    In Doom 4, it is told that Doomguy basically killed demons in Hell for an eternity while travelling through different dimensions and versions of Hell while doing so. Not only does that make Doom 4 a direct sequel to Doom 64, it also means that every single fucking .wad is canon. That includes Pirate Doom, Nuts.wad and FUCKING GREZZO. id, you beautiful bastards.

    I didn't agree with any of the complaints. This isn't '91. I am never going to complain about checkpoints when the originals didn't have them. They seemed spaced out fine, too. Right before large battles or even in between "this isn't my final form" boss sections.
    The lost souls I found much easier to kill than in previous games. Especially with how accurate the assault rifle is.
    Your performance is a strange anomaly as Doom 4 is easily one of the best PC releases we've had in years. Even while streaming at 1080p60fps and playing at 1440p the game didn't stutter and played very smoothly. I'm going to guess you have an amd gpu as apparently amd's side is not as lucky as nvidia's with this release but I can't confirm that.
    All the other complaints were basically "this isn't a doom remake. It should be a doom remake!" They took doom, made it into a new game, while still managing to make it doom. That's called a sequel. That's how a sequel should be. They would not have made any where near as much money with a different title or enemies. Just really, really silly complaints when it comes to this.

      Uhh, it's not really a sequel(even though the game hints at having tons of universes with Doomguy fighting demons making every Doom canon), more like a reboot. Doesn't make it any less kickass though.

    • @MrCaptnrex
      @MrCaptnrex 6 років тому +60

      it is a sequel, they basically tell you he's the original doomguy and he traveled to many worlds/ different universes fighting hell, and then was trapped in the sarcophagus by the demons until this alternate earth came in and brought him back. Funny enough hes B.J. Blazkowicz descendant of William from wolfenstein series.

      +SegaCDUniverse If you're talking about Quake 1, I'm right here with you. I've always regretted that they changed the game universe for the "sequels". The atmosphere in Quake 2 & 4 feels more like Doom to me. Have you tried playing Quake in DarkPlaces with HD textures and models, normal mapping, dynamic lights and new particle effects? It gives the game a whole new second life. Also, you should see what the community does now with the modern source ports. Maps like Honey or Something Wicked will floor you.

      You won't regret it. You'll need a powerful rig if you wanna enjoy top graphical quality. If you don't feel like going through the hassle of installing dozens of mods by yourself, check out the Epsilon Build: it does pretty much all of it for you. Just drop your .pak files from the original games into the Epsilon/id1 folder and you're good to go, you don't even need a regular Quake install!
      Works with the mission packs and a few mods, too. For the maps I mentioned earlier, though, you'll probably need a less heavily modified engine. Try a "dry" version of DarkPlaces, that is one without all the tweaks of the Epsilon build, or QuakeSpasm. The latter will be needed for maps that use Quoth content (another mod that adds new lovecraftian monsters and features), like Red777.
      Note that the Epsilon build doesn't have hi-poly models for all monsters. The most common ones, like the ogre or the marines, still have low-poly models. You may want to change that but you'll really need a high-end up-to-date system to run the game smoothly with these, especially in the mission packs. ATTENTION: if you replace some models with more detailed ones, you'll need the appropriate textures for them or you'll likely end up with invisible monsters.
      Also, for legal reasons you can't pack the original music with any online distribution (that's why the GOG version has none), but you can easily google an .ogg pack of Nine Inch Nails' soundtrack. XOlve's replacement is very good in its own way and fits the game quite fine, so you should play at least one full episode with it, but personally I can't imagine playing the original game without NIN's creepy dark ambient tracks.
      In any case, though Epsilon does ease up the process, you'll probably still need to do some manual tweaking in not-quite-user-friendly options menus, if only to get the lighting to work properly (a good spot to check this is the last turn in E1M2's shooting spikes corridor - if it's overly lit to the point of blinding your character, then something's definitely wrong). But it's worth it nonetheless.

