Please stop peddling that the ECU does a "Passive Regen", there is nothing Passive about it and it's a lie that Subaru continue to insist on telling. I have one of these cars and have spent considerable time reverse-engineering the ECU ROM to discover (and succeeded) how to perform forced regenerations. As part of this, I built a data logger that monitors the vehicle's details including the regeneration state of the car. This "Passive Regeneration" is not passive, it's active, the engine ramps up the DPF temperature by injecting fuel during the exhaust stroke to burn in the DPF.
Normal operating temperatures the CAT and DPF temperatures never exceed 250-350C, when the car decides to do a regen it (tries to) ramp up the temperature to 650C. It doesn't care about the average engine load when it does this and will do a "Passive Renegeration" when coasting down hills, such as when I travel from the Blue Mountains to Penrith further clogging the DPF as it never hits the 600C+ required to burn off the soot.
The trigger for a "Passive Renegeration" is soot at 65% as measured by the differential pressure sensor, after 12.5 minutes the regeneration will stop even if incomplete. After two such failed cycles, the ECU goes into fault and needs a forced regen. These cars are Lemons and Subaru are doing nothing to resolve these issues, blaming the driver for them and insisting on DPF replacements costing thousands. A simple software update to take into account the average engine load before starting a DPF regeneration would solve 90% of DPF failures in these cars. Or even better yet, a button to press when it's ideal to perform a "Passive Regeneration" such as when you are on a highway under continual load.

@@lukegenesis Sorry, but of what? Can't really make much of a video of 100+ hours of reverse engineering a ROM.

@@gnif is love to see your Data logging findings, 100+ hours of research, software, etc. surely you would be able to summarise your conclusions in a 0-30 min consumable for the general public kind of video.

@@lukegenesis perhaps however this was done over 5 years ago on a 2010 model, much of the details are lost to time. The end result was that the SSM3 Mode 2 authentication was cracked, which I posted all the details for on Rom Raider (romraider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=121958#p121958 ). Unfortunately, though it seems Subaru has changed the ECU around and locked us out again, as I have a mate with a 2019 model who is having DPF issues (yeah, 9 years newer and still has the same fault) which this auth no longer works on. Avoid Subaru Diesels at all costs!

I’ve got a ee20Z Impreza in the uk it’s about 180bhp but dpf has been removed but has not been mapped out. Egr is still working too what should I look out for as the dpf light is flashing but I think it is just because the ecu thinks the dpf is not working ?

I wish this video was around a couple years ago. We had the post-intercooler pipe split while on an interstate trip (2010 Foz). DPF not happy. Much pain and suffering ensued......

Hello. Thank you so much for this very useful information. I'm curious of what your opinion on DPF cleaning products (fluids you mix with fuel). I've heard mixed things about them. Some say they work and some say stay away, or at least that your engine is better off in the long run not using these products.

I own Subaru diesel since 2013.dec. Very good choice for daily driver, however need to get out of city, to avoid mentined problems. Especially important in low temperature enviroment, like northerm Europe.

I have been trying to catch up on your videos. I wish I watched this one last week. DPF failure in MQ Triton after a couple of big drives surprisingly. I told Dealer service staff over the phone at the time that I was in limp mode after a big drive. They told me to keep driving it to burn the soot off, but I knew something else was up and I couldn’t get it up to 40 km / hr. Took to closest diesel specialist as dealer service dept also asked me if Petrol or Diesel! Anyway - cause was split intercooler hose at 38,000 km. Didn’t notice power drop or noise until it started limping. Dealer service Manager and GM still do not understand DPF failure causes. If I took their advice my DPF would be dead.

Hi Brett i have some interesting thoughts form other Subaru diesel owners the intercooler hoses should be replaced at around 100.000 klms if you do you would be having much more life from the DPF they say there not reliable past past 100.000

Ive had a dlf alarm on car which I took to dealer to regen the car, this was done but since getting it back Ive noticed a air rushing noise around 2500 room upwards and wondered if the heat of the regen has possibly caused my air intake hose to split, am I being stupid?

There's nothing inherently wrong with them. They just don't like sitting in traffic their entire life. As long as they get a good freeway run every once in a while they're just as reliable as a petrol Suby.

@@MRTPerformanceAustralia Mine is driven daily on a highway and sufferers DPF issues due to the poorly written software in the ECU. This car is a Lemon and Subaru blame the driver's habits for DPF failures in all instances. See my detailed post about this and how I proved it. I love to drive this car, it is excellent mechanically and has a ton of torque, but the extremely poor design of the DPF management software makes this car a nightmare to own, even if you are able to service it yourself.
