In this episode of the Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Artist Series, world-renown guitarist and guitar collector Joe Bonamassa talks about why he likes vintage guitars, plays several of the new Murphy Lab-aged Gibson Custom Shop guitars, and offers viewers his first impressions - while absolutely blowing us away with some facts about how nitrocellulose lacquer on vintage guitars check, and how to spot a played-in guitar.
Joe tells viewers about the first time he ever handled a 1959 Les Paul, which was in 1993. He also talks about vintage Les Pauls that he has seen that have been converted and heavily modified in various ways, mainly because the owners never thought they would become so valuable.
As he plays the guitars from the Gibson Custom Shop’s Murphy Lab including a Les paul, SG, Firebird and ES-335, Joe gives us a demo and review of each model. He emphasizes the “played-in” feel of the Murphy Lab instruments. “The binding makes all the difference. It doesn’t feel new.” He adds, “The fact that you’ve been able to capture the played-in feel on a new guitar is something that, in the history of aging, hasn’t been done.” He also comments about the checking on the body on a Murphy Lab-aged ES-335 and how they got that right, too.
Joe also recalls his first guitar and what it was like to crack open the case. “It represents a dream - that anybody can pick one of these things up and go, you know, if I just believe in myself, I can do this.” And he leaves us with this statement about the Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab guitars: “What’s not to like? It’s that attention to detail … the hard work pays off, and this really shows.”

I can listen to Joe talk about Gibson guitars all night!
Joe Bonamassa knows Great Guitars when he picks them up, plays them acoustically and plugs them in and ROARS. A totally fitting marriage of Superstar Artist and Superstar Guitars. Congrats! :)
He's a niche artist at best, hardly a superstar.
@@HashiAkitaPuppy 😎 Joe B is a Superstar in my "opinion" ☺
@@HashiAkitaPuppy The guy is a self-made musician with three houses and a serious vintage guitar collection. Hardly niche. Ask someone in his business.
@@HashiAkitaPuppy check his bank account....I'm sure IT would disagree.
@@GeoffSweet ask 100% walking down the street if they know who Joe Bonamassa is and unless you are standing outside of guitar center, you won't find more than 3 people who know him.
6:05 The most inspiring piece of wisdom I’ve ever heard. Thank you sir Joe.
.....and be a "Jukebox hero"🎶
Joe is probably the best person to do a review of these guitars because he he knows his stuff and can do things musically that more players cannot!!
But this is not a review! It is an advertisement by Gibson. He might be convinced by these guitars, maybe? But he is not gonna criticize them in any way
Joe makes me want to buy a Murphy Lab 59 every time I see him on UA-cam
D T everytime I see him I wanna buy his Fender custom shop Telecaster
If you think that this is a review and not an advertisement, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona that I'd like to sell you.
They have him playing through a boogie, lol.
Joe is such an incredibly humble and likeable guy. Love his insight into these Murphy Labs..
lol, very humble man.
I had the opportunity to play several at Sweetwater. Honestly? I loved every single one of them.
I bet you played them all like a nerd!
@@RobertBakerGuitar Think I didn't!!?
‘Closest I’ve seen’… for now Joe, for now.
Lol, until next year’s come out.
Saw Joe in concert last week in Vegas, still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.
Joe is great. Always interesting, humble and a hard working individual. The guy deserves everything he has and that he bought his parents a beautiful home and one of his Dad's favourite mid 60's muscle car, demonstrates just what a loving family can achieve. All the best JB, his family and those fine folk who build these guitars. Fan from Sydney, Australia.
I can sit and watch Joe talk and play guitars for hours on end. Always a Joy to see such a great player
Ughhh GIBSON. You are the reason I can’t retire! I want everyone of these!
I sense an “ICON” 5 - 10 part series with Joe in the near Future. It just can’t be one!
I’m not into the aged or relics but I appreciate what Gibson is doing they’ve never let me down with any of my purchases all my Les Pauls play like a dream and still smell damn good!!
I love my les paul smell
VOS R8
If anybody knows what a vintage Gibson should like it's Joe. He takes stuff on the road most would be scared to take out of a safe! Keep playing the blues Joe we're listening. 👂👂
Joe Bonamassa is amazing live!!!
I'm sold. Once I pay off my Sweetwater card balance. I'm buying one of these.
Thank you Joe!