You might want to replace the original E2M6 with this one (you'll need to rename it) to play it within the flow of the single player campaign, as it's too tough to start it from scratch without cheating: you won't have enough shotgun ammo and no RL/GL to blow these zombies up. I disagree on it not feeling like Doom and the double jumping, I haven't seen my friends (with varying quality PC's) have fps issues at recommended settings so it doesn't seem too prevalent (I'm running flawless).
    But on the double jumping, there was some rudimentary sprint based platforming in the old game , due to vertical limits of the old Doom game (there was also jumping bits in Doom 3), this was the farthest it could go. It seems natural with the tech we have now, and the move toward jumping seen in later, more tech advanced Id games makes the inclusion of jump and ledge grabbing platforming seem like a natural addition. To me it's one of those "if they were able to do it in 1993 they would have" kind of feelings.
    Does that make sense GG?

    • @shawklan27

    • @simovihinen875

      +FrankDaTank1218
      I think old games were often about "let's see what this engine can be made to do" and newer ones a bit more about "which kinda stuff do we want to include" without too much creativity being manifested. Back in Doom, even very simple platforming represented something that kinda hadn't been done before in the genre (well there was RotT I suppose) and so it was kinda cooler for that reason. A whole level could be based largely on a gimmick like Doom 2's The Chasm or Barrels o' Fun, because they could. So compared to something like that, based on what I saw in this review, I doubt there's a lot that could be called new now in the D4 designs. There was Prey even...
      So yeah if the original id could have done it in '93 they might well have, but they would have done a lot more cool stuff as well. Again, I'm basing this just on the review and I don't know how it actually plays. Furthermore in Doom the speed was higher so I guess platforming would have been more exciting for that reason too. Lastly, if you're used to the Quake titles, your bar for what constitutes fun movement is gonna be way higher than just double jumping up platforms.

    I'm not sure I understand your comment about wishing the game had a different name/wasn't marketed as a DOOM reboot, especially since you followed that um immediately by saying it was everything you could want from a DOOM game. If it does the franchise justice, then what is the issue with them making use of the franchise's name? After all, it's been 23 years since DOOM first came out, and Id have been struggling to get their feet back in the game for over a decade at this point: it makes sense for them to hail back to their glory days to try and grab business, and if it is as good as everyone seems to say, then they've shown that utilizing that old design sense was the most positive route they could have taken.

    I disagree with the idea that this game should have been its own IP. Doom needed a comeback. Since I was little I've been waiting for this game. Story time;
    My exposure to Doom was the movie. When I was a kid I saw it and enjoyed it. (Now not so much) I saw the special features and saw there where games that the movie was based on and I immediately wanted to play them. I wouldn't play them until summer of 2007. That's when I finally got my hands on Doom 3 Ultimate Edition and that summer, all I played was Doom 3 and the classics.
    As the years went on my want for a Doom 4 increased and then waned as nothing seemed concrete. The fact that the artwork of the game and rumors that it was like Call of Duty, made me not even want the game. And then nothing but silence. No news no info nothing. After playing through RAGE my want for Doom vanished much like the game. All I had was Doom 3 and the classics.
    Suddenly E3 2013, a teaser showing a Cyber-Demon and the title DOOM show up. Hope was regained. The more I heard about this Doom the more excited I got.
    Then E3 2015. Gameplay trailers, footage concrete evidence that DOOM was indeed back. My hype went to overdrive. For a whole year I've anticipated this game for a whole year and no amount of bullshit ass steam reviews were gonna stop me from getting this game.
    Now we are in the present and I LOVE THIS GAME. Much like Splatoon it is that breath of fresh air on a stale genre that is overcrowded with "realistic military shooters"
    DOOM is back and I can now lay years of anticipation to rest.

      PB/BD has thousands more levels, can have hundreds of more enemies that are both faster and smarter than those in the new game, and has several more weapons with alternate modes and attacks. New DooM has forge mode, only has levels built from damn prefabs, is not able to be modded, and is a slowed-down console-friendly version of PB/BD. The PC version is a DAMN PORT. Let that sink in, the sequel to one of the PC's flagship franchises that is based on a mod that is nigh-unplayable on consoles and which plays on one of the most customizable pc-centric engines out there is a damn console port.

