I agree with most parts of this list, but I’d score Doom 3 much lower. Too much of a horror aspect, takes too long to get to the actual ripping an tearing I know and love from the franchise. I’ll put it between Doom 64 and Doom 2.

Doom 3 didnt feel like doom... but it was still amazing. It did atmosphere really well and I feel like that forgives the fact that it's a bit slower than all other doom games.
Perfect for me, since I am not a fast-paced gamer. I actually had more fun playing Doom 3 than I did playing the first two. I didn't even complete the second one, because I got so sick of playing it.

It's a neat idea but there are folks like me who get painful eye strain playing very dark games and it makes Doom 3 unplayable. Good for those who can play it but I couldn't.
It's for gameplay purposes. The fact that you have to switch to a flashlight gives the player a tradeoff. Do I risk putting my gun away to improve vision? If the flashlight is attached to the gun, that removes that element of risk, of decision-making on the part of the player. There'd be no reason not to have the flashlight on at all times, which defeats the purpose of making it dark in the first place. Moreover, the BFG edition makes maps brighter, which only further reduces the horror. The darkness is key to Doom 3's aesthetic and mood, and having the maps be brighter or the flashlight on at all times just detracts from the experience, both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay.
@@UnchainedEruption They could've implemented a battery for the attached flashlight that gets drained and needs time to recharche to balance it out (similarly to the way it was done in Halo). It could have maintained the tension but not make it as frustrating as having to give up your weapon to be able to see in the dark in a shooter (rather than a pure horror type game).
@@dennisdavidov782 Battery is a worse system because it can create breaks in the players progress as they are having to wait for their flashlight to recharge before they can continue moving forward. How annoying was it playing The Library level in Halo and constantly having to wait for your torch to recharge before you could keep moving. This was so bad that in the anniversary edition they effectively floodlit the level so you didn't even need the flashlight at all.
MSE Gaming I strongly disagree doom 3 looks bad now. The human character models look chunky and plasticy but other than than the game still looks neat, with that sick stark lighting etc. Has aged better than many games from the era.
Well, I respect your opinion and I understand why people didn't like doom 3 (people were expecting it to be an action fueled title in the same level the old ones are) but, as a stand alone game, it's a good game, dare I say, a great game even outstanding. It's interesting to see this type of video rank doom 3 above doom 2. Most of these types of videos would just shit on doom 3 and put it pretty low on the list.
Awesome video man, your passion for the series really shines through, and I was surprised how positive you were with Doom 3, I guess the latter part does really make it worth it, doesn't it? I'd love to see a similar video from you on the Heretic/Hexen series down the road, I know Heretic 2 is almost a completely different genre, but I'm curious what your take is on them.
I love Heretic and Hexen. They definitely still get more recognition than Strife and Chex Quest, but it makes me sad how often these two seem to completely fly under the radar in discussion of Doom games and WADs.
Here's my ranking, worst at the top, best at the bottom, of the ones I've played: Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil Doom 3: the Lost Mission Doom 3 Doom 1993 Doom 2 Doom 64 Doom 2016 Doom Eternal The only reason 64 is higher than the original two games is because of nostalgia. I had an N64, and that was actually the game that got me into the Doom series as a whole. To that, I'm eternally grateful.
I agree with this list almost 100%. Only thing I'd change is doom 64 over original doom and under doom 2. I love 64 tbh it's fun and I kinda like the dark atmosphere. But doom 2 is the best of the classics imo
Pretty much how I'd rank them. No qualms whatsoever. Although, I'd say in terms of the visual representation of Hell, Doom 3 was the best. The last section of that game is an audio/visual masterpiece.
WarlordRising the disturbing soundtrack for doom 3 scared me when i was a kid lol use to have nightmares and chills when I was a kid playing those parts

The sound design of Doom 3 was awesome. There was a point where you hear a voice calling you down a corridor, and then you get to a blocked door, and the whispering voice goes full volume and says something like: 'They took my baby!!!' I was playing it with stereo sound and all the lights switched off and it creeped me out...

the original doom and doom 2 are timeless masterpieces. can still throw on either one today and enjoy them immensely. The punch from the shotgun, the chainsaw, punching aliens to bits with berzerk punch ,the sound effects and music, the wonderful level design.