Joe now also plays SGs on stage. If anyone exemplifies the great Gibson heritage this man does, what a rich tapestry of instruments we have to play.
I'm just waiting for them to offer relic'd Boogies.
Murpha Boogie
@@SteveDunnBand Ha! If relicing guitars is partly to give them some mythical backstory, then if you got a new relic'd Boogie that didn't work, I expect they'd just tell you it fell down an imaginery set of stairs.
@@hotblackdesiato3451 But after picking it up at the bottom of those stairs, a Boogie would still work 💪
Why so we can pay 10x the price?
More Bonamassa content please!
Joe is carrying the blues torch, I freaking love him finally getting the recognition. I know he’s been getting a while now but I’ve been watching him for years.
"blues"...lol, blues based pop-rock is more like it.
When people like Gary Moore passed away, Joe for me took over and some others that followed. Joe stays with the classic greats and it shows.
My first Gibson guitar was a1965 Gibson SG Standard..It was hanging on the wall in the used guitar section of the store (before there was Vintage). I paid $360.00 dollars for it. It was well loved, worn, aged and the nickel PAFs were tarnished, the binding was smooth as ivory and the inlays were a bit yellowed with age. I remember strumming it and how resonant it was. I've seen a few of these Murphy Lab SG's and it brings back a lot memories of my 1st Gibson...only thing missing is that old guitar aroma. Gibson Por Vida!
Very lucky man, don't sell it. I wish I can go back in time and take a whole rack of 59's in Les Pauls, SG's and Telecasters lol. I am very happy with my two Jimmy Page signature Telecasters though. Who knows if they are the exact spec, but they play, feel and sound very good. I also Have an Epiphone 59' Les Paul that I paid $799 for. That to me was a
steal and that guitar is still available. THe Murphy Labs will take a little time saving up for but I will have one in the future.
Joe kicks ass, love his passion and enthusiasm for the guitar!
Impeccable taste in guitars,Joe always plays the coolest guitars on the planet!
I need to try me one of these Murphy Labs!
Yeah, my g
Yes, you do you, big NERD!!!
Do a give a way, you wont 🤑
I recommend you do Rob 😉
Just make sure it’s not one which has had the flaking finish problems
My Gibson Skinnerburst has that "ping" acoustically and roars. It is not a Murphy Lab though. It was built in 2014.
Always good to her you play Jo 👍
I love you JOE!!!!
Such an excellent collection of historic guitars. Love your style, both Joe B, and Gibson. Thank you for a great interview. 😍👍
Needs to be 2 hrs longer, or more ! Heck I could listen to him ALL day long.
⚓️ Thanks Joe, Mark 😎
Even tho out of my budget, they are bringing a real excitement to Gibson
Beautiful guitars 💕
that firebird is wow
Ya got the 👍 from Joe. Means yur doin somethin right 😁🎸🤘
So awesome!
That cherry sunburst les paul though😍
joe is a professional guitar nerd.
As always it´s really interesting to listen to Joe talking about guitars, because he is one of those peolpe who really has the experience with these amazing old instruments.
Just read a comment here that he is "the most boring man alive" - ok he is making no saltos or handstands, you only have to listen to what he´s saying and if it´s not interesting for you:
Watch another video! Just last week I had the chance to test the Murphy Lab Les Pauls in each "aging version" - expensive but amazing. I would chose the very light aged Model!
Keep the Blues alive!
Chris, they're nothing more than arm chair blowhards who call Joe boring. I don't find him boring at all. He still sounds like a kid in a candy store and a damn fine guitarist. Us guitarist are looking for the Holy Grail at a fraction of the cost, that sound. If we find it, we try to pay for it lol. With 15 guitars I own, I'm not done.
@@michaelheller8841 Michael - yes you hit the point. I‘m always impressed of his enthusiasm talking about guitars. They are like people to him and its a real conversation between him and the guitars. Maybe I like this, because I often feel the same way. Anyway - for me its fun to watch and listen to Joe.
Greetings from Germany 😎🎸
Have met him twice, very humble and down to earth. Just your average Joe! (Except he's a phenomenal guitarist)
gibson just tugs at my heart strings
Joe is the best.
I love JB got to see him in Vegas.
What an awesome guy , !!!!