    What perplexes me about Doom is how they marketed everything people would hate about it like the lackluster multiplayer and never the meat of the game itself, the thing people craved for. I'm glad the actual game is good, however, I was worried for a long time they would fuck it up. May pick it up soon.

    It's interesting to see your take on the new Doom.
    I was very skeptical before, so I wasn't expected to like it as much but I love it as a game. It's great compared to modern FPS, a step forward, although I do have some criticisms.
    Yes the enemies throw projectiles, yes there are no hit-scanners (also Doom had them too, but they were dumb with slow reaction and bad aiming) so you are supposed to be like in the past, strafing around monsters and projectiles like you are the king of the world, that feeling. But no. They did two things. The monsters are really clever, really fast jumping on you, and all the projectiles are way way faster. Which is a good thing, isn't it? Why look so bad and unrealistic (by todays standards) as the slow moving fireballs in original Doom? But look what happens here. They reduced the player speed at the same time. Yes, it looks still fast compared to COD. But just find one of the classic levels easter egg and see how much it takes to traverse areas compared to the original Doom. I wouldn't mind if the monsters were slower and dumber. But now you have both an upgrade of monsters and projectiles speed and AI, and downgrade of the speed of the main character. The running speed is like the walking speed in Doom unless of course you get the speed powerup or much later upgrade some runes to move faster after you glorykill. It makes me losing in tedious situations, for no good reason, not being able to easily manouver faster than the monsters, like the old Doom where you felt like the king of the world.
    And the glorykills, fine, I don't mind them as much but sometimes those cinematic animations dissorient me. The camera changes when I do a glorykill, yes I know at that point enemies can't hurt you. But when the camera comes back I have a hard time half second to realize I can still move again, while maybe fireballs where coming towards my way. Sometimes I do a glorykill to get some health and some attacks where about to hit me just after I finish the glorykill and I lose more. So they say, if you don't like them glorykills, don't do them. But when you make a monster to stutter, you have to waste one more shotgun blast (and being distracted while other enemies attack) to kill him. If you don't do the glorykill, he is revived. There is a similar thing in Brutal Doom (but not with the berserk part and the fatalities) where you kill an imp or human, and they are down on their knees, where you can blast his head with your kick or weapon and get +5 health,. sort of like the stuterring purple/orange state in Doom 4. But in this case, if you don't care about this, he just bleeds to death and dies. So,. in BD you could ignore that (and there wasn't an animation anyway, that was different than the fatality with berserk pack, but the stuttering state reminds me of the state in Doom 4 where you now have the glorykill fatalities, so it's a mix of inspirations from BD). So they could have done it like this, the enemy is stuttering (like MK fatality where the enemy is dizzy but then falls down if you don't do anything) but leave him if you want.
    And then the checkpoints you said it. This is especially bad in the parkour sessions (where you have to climb up high ledges especially in the tower) where you can just fall and die. While I find the climbing mechanic alone very original for FPS and some interesting level designs (I don't care if it's not Doom), the fact that they don't give you the option for Quicksave/load makes them tedious, although there are not many of them (they are very easily playable and not even 1/100th as tedious as that awful jumping puzzle section in the remade Rise of the Triad). I do like they try new things with the verticality of the levels, first time we see something on an FPS (although some people mentioned the Metroid FPS series I never played). Oh, a friend didn't like the fact that many places are like Serious Sam arena's, less the exploration and taking down individual monsters like original Doom. Certainly the game takes many inspirations from various games, Brutal Doom, Serious Sam, some Metroid FPS (was it prime?) and maybe more (the filling of infinite grenades do remind me when my brother played Destiny, very similar, and upgrades give you two grenades and faster replenish, although this concept could have been taken from previous games).
    But yeah, I am ranting. I don't want to compare the new Doom with oldschool Doom as much. They are similar in weapons/monsters/arcady feeling but preety much different. I know I will continue playing WADs in classic Doom, but maybe finish new Doom few more times (I need to find the secrets and maybe unlock the Nightmare mode), but then New Doom will be uninstalled while classic Doom with user maps will remain in my HD forever. I am also skeptical of Snapmap, very prefab like puzzle pieces way, not individually designing your spaces with linedefs and sectors like old Doom. It could be very restricted and maybe I won't see very unique levels as individuals spaces (but I know the scripting is more unique, I've seen some videos where they can make mobas and such).