@@shintjee9860 Exactly! I wish Doom 2016 was more like Doom 3, it did sort of take a step backwards for me but it was still a very good game. It's a very close call between Doom 3 and Doom 64 for me, in terms of it being the best. I have so much nostalgia for both games.
Cameron Kirby actully doom 3 went agains all the laws of doom however it would be cool if in doom eternal there was a DLC that allowed you to play as a UAC soldier No super powers just a normal human however it should only be a dlc not the base game
Doom 2016 (not 4, don’t call it that) is a *reboot* of the series. It’s essentially doing what doom 3 did, but following the original storyline more closely. Doom Eternal is a direct sequel to Doom 2016, essentially being a modern Doom II.
Doom is one of those games that if you start playing it you end up playing it for hours. I remember years ago when I was doing a small graphic mod to make a video I would have to open it just to test and would keep playing it for the hell of it
@TheSlipGateUser Redneck Rampage as worst? Heh, you must have missed a lot of those other Build "gems". ;-) BTW My top 4 would be: Duke Nukem 3D > Blood > Shadow Warrior > Powerslave/Exhumed (Yes, I mean the Build one - hugely underrated game)

For me personally, Plutonia's evil level design was what made it unique and memorable for me, especially the Arch-vile maze. There may not be new content, but the levels I actually found quite endearing at times.
@@VGamingJunkieVT ...You do realize that Plutonia is one of the best remembered, most revered map packs of all time and a key inspiration on the modern doom mapping style?
@@VGamingJunkieVT No, no it isn't. Saying "Plutonia is a great level pack" is subjective. You can hate it. You can love it. That's fine. Saying that it's historically significant and a key inspiration on modern Doom mapping isn't subjective. That's actually straight-up true. It's been listed as an inspiration on the *vast majority* of the classics, things like skepland, Erik Alm's work, Skillsaw's designs, and countless other maps, including Alien Vendetta. Its kill-corridors and strategic enemy placements are a prototype of the nowhere-to-hide style that is popular in modern maps, where unlike classic doom where there's a lot of ducking behind corners and backing up as you clear area after area and there's almost always a safe area the majority of the time, monsters are everywhere in a given area and there are almost no blind spots, forcing you to remain in constant motion and constant focus to avoid shots. I mean, it's not there yet, but it's a crucial step.
@@THB192 I was referring to my comment, you responded to my subjective opinion by getting way too defensive. I think you're talking to the wrong guy, I like Plutonia but most of the levels are forgettable in my opinion.
Pretty solid order, actually. I never really understood the hate for Doom 3, but at the same time I would agree that it belongs in the middle of a list like this. Not the best, but nowhere near the worst.
Doom 3 started my doom interest. I always thought that game made me feel like a bad ass lol especially after I killed two hell knights with the shot gun. Then again I played that game so much to the point where it was all a run and gun experience for me, I completely forgot that it was supposed to be a “horror” game haha.
Considering the Switch has no virtual console, Doom 2016 was ported to the system, and Eternal is coming to the Switch, id should release a Doom collection with Doom 1-3 with all their expansions for the Switch (and possibly the PS4 and Xbox One)
I like the switch version, because is a good game to pick up and play through an area when you are out, though I will say the graphics seem to definitely take a dip compared to the PC version. While this might not be the same when it's docked, I can't say since I lost my cord for it and have yet to buy a new one. I would totally get on the PC, but it wouldn't be able to even run the game. Though I do agree with the ports of the other games, as they would run perfectly fine on the switch, and while I'm not sure about now, I do remember there being a collection of the games on the 360 a couple years ago when browsing the store.
@@averylongley8584 Switch Doom is the worst version.I don't see how they'll get Eternal to run on it. Trust me invest ina mid range PC or at least a Ps4 or X1 for Doom. That game is built for 60FPS
@@TimeBomb014X Totally agree. Also, aren't they trying to make ARK run on the switch too? How the actual fuck do they expect that to happen? Most high-end computers cant even run the game at a somewhat decent frame rate. Edit: Oh, also, I do have an X1, so I will definitely buy the game on that when it comes out if my computer isn't better by then, though I have already ordered a graphics card, so that should be fine.
The Switch version felt kind of off for me. It's probably because I was using the regular joycon controller. It would probably feel better if I was using the Pro Controller.
Every list is bias. Nothing wrong with that. Im getting Doom Eternal on PS4 and I'm almost as excited to finally be able to play through Doom 64 along with it. It looks fantastic. I maybe played an hour of it as a kid.
I dunno, I think Doom 3 aged like freaking milk. Me and my buddies made the drinking game out of it - we took a shot every time that game pulled "spawn imp in front, spawn imp behind" trick and took two shots every time something jumped at me through the opening door. We were pretty hammered by the end of it. This game is repetitive as hell. Pun intended.