Sweet, my trusty Gibson SG Standard now resembles a top shelf Murphy Lab guitar & all I had to do was gig it for a year. Awesome
collector's dream
Gimmie a Murphy Labs RD Standard. One with the original full 25.5" scale plz.
Fluff.... You're a big UA-cam channel, who loves Gibson! I guarantee if you said pretty please, you could get a good "artist discount" or something!!!! Love your work bro!!!! I'd love for you to do another "favorite artist signature guitar" video!!! Mine is still the Wes Borland Yamaha CV820WB!
THIS
Ask and ye shall receive 🙌
Absofrkn right
I’d love to see a heavily checked/aged Flying F-Hole headstock inlay.
That was so awesome!! I have two Gibson Standards but my Bonamassa Epi 58’ “Amos” Flying V is right up there.. and talk about a guitars value skyrocketing wow!! Thanks Joe!!
I imagine heavens gate opening and that white sg meeting me. Drool.
I have an OLD ES125T hanging in my NERDSVILLE Just like Joe...but only 1. I should bring it up to you guys so we can put a date on it. I like what Epiphone is doing. I have several, including the Epiphone '59 Les Paul I bought on Les Paul's last birthday, a Gold Glory, an SG Muse, an SG Jr. (I put a P-90 in) and a couple of the Les Paul Specials with P-90's ALL GREAT GUITARS
I never judge people by their looks, but you'd never suspect Joe of being the absolute guitar legend that he is, just by looking at him.
Can't afford it, but it sounds and looks great.
Great video - great guitars!
I've been playing for 37 years and that Firebird is still my white whale. ;-)
Aw man I was hoping for a Steve Winwood reference on the firebird! Badass nonetheless
That frost blue Firebird is the coolest guitar I've ever seen
I love this man and his sense of humour ❤️❗️
WOW!! Ok I'm get at least one!! They all sound GREAT! That white SG has a nice warm rumble which I love on a nice low watt amp!!PEACE
Funny he mentions the Heel Crack on Sg's. A bandmate loaned me his 62 or 61 sg, and it had the heel crack, and when they reglued it together they did not use clamping properly, so the action was higher than normal. The crack was at such an odd angle too.
Ageing is just another word for living
I noticed the Boogie product placement. I remember when Gibson use to embrace the Gibson/Marshall combo.
Those days are gone. Now we are supposed to believe that is was an LP/Boogie combination on our favorite records, not an LP/Marshall. Don't trust your lying ears.
Nice mesa boogie !
Hello Mark Agnesi I know you are out there! HELLO MARK!
Never understood the desire to take something new, wreck it cosmetically, and sell it as new. Then again, I've never understood the desire to buy something like that. There's no magic in these guitars - Joe is just an exceptional player. By the way, he sounds just as good on every other guitar he plays. 🤘Joe!
Did you actually listen to the numerous benefits mentioned that an aged guitar provides?
******* I'm waiting for a Kirk Hammett/Gary Moore, Murphy Lab, 59 Greeny. 👌. I miss the old days when the Gibson showcase, was in the Opry Mills Mall (pre flood) seeing the Zakk Wylde Custom Shop bullseye on the wall was 🤘!!!!
Good enough for Joe.. good enough for anyone. That white SG sounded amazing.
My fav
I’m not a Gibson guy but that Polaris white sggggg 🤤
If anyones knows , it’s definitely J.B , J.C And Tom Murphy
I don't like Pauls but damn those SGs are gorgeous. Love the Pelham blue.
Joe seems like a good dude.
Esse é lenda !!!
abraços e bends
A voice like Kermit the Frog 🐸😂. Joe, you are a legend 🙌🏻🖖✌️
i have the Elliot Easton reissue Les Paul SG custom ,, amazing these guitars are under $3500 looks just like this 61 for $7K
I bet Joes Murphy lab finish doesnt crack and fall off in lil chunks lol.
Джо просто красавчик, так держать!!!
His phrasing is so fresh. Always hear new sounds from him. How does he do that? There are only 12 notes!!!!
Not trying to be cynical, because I'm sure they are mostly great guitars...but Gibson brings JB in to review Murphy Lab offerings...what was he supposed to say?
They suck, and the finish chips off....
I love Joe, but the dude is wearing a freaking Gibson cap...
@@AnonymousSam Of course,Joe's a Gibson player,what did you expect?
Wont be long before the 2016 and 17 Henry J models are worth a fortune the JC era is just a name on a headstock.
