky
I love the atmospheric playstation soundtrack. Wish the future releases will include all the versions as an option
I’ve been continuously binging your videos . Every. Single. Video.
I'm a simple man...i see ggmanlives has a doom review, I like
Had no idea it was so unique among the other ports - might have to go source a copy 🤔 for, umm, posterity....of course 😬
Now all I'm waiting is for an Android/ios port of the RPG Dooms 💀
@6:23 actually when you die you can put in a code it gives at the end of every level in order to restore your weapon/health/bonuses to what it was when you began the level
6:32 - 6:40
GGGMan calling out Caddicarus there, oooooh.
RarefoilB Caddy's review was a massive disappointment :( it was obvious he didn't even fucking try
Inb4 "Just a Prank, bro."
Shin Computer-Monster Well it being a (likely?) joke is kinda the point, so yeah "Just a Prank" is sorta fitting? I used it as a springboard to vent :P
I know who Caddicarus is, but I can assure you that is not a reference to him.
6:17 "HorseSHIET"
The only time I know that Gggmanlives ever rapidly changes tone.
I laughed so hard after he said that.XD
Hey G. Can you do a video on Duke Nukem Total Meltdown(aka Duke Nukem 3D for PSX)?
This is where I played most of my Doom multiplayer
"Any Doom is good Doom"
So you admit you enjoyed HDoom.
I love your brutal honesty in any reviews you do!
"Any source port"? What, Legacy? 3DGE? Eternity? Boom? Chocolate? MBF? SMMU?
...or do you mean any recent Zdoom-based source port?
When you die, you can go to password in the menu and the password of the current level is already filled. You start with your loadout you had before you died.
Quake 2 PS1 please 😭😭😭
I found myself thinking about that comment he made "Like solving a rubix cube covered in Doritos dust " way more than I wanna admit xD
Part of what made Doom great was the original soundtrack. It was fantastic.
"Doom is a first person shooter"
I think the genre at the time was known as "Doom-clone".
Doom is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone which is a game like doom which is a doom clone...

"it feels like you're trying to solve a rubiks cube covered in Doritos dust" - GmanLives 2017
Doom is not a "real" horror game. I'll stick to the original soundtrack anyday.
Consider that you are fighting with demons in hell itself, i think the change on the PS1 version was better.
PC Doomers on hearing PSX music: "WTF is this? Where is my metal?"
PSX Doomers on hearing PC music: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
True story.
Cheers.
Wow, a fucking ps1 port? I mean if n64 can do it why not a ps1
TheJonmega11 The n64 one isnt a port.
Completely different.
DOOM 64 was more like a fresh made pizza based on a Special recipe with its own lil take on it,
While PS1 DOOM is the pizza from the Special recipe, but you took it home for Left Overs, and after warming it up in the microwave and even though its not as fresh, it tastes good.
TheJonmega11 The N64 had plenty of other mature titles (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok, etc.), so that aspect wasn't really an issue
This is my favorite version of Doom.
Mine too
Best port and version in my opinion. My first experience with Doom, my pc couldn't run Doom at a playable framerate but in '95 this happened. I miss the 90's.
i think this version is kinda overrated. it doesent play well with the controller and low fps and you cant see shit because of the low res and just how dark it is (as if the original dos doom wasnt dark enough) the new soundtrack and the light effects are a matter of taste i guess. but it also uses alot less different textures than dos.
d00mer 34 Add in the fact that the N64 had a better Doom game.
That music comparison was, for some reason, fucking hilarious.
I wish the new Doom leaned more toward horror. I got bored of just killing everything and I wanted it to creep me out or disturb me, but it's not scary in the slightest.
slvrcobra1337 Doom 3 sucked tho
slvrcobra1337 Doom 3 did that ....
ikagura
It didn't suck.
Funny how I don‘t care for most of the games you review, yet watch almost all your videos simply because of your narration. You sound... nice. xD
"Any Doom is good Doom"
... Tell that to Doom 3.
It is an objectively good game. Stop riding shotgun on the bandwagon of hate, just because it's not what you wanted it to be.
Great video as usual Gman. In fact if you die in PS Doom, all you do is go to the password screen and hit enter, as the password is already there, and you'll start the level with all the previous weapons and ammo you had.
This channel is fekin awesome
There's a total conversion of this to PC, as well as the PS1 version of Final Doom.
They're extremely good.
This was the first doom that i guess you can say tried to be scary, the sound track alone is just classic and ive always loved this version
I was 8 in 1996 and I got a ps1 with Doom, Tomb Raider and Destruction Derby for Christmas that year 👌 What a time to be alive.
thank goodness that 5 generation console has some extra easter egg on that bonus presentation.
The Special Custom Edition. This was like a preview of what Doom 64 would be once Midway was completely unleashed.
My childhood game, Doom for PSX, the amazing soundtrack, ambience, sound effects, one of the most iconic games ever, the best port ever !
I sunk hours and hours into this version, quite simply amazing
It sounded great on three speaker sound system. That damn cyberdemon stomping around...😱
The music changed from every Thrash Metal soundtrack on earth to every Trent Reznor music piece ever made. I love it.
Thank you for mentioning PSX Doom TC, I was about to. The best way of playing this version. Fuckin love its atmosphere, colored lighting and music.
Played a lot this game on my ps1 and still love ir in 2022. Best Doom 1 and Doom 2 ever!!
Almost embarrassed to admit the PS1 version was my intro to Doom and the fps genre. PC gaming wasn't even on my radar at this point but man I loved this game and it started my love of fps games