TheScape55 I’m not entirely sure what you’re looking for in a Doom game if it isn’t about killing demons in kill rooms. Also some of the late game arenas absolutely can have more than a dozen enemies at the same time if you don’t kill the demons fast enough. The last 2 arenas for VEGA Central Processing come to mind as well as the last 2 arenas of Argent D’Nur. The last two arenas of Lazarus Labs are pretty packed with demons the last time I played it on Nightmare.
Even though Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil were nowhere NEAR my faves, I REALLY LOVED the Betruger/Maledict Boss Battle at the end of Resurrection of Evil. It was honestly one of my favorite bosses of the entire series.
But the ending of that game was one of the worst and laziest I've ever seen. It's literally black screen with the voice saying "Marine, welcome home!" and then theme song starts playing. I don't expect the Lord of the Rings ending, but c'mon...
@@Buraz93 Arguable... Better than the wasted non-ending telling you that your ending was in another expansion pack that 3 ended with. That ending STILL pisses me off. Even worse was at how long i had to wait to play ROE. Also I kinda liked the implied symbolism of ROE abrupt ending... Dying in the literal heart of hell only to be welcomed into the arms of heaven. At least that's how I interpreted it.
After discovering your channel about a year ago and watching all of your video's during the past year I already knew Doom 3 would be at a decent place, instead of being treated as the worst game in history like most people do. To me Doom 3 will always be my favourite and I'd even rank a little bit higher than 2016's Doom. To me Doom 3 is just an absolutely fantastic game. The atmosphere, the sound, the graphics, the level design, the story, the way computer screens were not just some blurry mess, but you could actually see and read everything on them and even interact with them. To me everything in this game is just perfect. Of course, 2016's Doom has updated graphics, a bad-ass soundtrack and insane Glory Kills, so it's an amazing game, but compared to Doom 3 I've always felt there's something missing. I've always liked how Doom 3 builds up very slowly and let's you walk around UAC, talking to people, seeing all those machines in action, just the way UAC looks and feels like a real factory where people are at work until shit hits the fan and then you see the people working at this factory change into zombies. It's just fantastic. 2016's Doom is bad-ass, but it's just fast-paced shooting straight from the start without any interaction with other people while UAC is still up and running. I miss the jump scares, I miss the slow and long tram rides from one side of the factory to the other through outside area's, I miss the tension of walking through dark area's with a flashlight knowing right next to you a panel is going to fall down followed by a demon coming out of there and attacking you. I also think the chainsaw in 2016's Doom is useless. The maximum amount of petrol you can carry for it is only very limited, so you can kill one or two demons and you're already out of petrol. Stronger demons that appear later in the game are even to big to be killed with the chainsaw, so you can't even use the chainsaw. You're just standing there with your chainsaw and you get the message you don't have enough ammo while you're already at the maximum amount of petrol you can carry. Compared to Doom 3 the chainsaw in the new Doom is nothing more than a joke and completely useless. If I want to use the chainsaw, just let me do some damage without killing it. Walking into a room full of those slow-moving, fat zombies, taking your chainsaw and cutting them all to pieces one by one was just so much fun in Doom 3. I've finished replaying Doom 3 only about a year ago, but just seeing your video makes me want to replay it again. No matter how much other people hate it, in my opinion it's the best Doom of them all. Don't I have any complaints about Doom 3 then? Well, there are two small things: When listening to audio on your PDA the environment sounds of the game itself are sometimes louder than the sound of the PDA making it very difficult to hear what they're saying. Then you'll have to walk to a place without so much environment sound to be able to listen to your PDA. However, in some levels there are loud sounds (like screaming babies) everywhere, so it's just impossible to listen to your PDA. I would have lowered the environment sounds by 50% to make the sound of the PDA stand out more (see it as the marine holding his PDA closer to his ear, paying more attention to his PDA than his environment). The gastanks should last much longer. A person can just hold his breath for longer than a gastank lasts in Doom 3. You can't do any exploring in outside area's, because you're only running from one gastank to the other as quickly as possible. I don't mind having these gastanks in the game at all, but make them last for at least several minutes, instead of having him pick up a gastank of 20 liters and making it last for less than half a breath. Other than these two little things the game is just pure perfection. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil: I completely agree with this video. Doom 3: BFG Edition: Let's just pretend that one never happened. They just took everything that was good in Doom 3 and completely fucked it up. Is this the Doom 3 those people wanted who are always complaining about Doom 3? Well, that's not my kind of Doom not all. It was a terrible game.