    • @Psalm696969
      @Psalm696969 8 років тому

      +Optimus6128 "The running speed is like the walking speed in Doom" It's still a major improvement over Doom 3. Personally, in the original Doom, I only run when I need to. The running speed is so fast that with the character's inertia, it makes you lose precision and can cause "accidents".

    Personally, I think the checkpoint save was a good call compared to a quick save.
    Giving players the option to set their own save point is a very powerful gameplay mechanic, to the point that it makes the players somewhat OP and is a detriment to the whole experience (a constant safety-net which the player constantly reminds themselves).
    When you said that killing 50 demons before dying and having to start all over wasn't fun, you could have just lowered the difficulty. Of course, this may be a design problem where the devs put the checkpoints too long in between.

    Upgrades can have a huge effect, especially rune upgrades. All upgraded to level 2: 1.Armored Offense (Enemies drop Armor shards when glory killed) 2. Intimacy is best (enemies got more dmg resistance in stagger mode, but also stagger of less dmg, so you get many glory kills) 3. Rich get richer (unlimited ammo as long as your armor doesn't drop below 75), is an insane combo =D Though Rich get richer is only obtainable in level 9, so one already did most of the game. Still it is a lot of fun to use.

    I don't mind the checkpoints, in doom 1 and 2 the majority of people just end up abusing the quick save feature and just brute forcing their way through the campaign with trial and error. Demons ambushing you lost a lot of their impact if you quick save before, now you know their exact positions and you equip the best weapon to deal with them.

    But original Doom 1 & 2 had sprinting! I haven't yet bought the game so I can't say for myself but how do those arena parts feel? I watched some earlier gameplay footage and saw this arena where the player kept jumping around for many minutes killing more and more enemies as they spawned there and I have to say it didn't feel very Doom-y. It was like something from a more modern video game with survival/horde modes. How's the rocket launcher, by the way? In the MP beta it seriously lacked any kind of physical feedback when it hit the enemy. Instead of pushing the character backwards, the characters just ran through the explosion even when the rocket itself hit them in the face. I didn't notice any kind of flight vector alteration either when I shot other players mid-air, something that was a key element in both Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament. Also, while in the original Doom shooting a rocket at an enemy in close range most likely turned yourself into gibblets, in the MP beta people were shooting rockets from 1-2 meter range with almost no splash damage.
    Some are small gripes, I know, but also something that makes the experience less Doom and more... Well, Halo, I guess.

      +Gggmanlives it really wouldn't fit though. Allow quick save and people will just inch their way through UV and Nightmare everytime they kill an enemy. if you like quick saving before you know an area is going to be hectic, why hate checkpoints anyway? that's what it does. I liked the fact I was punished, and it usually ended in me being more hectic and head on about my fights if I had to redo them.

    I'm glad you pointed out somewhat slacking checkpoint system. I was playing on Nightmare difficulty and died fairly often. It's so frustrating when I realize I have to go back and do all that shit again even after taking care of +30 evil dudes in the room. The most glaring issue was visible at the Lazarus Lab elevator level. Metal riff stopped playing so I was convinced that the struggle is over but I was dead wrong. Seeing two bulky red dudes ripping me apart and starting all over again was the most damning experience I ever had playing this game so far.

      +chanhyun park (Inomooski) You know, you can lower the difficulty if nightmare is too much for you... There's no shame in that. I play the original Doom in ultra-violence as I like my games to be fun and not a chore.

      +Psalm696969 You're right, the game is there for you enjoy, not to suffer. But I wanted some challenges in this game and Ultra-Violence wasn't for me to say the least. I'm fairly certain I'm familiar with the franchise and my reflex is still good enough to take care of those fast moving/bullet sponge creatures. I don't look down others who play on other difficulty nor praise higher ups. That's their decision and I do respect that, because that's on their end anyway. But personally I thought checkpoint system could use some work especially in Lazarus Lab.