Didnt think Bonamassa would sell out
I believe in Bonamassa + Gibson into a Boogie
🤘
Cheers Gibson. All of those sounded awesome. Joe was alright . . . Lol
"Cool, now can I go plug them into a Tweed?" -- Joe, right after filming this, probably.
Like a kid in the candy store :)
I want to call Joe up and pick up my next 59' for real. Who would know better than him?
What if you install new pickups on vintage 59 les paul and vice versa vintage 59 pickups on new murphy lab body .. would be interesting..
Check out the boogie amp
I really wish I could afford one lol maybe one day when I don’t have so many bills I might pick one up lol
My favorite type of relic is If the guitar looks used but was really well taken care of, give me an SG and I will run out with it in my hand
If you ever do a Guitar Shop, it will be the best on World... you know.
Joe knows his vintage guitars. He owns many lol. If he says the Murphy Labs are as close to the date, I'd take his word over an average Joe who never even was close to a guitar worth a half-million dollars here or there. The real question is, is it for you? you still have to pick it up and play it. That will tell how to invest in it. There are many factors. If it's set up right, rings and sings?
buy it. I own an Epiphone Joe Bonamassa Black Beauty 3 pickup Custom Les Paul. To me, it's worth way more than what I paid $650 for I got very lucky. Is it a Gibson Murphy Lab? no. If I play one it will have to do the same thing. Play well, ring and sing. I will just have to save up and eat more Mac N Cheese than I would like lol.
Fair point but hes not doing the video for free so there is a conflict of interest there.
Michael, I was lucky to grab one of these JB Black Beauty 3PU Epiphone‘s and I totally agree: Its a very good guitar. Last week here in Germany one was sold private on ebay for 1400 € (!). Great neck profile if you like the 50‘s neck like I do. I grab the guitar and from the first moment I felt comfortable!
And the Probucker PU‘s sounds great. I can compare it with my 2010 Custom Shop Gibson 58 Reissue Les Paul which costs four times more - and I must say: well done Epiphone and Joe!
@@chrisforever1255 it is a fantastic guitar for the value, no doubt. Sometimes with signature guitars there is a lot of hype. Joe’s signature is not, it’s that good. I’ve been pretty lucky with signature guitars, I have two of Jimmy Page Telecasters and they are worth every penny too. I’m sure nothing is 100% spec but if it feels good that’s all that counts. I love bigger necks because you can bend strings better. I can play slim necks as well just different hand action.
This is a paid advertisement. Does he even mean what he says?
@@perudolux Don´t know if Gibson really have to give him money for his appearance in this spot. And YES - I belive that he means what he says. And if you ask me now if I am a "Bonamassa-Fan-Boy" - YES, I am!
Have a nice day!
Robert Degraff owner of Sound Vibrations Music Store Corpus Christi Texas passed away 8-9-2021 from COVID he was a Gibson dealer and a friend he will be missed
Hey Joe, how do you like the finish flaking of Murphy's lab guitars? ...
Wow
How about a GA79RVT amp to go with that fine guitar ?
Those are some great-looking guitars. Nice that these Gibson demos can now be played through amps that the company actually sells.
Interesting to see Joe give an almost instant analysis of the instruments, including little details like this one having a nice “bloom” or that one with the sweet “ping.” He’s seen so many it’s like he has a supernatural ability to access the guitars’ overall quality and feel within a minute or two. Very impressive.
I did find it funny to hear him mention the current high prices of vintage guitars. Aren’t they expensive because of the market created by collectors like Joe and well-heeled pros? That’s not a criticism - just the way it is. Good old guitars eventually end up in the hands of the people with the bucks.
5:42 Son, you probably bought that one cause you thought it looked beat up !
(Name that movie)
I think with Cesar and Mark being pro instrument is putting Gibson in a place where the original factory is making instruments that they should have been for decades. Joe is right, most vintage Les Paul’s sound like they need a fret job but they don’t. It’s the Mojo!!!
With the prices on these I'd rather buy a vintage guitar of some sort. I'm sure the the doctors and lawyers will love these though. They can buy the whole collection. Of course I'm jealous. They are on the front lines dealing with covid so its nice of Gibson to cater to them. Lawyers also since they are helping them sue everyone.
cool
"The Ping" is the thing...
Just a shame that it is so expensive......would never be able to afford such a guitar.