@@bleedingfromtheanus240 I've played Doom 3 on the PC immediately when it was first released and to me the changes of the BFG edition have a negative impact on the game. Of course, it looks amazing, but these are some of the changes I don't like: - The menu's are uglier and advanced keyboard function mapping is removed; - The shoulder-mounted flashlight (I know this is how a flashlight works in most games, but the flashlight of the original Doom 3 just added to the suspense); - The new interface of the PDA is terrible; - Zoom function had been removed; - Limited amount of save slots that are shared across all three campaigns, compared to the unlimited save slots of the original; - Cutscenes can no longer be skipped, which is annoying when saving right before and dying right after a cutscene; - In the sewer level of Resurrection of Evil the gas mask and canisters with air are completely removed taking all challenge out of this part of the game. For me the BFG edition adds nothing more than the Lost Mission campaign. When playing through Doom 3 I just play the original Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil and only use the BFG edition for the Lost Mission campaign. Of course it'll also depend on which game you've played first. If the BFG edition is a person's first experience with Doom 3 I can imagine it's seen as a good game. To me it's a big step back from the original, so I'll stick with the original for the first two campaigns.
@@ijslandernl Well, I mean, a lot of it just boils down to who it is that's playing really, what makes a game is rather subjective. However, from what I can say about my experience, I think I could counter some of these points. - I guess it could be for the aesthetic, but menus aren't really something to look at for hours, being less cool doesn't matter all that much to me if I barely see it, I'd only pause the game for a bathroom break, and even then, I'll just unpause as soon as I get back. Playing on pc and not having key mapping can be a problem, but I played the console version, so it's not a problem on my part, but you get a point regardless, my experience doesn't matter more than anyone else's. - The flashlight didn't add much tension at all, you switch back to your weapons so quick that I was amazed there were complaints about it at all. If you took a full second or more for larger weapons, then there would be tension and then i would be sad that they got rid of it, but it goes away so quickly that I honestly don't really feel more scared than normal, it's not enough to annoy me, but it really doesn't add anything but a Doom version of a Resident Evil knife run, but with an even more useless weapon. - Okay, the PDA's interface is kind of problematic, I'll give you that. - To me, zooming in is about as useful as a leaning mechanic in an fps; practically useless and a bit of a pointless inclusion. The only time I've ever really used a lean mechanic was in F.E.A.R., and even then, I used it very rarely, using it behind cover wasn't as helpful as you'd think, you would still get shot anyway, though F.E.A.R. was a much harder game. Actually, more people need to play that, the shotgun could blow dudes off their torso or into a chunky red mist. Good game, go play that and Condemned. - Why do people need to save more than once? Like, use one save slot for each campaign, why does everyone have this problem with games but me? Save over the others to replay the whole game again, it's a fun experience no matter how many times you do it. - Does kind of bug people, but it does give you time to think about what you did wrong, or another strategy can come to mind. Dumb excuse, but the story still rocks. - Sort of a mixed bag here, on one hand, it does take away challenge, but the gas mask and air mechanics were only used in one level, so its inclusion was pointless if it isn't done multiple times throughout the story, meanwhile on the other hand, id should've added more level like that, Dead Space wouldn't come out for a othef few years, so innovate, make it so you go through areas where the oxygen is gone because space has leaked in, walk around on Mars with no air, do something cool and original, don't just give us one level where there isn't any air and then never bring back that mechanic again. The real problem isn't that they got rid of it, it was that they added it in the first place. Whats the point of adding a mechanic that never gets used again? That's like when The Evil Within 2 had that one level where you had a gas mask and you had to sneak around an area without getting spotted while in first person, it happens once and never again, don't give us a taster of something cool and not do it again, that's teasing, and teasing is annoying. All in all, I can understand some points, but a few aren't much to lose sleep over for me, let's just both be happy Doom 3 exists at all rather than arguing over which is the superior version. Oh, yeah, and go play F.E.A.R. and Condemned again, they're both excellent, Condemned especially.
@@bleedingfromtheanus240 Agreed. No matter what version we prefer, Doom 3 is a great game. So many people, so many preferences. Everyone likes something different and everyone plays games in a different kind of way. True. F.E.A.R. and Condemned are also fantastic games. The A.I. in F.E.A.R is just unbelievably good, the graphics and sound are superb and you're right about the shotgun. To me it's one of the best shotguns ever. Slow down time, one blow from the shotgun and in slow-motion you'll see a person change into a red cloud of blood and body parts. Just fantastic and it never gets old.
Now that Doom 64 has officially been released on PC I think it should rank higher on the list. Despite playing it for the first time in 2020 I enjoyed it more than Doom II which I grew up playing. It might be the novelty effect too. Time will tell.
I need to find a mod that makes more sprites for weapon animations. Thats the only downside of that game, the slight movment of a single sprite replacing multiple shots displaying different angles and lighting of a weapon, like the shotgun esecially