    On the more serious note - GGG I am honestly glad that the game is good because I know how much you love DOOM. And even if I am a guy who preferred Doom 3 because of it's more engaging story I will give this one a wild go - because only good daemon is dead daemon.

      That sentence proved that he was an idiot and shortsighted.
      Story is also important part of the game - right there with mechanics and graphics. It is the story that gives us characters and story that drives the game onward.
      I only play video games for story, to me it's like I am reading a book but have direct control over main character in it. Multiplayer is also fun but it get's old and boring really quickly - DOOM 2016 proved that.

      I play a game for, well, the game. I've known from personal experience, years before I've first read this quote, that a game can be equally compelling with or without a story.
      You might want to refrain from calling idiot and short-sighted a man who just happened to create the most famous FPS of all time that is still played 20+ years on (all without a story) while you restrict yourself from playing a whole side of gaming under the fallacious pretense that it "haz no story" - if one of the two should be an idiot, my gut says the latter.
      Oh, and a GOOD multiplayer never gets old - Team Fortress proved that. xD

    I think a lot of people fail to appreciate how cool the lore of the new Doom is. The game doesn't overwhelm you with story and confines its narrative to data logs and environmental clues. It's all very well written and very interesting, especially the lore surrounding the origins of this Doomguy.

    Agreed with the part about the online updates. I found another way to get DOOM for PC is to get a mate to download and back it up to an external file within Steam. You can then restore from backup on your end after purchasing the game online.

    wait, a disc install and a 40gb update? How big is the whole thing? I miss the days when pc games were a tenth of that size. I really don't care about graphics or hi-res textures or any of that. I'm on a shared data cap, with download speeds of about 200-500kbs at best. I don't download full games much bigger than 10gb, let alone updates.

      How is that worse than having to restart the entire mission in the original? Not only that, but you lose everything except for a pistol with 50 rounds.

    • @Johnnybomb1
      @Johnnybomb1 4 роки тому +2

      @@hydroshock1853 For starters. The original 1993 retail version of Doom on DOS, allowed you to save anywhere (even on Nightmare difficulty). Moreover. It was obvious that Nightmare was meant to be cheap/unfair and over the top. And UltraViolence was the "true" hard mode. Now compare that to Doom 2016 UltraViolence mode, and it's laughably easy. Mainly because the game was developed more for gamepad controls, rather than mouse aim+ keyboard. So you bump the difficulty to Nighmare for more of a challenge, and becomes an absolute shitshow with stupid checkpoints, replaying the same demon room/spawns over and over and over again.

    Personally I thought the RPG elements kind of gimped the game and it would have been way more fun without them. I mean weapons should have had just one alt fire mode you get from the start, your suit should have gotten the extra speed perks right off the bat (not to mention double jump) and really you start off with such a pathetically low ammo capacity it feels like a joke (20 shotgun shells? That's not even half of how you started off in the original).
    But still, it's pretty fun game, and the most fun I've had with a triple A FPS game in years.

    • @simovihinen875

      +darktitan3025 That's the kinda feeling I got from what I saw in the review - upgrades are so often shoehorned in for no reason like they're scared it's too straightforward otherwise.

    • @darktitan3025
      @darktitan3025 8 років тому

      +Simo Vihinen I really doubt anyone is ever going to make a 100% oldschool shooter but with better graphics. They just HAVE to shoehorn in some unnecessary modern elements like RPG upgrades, scripted events or canned animations. Feels like we're going backwards in some cases.

    • @jazzmaster909
      @jazzmaster909 8 років тому +5

      +Simo Vihinen I felt, in this case, the upgrade system actually enhanced the gameplay. it gave the game variety without bogging you down with a clusterfuck of 30+ weapons.

      I'll take your word for it, but there's no question they COULD have done just fine without it too.
      Still, zero menus gives you a lot of cool points... :P And if any game, I'd expect Doom 4 to offer the most braindead, simple fun out of all of them. So I can't shake the feeling it's kinda pointless, or if it really required upgrades, they just weren't focused enough on the crux.

    • @jazzmaster909
