    I'm fortunate enough to have a 68 reissue as well (VOS, not Murphy Lab) and I agree with you about the pickups. The lower output (6.8 oddly enough) really crank up beautifully.

      @brendenrodgers7821 Рік тому +1

      As a lover of les Paul’s and metal, lower output is the way to go. Even guys like mark Holcomb of periphery use lower output pickups. You just get way more clarity

      It’s a weird thing. I always thought : the higher out a pickup the better. Then one day I tried a Custom Shop Les Paul that had lower output pickups and it was the best guitar I ever played. It just has more dynamics.

      With the caveat that the unpotted ones sound best but also squeal under very high gain if you are in same room as amp.

    • @kennethcbailey27
      @kennethcbailey27 Рік тому +1

      I'm a rhythm player and love lower output pickups, even microphonic ones. You can get a more crunchy and boxy sound with a lot of articulation and dynamics. One of the keys to a solid rhythm chug sound is being careful not to overload your amp's input. If you run out of headroom at the input, your low end and string to string definition in chords squishes out more and more the harder you dig in.

    I just landed into the Gibson camp this week with a 2016 LP standard T in Honeyburst, and I really do love it. The previous owner pulled out all the electronics and wired it up with 50's style wiring and put in some Seymour Duncan Antiquity hummies. They're really sweet sounding, but very vintage indeed. These 68 pickups seem to have that little bit more chunk that I'm edging for. My standard is in good, but played condition, and it really takes the 'oh shit'-ness out of being scared of that first ding.

It has the light aging and 68 pickups that come on the Murphy lab, but it not considered a reissue. It’s just a regular custom with the Murphy aging and the pickups….but I hated pickups. Lower output pickups work best with high gain metal. They hold shape and don’t become muddy. Took me some time to realize this. But PAF’s sound brutal with heaps of gain. And the clarity and dynamics are eye opening. I still run a few guitars with black winters and other high gain pups. But 7-8k passives are freaking amazing. Fishman’s and EMG’s are good too. But old school low output humbuckers are amazing.

    I used to own a Natural-colored 1970 LPC. It had a 3-piece mahogany neck and a slim 70s neck profile, along with a pancake body. It was one of the lightest and most resonant LPC guitars I've ever owned. In fact, I've owned over 30+ LPC and this one stood out. I bought it for $1,500 in 2018. I also had a deluxe version from the same year with the same features, which was also great. I believe that Norly-Gibson was using old mahogany stock during that transition period, as I found some nice axes from 72 to 80. However, some were not as good as the 70-71 LPs. I also tried a couple of 68s, light LPCs, which looked cool but had almost worn-out frets. I tried many pre-CS, CS, Historics, and Murphy guitars as well, but they looked cool and didn't necessarily reflect the price. You can get an excellent LP like Traditional Series from the 2010s for $1,500 - $1,800. Also, LPC Edwards with the ebony board is crazy good, I had one pre serial and it was way better than my former R7BB.

    On the subject of needing hot pickups, I have to defer to an expert. I saw an interview with Great White's Mark Kendall talking about the ES-335 he used on "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." He also talked about how everyone in the 1980s trying to get hotter pickups for playing metal, but someone in the studio suggested he try the 335 for the part. He became a convert to vintage hotness, and summed up his thoughts (paraphrased): "If you need more power out of your pickups, turn up your amp."

    Hi Hunter, good honest review of this guitar.
    I am old enough to remember the 1970s. Those original reissued LP Customs were used quite a lot. It was an era of searing, sustained ladened lead breaks.
    A lot of players took the idea of Mick Ronson & Marc Bolan, who probably got the idea from John Lennon (!), and sanded off the finish off the top. So if you find an original LP Custom from 68-72 and it still has it's finish on the top, double check it's not a refinish.
    So pleased for you that you got this guitar up and running. I remember seeing the vids of the unboxing and the return saga.

    Congratz - looks and sounds terrific. I still have my original 1968 Custom (bought it in 1974 from a friend for NZD 800 / USD 550ish) and play it a lot - it has become the definition of a 'fretless wonder' but I'm fine with that, very comfortable. Fun demo - I've seen a handful of 68 Reissue vids, always keen to see reactions. The trick for me is how it works clean - esp in the middle position for arpeggiated chord work (thru a Leslie a nice option). Cheers 😀

    The LP Custom didn’t get a maple neck right away,somewhere in the mid to late 70s before it was common.
    But they did go to three piece mahogany necks sooner

    Your riffs, man 💯🔥. I hope you continue to pummel all the vintage reissue guitars you come across with the same level of brutality.

    I have two Murphy Labs - best Gibsons I have ever owned (and I have owned a bunch since the '80s). You can't obsess over the price as long as you can afford it and you enjoy playing the guitar - (and these are made to be played, not treated like works of art). They are just tools - expensive ones, but still tools.

    Nice coverage on the Murphy Labs products. The tops don't look like they are carved the same as 50's and early 60's with the 'big belly'. Is that the case or is it just not showing. No volute is better IMO.

    Hearing that they went back putting more angle on the neck makes me sad, we will never get a truly modern Les Paul as the "de facto" specs instead of traditional ones because that would be acknowledging they've been ripping people's money with "less than ideal" guitars for 40 years lol.
    For all the shit Norlin Era gets with the pancake bodies (deservedly so), it was the last time Gibson really went with innovation: less angle on the neck, maple necks and fingerboards, volutes, thinner necks...
    It's hard being a fan of these guitars.

    Hi,
    Thank you for review!
    Question - did you replace strings on it for this review video?

    Nice guitar. You can go the used/vintage route and get something with real deal play wear for a lot less money as another option.

    1968 is definitely my favourite year of Custom. Just that combination of black and gold, maple cap so it doesn't weigh 15 tons and shallower break angle does it for me. I never really liked the 1957 outside of the colour combo. My second favourite would be the 1954 however because it's just so interesting, but man that weight

    I actually played a real 68 that a former family member had, and he stil might have it! anyway that looks like the same guitar i remember the neck being kinda chunky but it was beautiful ,nice playing man.😊

    Man I absolutely love your playing groove has always been the thing I feel like is the most important thing and boy do you have groove.
    I also love Sweetwater so damn much man. Like I remember I found them because I Googled the digidesign eleven rack and that was 2009 that it launched and I loved that you could see so many specs and they had demo videos right there with the gear. Also they do so much for the music community they have always ran giveaways since I can remember which means millions but they cover everything musically like when I started learning and seeing more about atmos they are one of the first to have a dedicated studio for it and had info about it. Forever my favorite retailer and not just because I also have a sweet tooth 😂.

    what's more worth it is one of their higher end custom models WITHOUT the someone dinging and scratching them up for me... for example the latest Les Paul Custom with 5A 1piece maple top?? $10K and in cherry mint condition!

    I just bought LP modern. Being a mere mortal, that pretty much my financial limitations. Although it's not a Murphy lab. There was some finished checking around the toggle switch that got me a $600 discount. You might say it's a reverse Murphy lab. They screw it up and have to pay me..