I agree. From my definition, "worst to best" doesn't consider things like originality, how it changed gaming and that kind of thing. And I think that without outside influences of what "best" means, doom 2016 far better than the original doom. That being said, it seemed like originality and the impact of the original doom were taken into consideration, so I get why he put it at the top.
@@83rdgec17 that's how i judge too. it's way unfair to use cultural influence to judge, then doom 1 will always be on top. but i think doom2 and 1 are both better than doom 2016 even by this criteria. the level design is more creative, monster closets beat "arenas" any day, more straightforward without all the "unlocking" clutter and just straight up fun. doom 2016 is a worthy sequel though, unlike doom 3. but the best thing about the originals that can NEVER be replicated is the map editor. that thing is a game on its own, and it's my favorite game. the ease-of-use and flexibility can NEVER be replicated with modern engines.

"Its too dark to see unless you use the flashlight" isn't that the whole point of a flashlight ie its dark.
That's why I've been using mods for Doom 3. I mean wtf is having no flashlight attached to your weapon in a future?
@@UnchainedEruption
They could've implemented a battery for the attached flashlight that gets drained and needs time to recharche to balance it out (similarly to the way it was done in Halo).

Thanks!
As for me, Doom 2016 is an absolute PoS. What effing red circled on the ground, where's running around and strafing, so many lags, are you kidding. The rest of the list is OK. Tough job, but the result is OK.
This was made before Doom Eternal
Doom 3 is good as a stand-alone game. But as a Doom game, not so much.
Its a great doom title and always will be, its amazing, realistic, and scary at the same time!
@@xMTxcameron doom 2016 shouldn't be like 3, 2016 was perfect, it finally made doom guy his original fast, unstoppable self!

Doom 3 and it's expansion is still my favorite Doom stuff. Doom 1-2 - classics, but I love gritty sci-fi horror aesthetic of D3.
Doom 64 is the true Doom 3.

THANK YOU.
Doom 2016 (not 4, don’t call it that) is a *reboot* of the series.
It’s essentially doing what doom 3 did, but following the original storyline more closely. Doom Eternal is a direct sequel to Doom 2016, essentially being a modern Doom II.
@@albo3music I'll call it Doom 4 if I damn well please, my dude.

Oh boy, that would be loooooong list. But I am pretty much sure what would be best and worst: Duke Nukem 3D and Extreme Paintbrawl. :)
@TheSlipGateUser Redneck Rampage as worst? Heh, you must have missed a lot of those other Build "gems". ;-)
BTW My top 4 would be: Duke Nukem 3D > Blood > Shadow Warrior > Powerslave/Exhumed (Yes, I mean the Build one - hugely underrated game)
Blood is the winner for sure.
@TheSlipGateUser its very funny though. I liked it :)

For me personally, Plutonia's evil level design was what made it unique and memorable for me, especially the Arch-vile maze. There may not be new content, but the levels I actually found quite endearing at times.
Some of them are memorable, but they're generally white noise in that they're forgettable.
@@VGamingJunkieVT ...You do realize that Plutonia is one of the best remembered, most revered map packs of all time and a key inspiration on the modern doom mapping style?
@@THB192
You do realize this is subjective opinion, right?
@@THB192
I was referring to my comment, you responded to my subjective opinion by getting way too defensive.
WMan37 it doesn’t look too appealing to me at least. I prefer the newer and older dooms
Doom 3 started my doom interest. I always thought that game made me feel like a bad ass lol especially after I killed two hell knights with the shot gun. Then again I played that game so much to the point where it was all a run and gun experience for me, I completely forgot that it was supposed to be a “horror” game haha.
I can't believe you put Doom II before Doom 3
I can.

Doom 2 is AMAZING. I cant believe he put Doom 3 that high. Buuuut, it's personal taste, I guess

Doom 64 was my childhood, I’d rank it higher but it would bias

Every list is bias. Nothing wrong with that. Im getting Doom Eternal on PS4 and I'm almost as excited to finally be able to play through Doom 64 along with it. It looks fantastic. I maybe played an hour of it as a kid.

@@Buraz93 Better ending than the originals.
Well, there are two small things:
When listening to audio on your PDA the environment sounds of the game itself are sometimes louder than the sound of the PDA making it very difficult to hear what they're saying.
Of course, it looks amazing, but these are some of the changes I don't like:
- The menu's are uglier and advanced keyboard function mapping is removed;
- The shoulder-mounted flashlight (I know this is how a flashlight works in most games, but the flashlight of the original Doom 3 just added to the suspense);
- The new interface of the PDA is terrible;
- Zoom function had been removed;
- Limited amount of save slots that are shared across all three campaigns, compared to the unlimited save slots of the original;
- Cutscenes can no longer be skipped, which is annoying when saving right before and dying right after a cutscene;
- In the sewer level of Resurrection of Evil the gas mask and canisters with air are completely removed taking all challenge out of this part of the game.
I really loved doom 3. It was - for me - a very atmospheric and immersive action horror
This is a 100 page book.
Watching the Doom 2016 footage, I was constantly yelling at the screen "Dash button! Dash forward! Damnit!"
Now that Doom 64 has officially been released on PC I think it should rank higher on the list. Despite playing it for the first time in 2020 I enjoyed it more than Doom II which I grew up playing. It might be the novelty effect too. Time will tell.
Doom 64 is by far my fave first person shooter ever. I've still only ever played it on N64 with original controller.
I need to find a mod that makes more sprites for weapon animations. Thats the only downside of that game, the slight movment of a single sprite replacing multiple shots displaying different angles and lighting of a weapon, like the shotgun esecially
The plethora of Revenants in Final Doom made it so awful. In all of Doom 2 there are roughly 60 Revenants; Plutonia Experiment (just one half of Final Doom) has 350.
Plutonia also has over 700 chaingunners and 99 Arch-Viles
